<p>Spencer has accused "Panorama" programme reporter, who conducted the interview, Martin Bashir of showing him fake documents to urge his sister to participate in the interview.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In the bombshell interview, viewed by a record of 22.8 million people, Diana talked in detail about her collapsing marriage with Prince Charles.&nbsp;</p>

<p>She said "there were three people" in her marriage, Charles, his long-time lover Camilla Parker-Bowles and she herself, and also revealed she had been unfaithful.</p>

<p>In 1996, Diana and Charles formally divorced and after a year the princess died in a car crash in Paris.&nbsp;</p>

<p>New reports have claimed that Bashir used underhand methods to persuade the late princess for the interview.</p>

<p>"This is an important investigation which I will start straight away," the former Supreme Court judge said in a statement, as quoted by news agency AFP.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"I will ensure it is both thorough and fair."</p>

<p>The BBC said on Wednesday it will axe 450 jobs from its news division in a cost-saving plan that will result in cuts at the World Service and its 5Live radio station and in fewer reports being made by analysis show Newsnight.</p>

<p>The corporation said it would reorganize its newsroom along a "story-led" model where staff will be assigned to stories and not attached to individual programmes.</p>

<p>BBC News said it currently employs around 6,000 people, including 1,700 outside the UK, but declined to specify how many are journalists.</p>

<p>"We need to reshape BBC News for the next decade in a way which saves substantial amounts of money," said Fran Unsworth, Director of News and Current Affairs.</p>

<p>"We are spending too much of our resources on traditional linear broadcasting and not enough on digital," she added in a statement.</p>

<p>The BBC said the cuts, along with others already implemented, would enable it to meet a&nbsp;$105 million&nbsp;savings target by 2022.</p>

<p>The BBC said it remained Britain's most trusted and consumed news service but needed to cater for changing behaviour, such as declining audiences for scheduled news programmes.</p>

<p>The changes will mean a reduction in the overall number of stories covered, it said, but it would invest more in digital news, including a new version of the BBC News app.</p>

<p>"Whilst most discussion in the media has focused on 'fake news' in the West, this piece of research gives strong evidence that a serious set of problems are emerging in the rest of the world where the idea of nation-building is trumping the truth when it comes to sharing stories on social media," said Jamie Angus, Director, BBC World Service Group.</p>

<p>As part of the extensive research using big data and analytics, the BBC found that in Indian Twitter networks, known right wing sources of fake news seemed more closely aligned than left wing sources.</p>

<p>"This allows right leaning fake news to spread faster and wider than left leaning fake news," notes the extensive research carried out by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) in the three countries.</p>

<p>The research forms part of the BBC Beyond Fake News project, a new international anti-disinformation initiative of programmes and discussions, which launches this week.</p>

<p>The research revealed that fake news was being unwittingly spread by people across India, Kenya, and Nigeria as they forward messages in the hope that someone else will check the truth of the story for them.</p>

<p>"In India people are reluctant to share messages which they think might incite violence, but feel duty bound to share nationalistic messages," the research notes.</p>

<p>"Fake news stories about India's progress, Hindu power and revival of lost Hindu glory are being shared widely without any attempt at fact-checking. In sharing these messages, people feel like they are nation building," it adds.</p>

<p>Whilst nationalism is driving the spread of fake news in India, the research tells a different story in Kenya and Nigeria.</p>

<p>There, fake news stories that get shared largely reflect national anxieties and aspirations, with scams related to money and technology contributing to an estimated third of fake news stories in WhatsApp conversations in Kenya.<br />
In Nigeria, stories relating to terrorism and the army are also widely shared within WhatsApp.</p>

<p>The latest research is part of the BBC's wider Beyond Fake News initiative, which has been described as a decisive step in its commitment to tackling the spread of disinformation, and the research provides "invaluable insights to aid this work".</p>

<p>"At the heart of this research is the question of why ordinary people are sharing fake news, even while they claim to be worried about the way fake stories spread.<br />
"This report combines in-depth qualitative and ethnographic techniques with digital network analysis and big data techniques to explore the fake news phenomenon in India, Kenya, and Nigeria from multiple angles," said Santanu Chakrabarti, Head of Audience Research, BBC World Service.</p>

<p>Chakrabarti said the project was one of the first in these countries to properly understand fake news as a technologically driven social phenomenon.</p>

<p>As part of a generational analysis, it reveals that young people are identifying along nationalistic lines, and this is driving their sharing behaviour as much as it is the older generation.</p>

<p>The research suggests that a significant amount of fake stories being shared are not written articles, but images and memes.</p>

<p>The report explains in depth how the nature of social media platforms, combined with the challenge people face in coping with the amount of information online, leads to the spread of fake news being carried through visual media.</p>

<p>The report comes on the same day when social media giants like Facebook, Google and Twitter are to appear together to talk about the impact of fake news on their platforms.</p>

