The United Nations Security Council urged Myanmar's military junta to release Aung San Suu Kyi, who has been in prison for the past two years when the army staged a coup and ousted her civilian government.

On Wednesday, the UN body adopted its first-ever resolution on the situation in the Southeast Asian nation, calling for “immediate release all arbitrarily detained prisoners," including 77-year-old Suu Kyi and ex-president Win Myint.

The resolution is historic considering that the 15-member council has been split on Myanmar for decades. Earlier, the body used to issue only formal statements on the state of the country, staying away from meddling in its internal affairs.

The last council resolution regarding Myanmar was the one the UN passed in 1948, approving the country's membership to the world body, reports AFP news agency quoting diplomats.

The resolution has also sought "an immediate end to all forms of violence", asking for "all parties to respect human rights, fundamental freedoms and the rule of law."

The resolution was adopted after attaining 12 votes, with permanent members China and Russia abstaining. They also did not opt to veto the text. Notably, India also abstained.

"Any opportunity for the Security Council to speak with one strong, united voice on any issue and especially on Myanmar would be much welcomed," Secretary-General Antonio Guterres's spokesman said ahead of the vote.

The UK had drafted the text of Wednesday's resolution in September, following which several amendments were made to ensure its passing, UN watchers told AFP.

Text relating to the council's determination to use all its powers if Myanmar fails to adhere to the resolution was reportedly dropped.

Apart from that, several members objected to a provision requesting the UN secretary-general to report to the council on the situation in Myanmar every 60 days.

Myanmar court jails Suu Kyi for 3 years

Myanmar's deposed leader Aung San Suu Kyi has been awarded another&nbsp;six-year sentence for accepting bribes, and corruption by one of the nation's military courts, even as media is barred from attending her trials and even her lawyers are banned from speaking to the press.

Suu Kyi has been accused of accepting bribes from Maung Weik, a businessman, reported AFP citing a source, adding that she has been "sentenced to three years imprisonment each for two corruption cases".&nbsp;

The two sentences will reportedly run concurrently, which means that three years will be added to her jail time, bringing the total to 26 years. She also faces charges for at least 18 other offences ranging from graft to election violations, carrying combined maximum terms of nearly 190 years.

Myanmar court gives 6 more years in jail to ousted leader Aung San Suu Kyi on corruption charges

The military government in Myanmar extended the state of emergency in the country by six months, said state media in Myanmar. The junta chief has said that elections can only take place when situation in the country "was stable and peaceful".

Myanmar's military, led by Min Ayng Hlaing, toppled civillian government led by Aung San Suu Kyi last year.

According to a report in Global New Light of Myanmar, Hlaing requested the military government to "allow him to serve for an additional 6 months"

Members of the junta's National Defence and Security Council "unanimously supported the proposal", it said.

The military government has previously said that elections would be held and the state of emergency lifted by August 2023 -- extending the initial one-year timeline it announced days after the coup.

To justify its coup, the military alleges massive fraud during 2020 elections. The elections were won by Suu Kyi's &nbsp;National League for Democracy (NLD).

Last year, it cancelled the results of the polls, saying it had uncovered more than 11 million instances of voter fraud.

International observers said the voting was largely free and fair.

Suu Kyi has been detained since the coup and faces an eclectic raft of charges that could see her jailed for more than 150 years.&nbsp;

According to a report in Global New Light of Myanmar, Hlaing requested the military government to "allow him to serve for an additional 6 months" Members of the junta's National Defence and Security Council "unanimously supported the proposal", it said. The military government has previously said that elections would be held and the state of emergency lifted by August 2023 -- extending the initial one-year timeline it announced days after the coup. To justify its coup, the military alleges massive fraud during 2020 elections. The elections were won by Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy (NLD). Last year, it cancelled the results of the polls, saying it had uncovered more than 11 million instances of voter fraud. International observers said the voting was largely free and fair. Suu Kyi has been detained since the coup and faces an eclectic raft of charges that could see her jailed for more than 150 years. Myanmar: UN expert urges more pressure on Junta as it shifts Suu Kyi to solitary confinement

Myanmar's military junta has shifted Nobel laureate and former state councilor Aung San Suu Kyi to solitary confinement from house arrest. The announcement was made by junta spokesman Zaw Min Tun in a statement. She was shifted to solitary confinement on Wednesday (June 22).

