'Day of mourning': Death toll from flooding in western Europe hits 200

German government on Monday pledged to improve the nation's warning systems. The warning systems are under fire after worst floods in living memory. At least 165 people are confirmed dead now.

In the west of the country, floodwater swept away trees, cars and bridges and destroyed swathes of housing. Many victims were found in cellars after attempting to collect valuables. Others were swept away by the sheer force of floodwaters.

In Rhineland-Palatinate state, a total of 117 people are dead. In neighbouring North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) the death toll has reached 47. One person has died in Bavaria.

In Belgium, at least 31 people died due to floods.

Torrential rains have caused havoc in southern Germant and neighbouring countries.

"We haven't been to all the houses yet, we must assume that we will find more bodies," said Rhineland Palatinate's regional interior minister Roger Lewentz.

The number of people missing remains unclear, but Lewentz said authorities have been unable to reach more than a thousand in Rhineland-Palatinate, mainly because of disrupted communication networks.

The situation is similar in NRW, where police on Sunday said more than 700 residents initially unaccounted for had since been contacted, but several dozen remain missing.

Government spokeswoman Martina Fietz said the national warning system and mobile phone app Nina had "worked" but admitted that "our experiences with this disaster show that we need to do more and better".

Armin Schuster, president of the government's civil protection agency (BBK), called on German radio for sirens to be reinstated in more areas as part of the country's disaster warnings system.

Germany floods: Death toll at 165, country vows to improve flood warning system

Number of Belgian residents who have been confirmed dead has risen to 31. The devastating floods continue to affect several European countries. Authorities said they were calling an end to rescue operations.

"There is no longer an immediate danger in the affected areas," the country's crisis centre said late Sunday, adding that "rescue operations are over but search operations continue in some areas".

"Clean-up and estimating the material damage are now in focus," it added.

Sunday's toll marked an increase of four dead over the number reported Saturday, while the total for missing people rose to 163.

Police in Belgium's south and eastern regions were sent to knock on doors to check for furthur potential victims in the affected areas.

Many remain cut off from communications after losing their phone or for want of electricity to recharge batteries, while others were taken to hospital without identity papers.

Sun and warmer temperatures brightened the picture on Saturday and water levels have been falling to reveal scenes of devastation.

In the hardest-hit town of Pepinster more than 1,000 people had to be evacuated.

More than 37,000 homes were still without power and 3,600 without gas on Sunday, authorities said, while rail operator Infrabel said there was disruption to almost half of train services nationwide.

Belgium: Flood death toll rises to 31

Death toll in highly destructive and devastating floods in Germany and Belgium rose above 170 on Saturday. Burst rivers and flash floods have destroyed homes and ripped up roads and power lines.

This is proving to be Germany's worst natural disaster in more than half a century. Around 140 deaths have been recorded in Germany. Out of these, about 98 have died in Ahrweiler district south of Cologne, according to police.

Hundreds of people are missing or are unreachable since several areas were not accessible due to high water levels.

Business owners and residents struggled to pick up the pieces in battered towns.

"Everything is completely destroyed. You don't recognise the scenery," said Michael Lang, owner of a wine shop in the town of Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler in Ahrweiler, fighting back tears.

German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier visited Erftstadt in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, where the disaster killed at least 43 people.

"We mourn with those that have lost friends, acquaintances, family members," he said. "Their fate is ripping our hearts apart."

Around 700 residents were evacuated late on Friday after a dam broke in the town of Wassenberg near Cologne, authorities said.

But Wassenberg mayor Marcel Maurer said water levels had been stabilising since the night. "It's too early to give the all-clear but we are cautiously optimistic," he said.

The Steinbachtal dam in western Germany, however, remained at risk of breaching, authorities said after some 4,500 people were evacuated from homes downstream.

Steinmeier said it would take weeks before the full damage, expected to require several billions of euros in reconstruction funds, could be assessed.

At least 93 dead in Germany, Belgium floods; Merkel says her 'heart goes out' to victims

Italy's delight at reaching the Euro 2020 semi-finals with Friday's 2-1 win over Belgium was soured by a serious injury to left-back Leonardo Spinazzola who was taken off on a stretcher in the second half and is expected to be out of the tournament.

Italian media reports said AS Roma defender Spinazzola, who has been fundamental to the Azzurri's impressive run to the last four, had a suspected ruptured Achilles tendon injury, which would likely sideline him for months.

"He didn't deserve that, he has been one of the best players of this tournament and he will still be even if he can't play in the next games," Italy manager Roberto Mancini told a news conference. "We are very, very sad with what has happened it seems quite a serious one."

