Brazil's controversial ex-president Jair Bolsonaro on Thursday (March 30) returned to the country after his self imposed exile in US. This is the first time Bolsonaro is returning to Brazil after his exit following a defeat in the presidential election against his rival, the current President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. Bolsonaro was in Florida for three months and returned to Brazil's capital Brasilia on a commercial flight.

Bolsonaro, a far-right leader, left Brazil just two days before Lula's inauguartion on January 1.

Now that he has returned to Brazil, Bolsonaro is likely to face legal troubles on many fronts. Among the main ones is for his alleged role in inciting supporters who rioted in the capital om January 8 in a failed bid to oust Lula.

It threatens to be a tense day in Brasilia, where authorities vowed to block supporters from holding a huge welcome rally at the airport.

Bolsonaro, 68, is set to start a new job next week as honorary president of his Liberal Party (PL), earning 41,600 reais (around $8,000) a month.

Bolsonaro recently rented a house in a gated community in Brasilia. He has said that he plans to criss-cross Brazil "doing politics" and "upholding the banner of conservatism."

But "I'm not going to lead any opposition," Bolsonaro told CNN Brasil as he prepared to board his flight.

"I'm going to participate with my party as someone with experience."

Before his return, authorities in Brasilia urged his supporters not to rally at the airport. They said that the police would be out in force to ensure that traffic runs smoothly.

Former Brazil president Bolsonaro returns to the country after self-imposed exile

Brazil's former president Jair Bolsonaro has reportedly handed over to the Brazilian authorities some expensive jewellery he had received from the Saudi Arabia government during his tenure. AFP reports that the 68-year-old far-right leader has been embroiled in a scandal over allegations that he brought these jewels into Brazil illegally. As per a Reuters report, the politician on Wednesday was ordered by Brazil's federal audit court (TCU) to deliver within five days a second set of jewellery he received from the Saudi government, the first one first set of jewellery had been seized by customs officials in 2021.

However, in October 2021, it was revealed by the newspaper Estado de Sao Paulo that Bolsonaro's then-mines and energy minister's assistant attempted to enter Brazil with a backpack containing diamond jewellery from Swiss luxury brand Chopard following a business trip to Saudi Arabia. The assistant was stopped by customs officials.

Later, it was discovered that Bolsonaro had actually retained an additional set of Chopard jewels that, after the same trip, had entered Brazil undetected.

According to media accounts, the first set of jewels is valued at $3.2 million and the second set is worth at least $75,000. Some of these were reportedly given to the former president's wife as a gift. However, Bolsonaro claims "She has nothing to do with this, the box that was for her is with customs." Talking to the TV, he said that "I found out about this story a year later and my wife found out about it through the press."

Bolsonaro who, after losing to successor Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, left the nation just two days before the end of his term, is likely to return to Brazil on March 30 as per his party.

'Zombies' may still be a thing of fiction. Yet certain pathogens essentially convert their victims into walking dead. Scientists believe they have discovered a new parasitic fungus. They prey on trapdoor spiders in Brazil’s Atlantic Rainforest.

Parasitic fungus that infects and kills spiders like ZOMBIE discovered in Brazil

Scientists have recently claimed to have discovered a new parasitic fungus which infects and kills trapdoor spiders in the Atlantic rainforest in Brazil.

The rare fungus is purple and is part of the group that infects invertebrates and then takes over the host. In a close-up image, the fungus is seen wrapped around a trapdoor spider's body, poking out of the burrow from which the insects are grabbed by the arachnid.

The researchers said that no evidence has surfaced till now which proves that the behaviour of trapdoor spiders is controlled by the newly-discovered parasitic fungus before the former is killed, like their zombie-ant fungi relatives, which tricks the insects into leaving their nests to reach places where they are free to spread their spores.

The scientists discovered the fungus during their field trip to forests north of Rio de Janeiro in November. They were visiting the forests to document the biodiversity of the area and find new species.

“It’s a really beautiful thing,” stated Dr Joao Araujo, a Brazilian mycologist with the New York Botanical Garden who found the parasitic fungus.

“They infect trapdoor spiders, and it’s one of the very few cordyceps that are purple, which is a cool feature. We don’t know much about this fungal group because it’s very understudied. This kind of fungus has been collected very few times in the world, mostly in Thailand. This will likely be the first time we sequence a species like this from Brazil,” he added.

The expedition, which was held in collaboration between the New York Botanical Garden, Kew, Royal Botanic Gardens, Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden and other organisations, included experts on fungi, birds, snakes, frogs and plants.

