A woman from Alabama, US, gave birth to twins in two consecutive days after 20 hours in labour, in what is being described as a "one in a million" pregnancy.

Kelsey Hatcher (32) birthed one daughter on Tuesday (Dec 19), and a second one on Wednesday, the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Hospital said on Friday.

The girls were described as fraternal twins —with rare separate birthdays.

Announcing the arrival of her "miracle babies" on social media, Hatcher praised the doctors, calling them "incredible".

<h2>'Never planned a pregnancy like this'</h2>

In a separate statement in the hospital’s press release, she said, “Never in our wildest dreams could we have planned a pregnancy and birth like this … but bringing our two healthy baby girls into this world safely was always the goal, and UAB helped us accomplish that.”

“It seems appropriate that they had two birthdays, though. They both had their own ‘houses’, and now both have their own unique birth stories,” she said.

Hatcher first found out that she had a double uterus (uterus didelphys) at the age of 17. According to medics, this phenomenon is rare and affects only 0.3 per cent of women.

Furthermore, the chances of becoming pregnant in both uteri —a dicavitary pregnancy —are even rare, the UAB said.

The last time such a medical anomaly occurred was in 2019 in Bangladesh when a woman with two uteruses gave birth almost a month after delivering a premature baby in her other uterus, according to BBC.

This was Kelsey Hatcher’s fourth pregnancy. She has previously delivered babies from one uterus at a time only.

<h2>'Once in a million pregnancy'</h2>

But the fact she came to know about carrying two babies in separate uteruses when she went for an ultrasound check-up after noticing bleeding weeks into the latest pregnancy. She wanted to take preventive measures as there are higher chances of miscarriages for those with double uteruses.

During the appointment, doctors found that Hatcher had an additional foetus forming in her left uterus.

“As soon as she moved the wand to the other uterus, I gasped,” Hatcher said in the hospital press release. “Sure enough, there was another baby. We just could not believe it.”

The UAB Hospital, however, described her pregnancy as routine. Prof Richard Davis, who co-managed the delivery, pointed out that each baby had enjoyed "extra space to grow and develop".

This was because each baby had a womb to itself, he said - unlike in a typical twin pregnancy, reports BBC.

“The four that we responded to when they jumped out of the boat, they literally broke their neck and, you know, basically an instant death,” he added.

According to Birmingham Police Lt. Ron Harless, there was an exchange of gunfire, and three men and one woman were shot outside Tin Roof, located in the city's Lakeview District.&nbsp;

The shooting was reported around 12:45 am&nbsp;by an off-duty Birmingham police officer present at the location.

Upon their arrival, the police and the Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service discovered inside the bar a man who had been shot. Outside, in the parking lot, was a woman who had been grazed by a bullet.&nbsp;

An SUV that initially fled the scene was subsequently pulled over nearby. Inside the vehicle, two men were found seriously wounded, with one of them having life-threatening injuries.&nbsp;

The local police have opened an investigation into the incident.

According to Truman Fitzgerald, the Birmingham Police public information officer, the department received calls of multiple people being shot in the 900 block of 47th Street North at around 10 pm local time. Upon reaching the scene, the police officers managed to find one woman and three men injured in front of an apartment building. The Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service was pressed into action and the victims were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. However, one of the men succumbed to the injuries after initial treatment. Fitzgerald added that while men were shot, the woman suffered injuries not caused by gunfire. The preliminary investigation revealed that a birthday party was happening in the area when an 'unidentified' assailant approached the party attendees and opened fire. So far, the police do not have any major lead nor do they have any suspect in custody. Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Sergeant Jeremy Burkett of the ALEA declined to discuss how investigators believe the shooting unfolded. “We can’t get into a motive right now, because that would be part of an ongoing investigation. We can’t share that,” Sergeant Burkett said.&nbsp;

Burkett also urged people at the party to have the personal courage to tell the police what they witnessed.&nbsp;

District Attorney Mike Segrest, meanwhile, said that Ty Reik and Travis, despite being minors, would be prosecuted as adults.&nbsp;"We're going to make sure every one of those victims has justice, and not just the deceased, Sergrest told reporters.&nbsp;

U.S. President Joe Biden approved declaration of emergency for Mississippi on Sunday after the powerful storm&nbsp;tore across the state, killing at least 25 people there and one in Alabama, reported Reuters.

