<p>Navalny’s death weeks&nbsp;ahead of the Russian presidential election where Putin is running virtually unopposed for his fifth term which will keep him in power until 2030.</p>

<p>The EU official also said that the Kremlin critic’s “unexpected and shocking death is yet another sign of the accelerating and systematic repression in Russia.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>Furthermore, the countries called for an immediate and unconditional release of all political prisoners, human rights activists, journalists, and those who have been jailed for speaking out against the Russian invasion of Ukraine.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“Russia’s political leadership and authorities must be held to account,” said Knudsen.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Russia’s Investigative Committee says it has launched a procedural investigation into the death and the Kremlin has said it does not bow to EU demands.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A Russian source with knowledge of the discussions told the news agency Reuters separately that the prisoner exchange had been meant to take place in the middle of February and that both Navalny and his wife had agreed to it. The source also said Abramovich had been involved in the talks.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Initially, the plan envisaged an exchange only involving Gershkovich, and Abramovich had discussed it with Putin. The only person Putin was ready to swap him for was Krasikov. But the Germans were categorically against it, because it was an American problem. When Navalny appeared within this plan, the Germans finally agreed," the source said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Everything was finally confirmed when (German Chancellor Olaf) Scholz went to the States (he held White House talks on Feb. 9). The details of when and where all this would happen were already being discussed," it added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The US has already imposed a raft of sanctions on Russia, especially after it invaded Ukraine in 2022.</p>

<p>Kirby said new sanctions will further strengthen efforts to damage the Russian economy. He added that the details of the sanctions will be released on Friday (Feb 23).</p>

<h2><strong>Russia economy still expanding</strong></h2>

<p>Russia is already the world’s most-sanctioned nation in the world. According to castellum.ai, the US and allies have imposed over 19,000 sanctions on Russia since 2014.</p>

<p>The US alone has imposed above 4,500 sanctions during this period. In terms of most sanctions imposed, Russia is followed by Iran, Syria, North Korea, and Belarus.</p>

He also accused President Vladimir Putin of killing Navalny while acknowledging that his life was also in the Russian leader’s hands.</p>

<h2><strong>‘I will fight tyranny’</strong></h2>

<p>“As long as my heart beats in my chest, I will fight tyranny. As long as I live, I will fear no evil,” Yashin said in a post on social media, communicated through his lawyer. He added, “Of course, I understand the risks I face. I’m behind bars. My life is in Putin’s hands and it’s in danger.”</p>

<p>“We shared a common cause and dedicated our lives to making Russia peaceful, free and happy. Now both my friends are dead,” said Yashin.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Navalny’s death has sparked outrage across the world and raised fears for his allies, some of whom are imprisoned. Yashin learned about his friend and ally’s death in his prison near Smolensk in western Russia where he is serving his eight-and-a-half years sentence.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“In Putin’s understanding, this is how power is asserted – through murder, cruelty and demonstrative revenge,” said Yashin blaming Navalny’s death on the Kremlin.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>‘Murdered’</strong></h2>

<p>Yashin, a long-time ally of Navalny and the former head of an opposition party was sentenced in December 2022, months after Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The 40-year-old was sentenced for statements he made about war crimes allegedly committed by Russian forces in the Ukrainian city of Bucha.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Russia passed a law days after sending troops into Ukraine in February 2022 which criminalised “spreading false information” about the country’s armed forces.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The jailed Russian activist was referring to the time when&nbsp;Navalny was allegedly poisoned by a&nbsp;nerve agent in 2020.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Russian president has no “no moral or legal limitations” and each of their lives is in danger, he added. “I understand that. However, it doesn’t change anything for me. I find it to be beneath my dignity to be scared of a thug,” said Yashin.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Peskov further said that Moscow considered a series of "blatantly vulgar statements" about Navalny's death to be "absolutely unacceptable".&nbsp;</p>
