In the world of consumer products, trends change every few years. While Apple has enjoyed a dominant market share in China, it is now losing ground in the world's second-largest economy. But demand is picking up in India where the middle class is growing in affluence and aspirations. So, what does the sales of Apple's flagship product say about the state of these two Asian heavyweights and their economies? That's what this next report explores.

What Apple sales say about state of economies

During Apple's annual shareholder meeting, CEO Tim Cook revealed plans to provide more insights into the company's utilisation of generative artificial intelligence (AI) later this year.

"We believe that will unlock transformative opportunities for users when it comes to productivity, problem solving and more," Reuters quoted Cook as saying.

While Apple has been somewhat slower in incorporating generative AI compared to competitors like Microsoft and Google, Cook assured shareholders that AI is already integral to Apple's products, with further developments expected in the near future.

Cook highlighted the capabilities of Apple's hardware in facilitating AI advancements, particularly noting the effectiveness of Apple silicon-powered Macs.

He noted, "Every Mac that is powered by Apple silicon is an extraordinarily capable AI machine. In fact, there's no better computer for AI on the market today."

Regardless of Apple's confidence in its AI capabilities, shareholders raised concerns about transparency regarding the company's AI usage and ethical guidelines.

During the meeting, Apple shareholders rejected a proposal demanding increased disclosure about the company's AI practices and ethical standards.

The proposal, put forth by the AFL-CIO pension trust, garnered significant support, winning 37.5 per cent of votes cast.

Brandon Rees, deputy director for corporations and capital markets with the AFL-CIO, expressed disappointment in Apple's lag in disclosing ethical guidelines related to AI, comparing it unfavorably to other technology companies.

The AFL-CIO's proposal aimed to urge Apple to provide a comprehensive report on its AI usage and disclose any ethical guidelines concerning the technology.

Specifically, the proposal emphasised the importance of transparency, consent, and compensation to creators and rights holders in AI training processes.

Apple countered the proposal, citing concerns that increased disclosures could potentially reveal strategic insights to competitors in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.

Apple has abandoned its ambitions to produce an electric car, US media reported Tuesday, ending a struggling decade-long project.

The iPhone maker had dedicated nearly 2,000 employees to its secretive car development programme, Bloomberg reported, but faced an increasingly competitive electric vehicle (EV) sector.

The target of "Project Titan," beginning around 2014, was to develop a fully autonomous car, according to media reports.

The decision to shut down the car project was announced internally on Tuesday, Bloomberg and The New York Times reported, citing unnamed sources.

Apple is making significant strides in the realm of artificial intelligence (AI) with the introduction of its latest AI feature, 'Ask'. This new venture, slated for testing this year, marks a departure from previous AI projects&nbsp;and promises to extend its benefits beyond iPhone users. According to reports from Macrumors, 'Ask' reflects Apple's ambitious foray into AI technology.

The 'Ask' AI tool is currently undergoing training, leveraging Apple's extensive internal database.

Similar in concept to ChatGPT but tailored specifically for Apple users, 'Ask' is engineered to efficiently address customer queries, even tackling complex and unfamiliar issues without immediate human intervention.

During the initial testing phase, a select group of support staff or advisors will assess the tool's responses and can pose up to five follow-up questions on a given topic.

<h2>Operational mechanism</h2>

When a question is posed, the 'Ask' tool automatically retrieves relevant information from its internal knowledge base.

Advisors are then able to evaluate the accuracy and relevance of the provided answers, and further probe with follow-up inquiries.

Apple plans to refine the tool based on feedback received during this testing phase. Notably, advisors are encouraged to prioritise the use of 'Ask' over alternative methods, demonstrating its capacity to address diverse customer concerns efficiently. For instance, the tool can effectively respond to inquiries such as troubleshooting device update issues.

<o:p></o:p>Brussels is gearing up to administer its first-ever fine against Apple, reportedly amounting to approximately €500 million (approximately $539 million), marking a significant milestone in the European Commission's efforts to regulate big tech, the Financial Times (FT) reported on Sunday.<o:p></o:p>

According to sources familiar with the matter the fine is the culmination of a lengthy antitrust investigation probing allegations that Apple violated EU laws by allegedly leveraging its platform to prioritise its music streaming services over competitors.<o:p></o:p>

The investigation, initiated following a formal complaint by music-streaming giant Spotify in 2019, scrutinised whether Apple obstructed apps from informing iPhone users about potentially cheaper alternatives for accessing music subscriptions outside of its App Store ecosystem. <o:p></o:p>

The European Commission is expected to announce its findings early next month, asserting that Apple's actions contravene EU competition regulations designed to foster fair market competition.<o:p></o:p>

"This fine sends a clear message that the EU will not tolerate anti-competitive practices, particularly from dominant players in the market," FT quoted a spokesperson from the European Commission as saying.<o:p></o:p>