A White House Statement said, Biden ordered federal aid to supplement state, tribal and local recovery efforts in the affected areas&nbsp;and funding will be available to affected people in the counties of Carroll, Humphreys, Monroe, and Sharkey.

The country’s National Weather Service confirmed a tornado caused damage about 60 miles (96 km) northeast of Jackson, Mississippi. While in the rural towns of Silver City and Rolling Fork, the tornado continued to move at the speed of 70 mph (113 kph) toward Alabama’s Winona and Amory, reported the Associated Press.&nbsp;

Confirming&nbsp;the death toll, Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves said that search and rescue teams are in full swing. "We know that many more are injured. Search and rescue teams are still active. The loss will be felt in these towns forever,"&nbsp;he wrote on Twitter.

Coroner Angelia Easton told ABC News that at least 13 people had been killed in Mississippi’s Sharkey County which is located in Rolling Fork. Additionally, the news report citing coroners from different counties also confirmed two deaths in Monroe County and three in Carroll County. While a Mississippi Highway Patrol trooper said that one person had died in Silver City, reported ABC news.&nbsp;

Subsequently, the Governor of Mississippi, Tate Reeves took to Twitter and confirmed that at least 23&nbsp;Mississippians were killed following&nbsp;"violent tornados."&nbsp;

US: At least 26 killed as powerful tornado rips Mississippi, Biden declares emergency

South Korean automaker Hyundai Motor Co on Friday told shareholders that it would divest its controlling stake in a major Alabama auto parts plant where Reuters last year documented children as young as 12 were working. In a February&nbsp;24 letter to shareholders from Hyundai Chief Executive Jaehoon Chang, the company said recent audits at 29 of its direct suppliers across Alabama made it confident they are “now in full compliance with underage labour laws.”

The audits began last August&nbsp;after Reuters first reported on the issue, and were conducted by an outside law firm that reviewed documents and did on-site inspections. Hyundai provided a copy of the letter to Reuters.

Hyundai also told investors that it was implementing extensive new corporate measures, including a training programme for its parts suppliers to begin next month in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Labour (DOL), to prevent future child labour violations. DOL did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Hyundai’s pledge to its shareholders comes after a 2022 Reuters investigation showed several suppliers to the automaker’s massive Montgomery, Alabama vehicle plant used underage migrant workers to make parts for its popular U.S.-made cars and SUVs.

One of the plants where children worked, SMART Alabama LLC in rural Luverne, Alabama, is a direct Hyundai subsidiary. According to Hyundai’s financial statements from last year, the automaker controls a 72 per cent stake in SMART.

Chang wrote that Hyundai was “in the process of divesting its ownership interest in SMART” but it would ensure “that the economically important jobs in the Luverne, Alabama community are preserved.”

Hyundai’s letter did not say when the transaction would be completed or identify a buyer or the form a divestiture would take. Since the early 2000s, the metal stamping plant has made chassis parts for hundreds of thousands of Hyundai vehicles per year.

Following Reuters’ first story on child labour at SMART last July, as many as 10 Hyundai suppliers in Alabama have been under investigation by state or federal authorities for child labour violations, Reuters reported in December.

One of the plants was inspected last August and authorities found and removed several children from the factory floor, later issuing penalties to the plant operator and a third-party staffing firm who recruited them. “The use of underage labour at a supplier or any operation is unacceptable, and we are committed to making sure non-compliance never happens again,” Chang wrote in the letter. “This is a zero tolerance issue.”

As Reuters reported earlier, many of the underage workers who found their way into the Alabama auto parts plants were recruited by third-party staffing agencies, a process that can allow big corporations to turn a blind eye to the illegal employment of minors.

In the shareholder letter, Chang reiterated that Hyundai was “discouraging” suppliers from relying on such staffing agencies in the future. He wrote that staffing firms who hired children to work at Hyundai supplier plants had provided false employee documentation. In the future, however, Hyundai and its supply chain partners must do more to ensure children are never put to work in their factories, the letter said.

