FIFA World Cup: Lionel Messi to achieve major milestone in Argentina's opener vs Saudi Arabia

When Lionel Messi calmly put the ball in the net from the penalty spot against Saudi Arabia on Tuesday, it seemed business as usual for Argentina. The Latin American giants featured in almost every list of teams favoured to win the FIFA World Cup 2022 trophy and against a side ranked 51st in the world, Messi & Co were heavily favoured to run riot. However, it seemed like no one gave Saudi Arabia the script as the Asian powerhouse produced a performance to remember with goals from Saleh Al-Shehri and Salem Al-Dawsari guiding them to the most memorable win in their history.

RECORDS AND CONTROVERSIES

With a forward line boasting of mega stars like Messi, Angel Di Maria and Lautaro Martinez, Argentina had no difficulties in controlling the game from the very first kick. They kept attacking the Saudi defense with quick passing and the breakthrough finally came as Saud Abdulhamid wrestling Leandro Parades to the ground inside the penalty area. Messi had no difficulties in opening the account for his side and becoming the first Argentine player to score four goals in four World Cups.

However, it was the penalty decision was not without its controversies. It once again sparked the VAR’s inconsistency when it comes to deciding penalty decisions in case of player scuffles. Portuguese legend Figo compared the foul to a similar one committed against Harry Maguire during England’s game against Iran and even went on to say that it is completely fair in a “contact sport”.

TRAPPED AT THE BACK

The goal further bolstered Argentina’s confidence and over the next 30 minutes, the ball ended up in the Saudi net three times. However, none of them officially counted as the Argentine attackers were judged offside every time. While the press from Argentina seemed almost constant, Saudi Arabia stuck to the strategy that has become a trademark of manager Herve Renard.

Despite conceding an early goal, the four Saudi defenders - Saud Abdulhamid, Hassan Tambakti, Ali Al-Bulayhi and Yasser Al-Shahrani – kept holding a very high line and that meant the opposition forwards were constantly kept in doubt regarding their positioning at the start of an attack. The plan worked as Argentina were left frustrated as they were caught offside eight times within 45 minutes.

TEN MINUTES OF GENIUS

With Argentina going all out for the second goal, the Saudi attackers started finding spaces against the full backs Nahuel Molina and Nicolas Tagliafico. There were a couple of tame attempts in the first half, but Al Hilal striker Shehri suddenly found himself in an advantageous position against center back Christian Romero. The striker successfully went past Romero from the left and a well-placed shot was enough to beat Emiliano Martinez and spark wild celebrations among the fans.

The Saudi fans seemed to have found their voice for the first time in the game and the sound almost felt like a catalyst for their national team. Five minutes later, the unthinkable happened. Dawsari received the ball on the edge of the penalty box and was able to dodge past two Argentina defenders. With De Paul lunging for a tackle, he took a curling right foot shot and as if in slow motion, it sailed past Martinez’s outstretched hands and landed in the bottom corner of the goal.

OVERDEPENDANCE AND PURE GRIT

This was not supposed to happen, and Argentina seemed totally unprepared for this situation. The overdependence on the attacking trio meant that nearly all attacks had a set pattern and with Saudi players sitting deep, almost all passings channels were affected. Both Paredes and De Paul failed to make proper runs into the Saudi penalty box and although the introduction of Marcos Acuna in place of Tagliafico did boost the wing play, Argentina faced a new challenge - Mohammed Al-Owais.

The Saudi goalkeeper did not have much to do in the first half despite Argentina launching multiple attacks. Officially, the first shot on goal for Argentina came just before the 60-minute mark in the game if we do not count Messi’s penalty. The compact setting on the central defence meant that Argentina were forced to rely mainly on crosses and headers to attack his goal but Al-Owais was up to the challenge. Both Messi and substitute Julian Alvarez had chances to level the score towards the end of the match, but the Saudi goalkeeper held his ground and ended up making four crucial saves.

It was, by no stretch, a bad performance by Argentina. However, in front of the discipline and grit of Saudi Arabia, Messi and Co seemed almost clueless while trying to come up a viable Plan B.