Spinazzola, 28, was pictured in tears on the stretcher as he left the field to be replaced by Emerson Palmieri, who is likely to take his spot for Tuesday's semi against Spain at Wembley.

Italy striker Lorenzo Insigne said the players were saddened by the injury to their teammate.

"It's a great loss, we will try to go all the way above all for him. Up to today, he has been such a key player, an influential player for us," he said.

Mancini hailed his team for another impressive performance.

"I don’t think we suffered too much in any moment of the game. To beat a team like Belgium you need a great performance by everybody and this is exactly what happened today," he said.

"We scored two and we could have scored more. I think the victory is fully deserved. Spain are next but the more you go forward the most difficult it becomes. Tonight, however, we just want to think about our performance and our victory."

Euro 2020: Leonardo Spinazzola's 'serious' injury sours Italy celebrations

Italy reached the Euro 2020 semi-finals with a thrilling 2-1 win over Belgium as first-half goals from Nicolo Barella and Lorenzo Insigne settled a gripping encounter against the number one-ranked team in the world on Friday.

Barella fired the opener after 31 minutes before Insigne’s wonderful curling strike doubled Italy's advantage on the brink of halftime.

Romelu Lukaku pulled one back for Belgium in first-half stoppage time with a penalty but neither side could find another goal and Roberto Mancini’s exciting side held on for a 13th straight win, extending their record unbeaten run to 32 games.

"I don't think we suffered too much at any moment of the game. To beat a team like Belgium, you need a great performance from everybody and that's exactly what happened today," Mancini said.

Italy will face Spain at Wembley on Tuesday for a place in the final after setting another record by winning 15 consecutive games including European Championship qualifiers and the finals.

Luis Enrique’s Spain side squeezed past Switzerland 3-1 in a penalty shootout earlier on Friday after their battling opponents clung to a 1-1 draw after extra time despite going down to 10 men.

"We didn't have a minimum goal, we wanted to do our best. The road is still long, there are two games to go, we will see what happens," Mancini said.

"Spain? Let's enjoy this victory, then we'll think about it. Congratulations to my boys, they were very good."

MORE DISAPPOINTMENT

It was another disappointment for a talented Belgium squad lauded as a 'golden generation, but who have failed to win any trophies or reach a final at a major tournament.

"I think we tried everything to win this match. They scored a fantastic goal, but the first one may have been a mistake on our part," said Belgium midfielder Kevin de Bruyne.

"They had more possession and the ball didn't go in for us, which is a shame. Getting eliminated is always a disappointment."

Italy started strongly when Leonardo Bonucci bundled the ball into the net after 13 minutes from a free-kick, but his celebrations were cut short when it was ruled out for offside.

Italy's Gianluigi Donnarumma then produced a superb one-handed save to deny De Bruyne, who was fit enough to start after picking up an injury in Belgium's last game, before the goalkeeper tipped a Lukaku effort wide.

The Azzurri went in front when Barella lashed a shot into the bottom corner of the net after holding off two defenders in the box. It was Italy’s 10th goal of the tournament, their most at a European Championship.

Italy looked set to end the half on a high when Insigne’s outstanding curler from the edge of the area doubled their lead.

But Belgium cut the deficit three minutes later when Giovanni Di Lorenzo barged over Jeremy Doku in the box and the referee pointed to the spot, much to the dismay of the Italians, before Lukaku converted from 12 yards.

Leonardo Spinazzola performed a superb goal-line clearance to deny Lukaku an equalizer after the break, but the impressive Italy left-back's night ended in tears when he was carried off on a stretcher.

"We are really sorry for the injury to Spina, he is having a great tournament, one of the best in the tournament, we are really sad about it," Mancini said.

The lively Doku caused problems for the Azzurri defense all night and threatened a late equalizer when he cut in from the wing to lash a shot at goal, but it flew inches over the bar leaving the Italians to celebrate a famous victory.

Euro 2020: Italy edge Belgium in thriller to reach Euro 2020 semis

Belgium midfielder Kevin De Bruyne said he had played in Friday's Euro 2020 quarter-final defeat by Italy with a tear in his ankle ligaments.

Manchester City's De Bruyne was a doubt for the game after picking up the injury in the last-16 win over Portugal but said he had been determined to play.

"For me personally it has been four or five weird weeks. But I especially want to thank the medical staff," he said.

