All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) President Asaduddin Owaisi on Tuesday asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for data about the number of Muslims recruited in the state and central services over the last four years.

In an interview to ANI, Owaisi said "In the last four years, how many jobs have been given to Muslims in CRPF, CISF, RAF, BSF, etc? In Prime Minister`s 15-point program, it`s said in point 10 that for recruitment to state and central services or police, the government will be advised to give special consideration to minorities."

He further claimed that Minority Affairs Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi had lied about the percentage of Muslim representation.

"Mr Naqvi lied that the percentage of Muslim representation has increased. So I have exposed these wrongful claims of the government," he said.

Echoing a similar opinion, senior Congress leader Husain Dalwai asserted that Prime Minister Modi should make sure that Indian Muslims have the right to be a part of the military forces.

With reference to Congress President Rahul Gandhi`s recent comment on Muslims, Owaisi said an inappropriate message was being sent out to the community.

"The most unfortunate thing that has come out of the recent controversy of Muslims not being part of this party or that party, regarding statements of Congress chief and Prime Minister, is what message you are sending to the Muslims? That usage of the word `Muslim` will lead to polarisation, that it`s a dirty word?" he asked.

Rahul has been facing flak from the Opposition for saying that `Congress is a Muslim party`, which Urdu daily Inquilab claimed, he made at a meeting with Muslim intellectuals and activists on July 11.&nbsp

The government today said it was “closely engaged” with the US on all issues relating to the movement of Indian professionals, including under the H-1B visa programme, and had emphasised to that country that this was a mutually-beneficial partnership which should be nurtured.&nbsp

Minister of State for External Affairs V K Singh, in a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha, said Indian skilled professionals had contributed to the growth and development of the US economy and helped the US retain its competitive edge and innovation advantage.

Asked whether there had been any major change in the H1-B visa policy by the US and whether the government was keeping a close eye on the issue, Singh said, “Government of India has closely engaged with the US Administration and the Congress on all issues relating to movement of Indian professionals, including under the H-1B visa programme. “In our engagements, we have emphasised that this has been a mutually-beneficial partnership which should be nurtured.”

He said that in the US Congress, seven bills relating to the H-1B visa programme had been introduced by individual Congressmen and senators, but none of these bills had been passed. He said that on the executive side, on April 18, 2017, President Donald Trump issued an Executive Order titled ‘Buy American and Hire American’, which required different arms of the US administration to suggest reforms to the H-1B visa programme.

“This process is still underway. The US administration has also taken some steps towards stricter enforcement and prevention of abuse of the work visa programmes,” he said. Responding to another question on whether the government was aware that there were a large number of Indian green card applicants and whether the US government was putting restrictions on issuing of green cards to foreign nationals, Singh said green cards given to Indians nationals in FY 2016 was 64,687.

According to the information released by the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), as of May 2018, there are a total of 306,601 pending green card applications filed by Indian nationals under the employment-based preference category, Singh said. Information on green card applicants for other categories, including dependent family members of the primary beneficiaries of employment-based preference Category, was not available in public domain, he said.

Singh also asserted that no comprehensive changes had been made by the US administration recently to the framework for the issuance of green cards to foreign nationals. To another question, Singh said the number of Indians who were stranded in foreign countries and had been rescued and brought back during April 2014 to December 2017 by the Indian government from countries affected by war, internal strife and natural disasters, was 1,01,336.

Responding to a separate question on whether a ship with 22 Indian crew members had gone missing from Benin coast in West Africa, Minister of State for External Affairs M J Akbar said merchant vessel M.T. Marine Express was released on February 6 after relentless pursuit of the matter by the Indian High Commission in Abuja, Nigeria, in collaboration with the navies of Nigeria, Benin and Ghana. The ship was released with all 22 Indian crew members safe and sound without any ransom paid, he said.&nbsp

India and Iran are exploring ways of working around US sanctions by making oil payments in the rupee and the euro, indicating some sort of trilateral cooperation between India, Iran and the European Union.&nbsp;

India has agreed to allow Iran's Pasargad Bank to open a branch in Mumbai. Payments for Iranian oil will be made here after the first instalment of US sanctions kick in first on August 6 and the remainder on November 4.

In an exclusive interview, Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told WION that Tehran wants to be "a reliable supplier of oil to india".&nbsp;

The US recently told India to "<a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/uss-haley-tells-india-to-rethink-ties-with-iran-147736">rethink</a>" its ties with Iran. But India has close and historical ties with Iran, and it gets a large portion of its oil from the West Asian country.&nbsp;

The foreign ministers of India and Iran meanwhile will meet in Tehran in November.&nbsp;

WION's Ramesh Ramachandran asked Aragchi how the India-Iran talks on oil India went.&nbsp;
&nbsp;
Aragchi replied that Iran and India have had "good cooperation" earlier too. That previous sanctions did not put a stop to Iran-India ties and that Iran's policy is to be a reliable supplier of oil.&nbsp;

Aragchi added that there were "different ideas under consideration" when it came to payments in rupees and Iranian rials. The Iranian deputy foreign minister said there was an "exchange of creative ideas" and that "we will update, adjust existing mechanisms".&nbsp;

Aragchi was also asked how the Chabahar port project — in which India is investing, in return for which Iran had offered India oil at lower prices — was coming along?

Chabahar is an example of "strategic cooperation", replied Aragchi, adding that "we are quite satisfied".&nbsp;

TRAI Chairman R S Sharma has said that apps should collect minimal data just as UIDAI does to give 12-digit Aadhar numbers to people.

Some apps are ridiculously collecting more-than-required data and the customers are unaware of what is being done with it, he said.

