Ahead of the third Ashes Test, at Leeds, former Australia captain Ricky Ponting lavished huge praise on Steve Smith, who is gearing up for his 100th Test match when Australia and England lock horns in the third Test, at Leeds, Headingley, and will become the 14th Australian to reach three-figure Test appearances. Easily one of the greatest Test batters of current times, and a modern-day great, Smith has been Australia's go-to-batter in whites. Thus, Ponting made a big claim as he feels Smith is Australia's second-greatest batter after Don Bradman.

"If it all ended tomorrow, he'd be the second-greatest batsman Australia have produced after Don Bradman. Statistically, you cannot argue with that. He's achieving things so quickly. Even at Lord's, he became the second-fastest in history to reach 9,000 Test runs," Ponting said while speaking with Nasser Hussain for the Daily Mail.

Steve Smith is the second-greatest batter Australia produced after Don Bradman, feels Ricky Ponting

Things went out of hand after Jonny Bairstow's controversial dismissal on Day 5 of the second Ashes Test, at Lord's, on Sunday (July 02). After the Englishman ducked a slower bouncer from Cameron Green, during his side's unsuccessful 371-run chase, he was caught wandering off the crease and, as a result, was stumped by Alex Carey. His mode of dismissal sparked a huge controversy as the ones slamming it brought forward the 'Spirit of Cricket' debate whereas majority favoured Carey's action as it remains within the laws of the game.

After Bairstow's dismissal, Stuart Broad joined captain Ben Stokes (155) in the middle as they added 110 runs before England folded for 327 in pursuit of 371. During the Broad-Stokes partnership, the former took a dig at Carey for his actions. Moreover, the members of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) also joined in and mocked Aussie opener Usman Khawaja when both sides dispersed for the lunch break on Sunday. With MCC members also targetting the Australians, things went out of hand and many slammed their actions.

Now, former England captain David Gower has slammed MCC members for reckling Khawaja. He found their action 'horribly ironic' and said that 'it is a sort of pack mentality' which he does not appreciate. He lost his cool as Khawaja is 'actually the nicest man in cricket' and the MCC members should not have targetted him.

"I found it horribly ironic, and horrible is the keyword, that MCC members were attacking Usman Khawaja, who is actually the nicest man in cricket. It's just wrong. I was in Australia for the last Ashes series and I watched him make hundreds there and watched him make his hundreds here as well. First of all, it's picking on the wrong man. It's a sort of pack mentality which I don't like, I absolutely hate," Gower said while speaking to SEN's Sportsday.

After the match, Khawaja reacted to the onslaught he faced from the MCC members and said, "It was really disappointing. Lord's is one of my favourite places to come. There's always respect shown at Lord's, particularly in the Members Pavilion in the Long Room, but there wasn't today. It was very disappointing.

"If anyone asked me where the best place is to play I always say Lord's. The crowd is great, particularly the members are great, and some of the stuff that was coming out of the members' mouths is really disappointing and I wasn't just going stand by and cop it. So I just talked to a few of them. A few of them throwing out some pretty big allegations and I just called them up on it and they kept going, and I was like, well, this is your membership here. So I'm just pointing them out. But it's pretty disrespectful, to be honest. I just expect a lot better from the members," he added.

Ashes 2023: David Gower lashes out at MCC members for mocking Usman Khawaja in Lords' Long Room

The opening two Tests in Ashes 2023 have been riveting, to say the least. Pat Cummins-led Australia held their nerves in the series opener to win by two wickets before coming on top of Ben Stokes & Co. in the second encounter by 43 runs, in defence of 371, amid huge drama at Lord's. As Australia are one victory away from winning their first away Ashes series since 2001, former Australia captain Ricky Ponting has a suggestion for Ben Stokes & Co.

Ponting pointed out how James Anderson, England's pace spearhead, has not looked his usual best. In the first two Tests, the 40-year-old only claimed three scalps and looked completely out of sorts. Meanwhile, Stuart Broad has picked 11 wickets whereas Ollie Robinson has ten scalps so far. Even Josh Tongue, who made his debut in the Lord's Test, also returned with 3 for 98 and 2 for 53 in the two innings. Thus, Ponting feels the veteran speedster can be dropped for the Leeds Test with the series on the line for Stokes & Co.

