The military has cited alleged widespread voter fraud during elections in November 2020, which were won resoundingly by the NLD, as a reason for its coup, which sparked huge protests and a bloody crackdown.&nbsp;

International observers said at the time that the polls were largely free and fair.

A prisoner of the military since the 2021 coup, Suu Kyi, 77, has been convicted on every charge levelled against her, ranging from corruption to illegally possessing walkie-talkies and flouting Covid restrictions.&nbsp;

On Wednesday, the UN body adopted its first-ever resolution on the situation in the Southeast Asian nation, calling for “immediate release all arbitrarily detained prisoners," including 77-year-old Suu Kyi and ex-president Win Myint.

The resolution is historic considering that the 15-member council has been split on Myanmar for decades. Earlier, the body used to issue only formal statements on the state of the country, staying away from meddling in its internal affairs.

The last council resolution regarding Myanmar was the one the UN passed in 1948, approving the country's membership to the world body, reports AFP news agency quoting diplomats.

The resolution has also sought "an immediate end to all forms of violence", asking for "all parties to respect human rights, fundamental freedoms and the rule of law."

The resolution was adopted after attaining 12 votes, with permanent members China and Russia abstaining. They also did not opt to veto the text. Notably, India also abstained.

"Any opportunity for the Security Council to speak with one strong, united voice on any issue and especially on Myanmar would be much welcomed," Secretary-General Antonio Guterres's spokesman said ahead of the vote.

The UK had drafted the text of Wednesday's resolution in September, following which several amendments were made to ensure its passing, UN watchers told AFP.

Text relating to the council's determination to use all its powers if Myanmar fails to adhere to the resolution was reportedly dropped.

Apart from that, several members objected to a provision requesting the UN secretary-general to report to the council on the situation in Myanmar every 60 days.

According to AFP, a source said that co-accused Win Myint, the deposed president, was also given the same sentence as Suu Kyi. Both of them were accused of voter fraud and using intimidation in 2020.&nbsp;

While no official statement was released on the part of the Myanmar government, the junta has always maintained that Suu Kyi was given all the opportunities to defend herself in court.&nbsp;

Junta chief said that he would consider allowing Suu Kyi to be moved to house arrest from prison but only after verdicts in a litany of cases against her have been reached.&nbsp;

Min Aung Hlaing said in a statement, "After the legal processes against her according to the law are finished we are going to consider (negotiations) based on her response."&nbsp;

The statement added, "I will consider the matter...after the verdict is done. We did not impose strong charges on her and showed mercy even though we were able to do more."&nbsp;&nbsp;

Myanmar court gives 6 more years in jail to ousted leader Aung San Suu Kyi on corruption charges

The military government in Myanmar extended the state of emergency in the country by six months, said state media in Myanmar. The junta chief has said that elections can only take place when situation in the country "was stable and peaceful".

Myanmar's military, led by Min Ayng Hlaing, toppled civillian government led by Aung San Suu Kyi last year.

According to a report in Global New Light of Myanmar, Hlaing requested the military government to "allow him to serve for an additional 6 months"

Members of the junta's National Defence and Security Council "unanimously supported the proposal", it said.

The military government has previously said that elections would be held and the state of emergency lifted by August 2023 -- extending the initial one-year timeline it announced days after the coup.

To justify its coup, the military alleges massive fraud during 2020 elections. The elections were won by Suu Kyi's &nbsp;National League for Democracy (NLD).

Last year, it cancelled the results of the polls, saying it had uncovered more than 11 million instances of voter fraud.

International observers said the voting was largely free and fair.

Suu Kyi has been detained since the coup and faces an eclectic raft of charges that could see her jailed for more than 150 years.&nbsp;

Suu Kyi was in "strong spirits" after the transfer, a source with knowledge of the case told AFP on Thursday.

"She acts like before and is in strong spirits," said the source, who requested anonymity. "She is used to facing any kind of situation calmly."

A source with knowledge of the case said Suu Kyi's domestic staff and her dog had not accompanied her when she was moved on Wednesday, and that security around the prison compound was "tighter than before".

"Aung San Suu Kyi is in good health as far as we know," they added, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Suu Kyi will be provided with three female staff from inside the prison to look after her, said another source with knowledge of the matter, without specifying whether they would be convicts or prison wardens.

Aung San Suu Kyi's civilian government was toppled by military junta in a coup on February 1, 2021. The military regime hasn detained thousands of pro-democracy protesters. Many of them are facing secret trials. Rights groups allege that these trials are politically motivated.

A Myanmar junta court on Monday postponed giving its first verdict in the corruption trial of ousted leader&nbsp;Aung San Suu Kyi, a junta spokesman told AFP, a case which could see the Nobel laureate jailed for 15 years.&nbsp;

Suu&nbsp;Kyi, 76, has been detained since the generals staged a coup and ousted her government in February last year, ending the Southeast Asian country's brief period of democracy.

She has since been hit with a series of charges, including violating the official secrets act, corruption and electoral fraud, and she faces decades in jail if convicted on all counts.

"There was no verdict today," in the corruption trial in which&nbsp;Suu&nbsp;Kyi&nbsp;is accused of accepting a bribe of $600,000 cash and gold bars from the former chief minister of Yangon, junta spokesman Zaw Min Tun told AFP.

He did not give any details on when a verdict would be reached.&nbsp;

Journalists have been barred from attending the special court hearings in the military-built capital Naypyidaw and&nbsp;Suu&nbsp;Kyi's lawyers have been banned from speaking to the media.

Suu&nbsp;Kyi&nbsp;is facing a total of 10 corruption charges -- each with a possible 15-year jail term.

She is also on trial for breaching the official secrets act, where she is accused alongside detained Australian academic Sean Turnell.&nbsp;

She has already been sentenced to six years in jail for incitement against the military, breaching Covid-19 rules and breaking a telecommunications law -- although she will remain under house arrest while she fights other charges.

That likely excludes the popular leader from elections the junta has said it plans to hold by next year.

Since the coup, many members of her National League for Democracy -- which trounced a military-backed party in 2020 elections -- have been arrested, with one chief minister sentenced to 75 years in jail.

Under a previous junta regime,&nbsp;Suu&nbsp;Kyi&nbsp;spent long spells under house arrest at her family's colonial-era mansion in Yangon.

More than 1,700 people have been killed and over 13,000 arrested in a crackdown on dissent since the coup, according to a local monitoring group.