"Apple's conduct has stifled competition and undermined consumer choice," they added.<o:p></o:p>

According to insiders, Brussels will charge Apple of exploiting its dominant market position and enforcing unfair trading conditions on its rivals. <o:p></o:p>

The impending fine is anticipated to be one of the most substantial penalties imposed by the EU on major tech firms, rivalling the hefty fines previously levied against Google, which are currently under legal scrutiny.<o:p></o:p>

While Apple has never before faced fines for antitrust violations from Brussels, it encountered legal trouble in France in 2020, resulting in a €1.1 billion penalty, later reduced to €372 million following an appeal. <o:p></o:p>

In response to the impending ruling, Apple has emphasised its commitment to fostering a competitive environment while expressing disappointment in the EU's pursuit of what it deems a meritless complaint. <o:p></o:p>

WION Business Wrap | EU fines Apple €500 million, Lufthansa’s ground staff strike and more

Big Tech companies like Apple and Google constantly draw criticism from various quarters for their collective monopoly of the digital world. The long list of critics now&nbsp;has&nbsp;a new&nbsp;addition.&nbsp;Anupam&nbsp;Mittal, one of the judges from the popular show Shark Tank India has compared the tech giants to the East India Company, the yesteryear global business behemoth which had lion's share in establishing the colonial British Empire in India and elsewhere in the world. In 19th century, shares of East Indian Company was almost like an infallible global currency, the status US Dollar enjoys today. But due to the company's&nbsp;part in colonialism, the name East India Company has extremely negative connotations.

In an interview to Business Insider India, Mittal also called for penalties on the Big Tech 'bullies'.&nbsp;

"It is the new East India Company and they operate with complete arrogance and impunity...," he said.

He made his case giving examples

"Startups spend anywhere between 10-50% of revenue on advertising on these platforms [like app stores] already. Essentially, the app store is worth nothing if you don’t have content....What choice does a company have but to adhere to their unfair practices… Now they say that any transaction that happens on apps downloaded via the store will be subject to 15-30% tax/commissions. What this means is that they want 50% of the revenues of the startups....," he said.

Big Tech companies like Apple and Google constantly draw criticism from various quarters for their collective monopoly of the digital world. The long list of critics now has a new addition. Anupam Mittal, one of the judges from the popular show Shark Tank India has compared the tech giants to the East India Company, the yesteryear global business behemoth which had lion's share in establishing the colonial British Empire in India and elsewhere in the world. In 19th century, shares of East Indian Company was almost like an infallible global currency, the status US Dollar enjoys today. But due to the company's part in colonialism, the name East India Company has extremely negative connotations. In an interview to Business Insider India, Mittal also called for penalties on the Big Tech 'bullies'. "It is the new East India Company and they operate with complete arrogance and impunity...," he said. He made his case giving examples "Startups spend anywhere between 10-50% of revenue on advertising on these platforms [like app stores] already. US: Police arrest three after thieves hit single Apple store multiple times

It has been barely a couple of days since Apple launched its Vision Pro virtual reality headset in the US. Since then, the futuristic product has become the talk of the town with people wearing it on the streets, while driving cars, at the gym, during flights and even while having lunch together.&nbsp;

But why are people wearing such bulky-looking gadget over their faces and is it safe while on the move?

The first impression of the Apple Vision Pro is that it is a mini-computer in front of you that has the capability of performing myriad tasks just with your hand gestures.

According to experts, the transformative spatial awareness of the device allows the user to perform myriad function even when on the move.&nbsp;

Notably, spatial computing is a way to describe the intersection of the physical world with the virtual environment, made possible by technology that enables users and machines to&nbsp;harmoniously manipulate objects and spaces.

YouTuber Casey Neistat, known for his blogs across New York, wore the headset through the streets of the city, onto the subway and into the heart of Times Square.&nbsp;

People are wearing Apple Vision Pro headsets while driving cars or walking. They shouldn't

US Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said on Monday (Feb 5) that human drivers need to remain attentive, after videos emerged showing Tesla drivers apparently using Apple's new Vision Pro headset while driving.

Responding to a widely-viewed video of a Tesla driver manipulating a virtual reality field with both his hands off the steering wheel, Buttigieg stressed that, despite advanced driver assistance systems, drivers must maintain control and engagement.

"Reminder-ALL advanced driver assistance systems available today require the human driver to be in control and fully engaged in the driving task at all times," Buttigieg said.

Apple CEO Tim Cook hinted towards strong prospects of introducing generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) into Apple products. Apple has been seen lagging in the AI race, as its rivals Google and Samsung have already incorporated some Gen AI features in their new smartphone models.

Cook talked about ongoing AI developments at Apple during the quarterly earnings on Thursday. He mentioned that generative AI software features are in the works at Apple and will make their way to customers “later this year”.