Her future trial hearings would take place inside a courtroom within the prison compound, he added.

She was previously held in a&nbsp;house arrest at an undisclosed location. She left the premises only to attend hearings in a junta court.

Suu Kyi was in "strong spirits" after the transfer, a source with knowledge of the case told AFP on Thursday.

"She acts like before and is in strong spirits," said the source, who requested anonymity. "She is used to facing any kind of situation calmly."

A source with knowledge of the case said Suu Kyi's domestic staff and her dog had not accompanied her when she was moved on Wednesday, and that security around the prison compound was "tighter than before".

"Aung San Suu Kyi is in good health as far as we know," they added, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Suu Kyi will be provided with three female staff from inside the prison to look after her, said another source with knowledge of the matter, without specifying whether they would be convicts or prison wardens.

Aung San Suu Kyi's civilian government was toppled by military junta in a coup on February 1, 2021. The military regime hasn detained thousands of pro-democracy protesters. Many of them are facing secret trials. Rights groups allege that these trials are politically motivated.

Convicted over corruption charges, Myanmar's Aung San Suu Kyi gets 5 years in prison

A Myanmar junta court on Monday postponed giving its first verdict in the corruption trial of ousted leader&nbsp;Aung San Suu Kyi, a junta spokesman told AFP, a case which could see the Nobel laureate jailed for 15 years.&nbsp;

Suu&nbsp;Kyi, 76, has been detained since the generals staged a coup and ousted her government in February last year, ending the Southeast Asian country's brief period of democracy.

She has since been hit with a series of charges, including violating the official secrets act, corruption and electoral fraud, and she faces decades in jail if convicted on all counts.

She is also on trial for breaching the official secrets act, where she is accused alongside detained Australian academic Sean Turnell.&nbsp;

She has already been sentenced to six years in jail for incitement against the military, breaching Covid-19 rules and breaking a telecommunications law -- although she will remain under house arrest while she fights other charges.

Myanmar junta court delays verdict in Suu Kyi corruption trial

The European Union on Monday imposed sanctions on several top officials in Myanmar and on a lucrative state-owned oil and gas company that has helped fund the military that overthrew the country's elected government a year ago.

The bloc imposed asset freezes and travel bans on 22 people and slapped restrictive measures on four entities, including state-owned and private companies.

Among those sanctioned was the state-owned Myanma Oil and Gas Enterprise (MOGE), which is a joint venture partner in all offshore gas projects in Myanmar, including the Yadana gas field with Total Energies and Chevron.

Last month, Total and Chevron said they were exiting Myanmar amid rampant human rights abuses committed by the military.

The sanctions on MOGE come after a long campaign by human rights groups within Myanmar and around the world, who argued that sanctioning MOGE would cut off a significant source of the military's funds.

About 50% of Myanmar's foreign currency comes from natural gas revenues, with MOGE expected to earn $1.5 billion from offshore and pipeline projects in 2021-2022, according to a Myanmar government forecast.

Prior rounds of U.S. And European sanctions against the Myanmar military have excluded oil and gas. The Yadana field supplies gas to Myanmar and neighbouring Thailand.

EU headquarters said in a statement that the bloc is deeply concerned by the continuing escalation of violence in Myanmar and the evolution towards a protracted conflict with regional implications. Since the military coup, the situation has continuously and gravely deteriorated.

John Sifton, Asia advocacy director of Human Rights Watch, applauded the EU's decision, noting that the sanctions against MOGE were particularly important given how crucial the company's revenues are to the military.

It is vital, however, that the European Union enforce these measures effectively, and that energy companies now withdrawing from Myanmar do so in a way that doesn't further benefit the junta, Sifton said in a statement.

The European Union must implement these measures in ways that ensure that energy companies' shares in oil and gas operations are not simply transferred or relinquished to junta-controlled entities&nbsp;an outcome that would only enrich the junta further.

