Brazil police accuses Bolsonaro and his son Eduardo of meddling in the coup trial

Brazil's former president Jair Bolsonaro was put under house arrest by a Supreme Court judge on Monday (Aug. 4) for defying court restrictions on his social media use. Justice Alexandre de Moraes accused Bolsonaro, 70, of repeatedly violating a ban on public statements and social media use — a condition imposed last month as the far-right leader stands trial for plotting a coup to stay in power after losing to President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. Citing Bolsonaro's "repeated failure" to comply with restrictions, the judge ordered that Bolsonaro will now remain confined to his residence in Brasilia. Brazil charges former President Bolsonaro in alleged coup plot

Facing serious allegations of plotting a coup in the South American nation following the 2022 election loss, Bolsonaro is now hoping to stage a political comeback.

The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday (Nov 28) that Bolsonaro is hoping for Trump to threaten Brazil with sanctions if courts bar him from running for the top office until 2030 for attacking the country’s voting system.

“Trump is back, and it’s a sign we’ll be back, too,” the US newspaper quoted Bolsonaro as saying.

Bolsonaro’s statement comes just days after Brazil police released a damning report linking the former president to an alleged design to overturn the 2022 election that he lost to his left-wing rival and incumbent President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

The report claimed that Bolsonaro “planned, acted and was directly and effectively aware of the actions of the criminal organisation aiming to launch a coup d’etat and eliminate the democratic rule of law.”

Bolsonaro finding own political revival in Trump’s win, hoping for US sanctions on Brazil

Brazil's former president, Jair Bolsonaro, is once again under scrutiny, this time for allegedly "harassing" a humpback whale while riding a jetski during a public holiday.

This investigation adds to a series of probes into Bolsonaro's actions, ranging from environmental offences to political misconduct, reported the Guardian.

Known as "Captain Chainsaw" for his anti-environmental policies during his four-year administration, Bolsonaro now faces allegations of environmental misconduct during a jetski excursion near São Sebastião on Brazil's south-eastern coastline.

In June, a man resembling Bolsonaro was reportedly filmed within 15 metres of a humpback whale, using a mobile phone to capture the distressed behaviour of the whale.

Brazilian law prohibits the deliberate harassment of cetaceans, including humpback whales, and mandates a minimum distance of 100 metres for vessels with engines running.

Environmental agency Ibama enforces regulations that prohibit vessels from approaching marine animals too closely and engaging in activities that may disturb them. Such regulations include maintaining a distance of 300 metres from dolphins or whales and avoiding excessive noise in their vicinity.

Brazil's Bolsonaro faces probe for ‘harassing’ humpback whale in latest legal woe

Brazilian Army Lieutenant Colonel Mauro Cid, who was the aide of former president Jair Bolsonaro, has told police that after selling two luxury watches the ex-president had received as official gifts, he gave him tens of thousands of dollars, The Guardian reported.

Last month, police raided the homes of Bolsonaro allies who were accused of reselling gifts including jewellery from foreign dignitaries for the "illicit enrichment of" the former president.

The investigators earlier said that Cid, one of the accused, mentioned in an audio message that "25,000 dollars in cash" would be intended for the ex-president after the sale of certain goods.

Earlier this month, the Supreme Court of the nation authorised a cooperation deal between Cid and the country's Federal Police and last week, Cid was released on parole from the military prison in Brasília. He was moved to a housing development for the military.

The report mentioned that the deal apparently needs Cid to give details regarding all the suspected crimes committed when Bolsonaro was in office, which included an alleged coup plot.

Bolsonaro's ex-aide reportedly admits to selling official gifts for ex-president: Report

A day after the trial began against pro-Bolosnaro rioters who stormed the Supreme Court of Brazil, the National Congress of Brazil and the Planalto Presidential Palace on January 8, the apex court has sentenced a defendant to 17 years in prison on charges including an attempted coup.

51-year-old Aecio Pereira, the accused, was unanimously convicted by the court's 11 justices who found him guilty of all five charges he faced for invading the Congress building. Pereira faced charges related to violent uprising against the rule of law, attempted coup, armed criminal conspiracy, damaging a national heritage site and aggravated property destruction.