"It was a miracle that I played today because there was definitely damage to my ankle. A tear in my ligaments. But I felt the responsibility to play for my country today. Too bad I couldn't do more," he added in comments on UEFA.com.

The 30-year-old De Bruyne, widely regarded as one of the top midfielders in the world, has had some bad luck with injuries and had to go off with a head injury playing for City in their Champions League final defeat by Chelsea last month.

Belgium were without their Real Madrid winger Eden Hazard through injury and De Bruyne acknowledged that fitness issues had plagued the team's bid to win the Euros.

"It was a difficult tournament for us, we suffered many injuries. We fought until the end. Italy was better than us in the first half, but in the second we created more chances. We could have got it to 2-2 but we didn't," he said.

"We lost against a top-notch team. We'll try to win next time, at the World Cup, but first I have to recover physically. I've had too many (injury) problems in the last few years but I've always tried to give everything for the team," he said.

Over 400 undocumented workers, mainly from Morocco and Algeria, are staging a mass hunger strike in Belgium to pressure authorities into granting them the right to remain in the country.

Belgium captain Eden Hazard and playmaker Kevin de Bruyne are still doubtful for their European Championship quarter-final against Italy, coach Roberto Martinez said on Thursday.

The availability of both players has Belgium on tenterhooks ahead of the match in Munich on Friday after they were forced off the pitch injured in the last-16 clash with Portugal on Sunday.

De Bruyne suffered an ankle injury while Hazard pulled a hamstring and they have not trained this week, including on Thursday morning before the team flew to Germany.

"It will be difficult for Eden to play tomorrow because of a soft tissue injury and maybe a little different for Kevin who's had a ligament problem," Martinez told a news conference.

"We know that we are fighting against time but we are going to take until the last minute to take the decision. We have seen an improvement but we’ll only see tomorrow whether they can be involved or not. Unfortunately, we cannot make a decision at the moment."

Martinez said it was a pity the two teams were meeting at this stage of the tournament.

"We are the best two teams statistically at the tournament. Two teams that have each won a record 14 games in a row in the European Championship," Martinez said of their runs in the qualifiers and the tournament itself.

"It’s a shame we have to face each other in the quarter-final. But it’s the quality of this tournament I suppose and we need to be ready for it. There are not a lot of secrets, both sides look like club teams and tomorrow’s game is going to be decided by small details."

It is also a chance for Martinez to reprise his shock success over Italy coach Robert Mancini in 2013 when he was manager of Wigan Athletic in the FA Cup final against a Manchester City side led by Mancini.

"If you put the final into context it was the England champions against a small team for whom just getting to the final was a success. I don’t think anyone expected that and since then it’s always been a story that has been stimulating and inspiring for other clubs," Martinez added.

Football: Kevin De Bruyne, Eden Hazard doubtful for Belgium’s Euro 2020 quarter-final

Italy will take on Belgium in the quarter last of Euro 2020 in Munich. The two groups have won every one of the four matches they have played so far at Euro 2020.

In this manner, it will be a mouth-watering clash between two in-structure teams. Italy, who won the competition in 1968, are unbeaten in their last 30 matches under Roberto Mancini and that is an amazing record by any norm.

Belgium, then again, are the no. 1 team as per the FIFA rankings. They took out reigning champs Portugal in their Euro 2020 Round of 16. The two teams will fancy their shots at getting a triumph and it's anything but an acutely challenging match.

Italy have a phenomenal record against Belgium and have dominated 14 matches out of an aggregate of 23 matches played between the two teams. Belgium have overseen just five triumphs against Italy and should take it's anything but a score in this match. The last gathering between the two teams occurred at Euro 2016 and finished in a 2-0 triumph for Italy.

Belgium versus Italy

Romelu Lukaku has at last satisfied hopes in a significant competition and is among the top goal scorers with three goals in Euro 2020. With 69 goals in 97 appearances, he will attempt to score another goal versus Italy.

Kevin De Bruyne would drop back a piece on occasion to play passes and make moves from the center third too. Subsequently, Jorginho would need to assume an essential part in containing Kevin De Bruyne and grabbing the ball from him in the midfield. Although, De Bruyne and Eden Hazard's involvement yet to be confirmed, Belgium are set to have the remainder of their squad available for the quarter-final.

Belgium's Probable XI: Courtois; Alderweireld, Vermaelen, Vertonghen; T. Hazard, Witsel, Tielemans, Meunier; Mertens, Lukaku, Carrasco

Italy have conceded just a single goal at Euro 2020 up until this point and their goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma was not really tried in the league stage. Belgium, then again, have scored eight goals at Euro 2020, and have probably the best attack.

