Amidst continuing raging nationwide outrage over the brutal sexual assault and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Prime Minister Narendra Modi,&nbsp; on Sunday (August 25), said that crime against women is&nbsp;an "unpardonable sin".

Speaking at Lakhpati Didi Sammelan in Maharashtra’s Jalgaon, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, "Along with increasing the strength of mothers, sisters, and daughters, their safety is also the priority of the country. I have raised this issue repeatedly from the Red Fort. Today, be it any state of the country, I understand the pain and anger of my sisters and daughters."

Besides, the Calcutta High Court also denied a request to block a planned protest march to the West Bengal state secretariat on August 27, by pointing out that the fundamental right to peaceful protest cannot be restricted.

PM Modi says crime against women unpardonable sin, guilty shouldn't be spared

The Union Cabinet led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a Unified Pension Scheme (UPS) on Saturday (Aug 24), which aims to increase the retirement benefits for 23 lakh central government employees.

The UPS has certain elements of both the Old Pension Scheme (OPS) and the current National Pension Scheme (NPS) that will benefit the employees. The scheme will be effective from April 1, 2025, and will include assured pensions, family pensions, and minimum pensions to provide financial security for government workers after retirement.

Central government employees will be given the option to choose between UPS and NPS. Employees who are already NPS subscribers will be given an option to switch to UPS.

<h2>Key features of the Unified Pension Scheme</h2>

Assured pension

Employees who subscribe to the UPS with at least 25 years of service will get an assured pension of 50% of their average basic pay over the last 12 months before retirement. Other employees having a minimum of 10 years of service will be eligible for a pension proportionate to their tenure.

Assured family pension

UPS provides an assured family pension after their demise, according to which the employee's spouse will be given 60% of the pension drawn before their death.

Assured minimum pension

Employees who retire before completing 25 years of their service will be assured a minimum pension of&nbsp; Rs 10,000 monthly after retirement with a minimum of 10 years of service.

Both serving and retired employees under the UPS will get Dearness Relief based on the All India Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers (AICPI-IW).&nbsp;

Lump sum payment on superannuation

Apart from the assured pension, subscribers of UPS will also receive a lump sum payment on superannuation along with gratuity. This payment will amount to 1/10th of the employee's monthly emoluments, which includes pay and Dearness Allowance, as of the date of retirement for every completed six months of service.&nbsp;

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Sunday (Aug 25) raided 15 locations, including the residential premises of former RG Kar Medical College principal Sandip Ghosh, in connection to the horror murder-rape of a trainee doctor.&nbsp;

After the murder-rape incident first came to light, a case alleging financial irregularities at the Kolkata hospital has been&nbsp;filed against Ghosh, who seemingly has close relations with the upper echelons of Trinamool Congress (TMC) -- the ruling party in the state.&nbsp;

According to reports, the hospital&nbsp;under Ghosh was allegedly carrying out various illegal activities, that even included selling dead bodies.&nbsp;RG Kar Medical College's former deputy superintendent Akhtar Ali claimed that Ghosh was carrying out the trafficking of medical supplies and biomedical waste to Bangladesh.

<h2>Polygraph test of main accused underway</h2>

While the CBI raids took place early on Sunday morning, the polygraph test of the main accused, Sanjay Roy, began&nbsp;around noon in Kolkata.&nbsp;

According to sources, this test involves three types of questions: relevant, irrelevant, and control questions. Some of the questions being posed to Roy are:&nbsp;

	<li>Have you ever lied?</li>
	<li>Did you rape the victim?</li>

	<li>Did you flee the hospital after the murder?</li>
	<li>Have you ever molested the victim before?</li>
	<li>Do you watch pornographic films?</li>
	<li>Did you visit a red-light area before the murder?</li>
	<li>Was your Bluetooth device broken in the seminar hall?</li>
	<li>Have you answered all the questions correctly?</li>
</ul>

An expert team from Delhi arrived in the capital city of West Bengal on Saturday (Aug 24) and conducted tests on four others. A total of seven people will be taking the polygraph test, which is expected to be completed on Sunday itself.&nbsp;

Roy, the main accused in this case, was on Friday sent to 14 days of judicial custody. He will remain in custody until September 6, under the supervision of CBI.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, who is on an official visit to Washington, on Friday, said India and the US, together, are a formidable force which can ensure peace, prosperity and stability in the world.

While interacting with the Indian diaspora, Singh described India and the US as “natural allies”, which are “destined to be strong partners”, and this collaboration is growing continuously.

“India and the US are the two forces which can bring peace, prosperity and stability in the world,” the defence minister said.

Singh, who arrived here on Thursday on a four-day official visit, re-asserted the fact that under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India’s stature has grown on the global stage.

“Earlier, India’s words at international fora were not heeded; but today, the whole world listens carefully,” he said.

Singh pointed out that before 2014, India was among the ‘Fragile Five’ nations, as coined by investment firm Morgan Stanley, and today it finds itself among the ‘Fabulous Five’ economies of the world.

He cited the firm’s recent report, which says that India will become the third-largest economy by 2027. He stressed that the government’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic ensured that the Indian economy was not adversely impacted as compared to other countries.

Singh highlighted the fact that the government has successfully brought 25 crore people above poverty line. He added that as per the latest data, retail inflation fell to a five-year low of 3.54 per cent&nbsp;and foreign exchange reserves have reached an all-time high of USD 675 billion.

The defence minister enumerated the steps taken by the government to achieve ‘Aatmanirbharta’ in defence, including the notification of Positive Indigenisation Lists comprising over 5,000 items. He emphasised that the consistent efforts are being made to ensure that state-of-the-art defence items are manufactured on Indian soil by domestic companies.

