Gravitas Global Headlines: Protests amid rising inflation in Argentina

Lionel Messi paid tribute to Argentina fans in what could be their last home game before November’s World Cup finals and said the raucous support in their 3-0 win over Venezuela was vital in preserving his happiness.

“I didn’t expect anything less of people, of the union between the Argentina public and this team,” Messi said after their comfortable win at Boca Juniors’ Bombonera stadium.

The seven-time Ballon d`Or winner has struggled at Paris Saint Germain since signing from Barcelona in August 2021 but he was as spritely as ever against a poor Venezuela side and the adoration of the home crowd was evident.

Argentina fans revere Messi, and all the more so since he led them to the Copa America in 2021 - their first major international honour in 28 years.

The feeling is mutual, with Messi leading his team mates on a victory lap around the ground and chanting and singing along with the 50,000 crowd.

“I’ve been happy here for a long time, since before we won the Copa America,” Messi said.

“People have shown that they love me and I am grateful for that. Everything flows naturally, that makes it easier on and off the pitch.”

Friday's game marked Messi's return to the national side after being rested for Argentina’s previous two World Cup qualifiers against Chile and Colombia.

He made several unsuccessful attempts at goal from free kicks outside the box but eventually score the third, a curious miskick meters from goal.

Messi chested down a pass from Angel Di Maria and although he didn’t connect cleanly it was enough to beat Venezuela's diving goalkeeper.

The 82nd minute goal came after earlier efforts from Nicolas Gonzalez and Di Maria, whose clever play and passes opened up a stuffy Venezuelan rearguard.

Argentina are one of four South American sides to have qualified for the Qatar finals, along with Brazil, Ecuador and Uruguay.

The final round of qualifying games next Tuesday will determine whether Peru, Colombia or Chile go into a playoff against a team from the Asian confederation.

Argentina's Senate on Thursday gave final approval to an agreement with the International Monetary Fund that restructures a $45 billion debt, clearing the country's short-term financial horizon but leaving a serious inflationary challenge.

The late-night vote greenlights the new credit program ironed out between Argentine officials and IMF staff as they sought to finalize the debt, the legacy of a record loan contracted in 2018 under former president Mauricio Macri.

Outside the Senate, several hundred people demonstrated, called by unions and leftist movements to oppose the restructuring.

Last week, the agreement won the approval of the Chamber of Deputies with a broad consensus between the center-left ruling coalition and the center-right opposition, a rarity in Argentina.

Faced with the spectre of a ruinous payment default if the agreement was not approved, the Senate greenlit it by a vote of 56 to 13, with three abstentions.

"It is the responsibility of our government to build certainty in a context of uncertainty," Economic Minister Martin Guzman, the deal's chief architect, said in defending the package before senators.

The agreement provides for a series of macroeconomic measures to control the country's chronic inflation (50.9 percent in 2021) and reduce its budget deficit of three percent of GDP last year until it is balanced in 2025.

Under the agreement, which must also be ratified by the IMF board of directors before it comes into force, the fund will monitor Argentina's progress regularly.

In 2018, under the government of center-right Macri, the IMF approved its biggest-ever loan of $57 billion to Argentina. The country received $44 billion of that amount.

Macri's successor, Alberto Fernandez, refused to accept the rest and sought to renegotiate repayment terms.

Payments of $19 billion and $20 billion were due this year -- a timeline the government considered impossible.

Argentina is just emerging from three years of economic recession and battling rising inflation and a high poverty rate.

The country recorded a 4.7 percent jump in its consumer price index in February compared to January, with a 7.5 percent rise in the cost of food.

Under the new deal -- the 13th that Buenos Aires has signed with the IMF since the return of democracy in 1983 -- repayments will be made from 2026 to 2034 after a grace period.

Argentina has committed to reducing its fiscal deficit from 3.0 percent of GDP today to 0.9 percent by 2024.

IMF spokesman Gerry Rice said the aim of the deal was to "reduce persistently high inflation" but warned of the challenges faced by the global economy following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

The parliament building was fenced off ahead of the Senate vote last week, following protests when the lower house approved the bill, with some demonstrators burning rubbish and throwing stones towards the building entrance.