Italy can flaunt their bench strength at Euro 2020, an alluring quality in competitive football. Football is a team game and Roberto Mancini has the freedom to call upon quality footballers from the bench to fill pretty much every position.

Euro 2020: Belgium and Italy bolt horns in enthralling quarterfinals

Portugal set out to defend their European Championship title with a far better squad than five years ago in France but this time they ultimately proved less adept at chasing games than grinding out results.

Fernando Santos' side bowed out of the tournament earlier than they would have liked in losing 1-0 to Belgium in the last-16 but they did not go out quietly, peppering Thibaut Courtois' goal with shots until the end and hitting the post.

Yet they lacked a cutting edge which might have disappointed fans given the assortment of world stars they had on the pitch, including Manchester United talisman Bruno Fernandes, 126-million-euro man Joao Felix and Cristiano Ronaldo.

As in their 4-2 defeat to Germany in the group stage, they were incapable of finding their way back into the game and mainly resorted to hopeful long-range efforts, only troubling Courtois a couple of times despite having 23 shots.

Critics can certainly point the finger at Santos, a reactive coach who built his reputation in international football by helping Greece punch above their weight.

After leading Portugal to their first major trophy with often cagey tactics and astute game management, his side never really took a step forward and looked uncomfortable once they were no longer the underdogs.

They also seemed to lack the unity and work rate of their predecessors, as Santos alluded to after the heavy defeat to Germany when he remarked: "That was not the Portugal we all know".

Pepe, one of the few surviving members of the Euro 2016 side, latched on to a similar theme when he said: "We need to be what we have always been, a combative team which plays with solidarity".

In the Euro 2020 group stage alone, Portugal conceded more goals than in their victorious Euro 2016 campaign.

But to be fair to Santos, his side was given a far harder draw this time around, meeting the last two world champions in France and Germany in Group F in addition to gritty Hungary.

They could only finish third and had to face Belgium, who 2018 World Cup semi-finalists and ranked number one in the world.

Their unforgiving path contrasted with 2016, when they met Iceland, Austria, and Hungary in their group and then faced Poland, Croatia and Wales in the knockout stage before riding their luck in the final to beat hosts France 1-0 in extra-time.

Their winning goal in Paris was a hit-and-hope shot from Eder and five years on in Seville, the shoe was on the other foot as Thorgan Hazard's piledriver proved the difference, ending Portugal's reign as European champions.

Many of the players who fell short here will get another chance at next year's World Cup in Qatar and Santos will hope they will be wiser from the experience and better equipped to break down teams as good as them.

Football: Early exit shows Portugal better at being hunted than hunter

Portugal have no plans to man-mark Belgium playmaker Kevin de Bruyne as it would merely play into the hands of their multi-talented side, midfielder Joao Moutinho has said ahead of Sunday's Euro 2020 last 16 tie.

De Bruyne has only played 135 minutes at the tournament but has one goal and two assists, inspiring Belgium to a 2-1 comeback over Denmark and playing a pivotal role in the 2-0 win over Finland.

Moutinho said his team would have to work hard to keep De Bruyne at bay but would be better off coming up with a plan to deprive Belgium space overall.

"If he has space to play he's even more dangerous. But if they all have space, all of them will be able to play their game more calmly and that will make our job even more difficult," he told a news conference on Saturday.

"Kevin is very competent, we have to watch him closely but not just focus on one player. That would set the others free and that would be even worse. As a team we will try to minimize their strengths and make the most of ours."

Coach Fernando Santos also ruled out targeting individuals.

"It's not about pulling one of our players over to talk about player A, B or C because we have to focus on what we have to do as a team," he said.

"We can't afford to concede them any space, because of how much quality they have in midfield and attack. The team that defends the best, who knows how to manage the ball better and create opportunities, will win the game."

Portugal, who came third in Group F with four points, have two days less to prepare for the game than Belgium, who pulled off a clean sweep of victories to top Group B.

But Moutinho dismissed suggestions that would work against his side. "We can't give it too much importance. They'll have two more days than us but we will have had four to get to the game," he said.

"It happened to us at Euro 2016 and we still managed to recover well. We just have to make sure we rest and train well and are at 100%."

Euro 2020: Portugal won't man-mark Belgium's danger man Kevin De Bruyne, says Joao Moutinho

Belgium coach Roberto Martinez said on Saturday (June 26) that their last-16 Euro 2020 showdown against holders Portugal would depend on the first goal.

