Deforestation of Brazilian Amazon rainforests has set a new six-month record, said INPE national space agency on Friday. Since the beginning of the year, the world's largest tropical rainforest lost 3750 square kilometres of jungle. This is highest for a six-month period since record keeping began in 2016.&nbsp;

Previous worst reforestation destroyed 3605 square kilometres of jungle. This record was set last year

The new figure does not even include the final six days of June.

This year has seen the worst June in 15 years for forest fires.

Monthly records were also beaten in January and February, when deforestation is usually lower, and in April.

INPE satellites identified more than 2,500 fires in the Amazon last month, the largest number since more than 3,500 were recorded in June 2007, and an 11 percent increase over June 2021.

More than 7,500 fires have been recorded since the start of the year, another 17 percent increase on 2021 and the worst numbers since 2010.

"The dry season has barely begun in the Amazon and already we're beating environmental destruction records," said Cristiane Mazzetti, from Greenpeace Brazil.

Environmentalists and opposition figures accuse the government of President Jair Bolsonaro of implementing policies that encourage big businesses to damage the environment.

Brazil: Amazon deforestation sets new six-month record

Manchester United is aiming for a revamp ahead of the new EPL season. Despite that, the Red Devils haven't made a lot of signings. Thus, this has&nbsp;left Cristiano Ronaldo miffed&nbsp;and as per reports,&nbsp;he has&nbsp;been offered by his agent to move to Bayern Munich or Chelsea. While the Red Devils have maintained their stance that the star striker isn't up for sale, his agent&nbsp;Jorge Mendes is trying hard to find the best solution for the superstar footballer amid United's struggles for making a plethora of promising signings.

While there still is a couple of months for the summer transfer window to end, things might change with regard to Ronaldo. However, if he plans to switch and move to Chelsea or any other club, Man United might reportedly replace him with Paris Saint Germain (PSG) striker Neymar.&nbsp;

Talking about the 30-year-old Neymar, the Brazilian's case is quite opposite. Although the Brazilian hasn't indicated that he is willing to make a move from PSG, the French club&nbsp;is said to be looking to offload him for the right price. There are those who suggest that Neymar could be available for EUR 50 million this summer. Thus, Man United can certainly afford him at that price if they lose Ronaldo's services.&nbsp;

According to a report carried out in RMC Sport, Neymar remains top of Man United's wishlist as a potential replacement for&nbsp;Ronaldo.

After the Red Devils ended sixth in the last EPL season, there were speculations of Ronaldo leaving the club. Back then, he stated, "I was happy to be back in a club that really raised my career so it was unbelievable, the feeling when I came back again," Ronaldo said. "I was and still am very happy to be here," Ronaldo told Manchester United in an interview early this month. "The most important thing for me is to try to win the games and try to win some championship... but I believe that Manchester will be back where they belong. Sometimes it takes time, but I still believe," he added.

Thus, it remains to be seen how the situation unfolds for Ronaldo,&nbsp;also for Neymar, in the coming few weeks.

A monkey wielding a knife has terrorised an entire city in Brazil. A video has surfaced online, showing the primate brandishing a large kitchen knife running amuck in Corrente in northern-eastern Piaui state, which is near a large national park.

A resident recorded the whole incident on his phone, in which the monkey was seen sharpening the knife against a brick wall. The mischievous simian was seen holding the weapon tightly which is nearly the same size as him. The primate then waves the blade around as if threatening passers-by, reports Metro newspaper.

Local resident Alessandro Guerra – who shot the video – said that the monkey has been running riot in the town for a week.

&nbsp;“It lets people touch it, it even goes to their houses and many have already taken it by the hand,” He told local media.

“It’s been making a mess. It’s already damaged roofs and this week it showed up with this knife,” he added.

Guerra said that while there are people who have faced a lot of problems due to the presence of the primate, others find it funny.

“Those who are suffering from the mess are worried, as they can’t leave their doors or windows open. Others are finding it funny, it’s become a meme,” he added.

The city’s environment department said that it was aware of the incident, but it did not have the facilities to seize the animal.