A police officer was struck by a Molotov cocktail and some windows were hit with stones, including those at the offices of the Senate president and Vice President Cristina Kirchner.

Numerous secrets are waiting to be unearthed in the world. Well, literally as a new species of carnivorous dinosaur, which used to have short hands, has been discovered by scientists in northern Argentina.

The experts have found the skull base of the species assumed to be a relative of the abelisaurids.

The new development provides further information about the inhabitants of South America around million years ago during the Late Cretaceous.

Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) superstar Lionel Messi had contracted COVID-19 during the Christmas break last year. Messi has been forced into isolation and is due to return to Paris as he continues to stay at his home in Argentina, following all the necessary isolation protocols before returning back to the club.

An Argentine DJ has been facing massive backlash over Messi's recent positive COVID-19 test as he is being blamed by the fans of the PSG footballer for his infection. The DJ - Fer Palacio had last week posted a picture with Messi on his Instagram account where he had thanked the Messi family for inviting him to perform at their New Year's eve bash.

Messi, who is one of the four first-team players at PSG to test positive for COVID-19, had attended several parties during the festive break. He later tested positive for the contagious virus and had to extend his stay in Rosario. Palacio has since been heavily abused by fans on social media with some also labelling him a 'murderer'.

The Argentine DJ took to Instagram on Monday (January 3) to share a post denying the accusations of having infected Messi. He also revealed that he had undergone a COVID-19 test ahead of travelling to Uruguay this week and has tested negative.

"I am a trend on Twitter because Messi tested positive for Covid-19," he said on Instagram. "They relate this to me saying that I infected him. They have even called me 'murderer'," Palacio said in a video on his Instagram story.

"I have a lot of very bad private messages. Yesterday I got tested because I have to travel to Uruguay and I do not have Covid-19," he added.

Diego Maradona`s fans will have a chance to snap up memorabilia from the soccer star in an auction on Sunday, just over a year after his death, which will include his iconic cigars, a pair of BMW cars and a luxury villa that Maradona bought his parents.

The "10 auction," a reference to his jersey number with Argentina, which he led to World Cup triumph in 1986, is being held by his family to raise funds while legal questions over the distribution of the player's assets are resolved.

Maradona, widely recognized as one of the greater soccer players of all time, led a colorful and contentious life, which gained him a huge following of ardent fans but also saw him battle drug and alcohol addiction, along with ill health.

"The five children (recognized children of Maradona) through their lawyers agreed and it was possible to carry out this event in order to raise money. This is only to pay expenses," Adrian Mercado, head of the auction house, told Reuters. "There are many, many thing with nostalgic value."

The online auction will take place Sunday at 11 a.m. local time (0800 GMT). Maradona died on Nov. 25 last year at the age of 60 due to cardiac arrest, after suffering several health problems and having previously undergone cranial surgery.

Among the most expensive goods to be auctioned is a house from the 1980s that Maradona gave to his parents in the Villa Devoto neighborhood of Argentina`s capital, Buenos Aires. It will have a starting price of $900,000.

There are also a number of luxury cars, including a $225,000 BMW 750, which Maradona once drove onto a soccer pitch.

This is only to pay expenses," Adrian Mercado, head of the auction house, told Reuters. "There are many, many thing with nostalgic value." The online auction will take place Sunday at 11 a.m. local time (0800 GMT). The 87 lots include lower-value items such as hats worn by Maradona, pictures of the star including one with late Cuban leader Fidel Castro, whom he befriended, soccer shoes and T-shirts, a signed guitar, gym equipment, and a box of cigars. Pablo Tettamanti, deputy foreign minister, Argentina has called for a "better UN" and other multilateral organisations like WTO amid challenges like Covid crisis. The minister is in India for the sixth round of Foreign Office Consultations.

Speaking to WION Diplomatic Correspondent Sidhant Sibal, Tettamanti said, "We think whole machinery has to be revamped. We have to discuss this as there are different views and details have to be put somehow."

