<p>Sharif talked about the ties with Indian while addressing the inaugural session of the Pakistan Minerals Summit in Islamabad on August 1.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This is the first-ever mineral summit in the country and its aim is reportedly to explore the vast potential of the minerals industry.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Sharif said, "We have nothing against anybody, we have to look after our own self and build our nation. Even with our neighbour, we are prepared to talk provided that they are serious in discussing matters."&nbsp;</p>

<p>Sharif further said that "we (India and Pakistan) have fought three wars in the last 75 years, which has generated more poverty, unemployment and lack of resources".&nbsp;</p>

<p>"God forbid if there is a nuclear flashpoint, who will live to tell what happened? This is not the option," he said.&nbsp;</p>

We cannot justify what happened in Manipur by saying that this happened elsewhere,” the Chief Justice reportedly said.</p>

<p>The Supreme Court raised the possibility of forming a Special Investigation Team (SIT) or committee comprising former judges to oversee the situation. However, the court clarified that it would first hear the responses of the law officers representing the Central government and Manipur on this matter during the next session on Tuesday.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Police handling of case comes under scrutiny</strong></h2>

<p>The bench expressed dismay over the police's handling of the case and questioned why the FIR in the video case was transferred to a magisterial court on June 24, over a month after the incident. Many have lost loved ones and homes due to the violence, making the situation critical and demanding prompt action.</p>

<p>According to a weekend report by Standard Chartered Bank, the nominal GDP is forecast to grow by 10 per cent annually. The main growth driver is external trade, which may double to $2.1 trillion by 2030 from $1.2 trillion in fiscal year 2023.</p>

<p>Household consumption is said to be the second-biggest growth driver, according to the report. By fiscal year 2030, consumption is expected to jump from the present $2.1 trillion to $3.4 trillion, which is as big as the GDP for fiscal year 2023.</p>

<p>In a statement made last week, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that he would ensure that India's economy is brought to $5 trillion during his next term in office, making it the third-largest behind the US and China. Japan is now ranked third, while Germany is fourth.</p>

<p>The report predicts that nine states, rather than just one, will eventually reach the upper middle-income country category with a per capita income of $4,000 or more. Telangana currently holds the top spot in the league table for per capita income, with Rs 2,75,443 ($3,360) in FY23. Karnataka is next with Rs 2,65,623, Tamil Nadu with Rs 2,41,131, Kerala with Rs 2,30,601, and Andhra Pradesh with Rs 2,07,771.</p>

<p>Telangana, Delhi, Karnataka, Haryana, Gujarat, and Andhra Pradesh together make up 20 per cent of the country’s GDP now, and by fiscal 2030, each of these states will have a per-capita GDP of $6,000 or more.</p>

<p>However, big states like UP and Bihar, which together account for 25 per cent of the population, will still have per capita income below $2,000 in fiscal year 2030.</p>

<p>The consumer market will still be the same size as the economy today even if household consumption expenditures fall by 1% from their current proportion of GDP, which accounts for 57 per cent of the GDP.</p>

<p>The large percentage of people who are of working age will continue to be primary growth enablers. In 2020, 64.2 per cent of the population in the country was of working age. This percentage will increase to 64.8 per cent, but it could also slightly decline to 63.6 percent in 2040 and 61.1 percent in 2050.</p>

India’s average income projected to increase by 70% to $4,000 by FY30: Report

<p>An Indian-origin man has been sentenced to nine years in prison by a United Kingdom court after he was found guilty of attacking one of his neighbours brutally with a wooden pole.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As per news agency PTI, Bedfordshire Police, which conducted the probe, said that the convicted, Rishi Casseeram, aged 35, left the victim with multiple serious facial fractures as well as substantial bruising to his back.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The incident took place in the month of June this year when Casseeram was arrested at his flat in Luton, eastern England, and sentenced for the crime at Luton Crown Court earlier this month.</p>

<p>“This was an extraordinarily violent attack that left behind a truly shocking crime scene,” said Detective Sergeant Bill Haigh from Bedfordshire Police.</p>

<p>“The victim, in this case, will have to live with the impact of Casseeram's actions for the rest of his life. Violent thugs like Casseeram have no place on the streets of Bedfordshire. I am glad we have been able to put him behind bars for a considerable period of time,” he said.</p>

<p>The court heard that a few days prior to the attack, Casseeram and the victim got into a verbal fight. On June 25, 2022, the victim returned home and saw Casseeram coming towards him in his flat and before he could shut the door, the assailant forcibly got inside his house.</p>