"I think in those sort of games there is always depending on the first goal," he told reporters at a news conference.

"We all know that Portugal are a group of phenomenal individuals [...] and a real threat on the counter-attack."

"When you see the two types of teams that we will have on the pitch will it will depend a lot on how the first goal goes in and how the game develops at that point," he stated.

Belgium last played such an important tie three years ago when they were beaten by France in the World Cup semi-finals.

Asked about striker Cristiano Ronaldo, defender Jan Vertonghen said they had respect for him but said his team was ready to play the tournament holders.

"He's the biggest player in the history of Portugal," he said.

"But tomorrow it is not Belgium against Ronaldo, it is Belgium against Portugal. And they have a lot of good players, a lot of of quality players and we do as well. So we will be ready," he said.

Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo is one goal away from setting a new record for most national team goals, while Belgium's Romelu Lukaku is Belgium's top scorer with 63 in 96 international appearances.

The comparison with the two has dominated the build-up to the last-16 clash between holders Portugal and top-ranked Belgium, in what could be the clash of the round.

Football: Game against Portugal will depend on the first goal, says Roberto Martinez

Belgium's Romelu Lukaku believes he should be classified now as a world-class striker and says everything fell into place for him in the season just finished, as he looks ahead to meeting Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal in the European Championship on Sunday.

Ronaldo is one goal away from setting a new record for most national team goals, while Lukaku is Belgium’s top scorer with 63 in 96 international appearances.

"At his age, he continues to shine and I'm going to try and get as close to his achievements as possible," Lukaku said of his Portuguese rival, who he added was a major source of inspiration and motivation.

"Oh, I need competition. When someone says he's better than me, I want to transcend him. Ronaldo wants to be the best at everything, Kylian Mbappe also wants to win everything," Lukaku told reporters.

"I've taken a big step. Robert Lewandowski, Karim Benzema, and Harry Kane used to be talked about as world-class strikers. For me, those sort of comment was always limited to: 'He is in shape'. Well, now I'm world-class, too. That was my personal goal.

"It was important to start winning trophies, and the Serie A title with Inter gave me motivation and now I also want to win with the Red Devils. It would be the ultimate recognition for this team. If I play badly I will be really disappointed in myself and the team, because now is the right time to harvest."

Belgium’s golden generation has been top of the FIFA rankings for almost three years but is without a major tournament triumph, losing in the semi-finals of Russia 2018 to France three years ago.

"We were not mature enough at the World Cup against France. We tried too hard to do well and were beaten. Now we know how to win in many different kinds of ways.”

In a separate Saturday interview on Belgian television, Lukaku said success at Euro 2020 would cap a dream season.

"Everything has finally fallen into place this season. I have worked very hard in recent years and worked under the right coach at the right time. I analyzed myself a lot, and that really made a difference in playing better," he added.

Football: Romelu Lukaku says he is world class striker but still chasing Cristiano Ronaldo

Top-ranked Belgium and their golden generation face an early reckoning at the European Championship against determined holders Portugal, who clawed their way into the last 16 to set up the potential match of the round on Sunday.

The contrast in progress could not have been greater with Belgium masterfully overcoming adversity to win all their group games, while a pugnacious Portugal saw their fortunes ebb and flow before they finished third in their section after holding world champions France to a 2-2 draw on Wednesday.

An extra day of rest was Belgium's reward for topping Group B, having seen the talismanic trio of Kevin De Bruyne, Eden Hazard, and Axel Witsel all return from injury after it looked as if the heart of the team had been torn out on the eve of the tournament, threatening to scupper their strong chances.

The influence of the trio was clearly displayed when they came on after a torrid first half in Belgium’s second group against Denmark, neutralizing the emotion-fueled hosts and turning a halftime deficit into a 2-1 win in Copenhagen.

That allowed Roberto Martinez to rest players in the 2-0 win over Finland on Monday in a textbook tournament scenario.

But whether it turns out to be the ideal recipe for success in the knockout phase remains to be seen. It could be counterargued that Portugal is better prepared, having had to scrap against the likes of Germany, who beat them 4-2, and France.

SIMPLER FORMULA

Portugal coach Fernando Santos offered a simpler formula.

“These matches are all like finals now and if you don’t play well, you don’t win,” he told reporters.

“In league competitions, you can play badly and still win but here at this tournament, at this stage, if you don’t play well, you’ll lose... every time.”

Portugal has their own talisman in Cristiano Ronaldo, who needs one more goal to become the all-time top scorer in international soccer.