Foreign office consultations took place between Riva Ganguly Das, Secretary (East), India and Argentine deputy foreign minister on Wednesday.

According to MEA, "Both countries recalled their mutual assistance during Covid and reiterated their joint resolve to continue mutual cooperation in their fight against the pandemic and post-pandemic recovery."

WION: What is the key focus of your Delhi visit?

Pablo Tettamanti: I came for our bilateral regular meetings with the foreign affairs ministry of India. We have a strategic association and created a mechanism by which ministry of foreign affairs meet regularly. Covid had made it very difficult. We had a meeting last year, which was virtual and I took advantage of the opening up to come to India to meet my counterpart Ambassador Riva Ganguly Das and was honoured to meet EAM Jaishankar and discuss our bilateral relationship.

WION: How will you characterise the relationship between the two countries?

Pablo Tettamanti: Officially, we have a strategic association but it goes beyond that. There is a common view of many of the global issues and agenda, and we have same kind of approach too. It has been true in different periods of history, Argentina and India have always had a common vision as to how we believe things have to be solved. There are issues in which we have to find common ground but in general, we have an approach, which is very similar and I think that is the basis. We could see that in discussions.

WION: What is the key outcome of dialogue in Delhi?

Pablo Tettamanti: We have a series of mechanism that we have to put again, moving on. We will have meetings to discuss this issue but to be more specific, we have already been able to discuss MoUs on mining, which should show results in investments to the benefits of the two sides. We have been discussing how we can improve trade, possibility of cooperation in scientific and technological field, how to respond to Covid, having exchanges, etc.

WION: How has been the cooperation to deal with Covid and people-to-people movement?

Pablo Tettamanti: We are accepting international travellers who are fully vaccinated. We have been working on similar vaccines, both in India and Argentina. Many people, including myself have received Covishield vaccine so this is something that is naturally recognised. There is paper work, which is normal things, PCR test, etc. But all in all, we are going back to normalisation. In both countries, tourism was hit hard by Covid. But it is also something both countries plan to increase, as it crucial to recovery on economic side.

WION: Engagement at multilateral organisations like UN?

Pablo Tettamanti: Before Covid and afterwards, we have been talking about multilateralism. We think whole machinery is to be revamped. We have to discuss this. Though there are different views and details have to be somehow put in proportion and see how it works out. We have to work for better United Nations, WTO, etc. We both are members of the G20 and have voiced the concern of the emerging economies. We believe there is a possibility of our points of views being discussed and heard. With India, we have a common approach.

WION: Your views on the Indo-Pacific vision? Was there any conversation in Delhi?

Pablo Tettamanti: We have been exchanging views on how we can respond to challenges we face. We have seen the common ground, we believe in dialogue, human rights, negations and we need to put terrorism behind us. Realities are different in one region and another. Latin America faces more Pacific situation but approach is the same and we have exchanged views.

Have to work for a better UN, says Argentina's deputy foreign minister during India visit

Mavys Alvarez, a Cuban woman who had a relationship with late soccer star Diego Maradona two decades ago, told a news conference on Monday that the Argentine player had raped her when she was a teenager and "stolen her childhood."

Alvarez, now 37, gave testimony last week to an Argentine Ministry of Justice court that is investigating her allegations of trafficking against Maradona`s former entourage, linked to events when she was 16.
Maradona, widely considered one of the greatest ever soccer stars, died a year ago on Nov. 25, 2020. The complaint relates to a journey Alvarez took to Argentina with Maradona in 2001, when he was around 40 and she was 16.

Alvarez said that she first met the soccer star shortly before the trip, when he was in Cuba to undergo drug addiction treatment. At a news conference in Buenos Aires, Alvarez said Maradona had raped her in the clinic in Havana where he was staying, while her mother was in the next room.

"He covers my mouth, he rapes me, I don`t want to think about it too much," Alvarez said. "I stopped being a girl, all my innocence was stolen from me. It`s hard. You stop living the innocent things that a girl of that age has to experience."

