In the same month, 47 Indians who were forced to run dating app scams were rescued in Laos.

Hundreds of them have been rescued so far by the Indian government or international organisations and NGOs.

Two persons were arrested on Tuesday for allegedly placing an iron rail piece on a railway track in an attempt to derail a train for robbing passengers in Gujarat's Botad district, police said.

The accused, Ramesh Salia and Jayesh Bavalia, allegedly placed a four to five-foot-long iron rail piece vertically on the track near Kundli village on September 25, an official said.

The duo allegedly planned to derail coaches and rob passengers as they were facing financial difficulties, he said. Botad is around 150 km from Ahmedabad.

As per a release issued by the Botad district police, the accused watched YouTube videos about ways to derail trains before committing the crime.

The engine of the Okha-Bhavnagar passenger train came to a halt after hitting the iron rail piece in the early hours of September 25. The accused, who are farm labourers, were lying in wait in a cotton field nearby, they said.

However, when their plan failed, they fled on their two-wheeler, police said.

Considering the serious nature of the crime, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and Gujarat Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) were called in for the probe with the local police teams, police said.

The police used technical surveillance and human intelligence to zero in on the two men, who went into hiding, they said.

The duo were subsequently apprehended and interrogated, police said.

The men were booked under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita, Railways Act and Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act, the release said.

The incident came a few days after three railway employees were arrested in Surat district for alleged track tampering and alerting authorities about a "sabotage attempt" to take credit for averting a possible tragedy.

A bench of Justices BR Gavai and KV Viswanathan criticised the chief minister, saying there is no conclusive proof yet to substantiate that contaminated ghee was used in preparation of prasadam laddoos.

It questioned the need to make a public statement on the issue when a probe had already been ordered by the state into the allegations.

The bench also asked Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Centre, to seek instructions from the Central government on whether an independent investigation is required and posted the matter to October 3 at 3.30 pm.

"We are prima facie of the view that when the investigation was under process, it was not appropriate for the high constitutional authority to make a statement that can affect the sentiments of crores of people. In that view of the matter, we find that it would be appropriate if the Solicitor General assists us on whether the SIT by the state should continue or the investigation should be by an independent agency," said the bench in it's order.

The apex court was hearing a batch of petitions seeking court-monitored investigation into the allegations of use of animal fat to make laddoos to serve as prasadam at the Sri Venkateswara Swamy Temple in Tirumala, Andhra Pradesh, where Lord Venkateswara is worshipped.

During the hearing, the top court asked the Andhra Pradesh government whether the alleged adulterated laddoos had been sent for testing.

Senior advocate Siddhartha Luthra, appearing for Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD), said that there were complaints regarding the quality of laddoos and possible contamination. He also said that the lab report of the NDDB showed contamination and the nature of contamination was under inquiry.

WION: India has seen many queer politicians, like Harish Iyer, Shabnam Mausi, and Madhu Bai Kinnar. Why did the media headline you as India’s ‘first gay politician’?&nbsp;

Gawande: “Today queerness sells, so let it sell. It is misleading because I am not the first queer politician. The headlines are always decided by the newspaper and not by me. I think there is a certain way in which queerness is commoditised. I am the first gay national spokesperson of a political party so, some of those headlines were fair. It is just that a certain kind of queerness sells. When there is a trans-woman from a non-dominant caste community, it does not sell and that is the kind of conversation we need to have.”&nbsp;

WION:&nbsp;Is India behind the world in queer rights?

Gawande: “The levels of transphobia today in large parts of the West are much higher than here. In the Netherlands, the far-right has taken up queer discourse and become an Islamophobic queer rights movement.”&nbsp;

India is on its journey because in this country queerness is not yet a dominant identity factor.”&nbsp;

WION: You’ve spoken about how queers cannot be a vote bank in India. Why?&nbsp;

Gawande: “How can they be? Today, there are queer Adivasis, Dalits, and Muslims too. Those identities are under attack to a much larger extent today. Queerness in India does not have to make itself separate. When you go to the Court, you have to prove that queer people are different. But when you go into the political arena, you have to create solidarities with the differently abled communities, climate justice warriors, and those who are fighting hatred on all fronts.’&nbsp;

Gawande: “The incident is deeply shocking. It has stirred the collective conscience of this country. There is a valid critique to be levelled as to why only this incident. Does the sort of privilege of the victim matter? But I think we are looking at a bigger problem. We have an epidemic of sexual violence in this country. Our response to RG Kar and sexual violence has been “chauraahe pe lagaake, pathar maar ke maar daalo (drag them to the public square and stone them to death!.) That is not the right response.

