Big Bash League 2022: Know full schedule, squad, broadcast TV channels and live streaming-OTT in your country

Former India captain Kapil Dev has urged the ICC to protect ODI and Test cricket amid the growing popularity of T20 cricket and the mushrooming of T20 leagues across the globe. Several top franchise leagues have mushroomed in major cricketing nations over the last few years as T20 cricket continues to gain major eyeballs.

The 1983 World Cup-winning captain believes cricket is going the football way in promoting franchise cricket over international cricket. The legendary all-rounder believes playing for the country should still be the priority for the players and the T20 leagues should not damage the reputation of traditional formats like Test and ODI.

The future of ODIs has become a topic of huge debate after England all-rounder Ben Stokes recently announced his retirement from the fifty-over format. Several former cricketers believe ODIs should either be scrapped or changes should be brought to revitalise the format.

Many also believe ICC should reduce the amount of bilateral cricket the teams are playing in order to ensure the payers can manage their workload in a better way. After Stokes, New Zealand pacer Trent Boult recently pulled out of the country's central contract to reduce the amount of international cricket he will be playing going forward.

Meanwhile, IPL is all set to be getting a bigger window from next year while England and Australia will also have dedicated windows for The Hundred and the Big Bash League. UAE and South Africa will also launch their own T20 leagues further cramping the cricket calendar.

Amid the rising popularity of franchise cricket, Kapil questioned if the players will only play the World Cup once every four years and then continue playing franchise cricket around the globe. The former India captain wants ICC to ensure the future of Tests and ODIs is safe.

"It's going the way as football in Europe. Is this what we're going to have, the World Cup and the rest of the time playing club (T20 franchise) cricket? In a similar way, will cricketers eventually be playing mainly the IPL or the Big Bash or something like that," Kapil told the Sydney Morning Herald.

"The ICC have to put more time into that to see how they can ensure the survival of one-day cricket, test match cricket, not only club cricket," Kapil added.

While there are concerns about the future of ODIs, ICC has assured there will be no reduction in the amount of ODI cricket in the annual calendar going forward. The ICC has already scheduled three ODI World Cups in the next nine years with the 2023 edition set to take place in India next year.

Melbourne Stars pacer Haris Rauf pulled off a unique celebration after taking a wicket in his side's clash against Perth Scorchers in the Big Bash League on Tuesday. Rauf, who is known for his quirky celebrations after taking a wicket, sent a message with his unique COVID-19-related celebration this time around.

As COVID-19 wreaks havoc across the globe once again, COVID-appropriate behaviour has become the new norm in the world. While social distancing is crucial, healthy habits like wearing a mask and washing hands regularly with soap are among the guidelines that have been laid out by medical experts to stay protected from the contagious virus.

Rauf sent a message to cricket fans around the world by gesturing washing his hands and wearing a mask after taking a wicket. The incident happened in the third over of the Perth Scorchers' innings when opener Kurtis Patterson was dismissed by the Pakistan pacer after getting caught behind.

Rauf gestured pouring out hand wash and washing his hands before taking out a mask from his pocket and wearing it in what was a unique way of celebrating the wicket. His teammate Beau Webster was also left amused by the celebration as he laughed and clapped while appreciating Rauf.

Brett Lee believes Australia should permit private proprietors to have a part in Big Bash League, the country's Twenty20 cricket tournament, which will be launched on a Sunday the following summer by the three-peat chasing Sydney Sixers.

The Sydney Sixers have won the last two Big Bash titles and their mission for a third sequential title will begin against the Melbourne Stars on December 5, falling between the Test against Afghanistan in Hobart and the first Ashes Test.

Brett Lee has called for more private ownership in the Big Bash League to help it arrive at a higher level and include major overseas players. Brett Lee referred to the chance of Indian skipper Virat Kohli playing for the Sydney Sixers, saying it would work on the scope of the game in the country.

