One of the closest aides of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro is found to have harboured plans for a military coup in the country to prevent the transition of power following the October presidential elections last year.

Lieutenant Colonel Mauro Cid has been accused by Brazilian police of having explored the use of military force to interfere with the democratic handover of power. He is already in police custody over allegations that he faked the COVID-19 vaccination card for the former president.

Coup allegations against Bolsonaro’s closest aide

The reports of one of Bolsonaro’s aides exploring the possibility of resorting to military means to prevent the smooth transition of power first emerged in the news magazine Veja. Now, Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes has unsealed the police report to support these damning claims.

According to the police report, Cid looked into “the possibility of using the armed forces, on an exceptional basis, to ensure the independent and harmonious functioning of the Powers of the Union, through determination of the President of the Republic."

He has also been accused of gathering "documents with the aim of obtaining 'legal and judicial' support for the execution of a coup d'état."

However, it was still unknown whether the highly objectionable content found on Cid’s phone ever reached Bolsonaro.

Evidence mounts against Bolsonaro

Brazilian President Lula da Silva has openly accused Bolsonaro on several occasions of involvement in coup attempts. In response, Bolsonaro and his legal team have consistently maintained his innocence. However, Bolsonaro himself is currently under investigation for various matters, including his potential role in instigating the attack that occurred on January 8.

The recent discovery of material on Cid's phone has added to the mounting evidence suggesting that members of Bolsonaro's inner circle were actively exploring ways to prevent Lula from assuming office and diminish the powers of Brazil's top federal courts.

In January, a draft presidential decree, aimed at manipulating the election results, was uncovered by the police at the residence of former Justice Minister Anderson Torres.

Bolsonaro’s closest aide had plans ready for military coup in Brazil: Police

Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has visited Brazil for the first time since he was prohibited from entering in 2019 by former far-right President Jair Bolsonaro. Maduro was warmly welcomed by the new president, fellow leftist Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, ahead of a Latin American leaders' conference in Brasilia.

"What's important about Maduro coming here is that it's the beginning of Maduro's return," Lula said, as reported by the BBC.

A number of nations have questioned Maduro's legitimacy, labelling him a dictator.

Lula stated in a greeting to his visitor in the Brazilian capital on Monday (May 29) that his own comeback had arrived five months earlier, referring to the period when he reclaimed power after defeating Bolsonaro in close presidential elections.

Maduro stated that Venezuela is open to Brazilian investment and that the two nations "must be united, from now on and always."

Maduro last visited Brazil in 2015. Jair Bolsonaro was primarily opposed to Venezuela's socialist president and was unlikely to accept an invitation.

However, Lula previously had cordial relations with both Nicolás Maduro and his political mentor, the late Hugo Chávez.

Lula slammed the United States' "extremely exaggerated" sanctions against Venezuela, saying it was illogical that the US would "impose 900 sanctions because they don't get on."

He urged his South American ally to develop a new "narrative" about authoritarianism, claiming that an unfair and "constructed" one had been formed around Venezuela's status of democracy.

What does the visit mean for Maduro?

Maduro used his visit to reiterate his appeal for the US sanctions to be repealed, saying he would rally South American states to reject them as a regional bloc.

Several South American countries, including Argentina, Bolivia, and Colombia, as well as Brazil, are presently headed by left-wing politicians and may offer their support to such a viewpoint, reported The BBC.

However, it is questionable if such a demand would have any actual impact on the Biden administration's actions towards Venezuela.

Maduro now increasingly authoritarian?

Maduro has been more dictatorial since his election in 2013.

His attack on opposition activists eventually led to the US putting sanctions on his administration and recognised opposition leader Juan Guaidó as short-term president in 2019 following a contentious election.

Last December, Venezuela's opposition National Assembly decided to dissolve its parallel government and depose Guaidó.

Many Western countries, including the United States, acknowledged him, but he failed to depose the left-wing president.

The vote demonstrated how many opposition lawmakers in Venezuela had lost trust in Guaidó.