Volkswagen asks for more time in Brazil human rights probe

Brazilian police have made an arrest related to the case of a missing British journalist and an indigenous expert who disappeared in the Amazon. The case of the two missing men is starting to take on the shape of a homicide investigation.

Brazil: Progress in Amazon missing case, second suspect arrested by police

Brazilian police and indigenous search teams dismissed reports on Monday that they had found the bodies of a British reporter and a Brazilian indigenous expert missing in the Amazon jungle, dashing hopes of a quick resolution in the week-old case.

On Sunday, police said search teams had found the belongings of freelance reporter Dom Phillips and Bruno Pereira, a former official at federal indigenous agency Funai, in a creek off the river where they were last seen on June 5.

However, a federal police statement and a spokesman for local indigenous association UNIVAJA, which has organized search efforts since June 5, denied subsequent reports of two bodies turned up in the search.

"I've spoken with the team in the field and it's not true," said Eliesio Marubo, a lawyer for UNIVAJA. "The search goes on."

More than 100 indigenous people, many in body paint and headdresses, marched on Monday in Atalaia do Norte, the nearest town to where Phillips and Pereira were last seen, to demand better treatment of native peoples and justice for the two men.

They were on a reporting trip in the remote jungle area near the border with Peru and Colombia that is home to the world's largest number of uncontacted indigenous people. The wild and lawless region has lured cocaine-smuggling gangs, along with illegal loggers, miners and hunters.

News of the pair's disappearance echoed globally, with human rights organizations, environmentalists and free press advocates urging Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro to step up the search.

Bolsonaro, who once faced tough questioning from Phillips at a news conference over weakening environmental law enforcement, said last week that the two men "were on an adventure that is not recommended" and speculated they could have been executed.

The case was thrown into confusion early on Monday by reports of a diplomatic briefing for the family of Phillips.

The Guardian reported that a Brazilian diplomat told Paul Sherwood, the journalist's brother-in-law, that authorities were working to identify two bodies tied to a tree near the river.

No authorities or search teams in Brazil provided any corroboration of that development.

A police statement on Sunday described belongings of the two men that had been recovered, including an ID card for Pereira. A firefighter on a search team told reporters of a backpack with clothes and a laptop tied to a tree trunk near the river.

Brazilian police had also said late on Friday that they were analyzing "organic material" found in the river to see if it was human, but four people involved in the investigation told Reuters it seemed more likely to be of animal origin.

The material was found near the port of Atalaia do Norte, more than 40 miles (65 km) downstream from where Phillips and Pereira were last seen on a slow-moving river, the sources said. The material's condition suggested it could have been scraps from a nearby butcher rather than remains carried downstream.

The Brazilian embassy in London confirmed it has been in contact with the Phillips family, at their request, but would not comment on the details provided in the briefing. Relatives of Phillips could not be reached for comment.

State police detectives involved in the investigation told Reuters they are focusing on poachers and illegal fisherman in the area, who clashed often with Pereira as he organized indigenous patrols of the local reservation.

Police have arrested one fisherman, Amarildo da Costa, known as "Pelado," on a weapons charge and are keeping him in custody as they investigate the case.

Costa's lawyers and family have said he fished legally on the river and denied he had any role in the men's disappearance.

No bodies found in hunt for British journalist, Brazil police say

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro said on Monday (June 13) that human remains have been discovered in the search for British journalist Dom Phillips and Brazilian indigenous expert Bruno Pereira. Both of them disappeared a week ago in the Amazon after receiving threats.&nbsp;

As quoted by news agency AFP, Bolsonaro said: "The evidence leads us to believe something bad was done to them, because human innards were found floating in the river, which are now undergoing DNA testing."&nbsp;

Earlier in the day, Phillips's niece Dominique Davies told AFP that "two bodies have been found" while searching. It was assumed that the bodies were of Phillips and Pereira. However, the police had denied that and stated that so far they have discovered personal items belonging to the pair.&nbsp;

A report by Guardian also mentioned that the family has been informed that bodies feared to be those of Phillips and Pereira have been found. The report mentioned that an aide to the Brazilian ambassador to the UK told Phillips's family during a phone call early on Monday.&nbsp;