<p>Surgeons who treated the victim said his wounds were consistent with being attacked with a blunt instrument like a baseball bat, said the police.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The victim told police officers: “I can't believe this. He just kept hitting me.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>Further probe by police officers revealed more shocking details about Casseeram. The police said that the convicted attacker had punched another of his neighbours in the face the day before.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In court, he tried to claim that someone else had attacked the victim in a grave assault. He further tried to assert that he was acting in self-defence during the other incident. However, a jury found Casseeram guilty of foisting distressing bodily harm (GBH) on purpose and attack in December last year.</p>

<p>At Luton Crown Court on July 21, Casseeram was sentenced to eight years in prison for the GBH and a further year in jail for the assault.</p>

<p>The judge called Casseeram a "dangerous" offender, who must serve a further four years on licence or monitoring.</p>

An Indian-origin man has been sentenced to nine years in prison by a United Kingdom court after he was found guilty of attacking one of his neighbours brutally with a wooden pole.

An Indian-origin man has been sentenced to nine years in prison by a United Kingdom court after he was found guilty of attacking one of his neighbours brutally with a wooden pole. As per news agency PTI, Bedfordshire Police, which conducted the probe, said that the convicted, Rishi Casseeram, aged 35, left the victim with multiple serious facial fractures as well as substantial bruising to his back. The incident took place in the month of June this year when Casseeram was arrested at his flat in Luton, eastern England, and sentenced for the crime at Luton Crown Court earlier this month. “This was an extraordinarily violent attack that left behind a truly shocking crime scene,” said Detective Sergeant Bill Haigh from Bedfordshire Police. “The victim, in this case, will have to live with the impact of Casseeram's actions for the rest of his life. Violent thugs like Casseeram have no place on the streets of Bedfordshire. I am glad we have been able to put him behind bars for a considerable period of time,” he said. The court heard that a few days prior to the attack, Casseeram and the victim got into a verbal fight. On June 25, 2022, the victim returned home and saw Casseeram coming towards him in his flat and before he could shut the door, the assailant forcibly got inside his house. Surgeons who treated the victim said his wounds were consistent with being attacked with a blunt instrument like a baseball bat, said the police. He just kept hitting me.” Further probe by police officers revealed more shocking details about Casseeram. The police said that the convicted attacker had punched another of his neighbours in the face the day before. In court, he tried to claim that someone else had attacked the victim in a grave assault. He further tried to assert that he was acting in self-defence during the other incident. However, a jury found Casseeram guilty of foisting distressing bodily harm (GBH) on purpose and attack in December last year. At Luton Crown Court on July 21, Casseeram was sentenced to eight years in prison for the GBH and a further year in jail for the assault. The judge called Casseeram a "dangerous" offender, who must serve a further four years on licence or monitoring. <p>Three years on, the spectre of Galwan is looming large over India’s China policy. Amidst China’s unwillingness to back down and Indian forces’ intensifying willingness to hold their ground, we are likely to see more skirmishes similar to the one witnessed in Arunachal Pradesh’s Tawang sector in December last year, taking place. And in this light, an assessment of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army’s (PLA) capacity-building close to the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in the past three years indicates that China is not planning to concede its strategic entrenchment beyond India’s claim lines. Rather, it is attempting to create a new status quo with increased firepower available for ready use in anticipation of such potential skirmishes.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>Capabilities of the actor India is confronting</strong></p>

<p>In order to build a world-class fighting force by 2050, Chinese President Xi Jinping initiated reforms of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) in 2015, and a cornerstone of said reforms has been the switch from Military Regions (MRs) to Theatre Commands (TCs). Of the five theatre commands created, the Western TC is the one assigned to take care of mountainous/high-altitude offensive and defensive campaigns, and other mobilisation endeavours on the India-China border front.&nbsp;</p>

The focus of each theatre command is to become adept at conducting Multi-Domain Integrated Joint Operations (MDIJO). This indicates that the ground, air, naval, and rocket forces assigned to the command have to seamlessly combine their individual strengths across all frontiers of warfare (including electronic, cyberspace and outer space), to realise the goal of victory on the battlefield. And even though no naval brigades have been assigned to the Western TC (given its land-oriented posture), between 2019 and 2022, there has been a steady increase in its deployment of infantry divisions and brigades, border defense brigades, and missile units on China’s borders with India, Nepal and Bhutan.</p>

<p>In addition, the Western TC is equipped with resources from two sub-theatre-level Military Commands (MCs), namely Xinjiang and Xizang (Tibet). The two MCs were elevated to a sub-theatre level rank in 2016, and came under the direct control of the Western TC’s Ground Forces. This is as opposed to the other provincial-level MCs, which are under the mandate of the National Defence Mobilisation Department of the Chinese Central Military Commission. This signifies that the mission, function, and capabilities of the Xinjiang and Tibet MCs have been expanded, especially since each of them respectively borders one major area of dispute between India and China – Aksai Chin and Arunachal Pradesh.</p>