FIFA World Cup 2022: Offside traps and pure grit - How Saudi Arabia stunned Argentina and the world

The FIFA World Cup 2022 edition is set to get underway on November 20 in Qatar. Ahead of the World Cup, a lot of updates from Qatar have made the headlines. On Thursday (November 17), a new development has come forward that Lionel Messi and his Argentina team mates have said no to five-star luxury and will lodge at student halls at the Qatar University, Doha. They have done so to enjoy the traditional beef barbecues during the showpiece event in the Middle East.

While players from other teams checked-in in city's expensive hotels, Messi and his teammates have headed straight to the student halls of the Qatar University, as per a report in Daily Mail. It is to be noted that the decision was taken after the Argentine football officials came to a conclusion that living in student halls will enable them to organise mouth-watering asados, traditional barbecues, etc. In addition, a special asado chef will be available for the players to ensure that beef and other preferred meals are cooked as it would be in Argentina.

'We want to make them feel at home while they are in Qatar'

In this regard, a source from the Argentina Football Association told Mail Online, "We visited the campus several times and chose it because not only does it have great facilities but it also has open air space for asados. This is very important to the players and Argentines in general, it’s part of our culture. We want to make them feel at home while they are in Qatar and the best way to do this is to make sure that they get a taste of home while focusing on the football."

He added: "You could say other teams have opted to stay in more luxurious accommodation but our team is the best in the world which also deserves the best beef. Our focus is to win the World Cup, not the quality of the hotel we are staying in."

FIFA WC: Messi & Co. say no to five-star luxury for student halls to relish traditional beef barbecues

A World Cup-related auction will take place in London on Wednesday (November 16) where items on sale include the ball Diego Maradona scored his 'Hand of God' goal with against England in the 1986 tournament. The football that was at the feet - and hand - of Maradona as he shocked the world with acts of both brazen gamesmanship and breathtaking skill in Mexico 36 years ago has been put up for auction and is expected to sell for at least 2.5 million pounds ($2.8 million).

The ball in question is from the 1986 World Cup quarter-final between Argentina and England, in which Maradona scored six minutes into the second half by sneakily punching the ball over England goalkeeper Peter Shilton into the net, a goal he said afterward had been helped by the "Hand of God".

Just four minutes later he dribbled from his own half past a number of England players to score a sublime second that regularly tops polls as the greatest goal in World Cup history. The ball is being sold by Tunisian referee Ali Bin Nasser, who officiated the match. The auction will be conducted by auctioneers Graham Budd.

The FIFA World Cup is set to kick off next month, on November 20, in Qatar. It is to be noted that Qatar will be the first Arab state to host the World Cup and, hence, the excitement of the football fans knows no boundaries. Ahead of the mega event's commencement, Argentina captain Lionel Messi picked his favourites and has not named his own side.

Messi, who has announced that he will be playing his World Cup, will be eager to take his side to the coveted title in Qatar. However, when asked to pick his favourites, the 35-year-old has named Neymar-starrer Brazil and France as the two of the strongest contenders.

"We always say the same great teams... but, if I have to choose, Brazil and France are the two great candidates to win the World Cup. They've had the same group (of players) for a long time, working well," Messi said during an interview with DirectTV Sports.

"France, aside from the last Euros when they were eliminated (in the last 16) and did badly, they have some impressive players. They have a clear idea and the same coach (Didier Deschamps). Brazil is a bit the same (under Tite)," he added.

Talking about Argentina, the Messi-starrer have also been in good form in the recent past. They are heading into the marquee tournament with an unbeaten streak of 35 games (since 2019). In fact, they are just two more matches away to surpass Italy's tally to remain unbeaten for the most number of matches.

In last year, Messi-led Argentina had won the Copa America, beating Brazil to clinch the continental trophy. Hence, Messi & Co. also have the winning momentum under their belt and will look to go the distance this time around in the World Cup. In last edition of the World Cup, Argentina had lost to eventual winners France, 4-3, to bow out in the Round of 16.