Matias Morla, Maradona`s lawyer before his death, did not respond to a request for comment. Reuters could not identify other legal representatives for Maradona in the case. Alvarez has previously described the relationship in media interviews as consensual, but also said that Maradona had at least on one occasion forced himself upon her.
She said that her family had only allowed a relationship with the star to happen, despite the large age gap, because of Maradona`s friendship with the late Cuban President Fidel Castro.

"My family would never have accepted it if the Cuban government had not been involved," she said. "They were forced in another way to accept a relationship that was not good for them, or for anyone."
Cuba`s government did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Alvarez said she had filed the complaint "in order to help all women, all victims of trafficking, of crime," she said. "To be able to help them in whatever way I can. That`s my idea."

She said it was hard to be back in Argentina, where Maradona remains a hero to many. "It`s hard to be in his country, to see that he is everywhere, he is an idol and at the same time everything I remember about him as a person feels ugly," she said.

Argentine President Alberto Fernandez has called for dialogue with the opposition following Sunday's midterm elections, with projections showing his coalition has lost control of Congress.

In the run-up to the election, there was widespread discontent over the state of the economy, which has been in recession since 2018 and was hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Based on projections of over 90 per cent of votes counting, Fernandez's Frente de Todos (Everyone's Front) coalition, which already held the majority in the lower house of Congress, looks set to drop from 41 to 35 seats in the 72-member Senate.

For the first time since Argentina's return to democracy in 1983, Peronism - a left-leaning movement based on former president Juan Peron that now covers a broad spectrum of political perspectives - would not hold a majority in the Senate.

In order to pass laws or make key appointments, including to the judiciary, Garcia is likely to have to make concessions to the opposition during the last two years of his tenure.

"We need to prioritise national agreements if we want to resolve the challenges we face," said Fernandez, adding that he would approach opposition groups to try to find common ground.

"An opposition that is responsible and open to dialogue is a patriotic opposition."

In Sunday's elections, half of the seats in the Chamber of Deputies and a third of Senate seats were up for grabs.

According to Interior Minister Wado de Pedro, the turnout in the compulsory elections was between 71 and 72 per cent.

In his recent primaries, Fernandez suffered a bruising defeat, picking up just 33 per cent of the vote, compared with 37 per cent for the main opposition group, Juntos por el Cambio (Together for Change), led by Macri.

"These next two years are going to be difficult," Macri said Sunday while assuring voters that his coalition would "act with great responsibility."

Fernandez "will have to negotiate law by law," said Raul Aragon, a political scientist at the National University of La Matanza.

The opposition, however, is expected to be open to talks.

"It won't serve them to not engage in dialogue, and appear anti-democratic" before the presidential elections in 2023, Aragon said.

Thousands of people gathered in downtown Buenos Aires on Sunday as they celebrated the progress made in Argentina by LGBTQ and women's rights groups. Even though it was a demonstration, it had a festive atmosphere.

However, the head of the state anti-discrimination office, Ornella Infante, told reporters, "We celebrate the victories obtained, but we also demand Congress deal with" trans rights and anti-discrimination bills that have been proposed.

People at the march were seen carrying signs that read "Missing Teruel." They were referring to Tehuel de la Torre, a 22-year-old trans man who disappeared in March when he left home for a job interview. The demonstrators demanded more information on his whereabouts.

As a part of the demonstrations, people danced in the streets and musicians performed. Various people wearing elaborate costumes held a parade of floats. This way, the people celebrated a wide range of identities.

Marcela Romerom, ATTTA leader, said, "They are 30 years of struggles, resistance, achievements such as the equal marriage law and gender identity law."

Argentine President Alberto Fernandez also took part in the march. He wrote on Twitter, "The LGBTI+ flag flies all over the country with great reasons to celebrate. A collective that has our commitment to continue working for a more just, free and equal society."

In July, a presidential decree made Argentina the first country in Latin America to allow people to indicate gender beyond the binary on their national identification documents, by ticking an "X."

Celebrating the decree, President Alberto Fernandez during a ceremony at the capital's Bicentennial Museum said that "the state should not care about a citizen's sexual orientation.". Talking about the importance of respecting identities beyond gender, he added that there are "a thousand ways to love, be loved, and be happy".