The junta cancelled the results of the 2020 election in July last year, saying it had found some 11.3 million instances of fraud.

Independent monitors said the polls were largely free and fair.&nbsp;

The junta has promised to hold another election by August 2023 if the country -- currently riven by fighting between the military and anti-coup fighters -- is restored.&nbsp;

The Philippine foreign minister said on Sunday that Myanmar's deposed civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi was 'indispensable' for restoring democracy in the country.

Aung San Suu Kyi's civilian government was ousted in a military coup on February 1 last year. She was sentenced to four years in prison after having been convicted on January 10.

The junta court has since hit Suu Kyi, 76, with five new corruption charges -- adding to a slew of cases against her.&nbsp;

While several Western countries, including the United States and Norway, have slammed the latest sentencing, Southeast Asian leaders have been largely silent.&nbsp;

Philippines Foreign Minister Teodoro Locsin broke ranks Sunday, tweeting he had adopted "as my own" a statement by his Norwegian counterpart Anniken Huitfeldt that condemned the sentencing.&nbsp;

"Suu Kyi is indispensable in a democratic restoration that will pose no threat of anarchy, dissolution, and civil conflict," Locsin said, adding Myanmar's armed forces "have nothing to fear".

Locsin also backed the recent visit to Myanmar by Cambodia's strongman ruler Hun Sen -- the first by a foreign leader since the coup -- highlighting regional tensions over how to deal with the crisis-hit nation.

Critics said the visit by Hun Sen, whose country holds the rotating chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), risked legitimising the junta and undermining efforts to isolate the generals.&nbsp;

But Locsin said Hun Sen achieved "headways" and "deserves wholehearted support".

Suu Kyi 'indispensable' for democracy in Myanmar, says the Philippines

In the latest of a series of trials, a Myanmar court has sentenced deposed civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi to four additional years in prison&nbsp;on Monday (January 10).

She has been sentenced to four years in prison. The sentencing represents another legal onslaught again the iconic leader. Military junta has already sentenced her to two years in jail over allegations of inciting people against the military regime.&nbsp;

What were the charges under which she was convicted?

The military junta has found Aung San Suu Kyi guilty of illegally importing and owning walkie-talkies and breaking Covid rules. Critics and international observers say that the military regime is conjuring up any charges, however minor, to embroil Suu Kyi in legal hassles.

What will happen now?

Military junta spokesperson Major General Zaw Min Tun was quoted by AFP as saying that Aung San Suu Kyi would continue to be in house arrest while other charges against her are processed.

What other charges have been slapped against Suu Kyi?

There is a long list. Military junta apparently has left no stone unturned in creating obstacles in Suu Kyi's path.

The charges include:

<ul>
	<li>Obtaining and communicating secret information that could be useful to an enemy</li>
	<li>Electoral fraud and lawless actions</li>
	<li>Violations of the anti-corruption law</li>
</ul>

The corruption charges involve allegations of,

<ul>
	<li>Misusing funds from the Daw Khin Kyi Foundation Suu Kyi chaired, to build a home.</li>
	<li>Leasing government-owned land at a discounted rate.</li>
	<li>Accepting bribes totalling $600,000 and 11.4 kg of gold bars.</li>
	<li>Misuse of state funds for renting, buying a helicopter.</li>
</ul>

Has the trial of Suu Kyi been open to public?

No. Journalists have been barred from attending hearings, and Suu Kyi's lawyers have been muzzled from speaking to the media. In an attempt to say that fair trial is in process, military junta claims that Suu Kyi is being given due process by an independent court led by a judge appointed by her own administration.

Where is Suu Kyi being held in house arrest?

Military junta has not revealed exact location where Suu Kyi is being held under house arrest. Military ruler Min Aung Hlaing last month said Suu Kyi and ousted President Win Myint would remain in the same location during their trials and would not be sent to prison.