WION: Why?

Gawande: “Because the perpetrators of sexual violence are not the exception, they are the norm. More than half of sexual violence is perpetrated by people who are known to the victim. You cannot exceptionalise it. That is not the solution!”&nbsp;

WION: Queer people have a greater mental health burden than straight people. Why?&nbsp;

Gawande: “That is the queer tax! You have to pay more to get a therapist. You have to pay more to travel by Uber at night because you don’t know if you’re safe on the metro. Queer people have to pay more to lead their regular lives. That is something that the government needs to acknowledge. This is a question of disparity of access to public spaces.”&nbsp;

WION: NCRB data showed that the rate at which young people are killing themselves is more than India's population growth rate. If you become an MP, how will you tackle this?

Gawande: “In 2020, I went with Supriya tai [Supriya Sule] to meet Ajit Pawar and I said that we need to have a helpline for LGBTQ+ kids and the immediate answer was yes, because that is something everyone can get behind. We cannot let our kids down.”&nbsp;

The couple had checked into a hotel in the Navsari district on September 23. During intercourse, the woman started experiencing heavy bleeding. The police said that they started panicking, but the boy, instead of calling an ambulance or taking the woman to a hospital, started googling ways to stop the bleeding.

He tried using a piece of cloth, but the woman fainted soon after. The boy then called one of his friends to the hotel. They took the woman to a private hospital, from where they were referred to the Civil Hospital.

The woman was declared dead at the hospital. The boy called the girl's parents, but she had already passed away by the time they reached.&nbsp;

Her body was sent to Surat Civil Hospital for a forensic test and the boyfriend was arrested. A case has been filed against him for negligence.

The postmortem report revealed that a serious injury to the woman's genital area during sex led to heavy bleeding, because of which she passed away.

District Superintendent of Police, Sushil Agarwal, stated that the boy has been charged under Sections 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and 238 (causing evidence to disappear) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

More details will be revealed upon further investigation.

The deceased, Tarun Saxena, said in his suicide note that he was taking his own life because of work pressure and the stress he was subjected to by his seniors in the past two months. Reports suggest that his managers were pressurising him because of his unmet targets and threatened to deduct his salary.

“I am very tense about the future. I have lost my ability to think. I am going…. I have not slept for 45 days. I have hardly eaten. I am under a lot of stress. Senior managers are pressuring me to meet targets at any cost or quit,” Saxena wrote in his suicide note, as per NDTV.

“You all take care of Megha, Yatharth and Pihu. Mummy, Papa, I have never asked for anything, but am doing so now. Please get the second floor built so that my family can stay comfortably,” the suicide note reads.

Now his father has spoken on the matter, confirming that his son was facing torturous conditions at work.

"They also threatened to sack him. He was working in Bajaj Finance for the last 8 years."

He added that Tarun was forced to pay EMIs to the company from his own pocket when he failed to recover them from the customers who had taken loans.

"He had to pay from his pocket for not meeting the target of loan recovery from customers. He was in a lot of tension," he stated.

Tarun's wife has now filed a case against the two seniors.

SSP Jhansi Sudha Singh told reporters, "Tarun Saxena committed suicide and the cause of death is hanging. He left a suicide note in which he named and made allegations against his senior at Bajaj Finance."

"A case has been filed under sections of Abetment to Suicide by the wife of the deceased. Two persons have been named in the case," she added.

Tarun was found hanging by their house help in the morning on Monday (Sep 30). She immediately informed Saxena’s cousin, Gaurav Saxena, about the incident. He rushed to their home and unlocked the room in which Tarun had locked his wife and children before taking the drastic step.