FIFA World Cup: Not Argentina! Lionel Messi names his favourites for showpiece event in Qatar

The ball that Diego Maradona used to score his infamous "Hand of God" World Cup goal for Argentina against England in 1986 will go under the hammer next month and could fetch up to £3 million. Bidding will start on November 16 but prospective buyers can register online from October 28, London-based Graham Budd Auctions said, adding it anticipates the ball to sell for £2.5-£3 million (up to $3.4 million).

"With the history surrounding the ball, we are expecting this lot to be hugely popular when it comes up for auction," Graham Budd, chair of the auction house, said in a statement. The 1986 quarter-final between Argentina and England saw a heated build-up because of political tensions following the Falklands war and came to be defined by two contrasting goals scored by the late Maradona.

For the first one, Maradona ran into the box, rose with England goalkeeper Peter Shilton and punched the ball into the net. He later said the goal had been scored "a little with the head of Maradona, a little with the hand of God".

The second came just four minutes later as Maradona sped past five English defenders and Shilton to score the "Goal of the Century", according to a 2002 FIFA poll. Argentina won the grudge match 2-1 after referee Ali Bin Nasser let Maradona's controversial first goal stand, and the team went on to win the World Cup.

"This ball is part of international football history, it feels like the right time to be sharing it with the world," said Bin Nasser, the owner of the ball. In May, the jersey Maradona wore in the quarter-final sold at auction for nearly $9.3 million, more than twice the value predicted by Sotheby's.

Every culture wants to memorialize its dead. Every family needs the missing to be identified to reach closure. Perhaps that is why a wartime mass grave offends something so deep in the human conscience. Little can be said with certainty about the hundreds of bodies discovered last week at Izium, in a pine forest in northeastern Ukraine, other than that they are the beginning of a long story.

Restoring human dignity to the most dehumanising of scenes; heaped anonymous corpses, the reduction of lives to nothing, and the stench of abandonment is a painstaking forensic endeavour.

For many months, perhaps years, the work will continue to match DNA samples, collate the scraps, establish the cause of death, and determine what crimes may have been committed by the Russian forces who fled a week ago.

Any mass grave from Bosnia to Rwanda, from Argentina to Guatemala demands of our humanity the reconstitution of the individual lives ended there.

“On one side in Britain you see the Queen’s dignified burial and on the other this mass grave stemming from mass violence,” said Anjli Parrin, the Kenyan deputy director of the Human Rights Clinic at Columbia Law School. “They are two extremes that remind us that the idea of someone missing, buried anonymously, is a violation of a fundamental instinct to honor the dead.”

When President Vladimir V. Putin’s Russia retreats, evidence of possible atrocities surfaces. That now seems to be a pattern of Moscow’s war in Ukraine, most recently in Izium. The post-apocalyptic scene last spring in Bucha, near Kyiv, of dozens of corpses arrayed in black plastic bags beneath weeping birches laden with mistletoe has proved to be the prelude to another troubling landscape.

The exhumation of a burial site in a pine forest, after more than five months of Russian occupation of Izium, has revealed one mass grave of Ukrainian Army soldiers, seventeen of them, according to an inscription on a cross. There were also 445 mainly unmarked individual graves. Dmytro Lubinets, the Ukrainian Parliament’s commissioner for human rights, spoke of “genocide of the Ukrainian population.”

But genocide requiring the “intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnicial, racial or religious group, as such,” in the words of the 1948 Genocide Convention is not easily proved. Other international crimes, including crimes against humanity and extrajudicial executions, may also have occurred.

It took nine years for the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia to rule that the 1995 Serbian killing of more than 8,000 Bosnian men and boys around Srebrenica constituted genocide. This was the worst single massacre in Europe since 1945.
It was also a massacre foretold.

For any correspondent covering the war there, as I did, it was clear for a long time that the so-called “safe areas” of Bosnia under the protection of the United Nations were no such thing. The blue helmets of UN troops had become a symbol of impotence. The horror, when it came, was merely a re-enactment, on a different scale, of the eviction and slaughter of the Muslim population of Bosnia by Serbian forces three years earlier, at the start of the war in 1992.