"From what I saw last week, I thought he was the standard of their fast bowlers," Ponting told Sanjana Ganesan on the latest episode of The ICC Review. He opined, "(Stuart) Broad got the wickets in the second innings, but Tongue got early breakthroughs."

'James Anderson looked like the most disappointing bowler for England so far'

The former Aussie skipper highlighted, "They were both very similar dismissals from around the wicket with the ball coming back in. I think that is something that they need to consider as well. He (Anderson) looked like the most disappointing bowler for England so far. What you expect from James Anderson is when he's got that new ball in his hand, he's taking early wickets, he's moving the ball, and he's not going for any runs. We haven't seen that in the series so far."

"And that's not a direct criticism of James Anderson. He's been one of the all-time greats of the game, his longevity and his wicket-taking ability, but if I was looking at the bowlers I saw last week, I think he's the one that's looked to have the least amount of penetration," Punter stated.

He added, "(Ollie) Robinson's had less penetration, but he's probably actually bowled a bit better. He's been in control of the game more than Anderson has. They've still got a few questions there with Moeen. Do they risk going into the game again and having the same (injury) happen?"

"I doubt that he would have bowled enough between the end of Edgbaston and the start of Headingley for them to be 100 per cent convinced that he's going to be physically right to bowl a lot of overs in a Test match. It could get down to the stage where they're bowling last at Headingley and they might need someone like him to bowl 25 or 30 overs in an innings, Ponting concluded."

The third Test commences on July 06 at Leeds, Headingley. England will be desperate to keep the five-match series alive after losing two close encounters.

James Anderson has been most disappointing: Ricky Ponting suggests hosts can drop pacer for Leeds Test

England went down to Australia by 43 runs on Day 5 of the second Ashes Test, at Lord's, on Sunday (July 2). The final day began with England resuming at 114 for 4 before the home side lost both Ben Duckett (83) and Jonny Bairstow (10), in a controversial manner, as captain Ben Stokes upped the ante and stitched an entertaining 108-run seventh-wicket stand with Stuart Broad.

The partnership ended with Josh Hazlewood dismissing Stokes for a brilliant 155, laced with nine fours and equal number of sixes, but his departure led to England being dismissed for 327. Thus, the home side lost by 43 runs to concede a 2-0 lead. While Stokes' majestic knock made heads turn, Bairstow's dismissal also led to varied opinions in the cricketing fraternity and social media platforms. The Englishman was caught wandering off the crease after he ducked a slower bouncer off Cameron Green. He soon left the crease as he felt the ball was dead before Aussie wicketkeeper Alex Carey stumped him out; leaving his counterpart shellshocked.

Since then, some have pointed fingers at Australia for foul play whereas a majority feel the right call was made as Bairstow was caught being careless. Following the controversial dismissal, England Test coach Brendon McCullum is hopeful the Bairstow incident will galvanise England unit for a memorable Ashes comeback.

Speaking to BBC Cricket, he said, "I don't know if it's anger but the unit is galvanised. There are times as a coach where you've got to reduce emotion because it's going to bubble over and you can make poor decisions, but there's times when you allow emotion to go because it's going to galvanise the unit."

'Don't know if it's anger but...': McCullum hopeful Bairstow incident will 'galvanise' Eng for Ashes comeback

A lot of drama unfolded on Day 5 of the second Ashes Test, at Lord's, between England and Australia after the visitors defeated Ben Stokes & Co. by 43 runs to go 2-0 up in the series. The final day commenced with England 114-4 but were soon reduced to 193 for 6 before skipper Stokes played a blinder (155) to keep England's hopes alive. His dismissal led to his side's surrender as the home side got dismissed for 327.

His Australian counterpart Alex Carey, thus, stumped him out as a huge controversy broke out. Nonetheless, it was within the laws of the game and, hence, he made the long walk back to the pavillion. After the decision was out, MCC members took a dig at Aussie players in the Pavillion Long Room at Lord's whereas former England and Australia cricketers also had a go at one another.

