Three of the world’s largest central banks have been accused of financing agri-business giants that are engaged in the destruction of the climate change-sensitive Amazon rainforest in Brazil, a report published on Wednesday claimed.

These three central banks— Bank of England, the US Federal Reserve and the European Central— have purchased millions of dollars in bonds issued by the companies linked to deforestation and land-grabbing, says a report called ‘Bankrolling Destruction’, published by the rights group Global Witness.

“Because these programmes are guaranteed by the respective governments in the UK, the US and EU Member States, this means taxpayers throughout those territories are unwittingly underwriting companies engaged in the destruction of the Amazon and other rainforests,” the report said.

The report has named three big agri-businesses operating in Brazil engaging in deforestation and that have sold bonds to the banks. These are: Cargill, Inc., the Archer-Daniels-Midland Company (ADM) and Bunge Ltd Financial Corp.

It has claimed that the Bank of England, since 2016, “purchased an undisclosed share in a £150m corporate bond issued by Cargill, Inc.”, while the European Central Bank bought an “undisclosed amount of debt issued by Bunge Finance Europe BV.”

And the US Federal Reserve, in the last two years, has bought bonds worth $16m issued by the Archer-Daniels-Midland Company (ADM) Bunge Ltd Financial Corp, and Cargill, Inc.

“All this comes despite the repeated public statements from all three central banks stressing the risks that climate change poses to financial stability and long-term economic growth,” the report noted.

Responding to the allegations, Cargill clarified that it was “committed to ending deforestation and conversion in our agricultural supply chains” while Bunge stated it was “committed to complying with all regulations either in local or global markets and to adhering to our own strict social-environmental policies,” reports The Guardian. ADM, on the other hand, has refused to comment.

Brazil is all set to go to polls on the October 2. Amid this, Brazil's leftist presidential candidate Lula da Silva says that he can win the elections in the first round, he made these comments at his final campaign.

Brazil polls: Leftist presidential candidate Lula da Silva expect to win elections in first round

Brazil's iconic yellow football jersey is a symbol of pride, passion and victory for the country. It is arguably one of the most recognised sporting jerseys in the world and is loved by football fans across the globe. For Brazilians, the yellow jersey is 'sacred' and unites them over their love for football.

The yellow shirt has been synonymous with Brazil's incredible success on the football pitch. It reminds fans of the likes of Pele, Romario, Zico and Ronaldinhio among others - some of the greatest to have graced the football pitch. However, the jersey is no more wanted by many in the country, who believe it has been tainted after its adoption by the right-wing supporters of president Jair Bolsonaro.

Known as the 'canarinho jersey', the iconic yellow football shirt was worn by millions of Bolsonaro supporters during political campaigns before the elections in the country in 2018, forcing many fans to give up on it.

The jersey's close association with the Brazilian president has not gone down well with many football supporters, who believe the shirt is now being misrepresented and being misused to spread a 'political agenda'.

“Football is something iconic for Brazil, it is what brings everybody together most of the time,” 25-year-old Isabela Guedes told Al Jazeera.

“When they (right-wing supporters) take something so meaningful for the country and use it with political intentions, it is like they are stealing it from us. I don’t feel comfortable hanging a flag on my window during the World Cup because I will be mistaken for people with completely different political views.

They have taken the flag and yellow jersey and turned them into political symbols," she explained.

Fans, who disagree with the ideologies of president Bolsonaro and his right-wing supporters, avoid wearing the jersey they once used to love unconditionally as they believe it now represents a political ideology different to theirs. Some have even joined calls for the complete abolishment of the iconic yellow shirt.

Brazil's national football team didn't always have the yellow-green stripes as their team shirt and it was designed in 1953, three years after the country's heartbreak at the hands of Uruguay at the World Cup final at Maracana in Rio de Janerio in 1950.

Brazil used to wear the white and blue jersey at the time, which was deemed 'unlucky' after their World Cup loss at home against Uruguay. In 1953, the Brazil football federation launched a design competition along with a newspaper, Correio da Manha, to find a new design for Brazil's new national kit.

The competition was won by 18-year-old Aldyr Garcia Schlee out of more than 300 entries. Garcia, who was left heartbroken after Brazil's final defeat against Uruguay, had designed a yellow shirt with green and yellow hoops along with blue shorts.

The jersey was finally adopted by the national team in the same year and would go on to become a symbol of joy and glamour that's associated with Brazilian football. Brazil won a record five World Cups with a host of legends producing magic on the football pitch wearing the iconic jersey.

However, analysts believe the joyous moments of Brazilin football are now being used to promote a particular political ideology, in contrast to the unity and the love that the jersey and the nation stand for.

Brazilian writer and filmmaker Joao Carlos Assumpcao led a campaign a couple of years ago, demanding the national football body abolish the yellow jersey and go back to wearing the white and blue kit. Several pro-democratic groups have also made attempts to disassociate the yellow shirt with Bolsonaro's political ideas and his supporters.