Izium, if the war in Ukraine endures and festers (even for years as seems possible), is unlikely to be the last site of myriad graves lost in the forest. Nor are the horrors emerging in Ukraine new to a nation with a poignant history in this regard, including at Babyn Yar, the ravine in Kyiv where more than 33,000 Jews were massacred in 1941 by the Nazis.

My colleague in Bosnia, Elizabeth Neuffer of the Boston Globe, who was later killed in Iraq, wrote of the Cerska mass grave 27 kilometres northwest of Srebrenica in “Crimes of War,” a book edited by Roy Gutman and David Rieff:

“The corpses were dressed in civilian clothes. They had gunshot wounds to the back of their heads. Their decaying hands were bound behind their back.” She continued: “Each part of the human skeleton, some two hundred bones and thirty-two teeth, has its tale to tell.”

They will come to Izium, the forensic pathologists, the ballistic experts, the forensic odontologists examining teeth, the anthropologists, the radiologists, the police investigators, the national and international authorities intent on establishing what violence produced those graves. Establishing the cause and manner and circumstance of death in war is hard. That much I have learned.

“It’s not just the collection of evidence that is difficult, it is preserving it,” Ms Parrin, who has been working on mass graves in the Central African Republic, said. “You are labeling and numbering and photographing under enormous stress and trauma, and you have to demonstrate the chain of custody...who passed what to whom and who locked it in which office and when.”
It’s easy to get something wrong. Mistaken identity is not unusual.

Before Bosnia, there was Argentina, which I covered in the mid-1980s. Buenos Aires was awakening then to the scope of a national nightmare. Every conversation seemed to end in tears as parents, haunted by desperate imaginings, recalled their children who had been “disappeared” by the military junta. That many of the tens of thousands of “desaparecidos” had been dumped from planes into the South Atlantic between 1976 and 1983 was not yet known.

So did the Argentine military turn “disappear” into a transitive verb and the ocean into a mass grave. I sat and listened. That’s what journalists do: listen through silence, awaiting a clue, the revealing epiphany, the face that crumples like a dynamited building.
The grief of bereaved parents was overwhelming. Sudden disappearance was too much to bear. There was no farewell and no adequate means to mourn. This twisted minds toward desperate acts.

I took away the conviction that for the bereaved, disappearance into an anonymous mass grave turns every living being into someone with a possible resemblance to a lost child, whose death can never be entirely accepted.

Before Argentina, there was Lithuania. My grandmother came from Zagare, a small Lithuanian town renowned for its cherries. The last Jew there, Aizikas Mendelsonas, died in 2011. When he was born in 1922, there were almost 2,000 Jews in Zagare, with its seven synagogues.

The Nazis ended all that after pushing into Lithuania in June 1941. On October 2, 1941, the Jews of Zagare were ordered into the main square before being taken into the woods for execution.

In 1944, the Soviet Red Army, having fought its way into Lithuania, examined a mass grave in the forest outside Zagare and found 2,402 corpses (530 men, 1,223 women, 625 children, and 24 babies), as I discovered in researching a book on my family. A sign in the woods points to the “Graves of the Victims of the Jewish Genocide,” now also commemorated by a monument on the main square.

The hypothetical European fate of my family, had they not left Zagare in time, was to die nameless in a nameless ditch. Perhaps that is why mass graves have haunted me.

These things linger, subliminally or not. Two decades after Srebrenica, a French photographer, Adrien Selbert, showed me photographs of the town, now gathered in a book called “Srebrenica, From Night to Night.” They captured a town overcome by the weight of the past, unable to shake it off, gripped by a kind of sullen idleness. Stray dogs wander empty streets. Neon signs and streetlights glare into vacancy.

It was clear that all the bullets the Serbs emptied into their male victims constituted equal violence upon their female survivors, who were left with the hurt of the unsayable.

What Russia has done, in Izium and elsewhere, is forge a Ukrainian national identity that is more powerful than ever, along with wounds that will be refracted down through the generations.