As quoted by the media outlet, Paul Sherwood, Phillips’s brother-in-law said: "He said he wanted us to know that … they had found two bodies".&nbsp;

"He didn't describe the location and just said it was in the rainforest and he said they were tied to a tree and they hadn't been identified yet," Sherwood said.&nbsp;

The 57-year-old Phillips, a veteran correspondent and Pereira, who is a respected 41-year-old indigenous specialist went missing on June 5. The families have been enduring an anguished wait for news on their fate.&nbsp;

The two went missing while on a reporting trip to Brazil's Javari Valley, a remote jungle region rife with illegal fishing, logging, mining and drug trafficking.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, it is reported that the police have arrested a suspect in the case. The 41-year-old Amarildo Costa de Oliveira, nicknamed "Pelado" was arrested in alleged connection to the case. Locals have said they saw him threaten Phillips and Pereira, then pursue their boat with his own just before they disappeared.&nbsp;

Bolsonaro says human remains found in search for British reporter and indigenous expert

Finally, the police made some headway in the search for the missing British journalist Dom Phillips and indigenous expert Bruno Pereira. The belongings of the scribe and his companion have been found by the search teams, said Brazilian police on Sunday. Since last week, the duo had been missing in the Amazon rainforest. The clothing, which belonged to Pereira, has been found along with his health identification card, a backpack with Phillips’ clothes and the boots of both men, said police in a statement. The Equinox backpack, which contained clothes and a laptop, was discovered being tied to a half-sunken tree trunk in the area where the duo was last seen on Sunday, a fireman leading a search team told media. &nbsp;

Missing British reporter, companion’s belongings found in Brazil, say cops

Police in Brazil said on Friday that search teams have found "apparently human" remains in the river where a British reporter was seen last in the Amazon rainforest. This may be the biggest break yet in the five-day investigation.

Federal police said that the "organic material" was being sent for forensic analysis. Blood found on a suspect's boat, which will be compared with genetic material from journalist Dom Phillips, will also be sent for forensic analysis. Phillips was accompanied by a travel companian, indigenous expert Bruno Pereira.

A Brazilian judge had ordered the suspect, a fisherman charged with illegal possession of restricted ammunition, to be held for another 30 days while police investigate whether he is involved, according to a lawyer for a local indigenous group.

State Judge Jacinta Silva dos Santos said the proceedings are under seal and she could not comment on whether other audiences are planned for the fisherman Amarildo da Costa, known locally as "Pelado."

Police have said Costa was one of the last people to see Phillips and Pereira on Sunday, when they went missing after visiting the fisherman's riverside community of Sao Gabriel.

Eliesio Morubo, the lawyer for the Union of Indigenous Peoples of the Javari Valley (UNIVAJA), said the judge agreed to keep the fisherman jailed for 30 days because the case involved a possible "heinous crime" such as murder and hiding bodies.

'Apparently human' remains found where British journalist vanished: Brazil police

Brazilian search teams have&nbsp;found&nbsp;"apparently&nbsp;human"&nbsp;remains&nbsp;in the river where a British&nbsp;journalist&nbsp;was last seen in the Amazon rainforest, police said on Friday, in what may be the biggest break yet for the five-day investigation.

Neymar scored a pair of penalties to move to within four goals of Pele at the top of the country`s all-time scoring list as Brazil cruised to a 5-1 win over fellow World Cup qualifiers South Korea at Seoul World Cup Stadium on Thursday.

The Paris St Germain striker netted either side of halftime to move onto 73 goals in 118 appearances for his country and close in on the three-time World Cup winner`s record in a comfortable win for Tite`s side. Richarlison gave Brazil the lead in the seventh minute and, although Hwang Ui-jo levelled for Korea just after the half-hour mark, it was the visitors who always looked more likely to prevail.

Neymar netted from the spot to put his side back in front three minutes before halftime and he was on hand with another penalty in the 57th minute before late goals from Philippe Coutinho and Gabriel Jesus put the seal on a comprehensive win. Billed in some quarters as a battle between Neymar and South Korea`s Tottenham Hotspur forward Son Heung-min, it was Brazilian and his team mates who dominated in an often one-sided contest.

