At least three sailors were missing while one injured crewman was rescued after a fire raged through an offshore supply vessel, Greatship Rohini around 170 kms off Mumbai in the Arabian Sea, here on Saturday. 
 
According to an Indian Coast Guard spokesperson, the blaze broke out on the Greatship Rohini around this morning when it was close to the ONGC`s Bombay High NQO platform. 
 
On getting the information, the ICG diverted an offshore patrol vessel Samarth to the location and an ICG Dornier aircraft flew to the spot for an aerial assessment of the emergency. 
 
The ICG ship reached the vicinity of the fire-ravaged vessel around 13.30 hrs this afternoon while another ship, MV Albatross-5 pulled out the Greatship Rohini to a safe distance from the NQO ONGC platform rig. 
 
ICGS Samarth along with another OSV Priya-27 launched the fire-fighting operations with its advanced External Fire Fighting System and created a boundary cooling to control the spread of the blaze. 
 
Owing to excessive heat and some, the Greatship Rohini crew were unable to enter the engine room where the blaze started but an ICGS Samarth team boarded her for further assessment of the situation. 
 
The ICG said that while 3 sailors are still missing and believed to be trapped in the ship`s blazing engine room, the injured sailor was airlifted by an ONGC helicopter to Mumbai for treatment. 
 
Till 2000 hrs on Saturday, the fire-fighting operations were still underway on the Greatship Rohini and the ICGS also dispatched a pollution control vessel to the location, and further details are awaited on the mishap.

BrahMos as ‘prime strike weapon’ will ensure the warship’s invincibility by engaging naval surface targets at long ranges, thus making the destroyer another lethal platform of Indian Navy. The highly versatile BrahMos has been jointly designed, developed and produced by India and Russia.

BrahMos Aerospace, an India-Russia joint venture, produces the supersonic cruise missile that can be launched from submarines, ships, aircraft, or from land platforms.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the BrahMos Aerospace and the Indian Navy for the "successful" test-firing of the missile.

DRDO Chairman G Satheesh Reddy too congratulated the scientists and all personnel involved in the test-firing of the missile which he said will add to the capabilities of the Indian Armed Forces in many ways.

The Indian Coast Guard rescued 12 crew of MSV Krishna Sudama, a cargo vessel sinking in the Arabian Sea off the Gujarat coast, officials said on Sunday.

The Coast Guard received information on Saturday at 9 PM that there was flooding onboard the vessel 'MSV Krishna Sudama' around 10 nautical miles off the Okha coast.

MSV Krishna Sudama had sailed from Mundra on the morning of Saturday (September 26) and was proceeding to Djibouti, carrying 905 ton cargo consisting of rice and sugar.

"Search and rescue was immediately commenced wherein Coast Guard Ship C-411 sailed from Okha, C-161 was diverted from off Mundra, and MV Southern Robin in the vicinity of the area was diverted to render assistance," it said.

The Coast Guard ship C-411 arrived near the vessel in distress.

It undertook extensive search in the area and located the craft carrying 12 crew members who had abandoned the vessel as it was sinking due to flooding, it said.

The Coast Guard ship rescued all the 12 crew under challenging circumstances owing to night hours, floating dangerous debris and unfavourable weather conditions, it said.

"They were brought to Okha and are safe," the statement said.

The area where the incident took place is being monitored by the Coast Guard Ship C-161 so that it can combat any probable oil pollution incident that might result from leakage of fuel from the sunken dhow, it added.

Light-to-moderate rain lashed several states in northern India on Sunday, including Delhi, reducing the possibility of a second heat wave in the region for a week, as the IMD said a low-pressure area over the Arabian Sea could intensify into a cyclonic storm and move into the upper west coast.

The maximum temperature in Delhi was recorded below normal at 36 degrees Celsius due to light showers overnight and through the day, and the weatherman predicted the day temperature is likely to remain below 40 degrees during the next two days.