Photos of Myanmar's top Catholic prelate, Cardinal Charles Bo, with the country's junta chief Min Aung Hlaing sparked outrage after he was seen cutting a cake with coup leader amid a deadly military crackdown in the country. State-backed Global New Light of Myanmar newspaper reported that Cardinal Charles Bo met the junta chief on Thursday (December 23) to hear Christmas carols. The meeting was also intended to "talk about peaceful and prosperous affairs" in the country. In one of the photos published by the state media, they can be seen sitting together in front of a Christmas tree. Another photo showed that they were cutting the cake. Meanwhile, in one photo, Min Aung Hlaing was spotted handing over a donation of $11,200. Bo was ordained a Cardinal by Pope Francis in 2015. 'Cutting cakes with a murderer?': Photos of top Myanmar Catholic with junta chief spark outrage

Indian foreign secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla, who is on a two-day visit to Myanmar, held meetings with the military junta chief, Min Aung Hlaing, and members of Aung San Suu Kyi’s political party, the National League for Democracy (NLD), on Thursday and conveyed India’s interest in seeing “Myanmar’s return to democracy at the earliest.”

Senior Gen. Min Aung Hlaing had launched the coup in February and ousted the country's charismatic leader Aung San Suu Kyi to become the prime minister.

In a statement, India’s ministry of external affairs said, “During his meetings with all concerned, foreign secretary emphasised India’s interest in seeing Myanmar’s return to democracy at the earliest, release of detainees and prisoners, resolution of issues through dialogue, and complete cessation of all violence.”

The statement added that India expressed its support to the five-point consensus of the ASEAN on Myanmar and “hoped that progress would be made in a pragmatic and constructive manner”.

India had requested for a meeting with Aung San Suu Kyi but it not materialised. During the visit, the foreign secretary&nbsp;had meetings with envoys of the US, Australia, Norway, Czech Republic, Cambodia, Thailand, Japan-based out of the country.

During the meeting, India also raised “matters related to India’s security” in view of the recent Churachandpur incident and called on Myanmar’s military leadership to put an end to any form of violence and maintain peace and stability in the border areas.

“Both sides reiterated their commitment to ensure that their respective territories would not be allowed to be used for any activities inimical to the other,” the statement said.

Last month, insurgents had attacked a convoy of Assam rifles killing its Commanding Officer Colonel Viplav Tripathi, his wife and his five-year-old son, along with four personnel in northeastern Manipur state, which borders Myanmar.

The People’s Liberation Army and the Manipur Naga People’s Front claimed responsibility for the incident.

Notably, the release pointed out that “any developments” in Myanmar “have a direct impact on India’s bordering regions. Peace and stability in Myanmar remain of utmost importance to India, specifically to its North Eastern Region.”

Recently, Myanmar had handed over five insurgents to India, the second time in two years that such a development has taken place.&nbsp;

On the connectivity front, projects like Kaladan Multimodal Transit Transport Project and the Trilateral Highway were also discussed with New Delhi retreating its “commitment for expeditious implementation of ongoing connectivity initiatives”.

India has been developing projects like the Rakhine State Development Programme and Border Area Development Programme for Rohingya refugees, which the MEA statement has categorically called “people of Myanmar”.

As part of the development programme, India has handed over pre-fabricated houses to displaced returnees.

During the visit, Shringla also handed over 1 million doses of “Made in India” vaccines to the Myanmar Red Cross Society and a grant of 10,000 tons of rice and wheat.

Notably, Myanmar was the first country to get Indian made vaccines when New Delhi started its vaccine export program in January this year. The first consignment of vaccines was sent to the country on January 22 this year. So far, India has sent 4.7 million doses of vaccines to the ASEAN country.

'Situation has not improved': US threatens new measures against Myanmar junta

Myanmar&nbsp;soldiers have been accused of rounding up 11 people in a village in a central area of the strife-torn country before shooting them and setting fire to their bodies, according to residents in the area and media reports.

The charred remains were found in a village in Sagaing, an area which has seen fierce fighting between security forces and militia set up by opponents of military rule since a February&nbsp;1 coup, said residents, who said some of the victims were still alive when burned.

Video footage purporting to show the burned bodies was circulated on social media and images were published by some media including the&nbsp;Myanmar&nbsp;Now news portal.