Lula welcomes back banned leader Maduro, both hit out at US sanctions against Venezuela

Brazilian police on Wednesday raided former President Jair Bolsonaro's home and arrested two personal aides as part of an investigation into falsified COVID-19 vaccination records, two sources familiar with the matter said.

Ex-Brazil President Bolsonaro's house raided, phone seized

Jair Bolsonaro, the former president of Brazil, appeared before federal police on Wednesday and categorically denied any role in the anti-government Jan 6-style riots in the Brazilian capital.

On 8 January, a week after Brazilian president Lula da Silva took office, thousands of Bolsonaro supporters attacked Congress, the Supreme Court, and the presidential palace in Brasilia.

An inquiry into Bolsonaro's suspected involvement in the January 8 rampage was launched on 13 January by Supreme Court justice Alexandre de Moraes. During the riots, protesters breached the security perimeter and stormed the government buildings.

Investigations are being conducted on the far-right Bolsonaro's suspected involvement in organising the riots.

After spending three months in the US state of Florida, Bolsonaro returned to Brazil in late March.

He was interrogated for more than two hours at the federal police headquarters in Brasilia before leaving in a car with tinted windows. He left without speaking to the media personnel present there.

However, according to Bolsonaro's spokesperson Fabio Wajngarten, who spoke to the media shortly after, former president Bolsonaro "repudiated all the unfortunate events that happened in Brasilia" on the day of the violence.

One of the reasons the probe was started was because Bolsonaro posted a video to social media two days after the riot. In the video, a prosecutor questioned the legitimacy of Lula's win.

According to Bolsonaro's attorney Paulo Bueno, the president had just been brought to the hospital and was on medication at the time he released the video. "The sharing was so accidental that he did not mention it afterwards and soon deleted it," said Bueno after the hearing.

In a contentious election in October, Lula, who previously served as president of Brazil from 2003 to 2010, narrowly secured victory over Bolsonaro.

The riots were similar to 6 January, 2021 riots that took place in Washington and was spearheaded by Bolsonaro's political hero, former President Donald Trump's supporters.

On 8 January, Bolsonaro's supporters vandalised artwork, offices, and shattered windows while demanding that the military step in to remove Lula. Nearly 1,800 people have been arrested so far, as per the AFP news agency.

To shed light on the events of January 8, Congress will establish a legislative committee of investigation.

But the riots are not controversy Bolsonaro is surrounded with. Police earlier questioned former army captain Bolsonaro on 5 April in connection with a charge that he attempted to unlawfully import jewellery given to him by Saudi Arabia worth millions of dollars. According to a source close to the former president, he disputed the charge.

Bolsonaro is the focus of at least 16 investigations. If he is found guilty, he may get a prison term or lose his right to run for office.

Brazil's former president Jair Bolsonaro has been controversial during his tenure in Brazil's highest office. Now reports that the former Brazilian president left the presidential palace in a 'wrecked' state is further damaging his image after he flew to the US days before the inauguration of Lula to avoid presence at the event after having lost the election.

A report by Brazil's GlobaNews has suggested that former Brazilian president left the presidential palace in a 'wrecked' state.

Palácio da Alvorada (Palace of Dawn), is an architectural marvel.

Bolsonaro ‘wrecked’ Brazil’s iconic presidential palace before leaving: Report

A recent analysis has shown that the number of populist leaders has fallen to a 20-year low across the world. This comes after several of them registered wins over the past year. The Tony Blair Institute analysis shows that the number of people living under populist rule has fallen by 800 million in two years.

Brazil's Jair Bolsonaro, who lost the 2022 elections is the biggest name in the list. Then there is Slovenia’s Janez Janša who was also defeated in a close election battle. Rodrigo Duterte of the Philippines could not go beyond one term in office, while in Sri Lanka, Gotabaya Rajapaksa had to flee the country following protests over the country's financial situation.

According to the report titled "Repel and Rebuild: Expanding the Playbook Against Populism", few more such populist rulers vacate the top posts in 2023. Elections are due in Turkey and Poland which could see the fall of two of the most influential populist governments in the world.