“The new species that attacks trapdoor spiders belongs to a mega-diverse group of fungi. We know about 1% of its diversity, so we know very little. Foundational scientific work is needed so we can, perhaps, investigate new medical compounds or use them to protect against pests in crops,” Araujo said.

Lead researchers Dr Natalia Przelomska and Dr Oscar Alejandro Pérez Escobar, who carried out in-the-field sequencing, said that the new species hypothesis will be backed by their work and can be used for speeding up the identification of other species in ecosystems.

“Here at Kew, we have access to big DNA sequencing machines and all sorts of ways to produce data. That is often so much harder in biodiverse countries. So what was really special about the field trip was that we could go and use some of the newest DNA sequencing technologies with the people working there. It’s one small step in this really big problem of unequal access,” Przelomska said.

Scientists discover parasitic fungus which preys on spiders in Brazil

Attacks by marauding gang members continued for third night in northeast Brazil in spite of security having been strengthened, authorities said on Thursday (March 16). Media reports showed images of public buses and building set on fire in nine cities, including in Natal, the state capital of northeastern state of Grande do Norte state. The unrest began late on Monday.

Imprisoned gang leaders have stoked the unrest to protest against jail conditions and new regulations that seek to stop the criminal activity within the state penal system.

In Natal, a garbage collection centre, a supermarket and a gas station were all set ablaze, the G1 news site said.

"Never in my life have I seen something like this going on. We left for work... and we came across this. It is very sad," Reinaldo Silva, a mason in Natal, told AFP.

And additional 220 federal police have been sent to the state. Reinforcement may climb as high as 800 in coming days, said Justice and Security Minister Flavio Dino as he spoke with CNN.

At least 28 urban areas in the state have been hit by the disturbances this week, authorities said.

Local media have carried footage of vehicles in flames, and of police cruisers, businesses and government buildings riddled with bullets.

Leftist President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva hasn't spoken in public about the disorder.

At least two people were killed in clashes with police earlier in the week, and 67 people have been arrested, public security sources in the state told AFP.

Brazil cities face gang violence as imprisoned gangsters stoke arson, unrest

Scientists have long been intrigued by the geology of Brazil's volcanic Trindade Island, but recent discoveries of plastic rocks in this remote turtle habitat have raised concerns.

On the island, situated almost 1,140 kilometres (708 miles) from the state of Espirito Santo in the southeast, melted plastic has interwoven itself with rocks, which geologists say is proof of humans' growing influence over the earth's geological cycles.

“This is new and terrifying at the same time, because pollution has reached geology,” said Fernanda Avelar Santos, a geologist at the Federal University of Parana, who spoke to Reuters.

Santos and her team performed chemical tests to determine the type of plastics found in the "plastiglomerates," which are rocks composed of a mixture of sedimentary granules and other debris held together by plastic.

“We identified [the pollution] mainly comes from fishing nets, which is very common debris on Trinidade Island’s beaches,” Santos said. “The [nets] are dragged by the marine currents and accumulate on the beach. When the temperature rises, this plastic melts and becomes embedded with the beach’s natural material.”

The green turtle, Chelonia mydas, is one of the most endangered species in the world, and every year, thousands of them come to lay their eggs on Trindade Island. The Brazilian navy, which keeps a base on the island and guards the turtle nests, is the only human population on Trindade.

“The place where we found these samples [of plastic] is a permanently preserved area in Brazil, near the place green turtles lay their eggs,” Santos said.

Santos claims that the discovery raises concerns about the impact of humans on the environment.

“We talk so much about the Anthropocene, and this is it,” Santos told Reuters, referring to a proposed geological epoch defined by humans’ impact on the planet’s geology and ecosystems.

“The pollution, the garbage in the sea and the plastic dumped incorrectly in the oceans is becoming geological material ... preserved in the earth’s geological records,” she added.

As per the latest figures released by the Brazilian government on Friday, last month 322 square kilometres (or 124 square miles) of forest cover were destroyed in Brazil's share of the world's biggest rainforest. This is 62 per cent higher that the previous record established in February 2022. The data based on the national space agency's DETER surveillance programme shows the extent of challenges faced by President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in his quest to reverse surging environmental destruction.

In Cerrado, satellite data showed 558 square kilometres of destruction. This is up 99 per cent from February 2022 and nearly double the February 2020 record of 283 square kilometres.

The numbers are no surprise. As per an AFP report, deforestation in the Amazon had already broken the record for February just 17 days into the month. However, these were not the figures President Lula was hoping for after two months in office.

Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) and Brazil star Neymar is out for the season from Ligue 1 as he would be undergoing an ankle surgery and will need three to four months to return to full fitness, announced the club on Monday.

The Brazilian, who suffered the injury on February 19 against Lille in Ligue 1, "has had several episodes of instability in the right ankle in recent years," said the club, adding that its medical staff "recommended a ligament repair operation" be undertaken in Doha.

"Following his last sprain contracted on February 20, the medical staff... recommended a ligament repair operation to avoid a major risk of recurrence. All the experts consulted have confirmed this necessity.

"A delay of three to four months is expected before his return to training," the club added.

PSG, still waiting for a maiden Champions League title, bid to overturn a 1-0 first-leg deficit in the last 16 against Bayern Munich in Germany on Wednesday.

Neymar, who has scored 18 goals in all competitions this season, was in fine form for the French champions before the World Cup break.

But the 31-year-old has netted only twice in eight league appearances since returning from Qatar, where Brazil were dumped out in the quarter-finals by Croatia.

Neymar has previously missed matches in the Champions League knock-out phase due to injuries in 2018, 2019 and 2021.

Meanwhile, PSG's other superstar Kylian Mbappe is determined to take his team past Bayern in much-hyped showdown after creating history for the club as he became PSG's highest goal scorer last week by scoring his 201st goal for them.

PSG face German giant Bayern Munich on Wednesday in the last-16's second-leg in the UEFA Champions League where they currently are behind 1-0.

"My mind is already on Wednesday's match. We are going to Munich with the clear aim of qualifying," Mbappe said on Saturday.

"I don't think this match will have an impact. If I linked my future to the Champions League, without wishing to show a lack of respect to the club, I would have left a long time ago," he added.

Brazil has temporarily halted its beef exports to China following the confirmation of a case of mad cow disease in the northern state of Para. This move will have a massive impact on Brazil's beef exports as China is the main destination for its meat. The Brazilian agriculture and livestock ministry have assured that all necessary measures are being taken to investigate the matter and ensure the quality of Brazilian meat for both domestic and global consumers.

What is Mad Cow disease?

Mad cow disease, also known as bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), is a transmissible, slowly progressive, degenerative, and fatal disease that affects the central nervous system of adult cattle. The infectious agent that causes mad cow disease is an abnormal version of a protein found on cell surfaces, known as a prion. The altered protein destroys the nervous system tissue, including the brain and spinal cord, and the exact reason for this remains unknown.

Brazil sounds warning bells

In response to the suspected case of mad cow disease in Para, Brazil has taken immediate steps to prevent any further spread of the disease. The animal was on a property with 160 head of cattle, and the site has been inspected and preventively interdicted. Samples from the animal have been sent to the World Organization for Animal Health lab in Canada to determine whether it was the classic form of the disease or its "atypical" version.

Can Mad Cow disease disseminate to humans?

The Brazilian government has stated that the symptomatology of the suspected case indicates that it is the atypical form of the disease, which appears spontaneously in nature and does not pose a risk of dissemination to the herd or to humans. Despite this, the temporary suspension of beef exports to China is a necessary precautionary measure to ensure the safety and quality of Brazilian beef.

Carnival cancelled in two Brazilian cities amid heavy rainfall, three dead

Hundreds throng Rio De Janeiro, carnival festivities in Brazil begin

Filled with sequins, samba and glitter, the famous carnival parades will kick off in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday, bringing the first full-on-edition of the festival held since the bitter elections of Brazil and Covid-19, to its climax.

The biggest carnival in the world, which officially started on Friday, will see a peak in its party level during the all-night parade competition to be held on Sunday and Monday, where the top 12 samba schools of the city will compete to become the champions with their display of mesmerizing floats, enthralling music and numerous drummers, dancers and singers wearing feather-covered, skimpy costumes.

The party was declared open by Mayor Eduardo Paes on Friday, as he handed the city's key symbolically to "King Momo" or the jovial "monarch" who will "rule" Rio for the next four days.

"It is with great happiness, celebrating life, celebrating democracy, that I have the honour of handing the keys to the city to King Momo," Paes said, who has been an avid carnival lover.

After two pandemic-hit carnivals and a polarised presidential election that took place in October, Rio is now in full mood to party. In 2021, Rio cancelled the carnival and organised a reduced version of the festival last year, as it placed a ban on the epic street parties, also called "blocos", and the parades were postponed by two months due to the pandemic. However, this year, the full-on festival is back.