The singular offense of the mass grave: Story of Izium and beyond

Fernando Sabag Montiel, the alleged attacker accused of trying to shoot Argentine vice president Cristina Kirchner at point-blank range last week, apparently planned the attack with his girlfriend.

Fernando Sabag Montiel, the alleged attacker accused of trying to shoot Argentine vice president Cristina Kirchner at point-blank range last week, apparently planned the attack with his girlfriend. Kirchner is the former president and current vice president. The shocking new development in the investigation came after the preliminary charges were filed by a judge, the local media reported Wednesday (September 7). According to the Telam news agency, Judge Maria Eugenia Capuchetti said in an indictment that the alleged shooter and his girlfriend, Brenda Uliarte, are both in custody. They are accused of trying to assassinate Kirchner "with planning and prior agreement". The assassination attempt had happened when Kirchner was mingling with supporters outside her home last Thursday night. The 69-year-old survived the horrible attack when a gun brandished by Sabag Montiel failed to fire. Immediately after the attack, he was taken into custody and a video of the incident went viral on various social media platforms. Here's what we know about the girlfriend of Sabag Montiel Sabag Montiel has not revealed his motivation behind the attack. The 35-year-old is a Brazilian national who has been living in Argentina since his youth. Meanwhile, his 23-year-old girlfriend was arrested Sunday night in a Buenos Aires train station. In the aftermath of the attack, she said in a television interview that she had not seen Sabag Montiel for two days. However, according to judicial sources cited by the local media, analysis of video surveillance images has since shown that they were both at the scene of the attack that evening. Argentina: Man, his girlfriend 'planned' attack on vice president Cristina Kirchner

The pneumonia outbreak in Argentina, which has killed four people, has been linked to Legionnaires' disease. With coronavirus ruled out and other tests coming back negative, the cause had been a mystery until now.

From shortness of breath to muscle and abdominal pains, the cases of the disease have been connected to a private health clinic in the northwestern city of San Miguel de Tucuman.

Noting that the clinic's climate-control systems were being checked, provincial health minister Luis Medina Ruiz said that "toxic and environmental causes" could not be ruled out.

Provincial officials said that out of the seven symptomatic cases that have been identified, four have been hospitalised and three have been given respiratory assistance.

The latest cases were that of a 70-year-old woman who had undergone surgery in the clinic and a 48-year-old man with underlying health problems.

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the legionella bacteria is found naturally in freshwater environments but can grow and spread in building water systems.

Senior citizens over the age of 50 with certain conditions can be particularly at risk as per Argentina's health minister Carla Vizzotti.

Describing the bacterial infection as "aggressive," president of the Tucuman provincial medical college Hector Sale added that it is not normally transmitted person-to-person.

Following an outbreak at a Philadelphia convention of the American Legion of veterans, Legionnaires' disease was discovered and named in 1976.

× The latest cases were that of a 70-year-old woman who had undergone surgery in the clinic and a 48-year-old man with underlying health problems. A mysterious respiratory illness has reportedly gripped Argentina due to which nine people have died and six are hospitalised. Authorities said the disease is reminiscent of pneumonia, with some drawing parallels to Covid outbreak.

The health ministry has spotted this ailment in northwest Tucumán rural area, wherein people have been infected by the mysterious respiratory illness, including eight medical staff at the same clinic, according to The Times.

According to reports, since Monday, three people have died, while a 70-year-old woman was admitted for a surgical procedure at the clinic.

The province’s health minister, Luis Medina Ruiz, has ruled out Covid, flu and influenza type A and B.

“What these patients have in common is the severe respiratory condition with bilateral pneumonia and compromise in [X-ray] images very similar to COVID, but that is ruled out,” Ruiz was quoted as saying.

Authorities have sent the samples of the unknown virus to the Malbran Institute in Buenos Aires and Argentina’s National Administration of Health Laboratories and Institutes.

They are also examining the water and air conditioning units in the area to test for possible poisoning.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday, the European Centre for Disease Control’s epidemic intelligence team said that it has been monitoring the cases, whereas scientists at the World Health Organisation have also begun tracking the situation.