The South Americans took the lead early when Alex Sandro stormed into the penalty area and cut back to Fred, whose attempt was redirected past Kim Seung-gyu by Richarlison from close range. Brazil had already seen Thiago Silva`s header ruled out for offside while Raphinha and Dani Alves also went close before the Koreans scored against the run of play in the 31st minute.

Receiving possession with his back to goal, Hwang used all his upperbody strength to hold off Silva before turning to fire his right foot shot into the far corner. The Brazilians, though, were back in front in the 42nd minute when referee Ryuji Sato awarded a penalty following a VAR review as Lee Yong upended Sandro and Neymar coolly slotted in.

He was even more composed when he rolled his second spot kick of the game home three minutes before the hour mark after Sandro was again brought down in the box, this time by Kim Young-gwon. Coutinho added the fourth with 10 minutes remaining and Jesus scored a fifth three minutes into injury time when he sprinted through the Korea defence to score low into the corner.

Brazil worst hit by disasters caused by climate change

President Jair Bolsonaro sent his condolences Monday to the families of 91 people who died in torrential rains in northeastern Brazil, as rescue workers continued a grim search for victims.

Releasing an updated toll, authorities said 26 people remained missing in the region around the city of Recife, where days of downpours triggered flooding and landslides that swept away virtually everything in their path.

Bolsonaro posted a video on Twitter that showed him flying in a helicopter over a disaster zone where brown floodwater still inundated large areas and gashes of mud scarred hillsides where houses once stood.

"I tried to land, but the pilots' recommendation was that, given the instability of the soil, we could have an accident. So we decided against it," the far-right president told a news conference.

He recalled a string of devastating floods in Brazil that have killed hundreds of people in recent months, and which experts say are being aggravated by climate change.

"We send our condolences to the families. Our top priority is comforting the families and getting aid to the population," he said.

'Can't eat or sleep'

The force of the landslides ripped apart houses in neighborhoods including Jardim Monteverde, a poor community just outside Recife.

Rescue workers have found more than 20 bodies buried in the mud that tore through the neighborhood Saturday, and said they expect to find more.

"I can't eat or sleep. It's just so much pain," said Maria Lucia da Silva, a 56-year-old resident whose neighbors' house was destroyed, killing 11 people. A 12th member of the family remains missing.

"I've lived here for 40 years. They were like my family. I watched a lot of them grow up," Da Silva told AFP, crying behind her sunglasses.

Dozens of emergency workers are still digging through the ocean of muck, as clean-up crews in yellow uniforms clear the streets, slowly working their way through the wreckage, an AFP photographer saw.

In just hours on Friday and Saturday, parts of Pernambuco received 70 percent of the rain they usually get in the entire month of May.

"We never saw so much rain fall in so little time," said 60-year-old retiree Mario Guadalupe.

"I saw the landslide happen. First part of the hill gave way, then it was just a tsunami of mud. It nearly took out my house."

'Screaming for help'

Such tragedies are becoming a familiar script in Brazil.

They tend to hit hardest in poor neighborhoods, especially hillside favelas, or slums.

In February, 233 people were killed in floods and landslides in the southeastern city of Petropolis, in Rio de Janeiro state.

In January, torrential rains claimed at least 28 lives in southeastern Brazil, mostly in Sao Paulo state.

And in December, storms killed 24 people in the northeastern state of Bahia.

On that occasion, Bolsonaro -- who trails leftist ex-president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in polling ahead of elections in October -- faced criticism for not interrupting his year-end beach vacation to visit the disaster zone.

"Unfortunately these tragedies happen, a country the size of a continent has its share of problems," Bolsonaro said Monday.
On the ground, many residents were angry.

"A lot of people lost everything -- even their lives. We're screaming for help. We need food, houses, clothing. So don't just come here to campaign. We need action," said Jardim Monteverde resident Jailson Gomes de Souza, 34.

Bolsonaro's government announced it has allocated one billion reais ($210 million) in emergency and reconstruction funds for areas hit by the latest storms.

Meteorologists say the heavy rains lashing Brazil's northeast are the product of a typical seasonal phenomenon called "eastern waves" -- areas of atmospheric disturbance that move from Africa to Brazil's northeastern coastal region.