"The (rioters') objective was to violently seize Brasilia and spread a criminal attack against the rule of law across the country," said Justice Cristiano Zanin while delivering the verdict.

During the hearing, Pereira denied any wrongdoing but an obscene video that he made on the day, wearing a T-shirt marked "Military Intervention" at the Senate president's table proved to be one of the jarring pieces of evidence against him.

His lawyers argued that Pereira, a former employee of the Sao Paulo municipal sanitation company, was unarmed and committed no acts of violence. However, in the video, he could be heard urging fellow Bolsonaro supporters to "take to the streets".

Pereira is one of the four defendants who will be facing music in court for their actions, which drew eerie similarities to the January 6 insurrection attempt by former US president Donald Trump supporters in 2021 at the US Capitol Hill.

Brazil: 17-year prison sentence for pro-Bolsonaro defendant in January 8 riots

Federal police will examine Jair Bolsonaro, the former president of Brazil, and his wife on Thursday in relation to claims that they attempted to pilfer expensive jewelry and other things received as official presents from other nations. In separate, concurrent interrogations, Bolsonaro, former first lady Michelle Bolsonaro, six former aides, and other accused accomplices will be questioned. Police are looking into claims that the gang planned to sell off diamond jewelry from the Swiss luxury brand Chopard, a Rolex watch covered with diamonds, and other items given to Bolsonaro for his "illicit enrichment."

Brazil: Ex-President Jair Bolsonaro and his wife questioned on jewellery scandal

Police in Brazil on Friday (August 11) raided homes of aides of former Brazil president Jair Bolsonaro. These aides have been accused of reselling gifts from foreign dignitaries, including jewellery for the "illicit enrichment of" the former president.

Bolsonaro, a divisive right-winger, has categorically denied allegations of wrongdoing. His lawyers have said that he "never appropriated or misappropriated any public good," in a statement posted on the G1 news site.

The scandal was reported earlier this year. The newspaper Estado de Sao Paulo reported that customs officials had seized some jewels from a government aide. The aide had attempted to bring them into the country undeclared in his backpack in 2021.

According to Brazilian law, public officials are barred from keeping expensive gifts.

Elements of the police investigation were disclosed in a judgment by Supreme Court judge Alexandre de Moraes to justify search warrants carried out by federal police on Friday at the homes of former Bolsonaro aides.

"The evidence collected showed (the existence) during the presidency of Jair Bolsonaro, of a network to divert goods of a high amount which were offered to him," part of the judgment read.

"Beyond allowing an inadmissible enrichment of the President of the Republic... it is possible that the Brazilian head of state was co-opted by foreign nations through these assets," investigators believe.

The investigators also reported goods placed in "a suitcase transported on the presidential plane on December 30". At that time, Bolsonaro was leaving Brazil for the United States. This was two days before the inauguration of his successor Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

The state gifts include two sculptures given by Bahrain during a state visit in 2021. They also include gifts from Saudi Arabia. This consisted of a luxury watch and a luxury fountain pen.

One of those suspected of reselling these gifts is Mauro Cid, a former top aide to Bolsonaro, who has been in prison since May over falsification of Covid-19 vaccination certificates.

Investigators say that Cid mentioned in an audio message that "25,000 dollars in cash" would be obtained which will be for the ex-president.

Known for a brash style that earned him the nickname "Tropical Trump," Bolsonaro, the former army captain turned congressman surged to prominence as a presidential candidate in 2018 by playing to voters disgusted with corruption and economic mismanagement.

After presiding over a presidency marked by scandals including his handling of Covid-19, Bolsonaro has now been barred from office for eight years over his unproven claims of massive fraud in the country's election system.

Brazil: Police raid Bolsonaro aides over jewels probe

Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has denied allegations of plotting a coup to stay in power after losing the 2022 election to Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, media reports said. This came after, on June 30, the electoral justice system found Bolsonaro guilty of "abuses of power" during his campaign for a second term and banned him from seeking or holding public office for eight years.

Bolsonaro was questioned by the Federal Police for two hours regarding accusations made by Senator Marcos do Val. Bolsonaro stated that he had no relationship with the senator but admitted to meeting with him and former lawmaker Daniel Silveira in December 2022.