Professor Devi Sridhar, chair of global health at Edinburgh University and author of “Preventable: How a Pandemic Changed The World & How to Stop the Next One,” told the Telegraph, “It’s obviously concerning but we still need key information on transmission and hopefully [on the] underlying cause.”

Paula Estrada, an Argentinean who was 41 at the time of her diagnosis with breast cancer in 2009, made the decision that she would not only survive the illness but also avoid having her long golden hair destroyed by chemotherapy.

In order to prevent hair loss and prevent sports-related injuries, graphic artist Estrada set out to construct a temporary helmet out of ice packs at her house in Buenos Aires.

The cold from the helmet constricting blood vessels and assisting in preventing the chemotherapy medications from reaching Estrada's hair follicles were two ways her gadget functioned.

India and Argentina have agreed to firm up ties whilst simultaneously agreeing to increase engagement in defence and trade. The Latin American country has shown interest in India's indigenously developed TEJAS fighter aircraft, manufactured under the 'Make in India' campaign for its Air Force.

"EAM, acknowledging Argentine interest in the Made in India TEJAS fighter aircrafts for Argentine Air Force, highlighted importance of the proposal in enhancing strategic quotient of the bilateral relationship." read the joint press statement released after the Joint Commission Meeting (JCM).

The JCM took place between India's external affairs minister Dr S Jaishankar and Argentina's foreign minister Santiago Cafiero. It is pertinent to note that apart from Argentina, countries such as Australia, Egypt, the USA, Indonesia, and the Philippines have also shown interest in LCA aircraft which is manufactured by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). However, Argentina is the first country in Latin America to show interest in Tejas, which is a single-engine, lightweight supersonic fighter.

Both countries have also agreed to "request the Central Banks to carry out studies for the development of a payment mechanism in local currencies" so that trade between the two countries can transpire without the use of a third currency. This development comes in the backdrop of more and more countries being keen to use local currencies for trade instead of the dollar.

In the past, India has used the Rupee-Rial and Rupee-Ruble mechanism to trade with Iran and Russia. In July, India's central bank RBI issued an order that allowed international trade in rupee, a move that not only benefits Russia but many countries in the neighbourhood.

Meanwhile, Argentina has said that India has expressed its support for the country's membership in an expanded BRICS grouping. This has been part of ongoing discussions between the two foreign ministers, dating back to the bilateral meeting between the two ministers on the sidelines of the Bali G20 Foreign ministers' meet, held earlier this year in July.

Countries like Iran, and Algeria are also keen to become a member of the over-decade-old grouping which has Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.

Argentine Vice President Cristina Kirchner launched a long and politically charged defense Tuesday against corruption charges, for which prosecutors have asked that she face 12 years in jail and a lifetime ban from politics.

Kirchner, 69, is accused of fraudulently awarding public works contracts in her stronghold in Patagonia.

She said Tuesday in a live social media broadcast that her political ideology, Peronism, was on trial and that prosecutors had already "written the sentence."

"Nothing, absolutely nothing that they have said was proven," said Kirchner, a lawyer by trade who was president from 2007 to 2015 having succeeded her late husband, Nestor Kirchner.

It was during those three presidential terms that the alleged graft occurred.

"It's not a trial against me, it's a trial of Peronism, of the national and popular governments," she said, brandishing during her 90-minute speech excerpts from laws, press articles, emails and accounts.

"It is 12 years (of prison time requested), the 12 years of the best government Argentina has had in these last decades."

Kirchner was speaking from her office at the senate, where she is the president and for which she enjoys parliamentary immunity.

Even if convicted -- the verdict is expected at the end of the year -- she would not go to prison, unless her sentence were ratified by the country's supreme court, or she loses her senate seat at the next elections at the end of 2023.

Another dozen people are on trial alongside the vice president and their court statements are due to last weeks.

Kirchner has decided to mount her defense on social media after her request for an extra deposition was refused on Monday.

Several hundred supporters cheered her arrival at the senate on Tuesday, while others did the same as she left her home in an upmarket Buenos Aires neighborhood.

And Justice Minister Martin Soria himself slammed the proceedings, saying "the lack of impartiality of the court and of the prosecutors has been exposed."