The region remains at "very high" risk for further floods, said the national disaster monitoring center, Cemaden.

"We urge people to respect the alerts issued by the authorities" and evacuate if necessary, said Regional Development Minister Daniel Ferreira.

Bolsonaro views disaster zone from air after deadly Brazil rains

At least 79 people have lost their lives due to the heavy rainfall and the flooding in the Northeastern part of Brazil. Heavy rains are expected to continue for the next few days

Landslide after torrential rains in Brazil's Pernambuco

Brazil flood: Death toll reaches 57, thousands displaced

Torrential rains in northeastern Brazil have left at least 44 people dead and dozens missing, the government said Sunday, as rescuers capitalized on a lull in downpours to search for survivors.

"We registered 44 dead, 56 missing, 25 injured, 3,957 without shelter and 533 displaced," Minister of Regional Development Daniel Ferreira told a press conference in Recife, the capital of hard-hit northeastern Pernambuco state.

The disaster is the latest in a recent series of deadly landslides and floods triggered by extreme weather in Brazil.

The number of dead had mounted from 34 since Saturday, with at least 28 killed in landslides, as heavy rains caused rivers to overflow and torrents of mud swept away everything in their path.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/watch-two-brazil-cops-torture-38-year-old-black-man-to-death-spark-outrage-482490">Watch: Two Brazil cops torture 38-year-old Black man to death, spark outrage</a>

Authorities warned that heavy rain was forecast to continue Sunday, but the storm subsided in the morning.

As the weather broke, some 1,200 personnel resumed search and rescue work, state officials said, but Ferreira urged caution.

"Although it has stopped raining now, we are forecasting heavy rains for the next few days," he said.

"So the first thing is to maintain self-protection measures."

Between Friday night and Saturday morning, rainfall volume reached 70 percent of what was forecast for all of May in some parts of Recife.

'Tragedy'

Images circulated on local media showed rescue workers and volunteers clearing heaps of debris in Jardim Monteverde, on the border between Recife and the municipality of Jaboatao dos Guararapes, where 19 died Saturday morning in a landslide that ripped through precariously built homes.

Luiz Estevao Aguiar, who lives in a different municipality, lost 11 relatives in the disaster, he told TV Globo.

"My sister, my brother-in-law, 11 people from my family died. It was difficult... I did not expect this," he said tearfully.

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro said Sunday he would travel to Recife on Monday following the "tragedy."

Over the past year, hundreds of Brazilians have died in flooding and landslides brought on by torrential downpours.

In February, more than 230 people were killed in the city of Petropolis, the Brazilian then-empire's 19th-century summer capital, in Rio de Janeiro state.

Early last month 14 more were killed by flooding and landslides in the state.

Experts say Brazil's rainy season downpours are being augmented by La Nina -- the cyclical cooling of the Pacific Ocean -- and by climate change.

Torrential rains in northeastern Brazil have left at least 44 people dead and dozens missing, the government said Sunday, as rescuers capitalized on a lull in downpours to search for survivors.

As the weather broke, some 1,200 personnel resumed search and rescue work, state officials said, but Ferreira urged caution. "Although it has stopped raining now, we are forecasting heavy rains for the next few days," he said. "So the first thing is to maintain self-protection measures." Between Friday night and Saturday morning, rainfall volume reached 70 percent of what was forecast for all of May in some parts of Recife. 'Tragedy' Images circulated on local media showed rescue workers and volunteers clearing heaps of debris in Jardim Monteverde, on the border between Recife and the municipality of Jaboatao dos Guararapes, where 19 died Saturday morning in a landslide that ripped through precariously built homes. Luiz Estevao Aguiar, who lives in a different municipality, lost 11 relatives in the disaster, he told TV Globo. "My sister, my brother-in-law, 11 people from my family died. It was difficult... I did not expect this," he said tearfully. Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro said Sunday he would travel to Recife on Monday following the "tragedy." Over the past year, hundreds of Brazilians have died in flooding and landslides brought on by torrential downpours. Because a hotter atmosphere holds more water, global warming increases the risk and intensity of flooding from extreme rainfall.