A UK couple decided to travel for three months across Europe and South America without boarding aeroplanes because of the notorious aviation chaos in 2022. Rick Turner along with his husband Adam Longbottom, both of whom work remotely, decided to go on a months-long vacation trip around Europe and visit the countries they had never seen before. Hence, the couple set out on their European rail odyssey, crossed the Atlantic on a boat, and finally took a plane in South America.

“Everyone’s luggage was going missing, and we knew that we’d be moving on (from destination to destination) every few days. This was the trip of a lifetime and we didn’t want to lose our luggage for any part of it,” Turner said.

The couple, in total, travelled across 11 countries before boarding a flight. Turner said that when they left the United Kingdom, everything was up for grabs. The only goal of the couple was to reach Italy at some point, however, they wanted to return too.

By the time the couple boarded the Eurostar train, which passed through the Channel Tunnel, they started planning to stop at Lille, which is the first stop of the Eurostar train after Calais.

“We’d been to Paris before loads, so we chose Lille this time, and decided where to go from there. We just knew we wanted to go to places we hadn’t been before. We’d always wanted to do that thing of going to an airport, looking at the flights leaving and getting on one – so without flights, we were looking at our rail app every day, working out where we could get to,” Turner said.

After reaching every destination, the couple would decide where they should head next, which meant that they planned the trip a day before or on the day of travel.

By the time the couple boarded the Eurostar train, which passed through the Channel Tunnel, they started planning to stop at Lille, which is the first stop of the Eurostar train after Calais. WATCH | Airbnb clocks first profitable year on strong travel demand “We’d been to Paris before loads, so we chose Lille this time, and decided where to go from there. Brazil's commitment to protect the environment is in question once again, this time for scuttling a warship in the Atlantic Ocean despite repeated calls by environmental groups to not go ahead with a move. The Brazilian authorities sunk a decommissioned aircraft carrier last week.

Brazil: Navy scuttles 'Sao Paulo' in Atlantic Ocean

Environmentalists condemned Brazil for sinking a six-decade-old aircraft carrier “Sao Paulo” in the Atlantic Ocean saying that the ageing warship was packed with toxic materials and will cause destruction to the marine food chain. The decommissioned aircraft carrier was sunk in the ocean late in the afternoon on Friday by the Brazilian Navy after authorities failed to find a port ready to welcome the vessel.

Brazil’s Navy statement called the sinking “planned and controlled" which was at about 350 km (220 miles) off the Brazilian coast in the Atlantic Ocean. The Navy added that the sinking took place in an area with an approximate depth of 5,000 metres (16,000 feet).

According to environmentalists, the sinking of the warship will harm and pollute the marine food chain as the aircraft contained tonnes of asbestos, heavy metals and other toxic materials that would leach into the water. However, defence officials defended the sinking saying that the vessel was to be lowered down in the safest area.

The move by the Navy also received a strong reaction from Basel Action Network, a charitable non-governmental organisation, which champions global environmental health and justice by catalyzing a toxic-free future.

The Basel Action Network called out newly-elected Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva asking him to immediately halt the "dangerous” plan to scuttle the ship. This comes as Lula, who took office last month, vowed to reverse spike in environmental destruction under former President Jair Bolsonaro.

Brazil sinks six-decade-old aircraft carrier 'Sao Paulo' in Atlantic, why it got flak from environmentalists?

A former ally of Brazilian leader Jair Bolsonaro, credited to having had close ties with him in the past, has claimed that an aide to Bolsonaro tried to "coerce" him to join an alleged conspiracy to annul the October elections and keep Bolsonaro in power.

Senator Marcos do Val claimed at a news conference on Thursday that he was invited to a meeting on 9 December with the then president by a fellow member of congress, Daniel Silveira, to discuss a plan to "save Brazil".

At the meeting, Silveira allegedly asked Do Val to try to induce the country’s top electoral authority, the supreme court justice Alexandre de Moraes, into making compromising comments in a taped telephone conversation.

The recording would then be used to have De Moraes arrested, and prevent Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva from taking over as president on 1 January, Do Val claimed.

Bolsonaro "sat in silence" while Silveira laid out the plot, said Do Val, who claimed that he had refused to join the conspiracy.

De Moraes has ordered Do Val to testify before federal police within five days as part of the investigation into the former president’s alleged attempt to subvert democracy, Reuters reported.

The allegations add to a growing perception that Bolsonaro sought to overturn the results of the October elections, which Lula won by a slim margin. Bolsonaro has still not officially conceded the elections.

Reports in the Brazilian media suggest that such attempts culminated in the 8 January attack on the capital, Brasília, in which thousands of Bolsonaro supporters ransacked government buildings in what is being treated as an attempted power grab.