While Latin America has seen the biggest decline in populist rulers, especially with Bolsonaro's defeat, in the US, candidates backed by Donald Trump faced defeat in the November midterms recently. Trump is known for promoting rightwing nationalism and conspiracy theories and his candidates endorsed his views and failed to be elected and underperformed against moderates.

“After having defeated several moderate Republicans in swing-state primary elections, the Trump candidates then lost most of these races in November, costing the Republicans control of the Senate and several governorships. Most notably, they lost every state-level election for offices involving election administration in swing states,” the report said.

No Bolsonaro or Duterte: Number of populist leaders at a 20-year low

Less than two days before his bitter leftist challenger Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva is expected to enter office, outgoing Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro flew to Florida on Friday after giving a tearful message to his fans.

Brazil: Outgoing President Bolsonaro lands in US ahead of Lula's inauguration

Supporters of far-right Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro on Monday attempted to invade the federal police headquarters in the capital Brasilia, in a flash of post-election violence on the day the president's electoral defeat was certified.

Brazil: Cars on fire after Bolsonaro supporters clash with police

Brazil President Jair Bolsonaro finally broke his post-election silence on Friday (December 9) as he spoke to his supporters who called for a military coup against Brazil's president-elect Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

Bolsonaro said he had kept silent for almost 40 days, adding, "It hurts my soul."

"Who decides where I go are you. Who decides which way the armed forces go are you," Bolsonaro told his supporters at the gates of the presidential residence.

Though he didn't explicitly endorse his supporter's demand for a military coup, Bolsonaro said that the armed forces would respect Brazil's Constitution.

Bolsonaro has not recognised Lula's victory against him in October elections.

Lula's narrow victory over Bolsonaro will be certified by Brazil's national electoral authority on Monday.

Bolsonaro told his supporters that the armed forces were Brazil's bulwark to prevent socialism in the country, adding that "nothing is lost" and their cause would prevail one day.

"The Armed Forces are united. They owe loyalty to our people and respect to the constitution, and they are responsible for our freedom", he said.

"Unlike other people, we are going to win," he said.

Brazil: President Bolsonaro breaks post-poll silence, hails armed forces as followers call for coup

Brazil: Bolsonaro breaks post-election silence, calls for 'military coup'

The far right's attempts to invalidate Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva being elected president of Brazil were thwarted when a much-anticipated investigation from Brazil's defence ministry failed to find evidence of recent ballots being cast unlawfully.

Following weeks of speculations that it would embolden accusations by extremist president Jair Bolsonaro that the election was rigged, the military late on Wednesday delivered the 63-page report to Brazil's electoral authorities.

Bolsonaro, an ex-army captain, had hinted for months that he wouldn't accept defeat and regularly questioned the reliability of Brazil's electronic voting machines, while offering no proof to support his claims.

His followers expected the military to substantiate these allegations, but the only hint of uncertainty came in the shape of a feeble recommendation that a committee be set up to guarantee that the source code used in the voting machines cannot be altered, The Guardian said in a report.

Brazil military finds no proof of electoral fraud, dashes hopes of Bolsonaro supporters

Three days after Brazil's presidential results were announced Bolsonaro supporters have taken to the streets protesting against the loss of the right-wing leader. However, in the latest, the outgoing President has asked his supporters to clear the roads and protest somewhere else.

Lula da Silva won the presidential elections defeating the current Bolsonaro government, however, not everyone is delighted by Lula's Victory. A day after the poll results were announced, protesters have now hit the streets blocking highways to oppose the results.

Supporters block highways in Brazil, Bolsonaro remains silent amid post-poll chaos

The election of Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva as president of Brazil in the run-off on October 30 was a foregone conclusion. Equally certain, after Lula failed to defeat incumbent Jair Bolsanaro in the first round on October 2, was that it would be a cliffhanger although Lula was the odds-on favourite. In the past, too, it is in the run-off that Lula had won two terms. Therefore, it is no surprise that Lula’s margin was less than two per cent.