Despite the outrage and the angst against the use of the famous yellow shirt to promote political ideologies, Brazil are expected to continue playing in the Canarinho jersey at the upcoming 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

As Brazil gears up for its highly polarised presidential election, incumbent President Jair Bolsonaro has seemingly taken his campaign to a rather bizarre level. Bolsonaro, who was in the UK to attend Queen Elizabeth II's funeral, shot a video at a fuel pump in London and used it as an opportunity to show how expensive fuel was in the UK compared to Brazil. The far-right leader stood at the fuel pump and pointed at the price board while shooting a video. Bolsonaro stated that the 161.9 pence per litre cost of the fuel was 'practically double the average of many Brazilian states'. Bolsonaro further bragged that fuel in his country was among the cheapest in the world. Reportedly, the video was posted a night before the Queen's state funeral service. We are a country that does not want to discuss the legalisation of drugs, that does not want to discuss the legalisation of abortion and a country that does not accept gender ideology. Our slogan is: God, homeland, family and freedom,” said Bolsonaro at Mayfair home, situated less than four kilometres from Westminster Hall where the Queen was kept in the coffin. Jair Bolsonaro's bizarre 'election pitch'. Stands outside a UK pump and shoots a video

What is driving tensions ahead of Brazil's presidential election?

Few people know his name, but as President Jair Bolsonaro's ever-present sign-language interpreter, Fabiano Guimaraes is a familiar face to millions of Brazilians -- fame he now hopes will help him win a seat in Congress.

After three years at Bolsonaro's side, putting the president's words into Brazilian Sign Language, Guimaraes is jumping into politics himself, running in the October elections to represent Brasilia in the lower house as a member of the Bolsonaro-allied Republicanos party.

Guimaraes, 42, who is not deaf himself, started learning sign language at 18, when a pastor at the Evangelical church he attended in the northern suburbs of Rio de Janeiro paid for him to take a course.

He found he had a knack for "libras," as sign language is known in Brazil, and started serving as an interpreter for the church's deaf attendees.

But that was nothing compared to what he calls the "technical challenge" of interpreting for the far-right president, whose trademark linguistic sauce is heavy on folksy style, anti-establishment diatribes and occasional obscenities.

'You can talk?

Guimaraes has at times gone viral on social media for his rapid-fire gesticulations at Bolsonaro's side, especially during the weekly Facebook live videos where the president, who is up for reelection in October, speaks directly to his base.

In one, Guimaraes gestures effusively with an exasperated face mirroring Bolsonaro's own as the president unleashes a torrent of swear words aimed at his critics.

In another, he discreetly whispers the name of Agriculture Minister Marcos Montes when Bolsonaro forgets it.

"You can talk?" Bolsonaro asks him, surprised.

"I can talk!" he answers, and both burst out laughing.

"Appearing at the president's side has put me in the spotlight," Guimaraes, a diminutive man with a receding hairline and an animated face, told AFP in an interview at his home in Brasilia, where a cup with Bolsonaro's image is proudly displayed along with a carved wood sign reading "Jesus."

"I'm just a regular person who got where I am because God brought me here, improbably enough," he says.

'Democratic service'

Bolsonaro has prominently featured interpreters at his public appearances from day one.

At his presidential inauguration in 2019, his wife, Michelle, who is fluent in sign language, gave a speech in it.

Guimaraes, a Portuguese and Spanish teacher by training, joined the president's sign language team later that year, after taking the official exam for what he thought would be an interpreting job at the education ministry.

Instead, he was assigned to the presidential palace.

He says the job for him is a "democratic service."

"I bring the deaf community into the national political debate," he adds.

"Having an interpreter by the president's side, the two languages (speech and sign language) treated with equal importance, has given tremendous visibility to the deaf community in Brazil" -- about 10 million people in this country of 213 million.

Guimaraes is a big fan of Bolsonaro and his communication style.

The president "uses informal, colloquial language, but full of content," he says.

"It speaks to the Brazilian people. He brings them into the political debate. My mother-in-law, who left school after fourth grade, always said, 'The only politician I can understand is Bolsonaro.'"

He also admires the first lady, a fellow Evangelical Christian who has played a key role in encouraging him to run for Congress.

Guimaraes is campaigning on a platform of social inclusion and defense of family values.

He says he embraces both Bolsonaro's mottos of "God, nation, family and freedom" and the first lady's support of "sensitivity and inclusion."

"I want to make the connection between both those agendas," he says.

He is unconcerned that few people know his name.

"A lot of times people ask, 'Who's Fabiano?'"

So he will appear on the ballot on October 2 as "Fabiano, Bolsonaro's interpreter" -- a practice allowed under Brazilian election law.

"It's fantastic to be able to call myself that," he says.