Nationalism behind spread of fake news in India: BBC report

<p>India may have the largest film industry in the world, but in a list of 100 best foreign language films of 21st century curated by the BBC, it has only managed to feature once. Satyajit Ray’s classic ‘Pather Panchali’ is the only India film that features in the long list which has films by Bergman, Kurosawa and Kiarostami.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Over 200 critics from 43 countries took part in the poll and Akira Kurosawa’s cult classic ‘Seven Samurai’ was adjudged as the number one film in the list.<br />

The poll featured 100 films from 67 different directors, from 24 countries, and in 19 languages. “27 of the highest-rated films were in French, followed by 12 in Mandarin, and 11 each in Italian and Japanese,” states BBC.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The only Indian film, Ray’s Pather Panchali, released in 1955 and is placed at number 15 on the list.</p>

<p>While a quarter of the films listed were from East Asia, it had a very poor representation of women directors on the list. Of the 100 films listed, only four films had women directors. Though, BBC noted, that 45% of those who responded to the poll were women.&nbsp;</p>

Ray’s 'Pather Panchali' the only Indian film to feature in 100 best foreign language films list

<p>Britain on Sunday said Saudi Arabia's account of the death of dissident journalist Jamal Khashoggi inside its Istanbul consulate was not credible and the culprits must be "held to account".</p>

<p>After a fortnight of denials, Saudi authorities admitted Saturday that the Washington Post columnist, a prominent critic of powerful Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, was killed after entering the consulate in Turkey on October 2.</p>

<p>But it has faced <a href="http://www.wionews.com/world/amid-scepticism-saudi-official-provides-yet-another-version-of-khashoggi-death-172620">a growing chorus of incredulity</a> over its belated explanation that he died in a "brawl", as world powers demand answers and the whereabouts of his body.</p>

<p>"I don't think it's credible," Brexit Secretary Dominic Raab told the BBC, adding there was a "serious question mark over the account that has been given".</p>

<p>"We support the Turkish investigation into it, and the British government wants to see people held to account for that death."&nbsp;</p>

<p>After initially saying Khashoggi left the consulate unharmed, and then that they were investigating his disappearance, Saudi authorities conceded the 60-year-old was killed inside the diplomatic compound.</p>

<p>But many questions have remained unanswered since the admission.</p>

<p>Turkish officials have accused Riyadh of carrying out a state-sponsored killing and dismembering the body, with pro-government media in Turkey reporting the existence of video and audio evidence to back those claims.</p>

<p>Police have searched a forest in Istanbul where they believe his body may have been disposed of.</p>

<p>Ankara has vowed to reveal all the details of a two-week inquiry.</p>

<p>Raab called the case "terrible" but said the government was not ending its relationship with the conservative kingdom, which buys hundreds of millions of pounds in weapons from Britain each year.</p>

<p>Noting a "huge number of British jobs" depend on ties, he argued that British influence is best maintained by continuing to talk to the Saudis.</p>

<p>"We have got one of the most rigorous export regimes in the world which makes sure arms are very carefully monitored," Raab added.</p>

<p>The stance echoes that of American President Donald Trump, who has warned against scrapping a multi-billion dollar US-Saudi arms deal. <em><strong>(AFP)</strong></em></p>

"I don't think it's credible," Brexit Secretary Dominic Raab told the BBC, adding there was a "serious question mark over the account that has been given". "We support the Turkish investigation into it, and the British government wants to see people held to account for that death." After initially saying Khashoggi left the consulate unharmed, and then that they were investigating his disappearance, Saudi authorities conceded the 60-year-old was killed inside the diplomatic compound. But many questions have remained unanswered since the admission. Turkish officials have accused Riyadh of carrying out a state-sponsored killing and dismembering the body, with pro-government media in Turkey reporting the existence of video and audio evidence to back those claims. Police have searched a forest in Istanbul where they believe his body may have been disposed of. Ankara has vowed to reveal all the details of a two-week inquiry. Raab called the case "terrible" but said the government was not ending its relationship with the conservative kingdom, which buys hundreds of millions of pounds in weapons from Britain each year. Noting a "huge number of British jobs" depend on ties, he argued that British influence is best maintained by continuing to talk to the Saudis. "We have got one of the most rigorous export regimes in the world which makes sure arms are very carefully monitored," Raab added. <p>The sale of Wembley would be a boost to England's goal of winning a World Cup, the stadium's potential new owner Shahid Khan has said, adding that the iconic venue would remain the home of English football under the proposed deal.</p>

<p>The US&nbsp;billionaire, who owns the NFL's Jacksonville Jaguars, has made an offer to buy Wembley from the English Football Association (FA) in a deal reported to be worth up to 1 billion pounds ($1.38 billion).</p>

<p>Under the plan, the FA would keep Wembley as the main venue to host national games and cup matches and Khan said the name of the stadium would not change.</p>

<p>"Wembley is the essence, the cradle of English football," Khan told the BBC. "We would very much like for England matches and cup finals to be played at Wembley, that is the DNA.</p>