“He is in the form of his life,” said Belgium defender Toby Alderweireld, “but as a team, we can stop him. That has always been our strength.”

“But they will be difficult, they are a real tournament team,” he added.

The juxtaposition between the match-winning capabilities of Ronaldo and Belgium’s own prolific marksman Romelu Lukaku adds intrigue to the game at La Cartuja stadium

With 63 goals for his country, Lukaku, who is eight years younger than Ronaldo, might one day challenge the Portugal captain’s record.

ALSO READ: Football: Alvaro Morata reveals social media abuse, threats to family The influence of the trio was clearly displayed when they came on after a torrid first half in Belgium’s second group against Denmark, neutralizing the emotion-fueled hosts and turning a halftime deficit into a 2-1 win in Copenhagen. SIMPLER FORMULA Portugal coach Fernando Santos offered a simpler formula. “These matches are all like finals now and if you don’t play well, you don’t win,” he told reporters. “In league competitions, you can play badly and still win but here at this tournament, at this stage, if you don’t play well, you’ll lose... every time.” Portugal has their own talisman in Cristiano Ronaldo, who needs one more goal to become the all-time top scorer in international soccer. “He is in the form of his life,” said Belgium defender Toby Alderweireld, “but as a team, we can stop him. That has always been our strength.” “But they will be difficult, they are a real tournament team,” he added. Football: Early reckoning for top-ranked Belgium against title holders Portugal

A 35-day manhunt in Belgium that involved helicopters, armored vehicles, 400 soldiers and police officers, as well as reinforcements from Germany and the Netherlands, culminated Sunday in the discovery of a body believed to be that of a missing soldier with links to the far right.

The body was found in a forest where the soldier, Jürgen Conings, 46, disappeared more than a month ago after threatening the government and virologists responsible for the country’s response to the coronavirus, the federal prosecutor said. At the time, the soldier was armed with four rocket launchers, a submachine gun and a semi-automatic pistol that he had taken from an army depot.

The prosecutor said an initial investigation indicated the body belonged to Conings, a shooting instructor who in February was classified as a high-level threat to national security. He appears to have shot himself, authorities said.

In a letter to his girlfriend around the time he disappeared on May 17, Conings wrote that he would not give up without a fight.

“The so-called political elite and now virologists decide how you and I should live,” he wrote. The virologists and the government “have taken everything away from us,” he said. “I don’t care if I die or not.”

The soldier’s disappearance came at a time of frustration in Belgium over pandemic restrictions and the economic damage from them. The country has had a relatively large number of COVID-19 deaths per capita and has imposed one of the longest lockdowns in Europe.

The far-right camp in Belgium has used the pandemic to inflame public anger at the government. Reports from state security agencies warned as early as last spring of “the emergence of various right-wing extremist individuals and groups spreading conspiracy theories” about COVID-19.

Conings’ links to far-right extremists were under investigation by the federal prosecutor.

Before the soldier disappeared, he went to the house of Marc Van Ranst, a top virologist active in Belgium’s COVID-19 response, and waited outside for him to return home from work. But Van Ranst had taken his first afternoon off in 16 months and was already home.

It was not the first time Conings had threatened Van Ranst, a well-known public health figure in Belgium. Van Ranst had also drawn the ire of the far right for speaking out against racism and xenophobia.

After the soldier went missing, Belgian authorities placed Van Ranst and his family in a safe location. When the body was discovered Sunday, Van Ranst, who was celebrating his 56th birthday in hiding, told the local news media that he hoped to “get back to normal life soon.”

Although he said he had little sympathy for Conings, he expressed condolences to the soldier’s family.

Conings joined the military at 18. But after making racist comments and threats, he lost his security clearance last year and was demoted, Belgian authorities said.

Even though the security services listed the soldier as a “potentially dangerous extremist,” Belgium’s defense minister said in a parliamentary hearing that Conings had an access card to an ammunition depot after his demotion.

Belgium is divided linguistically and politically between the wealthy Dutch-speaking region of Flanders in the north and the poorer French-speaking Wallonia in the south. Each has its own government and political landscape, and centrist politicians face pressure from the far left and the far right.

The challenge is particularly prominent in Flanders, which is home to Conings and Van Ranst as well as two right-wing parties. One of them, Vlaams Belang, a Flemish ultranationalist, anti-immigration party, has gained significant support in recent years.

After Conings’ disappearance, 45,000 people joined a Facebook group called “All united behind Jürgen,” before Facebook blocked it. On Telegram, the encrypted messaging app, about 3,300 users have been exchanging messages of solidarity in a group called “As one man behind Jürgen!”