As a part of the demonstrations, people danced in the streets and musicians performed. Various people wearing elaborate costumes held a parade of floats. This way, the people celebrated a wide range of identities. Argentine President Alberto Fernandez also took part in the march. He wrote on Twitter, "The LGBTI+ flag flies all over the country with great reasons to celebrate. A collective that has our commitment to continue working for a more just, free and equal society." In July, a presidential decree made Argentina the first country in Latin America to allow people to indicate gender beyond the binary on their national identification documents, by ticking an "X." Celebrating the decree, President Alberto Fernandez during a ceremony at the capital's Bicentennial Museum said that "the state should not care about a citizen's sexual orientation.". Talking about the importance of respecting identities beyond gender, he added that there are "a thousand ways to love, be loved, and be happy".

The World Marine Foundation on Tuesday said that rescue teams were successful in saving two stranded whales along Atlantic coast of Argentina.

The whales were stranded on a beach in seaside resort town of La Lucila del Mar. The town is 220 miles (360 kilometres south of Argentina's capital Buenos Aires.

"The first, which was stranded on Sunday, was a juvenile female humpback whale, 32 feet (9.8 meters) long and approximately eight tons in weight," the conservation group said in a statement.

The second fish, which "is a male of the same species, 28 feet long, and approximately seven tons, appeared Monday night," the foundation added.

About 30 people participated in the rescue. This included local residents, marine conservationists, Civil Defense members, coast guard officers, firefighters, volunteers and beach lifeguards.

Their collective efforts allowed the animals to return to the sea, the statement said.

"Upon arriving to survey the first animal's situation, primary support efforts were immediately carried out, including assuring the individual's position allowed it to breathe, keeping its pectoral fins underwater in order to stabilize its body temperature as much as possible," the organization said.

The whole procedure was "difficult," the group said. At one point, the force of the waves knocked the whale over so that the mammal's blowhole was underwater and it was unable to breathe.

"Thanks to a quick action, they were able to turn it over," said Sergio Rodriguez Heredia, a biologist at the World Marine Foundation's Rescue Center.

Rescuers tucked cables underneath the whale's body -- connected to a huge backhoe tractor crane -- hoping to free it from the sandy sea floor.

The workers noticed the second whale overnight, seeing it was in a "good state of health," said Augusto Giachetti, director of the Civil Defense's coastal division.

They waited until dawn to begin the second whale's rescue.

"It was necessary to realign the animal, using the assistance of a backhoe and special cables to move it a big enough distance that it was able to float," he Giachetti said.

Once the whale realized it was able to float, it swam out to sea.

Two beached humpback whales rescued in Argentina

Six Argentina players and two staff have been kicked out of the Rugby Championship for breaching its health rules after taking an unauthorised day trip to the New South Wales resort of Byron Bay, competition organisers said on Thursday. The Rugby Championship, which also includes Australia, South Africa and New Zealand, has been operating under strict biosecurity protocols in the northeastern state of Queensland due to COVID-19.

Governing body SANZAAR said the Pumas group had broken the competition`s rules by travelling across the Queensland state border with New South Wales to visit the popular tourist destination on Wednesday. "SANZAAR is very disappointed that such a breach has occurred given the clear rules that are in place to ensure the health and safety of all players and staff, and compliance with all relevant health orders," it said in a statement.

Argentina have now been left without back row enforcer Pablo Matera and team mates Sebastián Cancelliere, Joaquín Díaz Bonilla, Felipe Ezcurra, Santiago Medrano and Santiago Socino for their final match against Australia on the Gold Coast on Saturday. The Argentina rugby union (UAR) said team manager Lucas Chioccarelli and video analyst Rodrigo Martínez were also on the day trip.

The group tried to re-enter Queensland but were turned back by police for lacking required documentation and had to stay at a hotel in New South Wales overnight. SANZAAR said they would remain in the state until rejoining the squad on Sunday before leaving Australia. "All are in perfect health, staying in a hotel in the area, waiting for their condition to be resolved," the UAR said, adding it was a "top priority" to bring them back to camp.
"In parallel, an internal process has begun to clarify what happened and determine the corresponding responsibilities."

