The country's best-read and most respected newspaper Prothom Alo reported Sunday that at least 7,835 people had been held, based on reports from its correspondents across the country.

National police spokesman Abir Siddique Shuvra, could not give AFP an exact number of detentions, but said those arrested faced criminal cases and warrants.

"It is impossible to give an exact figure. Police are doing our regular work," he said.

The Dhaka Metropolitan Police previously said that it had arrested more than 2,100 people over charges of violence since last Saturday.

According to the BNP, those detained include its top official in&nbsp;Bangladesh, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, and his number two Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury.

On Sunday the country's Rapid Action Battalion, arrested BNP vice president Altaf Hossain Chowdhury, a former home minister and air force chief.

The arrests came as BNP has enforced a new 48-hour long nationwide transport blockade as part of its new anti-government protests, bringing inter-city bus and lorry transport almost to a halt.

At least 11 buses were torched over the weekend, a fire service spokesman said.

Police say that as well as the officer, at least four people have been killed since last Saturday, while according to the BNP at least nine of its activists have died and more than 3,000 been injured.

The resurgent opposition has been mounting protests against Hasina since September last year, despite its ailing chairperson Khaleda Zia being effectively under house arrest since her release from prison after a conviction on corruption charges.

Hasina's ruling Awami League dominates the legislature in&nbsp;Bangladesh&nbsp;and runs it virtually as a rubber stamp.

Her&nbsp;security forces are accused of detaining tens of thousands of opposition activists, killing hundreds in extrajudicial encounters and disappearing hundreds of leaders and supporters.

Hasina pointed out that Dhaka would not depend on others, adding, "It's no use worrying about who will not issue us visas or who will impose sanctions on us."

"The USA did not issue a visa to Tarique Zia for terrorism and corruption," Hasina added, as per the report.&nbsp;

Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina's remarks come days after the US announced a new visa policy&nbsp;to support Bangladesh’s goal of holding free, fair, and peaceful national elections.&nbsp;

In a statement on May 24, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said, "Under this policy, the United States will be able to restrict the issuance of visas for any Bangladeshi individual, believed to be responsible for, or complicit in, undermining the democratic election process in Bangladesh."

"This includes current and former Bangladeshi officials, members of pro-government and opposition political parties, and members of law enforcement, the judiciary, and security services," Blinken said.&nbsp;

The US Secretary of State added that&nbsp;holding free and fair elections is the responsibility of everyone—voters, political parties, the government, the security forces, civil society, and the media.

The above measure comes as the US has accused Bangladesh of political violence, election manipulation and human rights violations. And according to reports, Wahington in recent years has taken actions to pressurise PM Hasina’s government on human rights and warn it against rigging elections.

A day after the visa policy was announced, Bangladeshi authorities said that they would&nbsp;take steps to tackle and prevent unlawful practices or interference in elections.

"The government apparatus will take necessary measures to prevent and address any unlawful practices or interference...to compromise the smooth and participatory conduct of the elections," the Bangladesh foreign ministry said on May 25.

Salman Khan, Katrina Kaif meet Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina

The Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) is an "internal matter" of India according to Bangladesh prime minister Sheikh Hasina who in her first-ever response to the passage of the controversial legislation enacted last year in India also said that it was "not necessary".

"We don't understand why [the Indian government] did it. It was not necessary," the prime minister said in an interview to Gulf News.

The CAA was passed by the Parliament of India last December, and provides a path to citizenship for members of Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi and Christian religious minorities who have allegedly fled persecution from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan before December 2014.

"[Still], it is an internal affair," Hasina said during a visit to the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week.

"Bangladesh has always maintained that the CAA and NRC are internal matters of India. The Government of India, on their part, has also repeatedly maintained that the NRC is an internal exercise of India and Prime Minister Modi has in person assured me of the same during my visit to New Delhi in October 2019," she added.

Bangladesh, where 10.7 per cent of the 161 million-strong population is Hindu and 0.6 per cent Buddhist, has denied any migration to India because of religious persecution.

India, since the enactment of the CAA last month, along with declarations by the Indian government that the National Register of Citizens (NRC) will be carried out nationwide soon, has been witnessing a continuous stream of protests and violence nationwide.

The National Register of Citizens or NRC, on the other hand, aims to identify illegal immigrants settled in the country.

The prime minister, however, remarked that there has been no recorded reverse migration from India.

On Teesta river issue, Kumar said, "The government of Bangladesh is aware of our position in this regard. I think what is important to note is that apart from Teesta, there are at least seven other trans-border rivers and there is an early meeting of the joint water commission which is held at the level of secretary. That meeting is going to take place very soon."

Reacting to Hasina's remark that she is slightly inconvenienced after Government of India banned the export of onions, the MEA Spokesperson said, "We did see the statement made by the Prime Minister. We are trying to see how to accommodate the concerns which have been reflected by Prime Minister of Bangladesh."

The Bangladeshi Prime Minister is on a four-day visit to India.

Hasina also addressed the World Economic Forum's 33rd India Economic Summit in New Delhi, as the chief guest, on October 3, wherein the Prime Minister sought for more investments in Bangladesh.

"The projects are on LPG import from Bangladesh, vocational training and social facility. The motive of our projects are always to benefit our citizens and improve the quality of their life," Modi stated.&nbsp;

The prime minister added that the projects create a "win-win" situation for both the nations as they will lead to boosting financial situation, employment and income generation.&nbsp;

Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina hoped that the projects will make bilateral trade relations between India and Bangladesh more dynamic. She added that LPG bulk import from Bangladesh to India will meet the demand for fuel energy in India's northeast region.&nbsp;

PM Modi and Hasina had previously met each other on the margins of the United Nations General Assembly in New York last month.

External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Raveesh Kumar, in a weekly press conference, said that the talks will revolve around trade and connectivity, development cooperation, people to people contact, culture and other issues of mutual interest.