But when the Facebook group called for demonstrations in support of Conings near his hometown a week later, only about 350 people turned up.

The long, unsuccessful manhunt had become the source of bitter jokes in a country roughly the size of the state of Maryland. Last week, police discovered a backpack containing ammunition they believe belonged to Conings.

“That place had been searched before, but the backpack was possibly overlooked then,” the federal prosecutor’s office told local media.

Russia will look to turn the page and forget about a stinging 3-0 loss to Belgium in a tepid performance on home turf, manager Stanislav Cherchesov said after Saturday's match.

Russia face long odds to progress from Group B, with inexperienced goalkeeper Anton Shunin and a lack of depth that often renders the team powerless against strong opposition.

"We are still in the tournament," Cherchesov told reporters "We chose our system, which worked partially but then started to break down. The Belgians scored and then it was difficult to get the ball off them."

Cherchesov said his players were demoralised by Romelu Lukaku's early goal and struggled to regain their composure.

"We would have wanted a better match, both in terms of result and performance," he said.

Despite missing midfield talisman Kevin De Bruyne, Belgium's attack toyed with Russia in a match that highlighted a big gap in quality between the two sides.

Confusion and sloppiness prevailed in Russia's defence, which collapsed under pressure from Belgium's forays as Thomas Meunier and Lukaku added further goals.

Russia's defeat coincided with a public holiday, souring the mood at the start of a three-day weekend.

Cherchesov said Russia needed to regroup before Wednesday's match against Finland, the surprise qualifiers who beat Denmark 1-0 playing in their first major tournament.

Euro 2020: Russia look to turn page after Belgium rout, says manager

Coach Zlatko Dalic was confident Croatia would make an impact at Euro 2020 despite a lackluster performance in Sunday's 1-0 defeat by Belgium in their final warm-up for the June 11-July 11 tournaments featuring 24 nations.

The Croatians have recently looked a pale shadow of the side that finished runners-up at the 2018 World Cup and following a 1-1 home draw with Armenia on Tuesday, they were fortunate not to concede more goals against Belgium.

Dalic was nevertheless adamant that his side would be ready for their opening Group D clash with England at Wembley on Sunday.

"I am sure the English will be very aggressive from the start and we have to keep them at bay," Dalic told Croatia's Nova television after Romelu Lukaku gave the Belgians victory with his 60th international goal.

"We played a good match and held our own. We didn't create enough chances but we've made progress as the side looked much more compact than they did in recent games. The performance is encouraging."

Belgium missed a string of chances to win by a bigger margin as Lukaku and Yannick Carrasco hit the woodwork while Croatia keeper Dominik Livakovic pulled off several fine saves.

Dalic acknowledged the Croatians still had work to do in order to be on top of their game against England.

"We need more vertical passes, shots on goal, and players making runs into the penalty area," he said.

"There were segments I didn't like against Belgium but I'll keep that for the locker room and sort it out with the players."

Croatia also faces the Czech Republic at Hampden Park on June 18 and takes on Scotland at the same venue four days later.

Belgium coach Roberto Martinez shrugged off a disappointing home draw with Greece in Thursday’s friendly international as the after-effects of a long season for his players.

The top-ranked Belgians, one of the favourites for the European Championship that kicks off next week, produced a laboured display in a 1-1 stalemate in Brussels with their visitors, who did not qualify for the tournament.

“We need to be disappointed because anything we do is aimed at winning but we need to also measure the benefits we took, away from the scoreline,” Martinez said in his analysis of the performance in the first of two warm-up internationals for the Belgians.

“We need to get our competitive intensity back; I don’t think we had that competitive nature we usually have. It happens after finishing a really demanding season. You have a release after a long club season and now it takes time to activate again.”

Martinez said game time would iron out the wrinkles and he would look for improvement when Belgium host Croatia in their next warm-up in Brussels on Sunday.

“These are things we cannot sort out in training, which you need to see against an opponent, so I’m glad we had an opponent like Greece because they are competitive in any game they play. We showed we didn’t have the same intensity to defend dead ball situations.

“But I’m glad we had no injuries and we got a lot of players out onto the pitch who got an opportunity to move towards their best level,” he added

Belgium did rest several regulars and after going up when Thorgan Hazard scored in the 20th minute, dominated play as they suggested they would go on and post a comfortable win.

But they allowed the Greeks to fight back in a feisty second half and, in the end, the draw seemed an appropriate outcome.