"As we look ahead, we will continue to invest in these and other technologies that will shape the future. That includes artificial intelligence, where we continue to spend a tremendous amount of time and effort, and we're excited to share the details of our ongoing work in that space later this year," Cook said in his remark, as reported by The Verge.

Though he didn’t reveal more about the company’s plan as to what will be changed and how it will be unveiled, one thing is for sure, Apple now seems to be catching up on the AI trend.&nbsp;

He expressed his excitement for the launch and said it’s a “huge opportunity for Apple with generative AI and with AI, without getting into many more details or getting out ahead of myself."

As per reports, Apple will position iOS 18 as one of its most substantial updates, integrating AI technologies throughout the system. References in iOS 17.4 code hinted at Apple testing its large language model, codenamed Ajax, alongside other technologies such as ChatGPT.

In a resolution to an ongoing dispute, US tech giant Apple has reportedly paid a substantial fine of 1.2 billion roubles ($13.65 million) to Russia's Federal Antimonopoly Service (FAS). <o:p></o:p>

This is based on a Reuters.<o:p></o:p>

The fine was imposed over allegations of Apple's abuse of its dominant market position in relation to in-app payments. The FAS revealed that Apple made the payment on January 19, and the funds have since been transferred to Russia's federal budget.<o:p></o:p>

The fine is a result of a previous ruling where the FAS asserted that Apple's distribution of apps through its iOS operating system provided its own products with a competitive advantage. <o:p></o:p>

Apple, in response, had "respectfully disagreed" with the FAS ruling. The tech giant, which did not provide immediate comments on Monday, has been entangled in antitrust cases, with this fine following a $12.1-million payment in February 2023 over another antitrust dispute related to its dominance in the mobile apps market.<o:p></o:p>

The FAS's move comes against the backdrop of Russia's tense relations with foreign technology companies, particularly regarding concerns over unlawful content and the failure to store user data locally.

The dispute involves a smaller company which claims to have introduced the feature.

Blood oxygen level&nbsp;is a key feature used by those wearing Apple Watches, particularly fitness enthusiasts, and is very useful in medical situations.

On the other side&nbsp;of the patent dispute is Masimo,&nbsp;a health technology and consumer electronics company based in Irvine, California.

The Cupertino, California-based giant was earlier allowed to sell Series 9 and Ultra 2&nbsp;as the patent case was continuing.

<h2>Masimo's allegations against Apple on patent infringement</h2>

Masimo claimed in its release that the company had&nbsp;earlier made available a study showing that Apple Watch’s pulse oximetry missed over 90 per cent&nbsp;of potentially life-threatening events.

"The Apple Watch pulse oximeter was not cleared by the United States Food and Drug Administration for medical use," Masimo claimed in the release&nbsp;while adding that&nbsp;the Masimo W1 health watch "was recently cleared by the FDA for its indicated medical uses, including continuous pulse oximetry".

Masimo said in its release that its pulse oximetry technology "is used on over 200 million patients in hospitals a year".

According to the company, the feature helped save babies’ eyesight in the neonatal ICU, detect critical congenital heart defects in newborns and save the lives of patients in post-surgical wards who are taking opioids.

Masimo and sister company Cercacor claimed that Apple poached its key staff, and accused the tech giant of stealing its blood oxygen level detection technology.

The US trade commission agreed to some of these claims last&nbsp;October and banned imports and sales of some of the Apple Watch models. But this ban was halted as hearings were going on Apple's appeal.

Most versions of Apple's watches, including the Series 9 and Ultra 2, have included the feature since 2020, BBC said in a report, adding some models do not have the feature.

For the first time in more than a decade, Apple Inc. dethroned Samsung Electronics to become the best-selling smartphone company last year, according to a report by Bloomberg citing data from a research firm IDC. This comes as the iPhone accounted for a fifth of the global market with over 200 million shipments in 2023.&nbsp;

<h2>About the report</h2>

South Korea’s largest company, Samsung, witnessed a slump in shipments last year and stood at 226.6 million, according to IDC estimates. Meanwhile, Apple’s iPhone accounting for a fifth of the global market witnessed 235 million shipments in 2023 topping the list among smartphone makers.&nbsp;

China’s Xiaomi Corp followed Samsung in the third spot. “While we saw some strong growth from low-end Android players like Transsion and Xiaomi in the second half of 2023, stemming from rapid growth in emerging markets, the biggest winner is clearly Apple,” said IDC’s Director Nabila Popal, as quoted by Bloomberg.&nbsp;

“All this despite facing increased regulatory challenges and renewed competition from Huawei in China, its largest market. Apple’s ongoing success and resilience is in large part due to the increasing trend of premium devices, which now represent over 20% of the market,” Popal added.&nbsp;

<h2>How did Apple manage to do this?</h2>