However, Bolsonaro said that the meeting focused on political matters and not on conspiracies or coups. The former president also reaffirmed his commitment to the constitutional order and stated that he would never agree to such a plot.

Alleged plot

Senator Marcos do Val, who has given multiple conflicting accounts since February, claimed that Bolsonaro and Silveira encouraged him to arrange a meeting with Supreme Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes, who also presides over The Superior Electoral Court (TSE), the highest body of the Brazilian electoral justice.

According to do Val, the plan involved secretly recording the conversation with de Moraes and inducing him to make biased statements in favour of Lula, which could then be used to invalidate the election and keep Bolsonaro in power. Bolsonaro, however, denied that the name of Alexandre de Moraes was mentioned during the December 8 meeting.

Investigation

De Moraes revealed that do Val informed him about the alleged plot in December but did not file a formal criminal complaint. De Moraes considered the accusations unofficial and dismissed them as "ridiculous."

“He told me that it was a question of ‘intelligence’ and that he could not confirm it. I just thanked him, because what is not official does not exist,” the judge said earlier in relation to the matter.

However, after do Val made the allegations public, de Moraes ordered an investigation as part of a broader probe into the events of January 8, when Bolsonaro supporters stormed Congress, the Supreme Court, and the presidential palace in an attempt to incite a military coup against Lula.

Bolsonaro's statement to the Federal Police on Wednesday marked the fourth time he has been questioned since returning to Brazil from his trip to Florida before Lula's inauguration.

The investigations also involve allegations related to expensive jewellery he received from Saudi Arabia and failed to declare, as well as corruption and fraud linked to his administration's handling of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Brazil ex-president Bolsonaro denies plotting coup to stay in power

Four out of the seven judges on the Superior Electoral Tribunal in Brazil have voted to punish Bolsonaro for alleged abuses of his power, giving the court the majority it needs to ban the far-right former president from politics for an entire eight years.

Brazil court moves towards barring Bolsonaro from politics

The Supreme Electoral Court of Brazil has made a decision to bar former president Jair Bolsonaro from running for office for a duration of eight years, media reports said. Bolsonaro was found guilty of abusing his power during the previous presidential election by spreading false claims about the vulnerability of electronic voting machines to hacking and fraud.

The former president's actions were deemed detrimental to Brazilian democracy. Bolsonaro's legal team is anticipated to challenge the verdict, asserting that his statements did not impact the outcome of the election.

In a decision reached by a majority vote of its seven judges, the Superior Electoral Court has convicted the 68-year-old former president for abusing his power during the last presidential election which he narrowly lost to leftist candidate Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

The decision now opens up the opportunity for new leaders to emerge within the Brazilian right wing, which has been relatively inactive in opposition even after its success in congressional elections.

What was the trial?

The trial at the electoral court centred on Bolsonaro's actions regarding his hosting of foreign ambassadors in July of the election year. During the meeting, he expressed doubts about the reliability of Brazil's electronic voting machines. Opponents claimed that this gathering was a deliberate tactic to sow distrust in the electoral process.

The meeting was broadcasted on live television and various social media platforms, including YouTube, Instagram, and Facebook.

Judge's statement

Benedito Goncalves, the judge overseeing the case, accused Bolsonaro of delivering a "deceitful monologue about electronic voting and the electoral justice system . . . using scraps of false information already so naturalised in his rhetoric”.

The court also presented a draft document discovered in the home of Bolsonaro's justice minister, Anderson Torres, which outlined plans to overturn the election results. This document demonstrated a broader strategy to cast doubt on the integrity of the electoral system.

Bolsonaro's response

Bolsonaro denied any wrongdoing and argued that the meeting with ambassadors had governmental, rather than electoral, purposes. He plans to appeal the court's decision at the Supreme Court. “I did not attack the voting system. I just showed its possible flaws," he said.

As a result of the verdict, Bolsonaro has been banned from participating in any elections, including local, state, and federal, for eight years. The ban applies retroactively from the first round of the 2022 presidential election, effectively barring him from contesting any polls until 2030.

However, he is still permitted to engage in political activities and expressed his intention to remain fully involved.