He accused them of having denied giving Kirchner the chance to "defend herself" by rejecting her request for additional testimony.

Such is her divisive nature that rival groups of protesters, those for and against her, congregated outside her home Monday night after public prosecutor Diego Luciani requested she be sentenced to 12 years in jail and barred from politics for life.

Police were forced to intervene as tensions mounted.

Luciani hit out at "an authentic system of institutional corruption" which he said was "probably the biggest corruption operation the country has known."

On Tuesday, fellow South American left-wing former presidents, Bolivia's Evo Morales and Dilma Rousseff of Brazil, expressed their support for Kirchner.

An 'angel of death' in Cordoba, Argentina, has been arrested in connection with the death of at least two newborns. According to a prosecutor, the nurse has been detained in relation to the deaths of otherwise healthy newborns that were delivered in a hospital.

The nurse Brenda Aguero, 27, was detained on Friday at the request of prosecutor Raul Garzon, who is looking into the deaths of five infants at the Neonatal Maternity Hospital in Cordoba, which is located at 700 kilometres (435.5 miles) northwest of Buenos Aires.

'Angel of death' is a term often used for nurses, and medical professionals charged and convicted for killing patients they were supposed to help.

As per AFP, talking to the media, Garzon disclosed that the nurse has been charged with the deaths of two babies, and may be charged with the murder of three other infants pending review of their medical records.

Their deaths are believed to have been caused by a dosage of a poisonous foreign substance. In addition to those that died, in eight other cases, newborns fell sick but escaped death.

"The babies died because a substance found in their bodies was incompatible with their life."

Garzon revealed that an excess of potassium was found in the newborns' bodies and that this was the reason for their demise. He added that there are "reasons to presume" that the suspect is responsible.

Raul Aragon, father of one of the slain infants told a Cordoba radio station, "We are devastated as a family.

"We were trying to overcome and mourn a natural death, and now we learn that they took our son from us -- that they killed him."

The infants died between March and June. However, the matter wasn't brought to light until a complaint was made by the grandmother of a baby who passed away on June 6.

Garzon also said that the deceased infants were born healthy, and their moms were in good health at the time of birth.

Aguero is one of nine persons who have been placed on administrative leave this month as part of an investigation to ascertain if the fatalities were the result of homicide, negligence, or malpractice. Charges of failing to perform official duties have been brought against three former hospital employees.

'Angel of death': Argentinian nurse arrested for murdering healthy newborns

Opera singer Placido Domingo's name has cropped up in the probe into an Argentine sect-like group with offices in the United States, whose leaders have been accused of crimes including sexual exploitation. Spanish opera singer Domingo, who has been accused of sexual harassment by multiple women in the last three years, was a prostitution consumer, not a criminal or a member of the group, according to a law enforcement officer, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the investigation is ongoing. Argentina does not have a prostitution ban.

Prosecutors' filings in the case state that police conducted dozens of raids in Buenos Aires Yoga School, which "built a cult around its leader" and subjected participants to "a situation of slavery and/or sexual exploitation."

It established a corporate structure with branches in at least three American cities, including Las Vegas, Chicago, and New York, as well as offices in Argentina. Currently, 19 persons are being held in Argentina, while four suspects are wanted in the US and at least three are believed to be still at large in the South American nation.

Domingo, 81, the sole remaining member of The Three Tenors, which also comprised the late Luciano Pavarotti and Jose Carreras, was one of opera's most popular artists.

In reports published by The Associated Press, more than 20 women accused Domingo of sexual harassment and other inappropriate behaviour in interactions that occurred from the late 1980s to the early 2000s. This damaged Domingo's reputation in the United States. His conduct was widely known in the classical music community, according to dozens more who spoke to AP.

Sexual harassment claims against Domingo were deemed to be credible after investigations by the American Guild of Musical Artists and the Los Angeles Opera, where he had previously worked as general director, were conducted. Domingo's career in the United States was put on hold by the allegations though he carried on touring in Europe and Latin America. According to his website, he is now performing in Mexico as part of a tour that will also take him to Italy later this month.