Several residents of Delhi-NCR witnessed a rainbow in the sky and sports enthusiasts played volleyball after the rainfall. Haryana, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh too received rainfall.

Kuldeep Srivastava, the head of the India Meteorological Department's regional forecasting centre, said the temperature in Delhi-NCR is likely to increase by 2-4 degrees between June 1 and June 3.

As another western disturbance is expected over northwest India in the first week of June, a heat wave is unlikely to return to the region before June 8, Srivastava said.

A brief spell of heat wave had swept parts of northern India last week.

A fresh western disturbance and southwesterly winds along with the formation of a low-pressure system in the Arabian Sea will bring moisture to Delhi-NCR.

The low-pressure system is likely to turn into a depression and then into a cyclonic storm before moving into north Maharashtra and south Gujarat by June 3, said the IMD.

It said the fishermen who have ventured into the sea along the north and south Gujarat coasts should return by Sunday and not go out till June 4.

The Ahmedabad meteorological centre of IMD advised hoisting of "distant cautionary (DC)-1" storm warning signals at all ports on north and south Gujarat coasts, as the sea condition was very likely to be "rough to very rough," with wind speed reaching 90-100 kmph gusting to 110 kmph by June 4.

In southern India, maximum temperatures were appreciably above normal (3.1 to 5.0 degrees) at isolated places in Goa, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry; and above normal (1.6 to 3.0 degrees) in coastal Karnataka, West Madhya Pradesh and Kerala.

Khargone district, 122 kilometres from Indore in Madhya Pradesh, sizzled at 45 degrees Celsius. Wardha, in Vidarbha region, recorded a maximum temperature of 43.4 degrees Celsius, IMD said.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the severe Cyclonic storm Maha which was over east-central Arabian Sea has moved further west-north westwards with a speed of 19 kilometers per hour in the past six hours.

It is very likely to move northwestwards during the next 24 hours and towards west-northwestwards between Saturday to Monday and recurve east-northeastwards towards south Gujarat coast thereafter.

"Mahe is very likely to intensify into a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm over east-central Arabian sea during the next 24 hours," the IMD stated in its All India Weather Forecast Bulletin.

The weather forecast agency further forecasted that the Depression over the west-central Arabian Sea has also moved west-southwestwards with a speed of 24 kmph during the past six hours.

"It is very likely to move southwestwards across the west-central Arabian Sea maintaining the intensity of a Depression during the next 12 hours and weaken into a Well Marked Low-Pressure Area thereafter."Also, under the influence of cyclonic circulation over the Gulf of Thailand and neighbourhood, a Low-Pressure Area is likely to form over the north Andaman Sea on November 3.

"It is very likely to move west-northwestwards and concentrate into a depression over east-central Bay of Bengal during the subsequent 48 hours."

Due to the prevailing weather system, rain and thundershowers were observed yesterday at many places over Lakshadweep and at a few places over Madhya Maharashtra and at isolated places over West Rajasthan, Saurashtra, Kutch, Madhya Pradesh, Konkan and Goa.

A police constable was killed and five people injured in Pakistan on Wednesday, following a gun battle with Taliban militants at a police housing and training complex, security officials said.

One person is missing and six others rescued after a tug boat capsized Monday morning in the Arabian Sea off the Worli coast in Mumbai, police said.

The tug boat "Revati" was carrying seven persons and a Coast Guard helicopter and an inshore patrol vessel, and personnel from the Mumbai police's coastal unit were deployed for the rescue effort, he informed.

Revati was on its way to Tarapur from Mumbai with a crew of seven when it capsized in the morning, a Coast Guard spokesperson said.

A distress call was received from the vessel after which Coast Guard Ship Amartya, a fast patrol vessel on surveillance duty, was diverted for the search and rescue operation, he said.

ICGS Amartya reached the spot and rescued six occupants from the sinking tug, he said.