Gaurav Saxena told reporters, "Tarun was mentally tortured by his regional manager Prabhakar Mishra and national manager Vaibhav Saxena. They even hurled abuses at him during a virtual conference. He was frustrated the entire night and ultimately took this extreme step on Sunday."

The apex court was hearing a batch of pleas alleging that&nbsp;properties, including of those accused of crime, were being demolished in several states.

"We are a secular country and our direction will be for all, irrespective of religion or community. If there is any religious structure in the middle of the road, be it gurudwara or dargah or temple, it cannot obstruct the public," the two-judge bench of Justice BR Gavai and Justice KV Viswanathan said.

Justice Gavai declared that the court would not intervene in the case of encroachments into public lands, streets and roads. He clarified&nbsp;that the SC has no intention to protect encroachments on public roads, streets, or footpaths.&nbsp;

The court has long maintained that&nbsp;no property should be demolished without its approval, except in cases where the structures are illegal and located on public roads or footpaths.

It also extended its previous stay on demolitions and reserved the judgment. Last month, the court, issuing a stern warning to state government said that&nbsp;even a single case of unlawful demolition goes against the principles of the Indian Constitution.

Bajaj employee dies by suicide, cites ‘work pressure’ and ‘no sleep for 45 days’ for his extreme step

A very distressing incident has emerged out of the Indian state of Punjab where an advocate allegedly thrashed his 73-year-old mother brutally in the presence of his wife and son. Once the CCTV footage went viral, the incident gained massive attention on social media platform X with users showing outrage over the son's vile actions which showed no remorse towards the elderly woman.&nbsp;

The revelation of this appalling incident was made when the victim's daughter, Deepshikha, reportedly became suspicious of her mother's well-being. To investigate her concerns, Deepshikha reviewed the security camera footage installed in her mother's room, ultimately unveiling the shocking abuse.

As a result of the evidence, the son involved in the shocking incident has reportedly been placed under arrest.

Ankur Verma, a lawyer by profession, was taken into custody following the emergence of damning evidence from a CCTV camera he had personally installed in his mother's room.

The victim, Asha Rani, resided in Ropar, Punjab, with her son, daughter, and daughter-in-law after her husband's unfortunate demise due to heart attack.

Asha Rani had confided in her daughter about the alleged abuse she endured at the hands of her son, Ankur, and his wife, Sudha.

The daughter, Deepshikha, managed to obtain footage from the hidden camera, leaving her profoundly shocked by the distressing scenes it captured.

The video showed the victim's grandson pouring water onto Asha Rani's mattress, subsequently blaming her for wetting the bed.

When Ankur and Sudha heard the story painted by their son, an unspeakable and horrifying sequence of events unfolded in the room which can send shivers down anyone's spine.

Ankur was seen brutally assaulting his mother, who simply lay&nbsp;in the bed defenseless.

After Ankur left the room, Sudha and their grandson entered.

Later, Ankur was again seen grabbing his mother by the hair and continued to assault her while his wife and son left the scene.

Acting upon a complaint filed by Deepshikha, a team of police officers, accompanied by representatives from a non-governmental organization (NGO), arrived at Asha Rani's residence and rescued her on Saturday (Oct 28).

During the intervention, Ankur attempted to justify his actions by claiming that he had been attending to his mother.

He also alleged that his mother "wasn't in the right mental state."&nbsp;

As a result of the evidence, the son involved in the shocking incident has reportedly been placed under arrest. Efforts are underway to trace the man and pull him out of the sea,” said a&nbsp;police officer.&nbsp;

During their investigation, officers examined Chakravarty’s vehicle, which led them to identify him and learn that he lived in Parel with his wife and daughter.&nbsp;

“We called his family to the police station. During the inquiry, Chakravarty’s wife revealed that he was under tremendous work pressure,” revealed one of the police officers investigating the incident.&nbsp;

Police further added, “We have examined Chakravarty’s mobile phone but have not found any notes indicating his intentions. Chakravarty was working as a manager at the bank’s Hutatma Chowk office in Fort. Over the weekend, he had even taken his family for a getaway to Lonavala. On Monday, he informed his family he was going to the office but instead went to Atal Setu and jumped off the bridge.”