<p>Specialised divisions and equipment are assigned to these MDs to enhance their operational capability in the difficult terrain around the LAC. For example, as per the 2022 ‘Military Balance’, since late 2020, the Xinjiang MC is being equipped with NORINCO Type-08 Infantry Fighting Vehicles, Type-15 light tanks, and Type-99 main battle tanks, which have emerged specifically in Southern Ladakh. As a show of force and tactic near the border, the Tibet MC has engaged in testing of air-defense missile launcher vehicles at altitudes of over 4000 meters in sub-zero temperatures.</p>

<p>To enable transport of important equipment to the frontlines, like cold-resistant gear (such as thermos flasks, cotton-padded coats and anti-fragment goggles), and subsequently even light tanks and helicopters, China has developed a heavy-transport aircraft called the Y-20, and assigned it to the Western TC. In November 2021, the Y-20 demonstrated its capability to fly winter gear to border troops stationed along the LAC within seven hours. It is likely that as the aircraft engages in more such transactions, its time-of-flight and load-carrying capacity will both expand.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A new capacity the Western TC has been building in the past three years is the use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) like quadcopter drones for functions such as delivering food and water to deployed PLA personnel in plateau regions, performing intelligence and surveillance, acquiring targets, and engaging in swarm tactics to disengage enemy lines. Analysts even suggest that China may be ahead of American capabilities to deploy swarm drones. Now, India is preparing to counter this new threat, by planning to induct ‘Zorawar’ light tanks with counter-drone capabilities meant for high-altitude deployment. In 2022, India has also launched the second edition of the Meher Baba Swarm Drones Competition with an aim to find counter-drone solutions for deployment at the border.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Even though it is unlikely that an eventuality of a nuclear nature emerges on the India-China border, available information on nuclear forces between the two sides indicates that since 2020, while China operates a little over 100 missiles capable of targetting all or elements of Indian mainland, the Indian side maintains only 10 (Agni-III) launchers capable of hitting all of Chinese mainland, and 8 (Agni-II) launchers capable of only reaching Tibet.&nbsp;</p>

<p>These conventional capabilities exclude other technological strides China has made to actualise a joint operational doctrine at the border. For example, it is investing heavily in space-based and Artificial Intelligence (AI) surveillance capabilities to make Command, Control and Communications (C3) more effective, while also deploying electronic interference units to create an ‘electromagnetic fog’ that can deceive enemy systems or misguide enemy drones.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>Has India drawn its lessons?</strong></p>

<p>The Galwan Valley conflict was a landmark demonstration of the fighting power of Indian forces at the LAC. India’s resolve has been visible in its deployment of 50,000 additional troops along the LAC at the height of tensions in 2020-21, and its plan to deploy two additional mountain strike corps (the 1st and 17th). However, in many areas, it also demonstrated the shortcomings of Indian comprehensive power vis-a-vis China. For example, &nbsp;the 1st strike corps was initially meant to be deployed to India’s western border with Pakistan, and are now being ‘realigned’ to the LAC. It shows a real financial constraint facing the Indian armed forces, and a lack of balance between the two actively hostile fronts.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Similarly, border infrastructure and connectivity are a major hurdle for India, because on the one hand, while Chinese troops have motorable roads even beyond Indian claim lines, India’s troops fall short and reach only up to some distance of their claim lines. For ease of transport and air-lift, China has now even inducted the Y-20, for which India does not possess a counterpart.</p>

<p>Overall, there is a mismatch in force capacity between the two sides. The Indian Army’s current LAC deployment across the Northern, Eastern and Central commands is about 225,000, while the Chinese Western TC and its two MCs account for 230,000 troops.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In the past three years, India has repeatedly emphasised that its primary national security priority is the border with China. But a comparative analysis of the capacities on either side indicates that India has a lot to catch up on, to be able to match Chinese comprehensive power along the LAC. In such a scenario, the focus on research and development in drones, upcoming induction of indigenous Zorawar tanks, expanding endeavours to develop border infrastructure by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), and multiplying troop deployment, are positive milestones on the long road from Galwan.</p>

<p>The decision was communicated through an official statement by the Navy, which highlighted the evolving nature of the force and the need to let go of colonial vestiges. The Navy said that the practice of wielding a baton as a "symbol of authority" is seen as a relic of the colonial past and no longer relevant.</p>

<p>“With the passage of time, carrying of batons by naval personnel has become a norm. The symbolism of authority or power pot heated through the holding of a baton is a colonial legacy that is out of place in a transformed navy of Amrit Kaal.”&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Ceremonial baton placement&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>As per the changes, the carrying of batons by all personnel, including those from the provost, will cease immediately.</p>