Reuters could not independently verify the authenticity of the footage or claims over how the 11 died and a spokesman for the junta did not answer calls seeking comment.

Another volunteer aid worker said they had spoken to witnesses among some of the 3,000 people who had fled from five villages in the area and had gone into hiding, fearful of more arrests and killings.

A relative of one of the victims told Reuters the dead man, Htet Ko, was a 22-year-old university student and not a member of any militia and not armed.

"This is inhumane. I feel deep pain in my heart," said the relative, who said the man had tried to flee, but had been wounded by gun fire.

Dr Sasa, a spokesperson for&nbsp;Myanmar's shadow civilian government set up following the coup, alleged the victims had been "lashed together, tortured, and ultimately burned alive".

In a post on social media, he listed what he said were the names of the 11, all male and including a boy of 14.

"These horrific attacks show that the military have no regard for the sanctity of human life," he said.

The Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP), a monitoring group cited by the United Nations, says more than 10,700 civilians have been detained and 1,300 killed by security forces since the military seized power.

The military says AAPP is biased and uses exaggerated data and that hundreds of soldiers have also been killed.

Myanmar soldiers have been accused of rounding up 11 people in a village in a central area of the strife-torn country before shooting them and setting fire to their bodies, according to residents in the area and media reports. The charred remains were found in a village in Sagaing, an area which has seen fierce fighting between security forces and militia set up by opponents of military rule since a February 1 coup, said residents, who said some of the victims were still alive when burned. Video footage purporting to show the burned bodies was circulated on social media and images were published by some media including the Myanmar Now news portal. Reuters could not independently verify the authenticity of the footage or claims over how the 11 died and a spokesman for the junta did not answer calls seeking comment. "The troops were just brutally killing anyone they could find," the volunteer said, citing witness accounts. The volunteer has assisted people who have fled Don Taw and other nearby villages. The volunteer said it was unclear if the victims were militia members or ordinary civilians. Myanmar has been in chaos since the military overthrew Aung San Suu Kyi's democratically elected government, with widespread protests and the formation of militia, known as People's Defence Forces (PDF), to take on the well-equipped army. Myanmar's Aung San Suu Kyi jailed for four years for inciting dissent against military

Myanmar military junta chief reduced deposed leader Aung San Suu Kyi's jail term by two years, said state&nbsp;media. The former state cousellor of Myanmar was sentenced to four years in jail on Monday (December 6). She faced charges of corruption, flouting Covid rules and more.

Suu Kyi and former president Win Myint had their sentences for incitement against the military and flouting coronavirus rules "pardoned to two years", from four by junta chief Min Aung Hlaing, state TV said.

Suu Kyi's government was toppled by military junta in a coup on February 1. The military used force to quell the subsequent protests that rocked the nation.

Suu Kyi's sentencing drew global condemnation. United Nations human rights chief Michelle Bachelet <a href="https://www.wionews.com/south-asia/un-deplores-suu-kyi-conviction-calls-trial-a-sham-434574">called trial of Aung San Suu Kyi a 'sham'</a>

The conviction of Suu Kyi "closes another door to political dialogue" in Myanmar, where the military took power on Feb. 1, and "will only deepen rejection of the coup", Bachelet said in a statement issued by her Geneva office.

“The conviction of the State Counsellor following a sham trial in secretive proceedings before a military-controlled court is nothing but politically-motivated,” Bachelet added.

The US condemned Suu Kyi's sentence. It slammed the sentencing as an 'affront' to justice.

"We urge the regime to release Aung San Suu Kyi and all those unjustly detained, including other democratically elected officials," Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in a statement.

The European Union was unhappy over Suu Kyi's sentencing as well.

"The European Union strongly condemns this politically motivated verdict, which constitutes another major setback for democracy in Myanmar since the military coup on 1 February 2021,” said EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell in a statement.

Aung San Suu Kyi is a Nobel laureate. The Nobel Committee has expressed concern as well.

"The Nobel Committee is concerned about what this means for the future of democracy in Myanmar. It is also concerned about the impact a long prison term may have on Aung San Suu Kyi personally," committee chairwoman Berit Reiss-Andersen told AFP in an email.