On Monday (July 03), an Australian newspaper put out a picture of Stokes with the headline ‘Cry-babies’ following the outburst in the aftermath of Bairstow's dismissal. Stokes didn't hold back and was quick to respond.

Stokes took to Twitter and wrote, “That’s definitely not me, since when did I bowl with the new ball.”

While Stokes' knock made heads turn, Jonny Bairstow's dismissal also became a huge talking point. The wicketkeeper ducked a slower bouncer from Cameron Green and was caught wandering off the crease as he felt the ball was dead. Stokes took to Twitter and wrote, “That’s definitely not me, since when did I bowl with the new ball.” That’s definitely not me, since when did I bowl with the new ball https://t.co/24wI5GzohD — Ben Stokes (@benstokes38) July 3, 2023 × Also Read: 'Don't know if it's anger but...': McCullum hopeful Bairstow incident will 'galvanise' Eng for Ashes comeback Even England and Australian Prime Ministers have got involved in the Bairstow row. 'When did I....': Ben Stokes hits back at Australian newspaper for 'crybabies' remark after Lord's Test drama

Day 5 of the second Ashes Test, at Lord's, saw plenty of action and drama. The final day began with England 114-4, in pursuit of 371. Ben Duckett (83) and captain Ben Stokes commenced in style as they consolidated their fifth-wicket stand. They added a total of 132 runs before Duckett's departure whereas the hosts also lost Jonny Bairstow (10) before lunch.

After Bairstow's fall, in a bizarre fashion, Stokes upped the ante and added 108 runs, for the seventh wicket, with Stuart Broad (11) before he fell for a majestic 155 as England folded for 327. Thus, the home side lost by 43 runs to concede a 2-0 lead. While Stokes made a lot of noise with his berserk inning, Bairstow's dismissal became a huge talking point as well.

After ducking a slower bouncer from Cameron Green, Bairstow was caught wandering off the crease -- as he felt the ball was dead -- and the Aussie wicketkeeper Alex Carey stumped him out. The Englishman was stunned before he was asked to make the long walk back to the pavilion. His mode of dismissal triggered a huge controversy as some raised fingers on Australia for foul play whereas many hailed Carey's presence of mind. Here's the video of Bairstow's dismissal -

Underarm bowling on cards? Pat Cummins gives EPIC reply to English journalist after Lord's Test drama

The England cricket team find themselves in a precarious situation having lost the second Ashes Test by 43 runs at Lord’s. Chasing a target of 371, the hosts were bowled out for 327 on day five of the Test match. England skipper Ben Stokes pulled off a tremendous knock of 155 runs and he was the last man standing for his side. Stokes’s brilliance might have gone in vain but the star all-rounder’s phenomenal knock was praised by many. Virat Kohli was one of many who lavished huge praise on Stokes. Applauding Stokes’ terrific knock, the former India captain tweeted, “I wasn’t joking about calling Ben Stokes the most competitive bloke I’ve played against. Innings of the highest quality but Australia is too good at the moment.”

Ben Stokes’ brilliance

In the second innings, Ben Stokes came out to bat at the fall of the fourth wicket after England’s top order failed miserably. Ben Duckett offered a good support to Stokes. But Duckett once again failed to breach the three-digit mark having been dismissed for 83. Stokes’ superb counter-attacking style of batting did change the momentum. A panic was seen in the Australian camp after Stokes’ change of gear. It seemed that the English skipper would succeed in guiding his side to a remarkable win at Lord’s. But Josh Hazlewood, eventually, sent Stokes back to the dressing room in the 73rd over of the second innings. Stokes’ knock comprised nine sixes and as many boundaries. Stokes’ century also turned out to be an England captain’s first Ashes ton at the Lord’s since Andrew Strauss' 161 in 2009.

Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc picked up three wickets each to earn a sensational victory for the visitors. England’s James Anderson and Josh Tongue added 25 runs for the final wicket but it could hardly do enough to deter Australia from claiming a lead of 2-0 in the five-match Ashes. The third Test is scheduled to start from July 6 at Headingley in Leeds.
