Lula has stated that he wants to improve strained ties with international governments, including those with the United States, that existed under his far-right predecessor Jair Bolsonaro.

On January 9, a day after Bolsonaro supporters invaded Brasilia's government buildings, Biden extended an invitation to Lula to visit the White House.

It was an assault reminiscent of when Trump's supporters stormed the Capitol in Washington two years ago.

Torres was wanted under a Supreme Court warrant for alleged "collusion" with the rioters and stands accused of "omission" in his most recent job as security chief for Brasilia. He has been fired from this post.

The country's new justice minister Flavio Dino said on Friday that authorities would give Torres time until Monday to return to Brazil, or face extradition. Dino also confirmed the discovery of a draft decree at his predecessor's house which proposed emergency steps for the possible "correction" of the October election that President Lula da Silva won.&nbsp;

The draft showed Jair Bolsonaro's name at the bottom but Dino said the authorship was unknown. Published in the &nbsp;Folha de S. Paulo newspaper on Thursday, the draft foresees a "state of defense" for the Superior Electoral Court (TSE). The draft said the aim is "the preservation and immediate restoration of the transparency and correction of the 2022 presidential electoral process."&nbsp;

The video claimed that Lula da Silva was not voted into office, but rather was chosen by the Supreme Court and Brazil’s electoral authority. She showed media camera crew torn rugs, damaged floors, a broken window, a ceiling stained by water leaks, a massive banquet hall left bare of furniture and other issues, said a South China Morning Post report. 
 
Brazil's presidential palace, a 1950s masterpiece by architect Oscar Niemeyer, reportedly does not only see damage to the furniture but also to invaluable pieces of art housed within. Some of the artwork is reportedly missing.

A tapestry made by Brazil's most celebrated 20th-century artist Emiliano Di Cavalcanti has been damaged as it has been moved from the library and in the sun. There are speculations that it will have to be restored.

Bolsonaro has not recognised Lula's victory against him in October elections.

Lula's narrow victory over Bolsonaro will be certified by Brazil's national electoral authority on Monday.

Bolsonaro told his supporters that the armed forces were Brazil's bulwark to prevent socialism in the country, adding that "nothing is lost" and their cause would prevail one day.

"The Armed Forces are united. They owe loyalty to our people and respect to the constitution, and they are responsible for our freedom", he said.

"Unlike other people, we are going to win," he said.

Lula’s victory is far more important than that of the left in that region. Brazil’s population, the size of its economy and its place in international bodies and multilateral forums invest the political outcome with a significance that should resonate far beyond South America. &nbsp;

Conventional, and dominant narratives, have presented that course of democracy as moving from the West to the rest of the world. (This “West” excludes South America). Less known and taught are that South American countries experienced their first democratic impulses in the early decades of the nineteenth century. The revival of truly inclusive and representative democracies in South America striving for equity, justice and accountability and founded on a new political language may now shape new accounts of the history of democracy. &nbsp;

Anachronistic accounts of history that flog the theme of the best of democracy flowing only from the West to the rest may be in for revision. At a time when the US, Europe and Asia are witnesses to the rise of backward nationalism, violent majoritarianism and neo-fascist forces, election outcomes in South America are cause for hope. &nbsp;

There is a message in these mandates that the 'advanced' West would do well to heed.

Brazil: Bolsonaro and Lula cast votes in final round of election

On Friday, former US president Donald Trump praised Jair Bolsonaro as a "great" leader and urged Brazilians to give him a second term in office.

"VOTE for President JAIR BOLSONARO -- HE WILL NEVER LET YOU DOWN!!!" Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.

Trump referred to Sunday's second-round vote as a "great day for Brazil."&nbsp;

Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, Bolsonaro's rival, came under fire from him, who he referred to as "a Radical Left Lunatic who will quickly destroy your country."&nbsp;

Trump promoted Bolsonaro's reelection for the second time in the post, calling him "a fantastic man, one of the great presidents of any country in the world" prior to the first-round vote on October 2.

The Trump of the Tropics has been used to describe Bolsonaro. The former military officer's brazen demeanour and contempt for the media mirror the previous US president's attitude.&nbsp;

Instead of using his nickname, "Lula," Trump derided Bolsonaro's opponent by calling him&nbsp;"Lulu."&nbsp;

In the Sunday runoff, polls indicate that Lula has a slight advantage, although Bolsonaro shocked polling companies by outperforming expectations in the first round on October 2.

Taking a page from Trump, Bolsonaro has claimed without evidence that the election may have been compromised by fraud and has warned that if he loses, he may reject the results.

Despite keeping a larger distance from Bolsonaro, President Joe Biden met with him in June at a regional gathering in Los Angeles and avoided outright condemnation.

The comments were made in advance of the Oct. 30 runoff election for president, in which right-wing Bolsonaro is trailing former leftist President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in the polls. The remarks were made at a virtual event on cooperativism.&nbsp;

Bolsonaro's campaign took a knock after Folha de So Paulo reported last week that the government was considering eliminating a constitutional requirement to raise the minimum wage annually by at least the inflation rate from the previous year.

According to studies conducted by the ministry, the ability to deduct medical and educational costs from income tax should be eliminated, according to a story published in the O Estado de S. Paulo newspaper on Tuesday. The middle class would be primarily impacted by such a measure.&nbsp;

In both instances, Guedes confirmed the existence of internal studies but blamed Lula's Workers Party (PT) employees who work in the ministry for their creation and disclosure.&nbsp;

Less than two weeks from the run-off elections to decide Brazil's next president, the incumbent Jair Bolsonaro and the challenger Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva are mathematically tied, said a new poll published on Wednesday (October 19).

Datafolha said Lula now has 49% of voter support against 45% for Bolsonaro. The poll has error margin of 2 per cent up or down, that means both the candidates may be tied at 47 per cent each.

The poll percentage of two candidates was 49 per cent for Lula and 44 per cent for Bolsonaro five days ago.

The survey has also shown that 94 per cent of Brazilian voters have decided who they will vote for. This leaves 6 per cent of voters both candidates will try hard to sway.

It was the first Datafolha survey since the presidential debate on Sunday, where Bolsonaro attacked corruption scandals under Lula's Workers Party, which governed from 2003 to 2016.

Datafolha interviewed 2,912 voters between Oct. 17-19.

Datafolha was one of the several polling firms that received&nbsp;criticism&nbsp;for underestimating support for Bolsonaro in the first round of voting. In the election, Lula had garnered 48 per cent while Bolsonaro got 43 per cent of the votes.