`CLEAR AND OBVIOUS`

The four Rugby Championship teams have been restricted to their hotels and training as Queensland authorities scramble to stamp out a small outbreak of COVID-19, having been largely free of the novel coronavirus for months.
Queensland`s border is effectively closed to New South Wales, which has been dealing with a larger outbreak centred in Sydney. New Zealand coach Ian Foster said the COVID rules were "clear and obvious" to his team.
"It`s very transparent to us that there’s a border between Queensland and New South Wales," Foster told reporters.
After five straight defeats in the tournament, Argentina will head into their final match short of personnel but Australia coach Dave Rennie said they could not be taken lightly.

"There’s plenty of motivating factors for them," said Rennie. Argentina`s recent trips to Australia have been plagued by controversy. After the high of beating the All Blacks for the first time in last year`s Tri-Nations, the UAR stripped Matera of the captaincy and sanctioned Socino and team mate Guido Petti after revelations the trio had posted racist comments on social media between 2011-13. In this year`s Rugby Championship, coach Mario Ledesma complained his team had been "disrespected" after being left out of a captains` photo-shoot and said no one cared about the welfare of his players, who have been unable to play a test at home in two years due to COVID-19.

Argentina's president Alberto Fernandez announced a new cabinet on Friday in a bid to smother a political crisis that pitted him bitterly against his vice president this week after an electoral defeat in legislative primaries.

The reshuffle came one day after Vice President Cristina Kirchner wrote Fernandez to demand one, deepening the crisis gripping the ruling coalition after their poor showing in the weekend primaries.

Juan Manzur, governor of Tucuman province, will take over as chief of staff from Santiago Cafiero, one of Kirchner's most controversial officials, the presidency announced.

Cafiero instead became foreign minister, replacing Felipe Sola, who is in Mexico for the summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States, or CELAC, which begins on Saturday.

Due to the crisis, Fernandez canceled his visit to Mexico for the summit and won't attend the United Nations General Assembly in New York next week.

The new ministers joining the cabinet, who will be sworn in on Monday, are Anibal Fernandez (Security), Julian Dominguez (Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries), Juan Perzyck (Education) and Daniel Filmus (Science and Technology).

Juan Ross was also appointed as the new Secretary of Communication and Press, replacing Juan Pablo Biondi, whom the vice president had openly rejected and accused of organizing "off-the-record operations."

The government of Fernandez and Kirchner, herself a former president, has been going through its most acute crisis yet this week after the weekend's legislative primary elections, in which the ruling Frente de Todos coalition won only 31 per cent of the votes at the national level.

These results put the ruling party's majority in the Senate at risk for the parliamentary by-elections on November 14, as well as any majority in the Chamber of Deputies, with two years of the Fernandez-Kirchner mandate still to run.

The crisis broke out earlier this week, after Interior Minister Eduardo 'Wado' de Pedro and four cabinet ministers offered to step down after a poor showing for Frente de Todos in weekend primary elections. The officials were all close to Kirchner and the move was seen as her attempt to put pressure on Fernandez to reshuffle the cabinet.

"Do you seriously believe that it is not necessary, after such a defeat, to publicly present the resignations and that those in charge facilitate the president to reorganize his government?" Kirchner wrote to Fernandez in a letter, in which she also criticized those who "cling to their chairs."

In the end, De Pedro and the other ministers kept their posts.

The center-right coalition Juntos, of ex-president Mauricio Macri, obtained 40 percent of the votes cast nationwide on Sunday.

It critically made great strides in the province of Buenos Aires, the country's largest electoral district and considered a bastion of Fernandez's party.

Fernandez took power from the incumbent Macri in 2019.

Public discontent with his government has been growing in a country in recession since 2018 and a GDP drop of 9.9 percent last year amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Argentina has one of the world's highest inflation rates, at 29 percent from January to July this year, and a poverty rate of 42 percent.