Search teams have been deployed to locate the man in the sea.&nbsp;

This is not the first incident at Atal Setu, previously, five cases of suicide attempts have taken place. In most of the cases, the victims&nbsp;were&nbsp;saved due to timely police intervention.

Details of the incident

According to police reports, the 44-year-old victim, a resident of Punjabi Colony in Ulhasnagar, was abducted on June 20 while he was out shopping. The accused asked him to increase the divorce settlement amount to ₹15 lakh or ₹20 lakh. When he expressed his inability to pay the amount, they allegedly forced him into a vehicle and took him to an abandoned house.

The high court of the southern Indian state of Karnataka on Monday halted the ongoing probe against Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in the electoral bond extortion case. The bench of Justice M Nagaprasanna noted that permitting investigation in this case will be abuse of process of law “till the statement of objection are filed by respondent.” “In that light I deem it appropriate to interdict further investigation in the matter till next date of hearing," the justice added.

The matter is listed for hearing on October 22 now.

While staying the probe for now, the High Court noted, “It is only then prima facie extortion can be established against the accused. It is a well settled principle that criminal law can be set in motion by anyone, but there are provisions in IPC that they can be set in motion by only aggrieved. It is not his (complainants) case that he is put under fear. The complainant in the case at hand wants to project Section 383 of the IPC; he is an aggrieved party, which he is not.”

Earlier, a lower court in Bengaluru had instructed the police to file an FIR against Sitharaman and several leaders affiliated with the national ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

It accused them of pressuring businesses to buy electoral bonds worth thousands of crores, reportedly using Enforcement Directorate (ED) raids as a means of coercion. The complaint further alleges that these bonds were cashed by BJP leaders at both national and state levels.

The scheme, according to the complaint, was used to gather illegal funds for political gain, with senior BJP figures, including Sitharaman, allegedly playing a role.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, responding to the case, demanded Sitharaman’s resignation and called for a report on the matter within three months.

The BJP had dismissed the allegations as politically motivated.

"The US Mission to India has already surpassed one million nonimmigrant visa applications for the second consecutive year. &nbsp;During our student visa season this summer, we continued to process record numbers, and all first-time student applicants were able to obtain an appointment at one of our five consular sections around India," a post shared by the US Embassy in India said.

As per the statement from the US Mission, in 2024 so far, over 1.2 million Indians have travelled to the United States, marking a 35% rise compared to the same time frame in 2023. Currently, at least six million Indians hold non-immigrant visas to visit the US, and every day, the US Mission is issuing thousands more, the statement added.

The bench told the state government's lawyer that lab tests revealed the ghee tested was already rejected. The case was heard by Justices BR Gavai and KV Viswanathan, who were hearing several petitions seeking a court-observed investigation into the controversy surrounding the Tirupati laddoos. The Hon'ble Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh had gone in public making a statement that the animal fat was being used to make Tirupati laddus under the previous regime,” the Court pointed out. “However, some press reports also show that the Chief Executive Officer of the Tirupati Tirumala Devasthanam had also made a statement that such an adulterated ghee was never used. The petitions have been filed seeking various prayers including an independent enquiry and directions for regulating the affairs of the religious trusts and specifically the manufacture of prasadam,” it added. Naidu vs Reddy on Tirupati laddoo controversy Earlier this month, Andhra Pradesh CM, N. Chandrababu Naidu, alleged that animal fat was used in preparing the sacred prasadam. He said that during Jagan Mohan Reddy's rule, adulterated ghee had been used for making the laddoos at Tirupati temple. The Andhra Pradesh government set up a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the matter. Former CM Jagan Mohan Reddy denied Naidu's claims, accusing him of 'lying' about the Tirupati laddoo prasadam. The government is trying to obstruct my upcoming visit to the Tirumala temple. Police have issued notices to YSRCP leaders across the state regarding the temple visit. The notice states that the visit to the Tirumala temple is not permitted, and the programme organised by YSRCP does not have the necessary approval.