More surprising, and significant, than the election outcome is that in such a closely fought, high-stakes presidential battle, the voter turnout was 79 per cent. In Brazil, where voting is mandatory and non-compliance punishable with a fine, nearly 5.7 million (roughly 5 per cent) cast votes that were either blank or null; which precludes their being fined. Obviously, the prospect of a fine was not a deterrent for the 32 million (20.60 per cent) who abstained from voting.

The second significant aspect is that Lula’s victory seems to have been welcomed in most world capitals, including by leaders known to be averse, if not hostile, to the left, especially in South America. Perhaps, the red tide sweeping the continent is far too powerful for any modern-day Canute to want it rolled back; and, reality requires even the world’s anti-left leaders such as US President Joe Biden and French President Emmanuel Macron to accept the inevitable when the forces of regressive nationalism are on the rise in large parts of the world.

The leftward shift in South America began in 2020 in Bolivia; gained momentum in 2021 with right-wing politicians being worsted in presidential elections in Peru, Chile, Honduras and Nicaragua; and, continues on its winning trajectory. The first to score in 2022 was Colombia and now it is Brazil rooting for Lula and his pro-poor policies which are opposed to the ecological degradation that was rampant under Bolsanaro.

Lula’s victory is far more important than that of the left in that region. Brazil’s population, the size of its economy and its place in international bodies and multilateral forums invest the political outcome with a significance that should resonate far beyond South America.

Conventional, and dominant narratives, have presented that course of democracy as moving from the West to the rest of the world. (This “West” excludes South America). Less known and taught are that South American countries experienced their first democratic impulses in the early decades of the nineteenth century. The revival of truly inclusive and representative democracies in South America striving for equity, justice and accountability and founded on a new political language may now shape new accounts of the history of democracy.

Anachronistic accounts of history that flog the theme of the best of democracy flowing only from the West to the rest may be in for revision. At a time when the US, Europe and Asia are witnesses to the rise of backward nationalism, violent majoritarianism and neo-fascist forces, election outcomes in South America are cause for hope.

There is a message in these mandates that the 'advanced' West would do well to heed.

There is a message in these mandates that the 'advanced' West would do well to heed. You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. Share your stories and opinions with us here. WION Spotlight | Lula takes red tide in LatAm to a new high

In a Sunday election runoff, Luis Inacio Lula da Silva defeated president Jair Bolsonaro, capping a spectacular comeback for the leftist and the fall of Brazil's most right-wing administration in decades.

According to the Supreme Electoral Court, Lula received 50.9% of the vote versus Bolsonaro's 49.1 per cent, making him the victor. The installation of 77-year-old Lula is set for January 1.

The vote was a backlash to Bolsonaro's fiery far-right populism, who came from Congress' back benches to form a novel conservative coalition but lost popularity when Brazil saw one of the highest death tolls from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Bolsonaro, 67, first said nothing about the outcome despite his years of making unfounded accusations that voting fraud is rife in Brazil. According to individuals who spoke to Reuters, the electoral officials have taken security measures in case he contests the results.

Lula posted a picture of the Brazilian flag beneath his left hand along with the word "Democracy" on Twitter. He was missing his little finger due to an injury he had as a metalworker decades earlier.

Before his address, he was met by jubilant supporters at a rally on Paulista Avenue in Sao Paulo. In a video that has been making the rounds on social media, vice president-elect Geraldo Alckmin and campaign workers hopped up and down while yelling, "It's time Jair, it's time to leave already."

Messages of congratulations were sent to Lula from world leaders including French President Emmanuel Macron, American President Joe Biden, and Alberto Fernandez of Argentina.

When he was president from 2003 to 2010, Lula promised to bring back the state-driven economic growth and social policies that had helped millions of people escape poverty. He also vowed to make Brazil a leader in international climate negotiations and stop the devastation of the Amazon rainforest, which is at a 15-year high.

Following historic leftist triumphs in Colombia and Chile's elections, his victory solidifies a new "pink tide" in Latin America and echoes a regional political change that propelled Lula to international prominence 20 years ago.