Belgium's cafe terraces will not re-open to thirsty beer drinkers for another week but the country's renowned brewers are already all hands to the pump.

Six months after the country went into a second coronavirus lockdown, proud bar owners and beer makers alike are keen to get back to business.

They are confident their countrymen and women have not lost their taste for Belgium's world-famous brews, but the task of getting new barrels into cellars is huge.

And -- with interior service still banned and social distancing in place -- time is running out for some in an industry that has already been hit hard by the pandemic.

"It's a whole machine that needs to be put back on the road," explains Lionel Van Der Haegen, director of the Silly brewery, in the Belgian village of the same name.

The brewery is working hard, but Van Der Haegen fears for the bars that take his beer. "Some have gone bankrupt," he told AFP. "Every day counts. We need to reopen as soon as possible."

Halting Belgium's draft beer cycle in October was a massive logistical exercise it its own right.

In normal times, heavy beer barrels are rolled into bar cellars full and pulled back out when they are empty and hence much lighter.

But after bars were ordered closed at the end of last October, stocks of beer meant to last for several weeks had to be laboriously hauled up and sent back.

Belgium's beer culture is recognised by UNESCO as a heritage of international standing and there was no question for Silly, which prides itself on freshness, of simply storing stale beer.

The unsold beers were disposed of carefully, and now an entirely new batch is under production ahead of May 8, Belgium's reopening day.

"It takes between a month and six weeks between the start of brewing and tasting a Silly beer," said Van Der Haegen, showing AFP around his busy plant.

The Silly brewery dominates the village of just over 7,000. In normal times it produces two-and-a-half million litres per year -- pale ales, saison, abbey beers, fruit beers, Pilseners, wheat beers and Scotch ale.

As AFP toured the plant a local farmer pulled up in a tractor to collect a trailer-load of distillers grains -- dried barley mash left over by the brewing process -- to feed his livestock.

The brewery has been in operation since 1850, employs 24 people at full strength, supplies bars across the region and exports bottled beer as far as the United States and China.

But it's at 70 percent capacity now, and Van Der Haegen does not know how fast things will pick up.

"We're prepared for it, we're building up stock, and we're calling in the teams to set up logistics and prepare orders, call clients, plan deliveries," the director said.

The reopening will be a relief for beer drinkers, as well as bar owners and brewers, but much uncertainty remains. To begin with, bars and restaurants will only open as outdoor terraces.

There will be pent-up demand and some drinkers will doubtless want to celebrate liberally -- but others may be nervous of crowds as the pandemic continues.

A rebellious mood is building. Venues in the city of Liege threatened to break lockdown early, and police with water cannons and horses had to break up a mass gathering in a Brussels park.

But bar managers like Sebastien Weverbergh, who runs an independent cafe adjoining the Silly brewery, argue that no-one is better placed than they are to manage a safe return to normal service.

The industry has experience of installing hygiene measures and dealing with exuberant customers, he said, and Belgium needs to get back to the pub.

"Not seeing our clients is a bit like being punished, as if we no longer had the right to see the people who in the end become our friends in this profession," he said.

"The other difficulty is obviously financial. The state has helped us, it has done what it could, but its means are sometimes a little derisory compared to the costs that a restaurant or a cafe generates."

Belgium has decided to slash value-added tax from 21 percent to six to support the reopening, setting aside 835 million euros ($1.0 billion) to put some fizz back into the sector.

But bar owners argue that European countries could do more and the industry is pushing the idea of bar reopenings as a motor for post-virus recovery.

"I think it is a symbol of the start of the recovery from Covid, for the whole of society," said Simon Spillane, director of communications for the association Brewers of Europe.

"And yes, we're hoping for a boom."

Before the crisis there were 11,000 breweries in Europe, and the number was surging by almost 1,000 per year as the fashion for small-scale specialists spread.

But the industry is at 50 percent capacity across the continent, sales in bars and restaurants dropped by 42 percent in 2020 compared to 2019, and increased shop sales did not fill the gap.

"When you're having a beer on a terrace with your friends, you're not just supporting the brewers," Spillane says. "You're supporting people's jobs and you're supporting the whole economy and the recovery of European society."

Also read: Hong Kong to reopen bars, nightclubs from April 29 for vaccinated customers And -- with interior service still banned and social distancing in place -- time is running out for some in an industry that has already been hit hard by the pandemic. We need to reopen as soon as possible." Halting Belgium's draft beer cycle in October was a massive logistical exercise it its own right.
