Ever had a project-mate who, after joining the group, vanished suspiciously as the work actually started, and mysteriously materialised when it was time to show result to the seniors? Well he/ she may get part of the official acclaim but in informal parties, the person would never get invited.

Apparently, such a tendency to sneakily claim the prize is found even among animals.

A video shot in Yellowstone National Park in the USA has captured a fun encounter between a bear and a pack of wolves. In this video, the wolves can be seen to focus their attention on a group of elk and give a fierce chase to score a kill.

Not too far from the wolf pack is a bear, clearly distinct by its portly figure in the video. It may lack the aerodynamic, physical ferocity of the wolves but its hulking figure sure packs a punch. The bear appears so close to the wolf pack that it appears it's taking part in the hunt.

But it's wolves who score the kill. A meal well-deserved.

In comes the bear, steals the elk carcass and runs away. Check out the video

Bears look cute but they are ferocious predators. With their sharp claws and speed, they earn their place in the list of apex land predators. But would you imagine a goat defeating this giant killing machine? Something of this sort has happened.

Forensic necropsy of a dead female bear in Canada has revealed that it was killed by a mountain goat. Those carrying out the necropsy said that the bear was found to have deep wounds on its neck and armpits. Parks Canada says that this suggests that the bear was likely killed by a mountain goat that used its sharp horns to change outcome of what could possibly have been fatal encounter for itself and not the bear.

The remains of the bear were found on Burgess Pass trail near Field, British Columbia The bear was most likely trying to hunt the mountain goat.

When bears attack, they focus on head, back of the neck and shoulders of its prey. Effectively, the attack comes from above for the prey.

The defensive response of the mountain goat must have been to jab the bear with its sharp horns. But a Parks Canada ecologist said that a mountain goat killing a bear this way has never been documented before.

One of the many Republican candidates vying to replace the governor of California in an upcoming vote caused a stir on Tuesday by bringing a bear to his political rally.

John Cox is campaigning on the theme of 'beauty and the beast', the ‘beauty' being current Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom, known for his polished appearance in the state that is home to Hollywood.

Cox has cast himself as the 'beast', who will shake up politics in the most populous US state, where a brown bear features prominently on its flag.

"The beautiful politicians have failed California," Cox said during a rally in Sacramento, the state capital. "We need big, beastly changes to save it. I'll cut taxes, make California more affordable and shake up Sacramento."

For a publicity stunt, Cox brought a Kodiak bear, considered the largest ursine species, to his rally.

The bear, named "Tag," weighs about 1,100 pounds (500 kg) and was born in captivity and trained to appear in films and television series.

Tag displayed a locally appropriate laid-back attitude on Tuesday, content to wait patiently for the end of Cox's speech, munching on snacks given by his trainer or grooming himself with his tongue.

But the use of a bear for political and publicity purposes caused an outcry among animal rights advocates, such as PETA, who said it was "unfortunate and shameful that Tag the Kodiak bear has been exploited in this way."

"Bears need to be left alone, not confined to an open pen on asphalt and wheeled out for events," the NGO said on Twitter, urging "anyone with an ounce of decency to keep wild animals out of their publicity stunts."

A Republican-backed effort to recall Newsom, fueled by his handling of the coronavirus pandemic, has forced a special election that is set to be held later this year.

California allows voters to hold a referendum on replacing its governor if they can gather the signatures of 12 per cent of previous voters, which the campaign succeeded in doing.
