<p>What is it about franchises that have enthralled us as an audience since time immemorial? The taste for a backstory or a continuation of something we have adored on the screen for the first time, yes?. This is what you’d expect from Netflix’s ‘Army of Thieves’, prequel to Zack Snyder’s ‘Army of the Dead’ in which a band of mercenaries try to loot a history-laden secret safe in a zombie-infested casino in Los Angeles as the world collapses around them. Sadly, Matthias Schweighöfer’s prequel doesn’t have the same punch and no zombies too.&nbsp;</p>

<p>'Army of Thieves' focuses on one central character, Ludwig Dieter, the German safecracker who opened the Götterdämmerung safe in the zombie film. In the prequel, he tells the audience about the significance of the near-unbreakable safe Götterdämmerung and the three safes before it that have a mystical folk history. Created by Hans Wagner, a locksmith who couldn't cope with the death of his wife and son, makes four super safe as they take their names from the Ring Cycle: Das Rheingold, Die Walküre (The Valkyrie), Siegfried, and Götterdämmerung (Twilight of the Gods). In his story, Ludwig reveals how Hans locked himself inside one and had it dropped to the bottom of the ocean, almost like a finality to the cycle and serving as a tomb for him.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The story then drifts attention from the zombie-infested world as zombies haven't taken over Europe yet and are still pretty much limited to the US and these heists are happening in the former. It then becomes a heisty catch and run film with police and Interpol chasing these fraudsters.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Music is by Hans Zimmer and you feel it to the bones when the score starts to play to heighten the drama or the chase. The cinematography and layout is beautiful and scenic in every frame.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In all, the prequel fails to live up to the charm of Army of the Dead. Also, because you sorely miss the zombies. Army of Thieves review: A heist prequel sans zombies and adventure

<p>First look images from Zack Snyder’s prequel of ‘Army of the Dead’ are out and they look intriguing. It will be a live-action prequel to his hit Netflix zombie heist film.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Titled ‘Army of Thieves’, the film will follow the safecracker in his early days of thievery as he and his misfit crew of aspiring thieves are hired by a mysterious woman to pull off a heist. Army of Thieves' ensemble cast also stars Nathalie Emmanuel, Guz Khan, Ruby O. Fee, Stuart Martin and Jonathan Cohen.</p>

<p>There is also an animated prequel series in the pipeline. Zack had announced these projects at the time of Army of the Dead announcement and promotions. The first film in the Army universe was about a group of mercenaries hired to recover $200 million from a vault in the middle of a zombie-infested Las Vegas. The ensemble cast included Dave Bautista, Ella Purnell, Ana de la Reguera, Omari Hardwick, Matthias Schweighöfer, Tig Notaro and Hiroyuki Sanada.</p>

<p>‘Army of Thieves’ first look includes the return of Schweighöfer's Dieter and the new images offer a look at other cast members including Game of Thrones alum Emanuel.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A gun-toting group of mercenaries attempts to infiltrate the city to retrieve millions of dollars from a vault beneath the Strip, with just hours to spare before a nuclear bomb is dropped on Sin City's grisly residents.</p>

<p>Snyder, 55, dreamt up the idea for a "zombie heist" movie years earlier but rewrote it to centre on the relationship between tough-as-nails father Scott (Dave Bautista) and his estranged daughter Kate (Ella Purnell.)</p>

<p>"As a human being I have evolved from when I made 'Dawn,'" he told a virtual press conference.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"And just having the relationship I have with my children and being a dad... that part of the movie really became a lot more important to me than maybe it was 15 years ago."</p>

<p>He added: "Dave's character is trying to reconnect with his daughter... yes it's a zombie heist movie, but really in the end it's a character movie in a lot of ways."</p>

<p>Zack Snyder revealed the first character poster from his upcoming film ‘Army of the Dead’. Featuring Huma Qureshi in it, the director teased Huma’s first look as she plays the role of a mother to an estranged daughter.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The poster shows Huma Qureshi’s character Geeta holding a knife in her hand, and the intense look on her face suggests that her character means business.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Sharing the poster herself, Huma Qureshi wrote a note for her fans urging them to stay safe during the pandemic. She wrote, “My heart bleeds as my country and my fellow Indians fight personal loss, hurt, pain and devastation every day because of the Covid-19 pandemic. I stand alongside them in sharing every bit of it with them.”</p>