<p>"(The FA) will have a pool of money of about 600 million pounds that can be invested into the core mission of the FA, which is English football and their ultimate goal of winning a World Cup."</p>

<p>The 90,000-seater stadium was reopened in 2007 after being rebuilt at a cost of 757 million pounds on the site of the original ground where England won the World Cup in 1966.</p>

<p>Khan, who also owns Championship side Fulham, said: "Wembley is a great stadium and you want to get it configured to hold Super Bowl and World Cup finals."</p>

<p>He added that he would look into the possibility of installing a roof and that Chelsea would be "welcome" to use the stadium as their temporary home when they leave Stamford Bridge during its redevelopment, which is expected to begin in 2020.</p>

<p>"Personally, I have not spoken to Chelsea, but the CEO of Fulham has spoken to his counterpart at Chelsea," he said.</p>

<p>"It was never an issue to us. Chelsea has been a great club and those relationships go back a long time."</p>

Gunmen kill BBC Pashto journalist in Afghanistan's Khost province

<p>The BBC on Friday apologised for mistakenly referring to Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena as Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a live news broadcast of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) last night.</p>

<p>The Sri Lankan President was seen disembarking from his car at the entrance of Buckingham Palace to join the other heads of government for the CHOGM launch hosted by Queen Elizabeth II when the BBC host said Modi, "the Prime Minister of India since May 2014 arriving at Buckingham Palace".</p>

<p>"This was a mistake made during a live broadcast and we apologise for our error," a BBC spokesperson said.</p>

<p>According to reports, the news presenter on duty was given incorrect information which she went out to read out on air.</p>

<p>This is not the first time the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) finds itself in this embarrassing position.&nbsp</p>

<p>In December last year, the public broadcaster aired clips from the 1976 box-office hit 'Kabhi Kabhie' with actors Amitabh Bachchan and Rishi Kapoor in song sequences when referencing the death of actor Shashi Kapoor.</p>

<p>She accused the British broadcaster when they published the salaries of their highest-paid stars last July, in brackets of &pound;50,000.</p>

<p>After analysing the salary brackets, she realised that her fellow presenter McEnroe&#39;s pay packet was between &pound;150,000 and &pound;199,999 which was comparatively more than her.</p>

<p>&quot;It&#39;s shocking,&quot; Navratilova told the BBC&#39;s Panorama programme.</p>

<p>She also added, &quot;It&#39;s still the good old boys network.... The bottom line is that male voices are valued more than women&#39;s voices.&quot;</p>

BBC appeals to UN over 'collective punishment' of its journalists by Iran

<p>As I sit in Delhi and read the news, I see it being widely reported that Bangalore managed to secure access to additional water from the Cauvery River, resulting in an increase in Karnataka&rsquo;s share of the river and a corresponding decrease in the share of Tamil Nadu. As much as all politicians from both sides of the political divide in my state rejoice this victory, I find the need for vigilance and course correction for outweighing the instinct to celebrate.</p>

<p>In a recent article by the BBC, which listed cities across the globe that are likely to face a water crisis similar to the ongoing one in Cape Town, I was horrified to see my city listed in it. The very rationale for the Hon&rsquo;ble Supreme Court to increase water supply to Karnataka and Bengaluru, i.e., the growing population, also represents the alarming situation we have to grapple with. How will the present allocation sustain what will always be a growing population of Bengaluru?</p>

<p>Make no mistake, I am not unhappy with the verdict, but what I am unhappy about is my city&rsquo;s general approach to water management. Water leakages continue to plague us. The city&rsquo;s lakes which once ensured water independence and enabled a flourishing green scape have been polluted beyond recognition. Where once borewells yielded water without effort, has now increased efforts at digging borewells across the city yielding little or no water because the construction sector has grown without planning or science. Call me silly, but I strongly feel that in an urban landscape like Bengaluru, if a strong science-driven policy had succeeded, could have donated its share of the water to the farmers who need it more than us. After all, for us, water is utility but for a farmer, water is utility and critical to livelihood.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Today&rsquo;s verdict remains a political victory and I suspect it will justify continued complacency of policymakers on the subject of water conservation. But so long as we &ldquo;fight&rdquo; for water, we have already lost. As we start 2018, I hope that the next administration in Bengaluru implements city-wide rainwater harvesting system instead of merely advocating building specific rainwater harvesting systems. I certainly hope we can plan our sewage and storm water drains better to aid the success of sewage treatment plants. It would also be nice if our lakes stopped catching fire. Perhaps, on that line of thought, we could encourage the use and rejuvenation of shallow aquifers in the city to ensure water security for individual homes.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The 14.5 TMC of water allotted to us represents a short-term gain, but the long-term vulnerability remains and as a city, we will have to address it. But true victory is the day we revive our forests, conserve water better and recharge shallow aquifers as well as our borewells. The day we stop fighting for water is the day we truly win.<br />