“Ultimately, the responsibility is with Hyundai to make sure all our suppliers understand and meet our high global workforce standards,” Chang wrote.

U.S. and Alabama law prohibit people under age 16 from working in industrial factory settings, and anyone under 18 is prohibited from working in particularly dangerous roles in automotive plants, such as driving forklifts or operating metal-cutting and stamping machines.

Earlier this month, 33 members of Congress urged DOL to seek strong and swift penalties against those responsible for child labour in the Hyundai supply chain.

At least seven people have been killed in central Alabama’s Autauga County and two others&nbsp;including a five-year-old boy&nbsp;in Georgia,&nbsp;said&nbsp;officials.&nbsp;

As of Friday morning, at least 40,000 homes and businesses are still out of power across the two aforementioned states, according to the tracking site PowerOutage.us. Visuals emerging from the affected areas show uprooted trees, damaged power lines, debris from nearby houses on the streets, and several structures reduced to rubble.&nbsp;

The weather agency, on Friday, also said that damage appears to be from at least two tornadoes rated EF-2 and EF-3 and that the total number of tornadoes is still being determined. The NWS also said that the twister in the hardest-hit central Alabama left damage which is consistent with an EF-3 tornado which can contain wind speeds between 136 and 165 mph. Notably, EF-5 damage is the most severe category on the scale.&nbsp;

The storms stretched from Mississippi to Georgia where Governor Brian Kemp, also confirmed the death of a state employee who was responding to the emergency. Additionally, officials also confirmed that four tornadoes touched down southeast of the state capital Atlanta but the damage was seen across several parts of the state. Meanwhile, Alabama Governor Kay Ivey, on Thursday, declared a state of emergency across six counties.&nbsp;

Alabama and Georgia declared a state of emergency in light of a severe weather outbreak. The deadly tornado ripped through homes, toppling roofs, and uprooting trees in Selma, Alabama.

People in Selma have been advised to seek shelter and stay off the local roads. There have also been reports of downed power lines all across the area. Urging the residents to call 911 to report damages, The City of Selma said, "We are asking everyone to stay calm and stay in place until further notice."

Selma and its surrounding areas saw some of the worst damage, with National Weather Service (NWS) calling&nbsp;the tornado "large and extremely dangerous.” NWS meteorologist Gerald Satterwhite estimated that&nbsp;the twister lasted on the ground for approximately 80 kilometres and damaged seven counties throughout the state, CNN reported. “It was a pretty significant tornado” with “debris lofted in the air to about 10,000 to 15,000 feet,” Satterwhite said.

An Autauga County Sheriff's spokeswoman confirmed the number of deceased but didn’t share any other information, Reuters reported.&nbsp;According to Coroner Buster Barber, at least four people died from flying debris during the tornado.

"I am sad to have learned that six Alabamians were lost to the storms that ravaged across our state. My prayers are with their loved ones and communities. We are far too familiar with devastating weather, but our people are resilient. We will get through it and be stronger for it," Alabama Governor Kay Ivey&nbsp;tweeted.

"The best we can tell is about 40 homes have major damage or have been completely destroyed," weather.com quoted Emergency Management Director Ernie Baggett, as saying.

Following the storms, six counties in Alabama, including Autauga County, saw Governor Ivey Kay issue an emergency declaration. Additionally included in the declaration were the counties of Chambers, Coosa, Dallas, Elmore, and Tallapoosa.

"We have already seen parts of the state rattled by this severe weather system, which is why I have issued a state of emergency," Alabama Gov. KayIvey said in a tweet.

Nearly 34 tornadoes hit the US, with 58 counties in California being declared as disaster areas, Governor Gavin Newsom said.