"Appearing at the president's side has put me in the spotlight," Guimaraes, a diminutive man with a receding hairline and an animated face, told AFP in an interview at his home in Brasilia, where a cup with Bolsonaro's image is proudly displayed along with a carved wood sign reading "Jesus." "I'm just a regular person who got where I am because God brought me here, improbably enough," he says. 'Democratic service' Bolsonaro has prominently featured interpreters at his public appearances from day one. He says the job for him is a "democratic service." "I bring the deaf community into the national political debate," he adds. My mother-in-law, who left school after fourth grade, always said, 'The only politician I can understand is Bolsonaro.'" He also admires the first lady, a fellow Evangelical Christian who has played a key role in encouraging him to run for Congress. Guimaraes is campaigning on a platform of social inclusion and defense of family values. He says he embraces both Bolsonaro's mottos of "God, nation, family and freedom" and the first lady's support of "sensitivity and inclusion." "I want to make the connection between both those agendas," he says. He is unconcerned that few people know his name. "A lot of times people ask, 'Who's Fabiano?'" So he will appear on the ballot on October 2 as "Fabiano, Bolsonaro's interpreter" -- a practice allowed under Brazilian election law. "It's fantastic to be able to call myself that," he says.

With Bolsonaro currently trailing in the polls, the authorities have also been accused of foul play and in a statement, Juanita Goebertus Estrada, the director of the Americas division of Human Rights Watch, urged both candidates to “energetically condemn” any untoward incidents.

Lula, who was in Rio de Janeiro on Friday, said that there was a “climate of hatred in the electoral process which is completely abnormal”. The sharp rise in gold prices has driven a surge of illegal mining in Brazil, much of it in the Amazon rainforest, according to a study published Tuesday.

Gold output in Brazil, the world's 14th-biggest producer last year, has soared since the coronavirus pandemic pushed international prices to record highs.

Of the 112 tonnes of gold produced in Brazil last year, at least seven percent was illegal and 25 percent potentially illegal, found the study from the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG).

"From 2020 to 2021, there was a 44-percent increase in the amount of illegal gold produced," said the study.

The trend continued basically unchanged in the first six months of 2022, it found.

Lucrative profits are driving a gold rush in the Brazilian Amazon, where the amount of deforestation for mining set a record of 121 square kilometers (47 square miles) last year, according to satellite monitoring by the national space agency, INPE.

The study found at least 23 percent of mining deforestation in the Amazon, a key buffer against climate change, was on Indigenous reservations, conservation areas and other officially protected lands.

Illegal wildcat miners with links to organized crime have violently attacked Indigenous inhabitants in some areas, and studies show the mercury they use to separate gold from sediment is contaminating rivers.

The study found the vast majority of Brazil's illegal gold output -- 98 percent -- came from three municipalities in the northern state of Para, with the Kayapo and Munduruku Indigenous groups particularly hard-hit.

Federal prosecutors have urged President Jair Bolsonaro's government, which faces international criticism over the accelerating destruction of the Amazon, to adopt stricter controls on the origin of gold.

Prosecutors estimate the social and environmental damages from illegal gold mining at 39 billion reais ($7.5 billion) from January 2021 to June 2022, the study said.

That is nearly equal to Brazil's total estimated gold revenues for the period, 44.6 billion reais.

Total tax revenues from gold mining meanwhile came to less than two percent of the damages.

Apple Inc said on Tuesday it will appeal a Brazilian order banning it from selling iPhones without a battery charger, pushing back on claims that the company provides an incomplete product to consumers.

Apple to challenge ban on selling iPhones without chargers in Brazil

In a precedent-breaking move, the Brazilian government on Tuesday levied a fine of $2.38 million on Apple and ordered the company to stop selling its iPhones without a battery charger in the South American country.

In a precedent-breaking move, the Brazilian government on Tuesday levied a fine of $2.38 million on Apple and ordered the company to stop selling its iPhones without a battery charger in the South American country. According to a Reuters report, the fine was imposed by Brazil's ministry of justice which stated that the iPhone lacking an essential component was a "deliberate discriminatory practice against consumers". The ministry further ordered the cancellation of the sale of iPhone 12 and newer models while also suspending any other iPhone model that did not come bundled with the power charger. Read more: Apple's next big money-making idea: More ads in iPhones The Brazilian authorities outrightly rejected Apple's argument that removing the battery charger from its iPhones helped in reducing carbon emissions. It is yet to be seen if Apple complies with the Brazilian authorities, especially given that the new iPhone 14 launches in less than 24 hours. WATCH | iPhone 14 coming soon: Are you excited? | Tech It Out × It's not the first time that Apple has run into trouble for its decision. Earlier this year, a court in Brazil ordered Apple to pay a man $1,000 for not including a power adapter with his iPhone. Calling the practice a 'tie-sale', Judge Vanderlei Caires Pinheiro stated that "Apple obliged the consumer to purchase a second product of its exclusive manufacture which was an abusive and illegal commercial practice." Moreover, last year in October, a group of university students in China filed a lawsuit against the California-based company. In the lawsuit, the students argued that Apple was using 'concerns for environment' as an excuse to sell its MagSafe chargers separately. They further asserted that Apple's MagSafe chargers consumed more electricity than the wired ones, thereby nullifying the said 'environmental gains' by removing the shipping of chargers. It is pertinent to note that since 2020, Apple is selling its flagship product without a charger citing environmental concerns. Reportedly, the removal of chargers also helped Apple reduce the size of the iPhone's retail boxes which has, in turn, helped the company make more than $6 billion.