The search and rescue operation for the seventh occupant of the boat is still underway and two ships and a Chetak helicopter have been deployed, he added.

Apart from a surface search by the two ships, two helicopter sorties have been launched as part of a coordinated sea-air search and rescue operation for the seventh person, he said.

The rescued tug occupants have been given medical aid and their condition is stable, he said.&nbsp;

Madhya Pradesh is staring at an acute water shortage as 65 dams, out of 164 important reservoirs in the state, have almost dried up.

Besides the 65 dams which have almost dried up, 39 tanks have 10 per cent or less water stock of their capacity, a top official the Madhya Pradesh Water Resources Department (MPWRD) said. The Indira Sagar Dam, built over the Narmada river in MP’s Khandwa district, has around 2,104 million cubic metres (MCM) of water as against a total capacity of 9,750 MCM, Adil Khan, Public Relations Officer, the Narmada Valley Development Authority (NVDA), told PTI.

“We are maintaining 2,104 MCM level in the Indira Sagar Dam,” he said. MPWRD Engineer-in-Chief Rajeev Kumar Sukalikar said some of the dams have almost run out of water due to last year’s scanty rainfall. “Eleven Urban Local Bodies (ULBs), out of the total 378 in the state, were getting water every four days,” said Prabhakant Katare, Engineer-in-Chief (ENC) with the MP Urban Administration Development Commissioners office. He said 50 ULBs were getting water on third, while 117 on alternate days.

Katare said right now the situation in the urban areas, which mainly depend on rivers and reservoirs for their water needs, was manageable. There are also reports of water shortage in rural MP. According to the reports, more than 30 per cent of the hand pumps and tube wells are not functioning due to mechanical glitch or a steep dip in underground water level, a claim denied by the Public Health Engineer (PHE) department.

PHE Department Engineering-in-Chief K K Songaria said 5.5 lakh hand pumps and 15,000 tube wells were catering to the needs of people in rural parts of the state. Songaria said around 4 per cent hand pumps and tube wells were out of order and denied claims that around 30 per cent of them were non-functional. “PHE Principal Secretary Pramod Agrawal and me are touring the state to ensure rural MP gets water,” he said.

Another NVDA official said the state government’s decision not to supply 500 MCM of water to Gujarat has helped them avert a water crisis in Madhya Pradesh so far.

Despite Mumbai&#39;s polluted beaches, the Olive Ridley turtles seem to have found one beach clean enough to nest, with around 80 hatchlings making their way to the Arabian Sea on Thursday.

A group of volunteers engaged in a clean-up of the Versova beach here stumbled upon the sight of Olive Ridley hatchlings on the beach. They called forest officials and ensured the turtles walked into the sea sans any hindrance.

Mumbai-based lawyer and environmentalist Afroz Shah, who initiated the beach clean-up drive in 2015, was present when the group noticed the hatchlings.

The people of Gujarat and the state administration today heaved a sigh of relief as Cyclone Ockhi dissipated over the Arabian Sea, sparing the poll-bound state. The cyclone was yesterday headed towards Gujarat after leaving a trail of destruction on the southern Indian coast.

The cyclone yesterday passed the Mumbai coast and much to the relief of the people in Maharashtra&#39;s capital, it just brought rains and there was no loss of life or damage to property.

As per an early morning release by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the cyclonic storm first turned into a &#39;deep depression&#39;, then into a &#39;depression&#39; and finally into a &#39;low pressure&#39; area after midnight. &quot;The depression over east-central and adjoining north-east the Arabian Sea weakened into a well-marked low-pressure area over the east-central Arabian sea and adjoining areas of north-east Arabian Sea, north coastal Maharashtra and south coastal Gujarat at 23:30 hours yesterday&quot;, the release said.

The cyclone dissipated over the sea before hitting the Gujarat coast, said Jayanta Sarkar, the director of the MeT Centre here.&nbsp;&quot;The cyclone did not reach Surat at all.