One of the officers, after the handcuffs were locked, "kind of whispered it to me: 'Don't cry'", she said. Menefield, recalling the incident, said that she told the officer, “How would you feel if they came and arrested your grandmama?"&nbsp;

"I was in a little cage-like thing at the police station. And I said, 'Y'all put me in this cage? You ought to be ashamed of yourself,” Menefield said.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, police chief Reynolds, in his Facebook post, stated that Menefield was contacted several times by the city officials about her unpaid bills.&nbsp;

He added that a citation was received by her for the unpaid bills in August and that the code enforcement department of the city "tried to call Ms Menefield several times and attempted to contact her in person at her residence."&nbsp;

Reynolds further narrated how a notice was left by the officials on her door which had the contact information and an advisory that she needs to appear in court in September.&nbsp;

"A warrant for Failure to Pay Trash was issued when she did not appear in court," said Reynolds, adding that in the past two years, Menefield's trash services have been suspended three times.&nbsp;

Menefield said that she is unaware of the unpaid bills in question and that no notice was sent to her to appear in court.&nbsp;

Even as Alabama Department of Corrections prepared to execute a death-row inmate Thursday night, a journalist was stopped from witnessing it. Reason? Apparently her skirt was too short and violated the “prison dress code.”

Ivana Hrynkiw, a reporter and managing producer with AL.com, who has attended seven executions in her career, was told by a prison official that her dress did not meet the dress regulations.

“I have worn this skirt to prior executions without incident, to work, professional events and more and I believe it is more than appropriate. At 5′10″ with my heels on, I am a tall and long-legged person,” she said on Twitter. 
 
However, she tried to salvage the situation by pulling the skirt down to the hips to increase its length. But the prison official wasn’t up for it. Hrynkiw then borrowed a pair of fisherman’s waders from a local television photographer, The Guardian reported.

The matter was still far from resolved as now Hrynkiw’s open-toed shoes became a problem. She changed into a pair of tennis sneakers she had in her car.

“This was an uncomfortable situation, and I felt embarrassed to have my body and my clothes questioned in front of a room of people I mostly had never met,” Hrynkiw’s post further said.

Another journalist, an Associated Press reporter, Kim Chandler, was also subjected to a full-body inspection. She was made to stand and had the length of her clothing checked. However, her dress was cleared for the execution.

On Friday, a formal complaint was filed by AL.com with the Alabama Department of Corrections, Gov. Kay Ivey and Attorney General Steve Marshall.

The Associated Press has also sent a letter to Ivey asking for an investigation. It has also asked to “ensure such behavior is not tolerated and does not occur again.”

A 50-year-old man from Alabama state in US who was convicted of killing his ex-girlfriend decades ago was executed despite opposition from the victim’s family to spare him.

According to reports, Joe Nathan James Jr. received a lethal injection at a south Alabama prison. He was pronounced dead at 9. 27 pm on Thursday after the execution was delayed by nearly three hours.

The official proceedings began with the incarceration after the US Supreme Court denied his request for a stay.

The 50-year-old convict was sentenced to death in 1994 for shooting dead Faith Hall, 26, in Birmingham.

Alabama Governor Kay Ivey on Wednesday said that the execution would proceed as per the plans even though Hall’s daughters said that they were fine with having James serve life in prison instead of capital punishment.

“Today is a tragic day for our family. We are having to relive the hurt that this caused us many years ago,” Hall’s family said in a statement&nbsp;published by the local TV station WIAT.

“We hoped the state wouldn’t take a life simply because a life was taken, and we have forgiven Mr Joe Nathan James Jr … We pray that God allows us to find healing after today and that one day our criminal justice system will listen to the cries of families like ours even if it goes against what the state wishes. Our voices matter and so does the life of Mr Joe Nathan James Jr.”

According to the prosecutors James had become obsessed with Hall after she rejected him. He continued to stalk and harass her for months before killing her.

The killing took place on August 15, 1994, when James forced his way in Hall’s friend’s apartment, pulled a gun from his waistband and shot she three times, according to court documents.

James was then convicted of capital murder in 1996 by Jefferson county, which voted to recommend the death penalty, which a judge imposed.

The ruling was later overturned when a state appeals court ruled that the judge had wrongly admitted some police reports into evidence. James was retried and again sentenced to death in 1999, when jurors trashed defence claims that he was under emotional duress at the time of the killing.

NFTs generate several hundred million dollars in transactions every month according to&nbsp;the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

Several big auction houses such as Sotheby's and Christie's are selling NFTs at massive prices. But they all are wary of scams and duplicates.

NFTs gained traction last year when virtual entities peaked during the coronavirus pandemic. Its biggest marketplace OpenSea, has stopped trading Sand Vegas tokens.