“You could have co-ownership and Cricket Australia could retain 51% and still control things, but with that extra funding I think you could get some really high profile stars to come out,’’ he said

“I am talking about the Virat Kohli’s. Imagine Kohli playing for the Sixers and the crowds you would get. I am really impressed with the Big Bash. They have done a great job. But to reach the next level that is what you would have to do," he added.

Cricket Australia is likewise in talks to prepare for an overseas draft for next season. Nonetheless, it stays dependent upon the pandemic in the country. Brett Lee trusts the draft will be a positive development since Australia and the BBL have acquired it to have the world's best players.

“The draft is a good idea and I would love to see the best of the best come to Australia. We have earned that right. You need those big overseas players. The IPL has done well with only four overseas players so you are seeing the best of the best youngsters, but I think it really helps to mix with top overseas players,’’ he said.

The entire schedule of the BBL is underway and should be announced soon. Most of the Aussie stars are probably going to be available for the total season, which will go on till February.

Australian all-rounder Moises Henriques recently led his team Sydney Sixers to a title win in Big Bash League (BBL) and said that he was looking to do the same with Punjab Kings' KL Rahul.

“Just because you're the captain, it doesn't mean you run the show. I had 10 other very good players, very good leaders out there helping me,” the Punjab Kings website quoted Henriques as saying.

“And now I'll be trying to do the same for KL (Rahul), whether it be while playing or watching the game. It is about trying to make the team get better from wherever I may be,” he added.

Henriques felt that good fielding is vital for a team and could switch it in their favour.

“I think fielding is a huge part of the game that doesn't get the praise and the acknowledgement it deserves. A lot of the best teams I've played with have had really good fielding setups,” said Henriques.

“If you can constantly save 5-10 runs in the field whilst the other teams are probably losing a few runs on the field everytime. If you take that half catch or the odd run-out chance, you do it multiple times in a season and it will probably get you two or three extra wins through the course of a season,” explained the 34-year-old.

Punjab Kings' will open their Indian Premier League 2021 campaign with Rajashtan Royals on April 12 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

IPL 2021- 'I'll try to do same': BBL winning skipper on repeating same feat under KL Rahul

Sydney Sixers put up an enthralling performance with both bat and ball against Melbourne Renegades to pull off the "biggest victory" in the Big Bash League (BBL) history. The team secured a 145-run win over their opponents here on Sunday.

Josh Philippe led the charge with the bat, breaking his own record for the highest BBL score by a Sixers player during a scintillating knock of 95 off 57 balls, which included nine fours and three sixes.

Big Bash League (BBL) franchises are looking to rope in the Indian trio of MS Dhoni, Suresh Raina and Yuvraj Singh. All three of Dhoni, Raina and Yuvraj have retired from international cricket with the former two still participating in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020.

With BBL allowing three foreign players per team, all the franchises are eyeing Dhoni, Raina and Yuvraj to not only bolster their squads but also to gain massive popularity in India. However, they will have to get NOC from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) first.

According to a report in cricket.com.au, BBL is keen on adding some Indian firepower to their arsenal with Dhoni, Raina and Yuvraj leading the pecking order.

The BCCI has clearly stated that it won’t allow their players to play in foreign leagues due to the exclusivity factor in IPL and domestic competitions. However, few players like Yuvraj, Manpreet Gony, Pravin Tambe among others have participated in overseas leagues after retiring from the BCCI. They are no more allowed to take part in Indian domestic tournaments including the IPL.

Notably, all three of Dhoni, Raina and Yuvraj will be free when BBL 2020-21 kicks off in December. Interestingly, in December 2016, Dhoni had said that he will see how the future goes after retirement as the quality of BBL demands a lot of physical fitness.

“We are quite focused on international cricket for now so I can’t really make any comment on that [BBL future]. We’ll see how the future goes. It depends on when I retire and whether I’m in a position to play international cricket. The Big Bash, the quality of cricket is high so a lot depends on the physical fitness and the will to carry on and play more cricket,” the Ranchi superstar had said.