Singh acknowledged the fact that the defence exports, which were Rs 600 crore before the current government came to power, have now risen significantly to over Rs 21,000 crore. He added that due to the measures taken to promote innovation, the number of start-ups in the country rapidly increased to 1.20 lakh from around 400 in 2014. He credited these achievements to the willpower along with the policies and planning of the government.

Tafazul Islam, the prime accused who was arrested on Friday (Aug 23), allegedly escaped the police custody and jumped into pond.

For the unversed, a 14-year-old girl was allegedly gangraped by three persons in Assam's Nagaon district on Thursday (Aug 22), triggering massive protests by people on the streets.

The girl was left unconscious and injured on the roadside near a pond, before being rescued by locals who informed police.

The police informed, the girl was allegedly assaulted and raped by three persons while she was returning home from her tuition on her bicycle in Dhing area around 8pm on Thursday.

Police said accused Islam was taken to the location where the crime was allegedly committed for a re-creation of the crime scene around 3.30am.

"The accused escaped from police custody and jumped into the pond. A search operation was launched immediately and his body was recovered after nearly two hours," police added.

Police arrested one suspect, detained another, and continued searching for a third in connection with the crime. The director general of police reviewed the investigation on Friday.

Swapnaneel Deka, superintendent of police of Nagaon district told news agency ANI that when Tafazul Islam was taken to the spot for investigation where the incident took place, the prime accused tried to flee and jumped into a pond located nearby the site.

Addressing the media, Sarma added, “Whenever a heinous crime against women occurs, swift and decisive action must be taken. Public perception is crucial; the government must demonstrate a firm commitment to justice. Laxity breeds public anger. In such cases, aggressive measures are essential. The government in Bengal failed to meet this standard, leading to widespread public outrage."

Assam minor gang rape case: Accused escapes police custody, found dead in pond

Ahead of the assembly polls in the northern Indian state of Haryana, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has urged the Election Commission of India (ECI) to amend the election schedule, citing holidays.

Haryana BJP chief Mohan Lal Badoli wrote a letter to the ECI, saying people may go on vacation in the week before and after October 1, which might impact voter turnout.

The ECI earlier declared that polls will be held in Haryana on October 1 and the results will be out on October 4.

The BJP has now asked the ECI to fix a new date.

"We have reasoned that the Assembly election date of October 1 is preceded by holiday on weekend and followed by some holidays which may hit the voting percentage as people tend to go on vacation on long weekends which are followed by holidays," said Varinder Garg, a member of the BJP's state election management committee.

"Saturday (September 28) is a holiday for many, while Sunday is a holiday. October 1 is a poll holiday in the state which is followed by Gandhi Jayanti on October 2, which is a holiday and October 3 is also a holiday on account of Maharaja Agrasen Jayanti," he said.

In the new pension scheme, 50 per cent of the average basic pay drawn over the last 12 months prior to superannuation/retirement for a minimum qualifying service of 25 years will be considered the average pension.

The Assured Family Pension for the employees will be 60 per cent&nbsp;of the pension immediately before her/his demise.

Assured Minimum Pension of Rs 10,000 per month on superannuation after a minimum of 10 years of service.

These firms had Chinese directors whose proceeds of crime were generated using mobile apps.

As per reports, these apps were systematically working to push victims into a vicious cycle of debt trap.

"My father got me married with the consent of both the parties and by spending more than his means," said Maryam in a video, according to the news agency PTI. “After the marriage, when I went out in the city, I liked the roads of Ayodhya Dham, the beautification, the development and the atmosphere there. On this, I praised Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in front of my husband.”

Based on the east coast of India in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, ICGS Sujay operates under the operational command of Commander Coast Guard Region (East). The vessel is equipped with modern weapon systems, advanced sensors, and state-of-the-art navigation and communication systems, including an integral helicopter. Offshore patrol vessel Sujay has successfully undertaken various coast guard operations, including coastal security, IMBL/EEZ surveillance, counter-transnational crimes, and Maritime Search and Rescue (SAR) and pollution response operations.

National Space Day 2024: India is celebrating its first National Space Day on Friday (Aug 23) to commemorate the historic landing of moon mission Chandrayaan-3.&nbsp;

Last year on August 23, India became the fourth country to land on the moon and the first to reach the southern side of the moon. To honour this landmark achievement of India and its scientists, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced this day as “National Space Day.”

PM Modi shared a heartfelt greeting of the day to Indian scientists and fellow Indians and urged everyone to mark this day “with great pride in our nation’s achievements in the space sector.”

Additionally, mobile exhibitions named "Space on Wheels" will tour universities and colleges throughout the country. This initiative aims to educate students about ISRO’s activities and India’s pioneering space missions.

ISRO Chairman S Somanath praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his crucial role in advancing India's space sector. In an interview with ANI on National Space Day, Somanath highlighted recent policy reforms and initiatives under PM Modi’s leadership.

"PM Modi's leadership has been crucial in several key policy interventions in India's space sector. As Prime Minister, Modi has not only created but also implemented policies through the governmental system," said Somanath.

Chandrayaan-3 was a follow-on mission to Chandrayaan-2 to demonstrate end-to-end capability in safe landing and roving on the lunar surface. It consisted of Lander and Rover configuration. The mission was launched by LVM3 from SDSC SHAR, Sriharikota.&nbsp;

There were three mission objectives of Chandrayaan-3- to demonstrate a safe and soft landing on the Lunar surface, to demonstrate Rover roving on the moon and to conduct in-situ scientific experiments. The mission achieved the first objective successfully on 23 August 2023, after which the entire nation broke into celebration and patriotic fervour.&nbsp;
