Indian Navy steps up Arabian Sea security, deploys frontline destroyers

The Indian Navy has increased surveillance in the north and central parts of the Arabian Sea and the Gulf of Aden after frequent security issues were reported on merchant vessels which were sailing through international shipping lanes.

Naval task groups, which comprised destroyers and frigates, were deployed to undertake a maritime security operation and provide help to merchant vessels in case any security issues are faced by them, said the navy, in a statement on Sunday (Dec 31).

The navy added it is also working closely with the Coast Guard to check new security risks in the Indian Ocean.

“The piracy incident on MV Ruen approximately 700 nautical miles from the Indian coast and the recent drone attack on MV Chem Pluto, approximately 220 nautical miles South West of Porbandar indicates a shift in maritime incidents closer to Indian EEZ. The overall situation is being closely monitored by the Indian Navy in coordination with national maritime agencies. Indian Navy remains committed to ensuring the safety of merchant shipping in the region,” said the Indian Navy, in a statement.

Missile strike hits merchant ship off India’s coast

A missile strike damaged MV Chem Pluto off India's coast on Saturday (Dec 23) morning which was carrying crude oil and was heading towards Mangalore from a port in Saudi Arabia.

This happened amidst heightened tensions in the Red Sea, particularly with ongoing drone and missile strikes by Yemen's Iran-backed Houthi rebels on a crucial shipping lane.

In the incident, which transpired on Saturday (Dec 23), there were no casualties reported. However, there was a brief fire onboard the tanker which was successfully extinguished.

The incident involving the MV Chem Pluto is crucial as it led to the Pentagon openly accusing Tehran of its misdoings, by directly targeting ships, for the first time.

Notably, this incident follows a similar suspected drone attack on an Israeli-owned cargo ship in the Indian Ocean last month. The Red Sea attacks during the Israel-Hamas war have led major shipping firms to reroute vessels around the southern tip of Africa due to heightened security concerns.

Amid the evolving situation, an official from Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard warned of the potential forced "closure of other waterways" as well in case Israel fails to stop the ongoing war with the Hamas militant group.

When fiction becomes reality: Photo of Asiatic lion standing on Arabian Sea shore goes viral

In a daring operation that defied odds and adverse weather conditions, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) successfully executed a dramatic nighttime rescue from the Arabian Sea, saving the life of a Chinese national stranded on the Panama-flagged Research Vessel MV Dong Fang Kan Tan No 2. The mission unfolded on the night of August 16 and underscored ICG's unwavering commitment to maritime safety and outreach.

The MV Dong Fang Kan Tan No 2, en route from China to the United Arab Emirates, became the scene of a medical emergency as crew member Yin Weigyang experienced symptoms of cardiac arrest. Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre in Mumbai sprang into action, initiating communication with the vessel to provide essential telemedicine guidance.

With conditions deteriorating and Yin Weigyang's health rapidly declining, the ICG formulated a complex plan to effect a rapid and safe evacuation. The vessel, 200 kilometres off the coast of Mumbai in the Arabian Sea, presented formidable challenges, further exacerbated by the cover of darkness.

A statement by the coast guard said, "The exemplary operation undertaken by CG ALH and CGAS Daman during the dark hours enabled the saving of a precious life of a foreign national at sea and reaffirms Indian Coast Guard's commitment to the motto 'We Protect'."

The Indian coast guard used the CG ALH MK-III helicopter for the operation. The advanced aircraft, manned by ICG personnel, executed a precision rescue. The quick response and expert medical care provided aboard the helicopter were instrumental in stabilizing his condition.

A statement by the coast guard said, "The exemplary operation undertaken by CG ALH and CGAS Daman during the dark hours enabled the saving of a precious life of a foreign national at sea and reaffirms Indian Coast Guard's commitment to the motto 'We Protect'." The Indian coast guard used the CG ALH MK-III helicopter for the operation. The advanced aircraft, manned by ICG personnel, executed a precision rescue. The quick response and expert medical care provided aboard the helicopter were instrumental in stabilizing his condition. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has stated that a low-pressure area is forming over the southeast Arabian Sea which can intensify in the next 24 hours and can critically influence monsoon's advancement towards the Kerala coast. The IMD has stated that the depression can intensify into a cyclonic storm which has been named Cyclone Biparjoy in Bangladesh.

No tentative date for the arrival of the monsoon in Kerala was given by the weather department. Private forecasting agency Skymet Weather has stated that the monsoon may arrive in Kerala on June 8 or June 9. However, it is expected to be a "meek and mild entry". "These powerful weather systems in the Arabian Sea spoil the advancement of the monsoon deep inland. Under their influence, the monsoon stream may reach coastal parts but will struggle to penetrate beyond the Western Ghats," the agency further stated.

For the first time in India’s history, five women officers of the Indian Navy’s INAS 314 completed a maritime reconnaissance and surveillance mission onboard a Dornier 228 aircraft in the North Arabian Sea. These officers are based at the Naval Air Enclave in western Gujarat’s Porbandar city.

The aircraft was captained by the Mission Commander, Lieutenant Commander Aanchal Sharma, who had pilots — Lt Shivangi and Lt Apurva Gite — and tactical and sensor officers Lt Pooja Panda and Sub Lt Pooja Shekhawat in her team, according to the statement by the Indian Navy.

INAS 314 is a frontline Naval Air Squadron and operates the state-of-the-art Dornier 228 maritime reconnaissance aircraft.

In the run-up to the historical sortie, the women officers received months of ground training and comprehensive mission briefings.

Considering that this is a first-of-its-kind military flying mission, the Navy expects the achievement to pave the way for women officers in the aviation cadre to assume greater responsibility and aspire for more challenging roles.

“The Indian Navy has been a front-runner in driving transformation in the Armed Forces. Its impressive and pioneering women empowerment initiatives include induction of women pilots, selection of women Air Operations Officers into the helicopter stream and conducting an all-women sailing circumnavigation expedition across the globe in 2018,” it said in the press note.

“It perhaps marks a unique achievement for the Armed Forces that a crew of only women officers undertook an independent operational mission in a multi-crew maritime surveillance aircraft,” it added.

The 19-seater Dornier 228 was developed by the India state unit Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). It is a highly versatile multi-purpose light transport aircraft.

It has been developed specifically to meet the manifold requirements of utility and commuter transport, third-level services and air-taxi operations, coast guard duties and maritime surveillance.

The Dornier 228 is based on German design and production of the 1980s-90s. In 1983, HAL bought a production licence and manufactured at least 125 aircraft. In July 2017, 63 aircraft were still in airline service.