"For Aadhar enrollment, we collect just four sets of data - your name, date of birth and your communication address. Nothing more, nothing less. Similarly, every app must collect as much data as is required," Sharma said in an interview in Bengaluru on Tuesday

"Data minimisation should be one of the principles just as Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) adopts to collect data of people," he said.

TRAI had noted that the existing framework of data protection of telecom consumers is "not sufficient" and that all entities in the digital ecosystem which handle personal data should be brought under a data protection framework.

These recommendations are expected to have wide-reaching implications for tech titans like Apple and Facebook as well as apps like Paytm.

Asked whether the DoT has powers to create rules or regulations proposed by TRAI, Sharma said it is for the government to decide.

Asked whether TRAI has the power to implement such rules before the government legislates them, Sharma said he has the jurisdiction to protect consumers' interest in telecom sector.

Sharma said, there is a regulatory imbalance because these entities are not following any law and till the government comes up with a broad framework, it is but prudent to apply telecom rules on them.

Replying to a query, Sharma said TRAI is not for applying same encryption standards for different sectors including telecom or Aadhar.

"There are different rules for different sectors. For example in telecoms, the maximum encryption is proposed to be 40 bits. UIDAI has highest level of encryption where it is 2048 bits. So, what we are saying is that probably there is a need to have a general policy on encryption and we are not saying that we should apply same encryption standard," he said.&nbsp;

Sharma said the encryption standard should be proportional to the security that needs to be achieved.&nbsp;

The United Nations High Commission for Human Rights (UNHCR) on Tuesday quashed the criticisms levelled by the Indian authorities and media for its human rights report on Kashmir released recently and expressed "deep disappointment" over the reaction.

Citing Indian media outlets' accusations such as "Nefarious conspiracy", "Pakistan-authored report", "fallacious", "mala fide" and Indian authorities' reaction who dismissed the report as "fallacious, tendentious and motivated" against the UN Human Rights Office, the spokesperson for the UNHCR said that they were disappointed by the reactions.

"The report was developed through remote monitoring after the Indian and Pakistani authorities failed to grant us unconditional access to the region.&nbsp

Since the report was published, we have been deeply disappointed by the reaction of the Indian authorities, who dismissed the report as "fallacious, tendentious and motivated" without examining it and responding to the very serious concerns about the human rights situation in Indian-administered Kashmir and Pakistan-administered Kashmir as laid out in the report," the spokesperson said.

He also refuted reports in the Indian media that the High Commissioner, Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein, was in contact with a Canada-based imam of Pakistani descent, named Zafar Bangash, and that he had influenced the report.

"The High Commissioner has never spoken with Mr Bangash, and we are not aware of receiving any information from him, let alone using it, although it is possible he sent an email or letter and received a polite acknowledgment, as is the case with thousands of letters and emails sent to the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights," the spokesperson added.

Indian farmers in eastern Siliguri city of West Bengal have adopted Israeli based&nbsp;greenhouse technique to grow tomatoes during the rainy season.

The technique which requires warm and fairly dry weather in Israel is helping the farmers of the Siliguri region to crow crops during the rainy&nbsp;season.

Around 10,000 tomato saplings have been planted with the help of the technique which has resulted in the good quality products and is being sold in other parts of the country.

Technical officer of the district horticulture department Amarindra Pandey said that they took help from Israel greenhouse technology and installed high tech greenhouse as the farmers in the region were not able to produce tomatoes during the off seasons.

"During offseasons, in the months of rains and summers, the farmers are not able to produce tomatoes in the open fields so&nbsp;we import tomatoes from outside, from Nashik, Bengaluru. So we thought why not let the farmers adopt the same technology in north Bengal that is used (in other countries)." Pandey said.

Greenhouse technology is the process of creating a protected environment for cultivation. The vegetables and fruits grown under such circumstances provide high-quality produce. The Israeli greenhouse technique involves usage of developed computer hardware, software, automated water supply to plants and offers climate control.

Greenhouse technology is the process of creating a protected environment for cultivation. The vegetables and fruits grown under such circumstances provide high-quality produce. The Israeli greenhouse technique involves usage of developed computer hardware, software, automated water supply to plants and offers climate control.

Pilot missing after MiG-21 crashes in Himachal Pradesh

After Social Activist Swami Agnivesh was allegedly thrashed by workers of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), the youth wing of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), on Tuesday, he told the media that the attack was pre-planned and that he could have been murdered.

"Those arrested were allowed to walk free after few hours, this seems to be a drama. Inquiry ordered by DIG also seems fake. I demand an inquiry by a retired or sitting judge of Ranchi HC. This was an attempt to murder, I could've been murdered. This was pre-planned," he told ANI.&nbsp;

Agnivesh was in Jharkhand's Pakur to attend an event and was in his hotel when a mob, allegedly of the ABVP and Yuva Morcha workers, surrounded him.&nbsp;The workers were protesting against Agnivesh and were raising slogans like, "Agnivesh Go Back!!"

He had lodged a complaint with the Ranchi police stating that a couple of people belonging to RSS, and BJP Yuva Morcha (BJYM) entered the premises and assaulted him.&nbsp;

Reacting to the incident, Agnivesh said that there was no police personnel present outside the hotel and that he wanted to establish a dialogue with the mob. However as soon as he stepped out of the hotel, he claimed that the mob began thrashing him.

"There was no police personnel present there. Even when I repeatedly called the Superintendent of Police and the District Magistrate, they didn't turn up. I told the mob that there was no need to protest, they can come in and talk. No one came in at that time. When I left the hotel they suddenly attacked and hurled abuses at me," he was quoted as saying by ANI.

Moments after the incident, the state government headed by Raghubar Das provided the security to Agnivesh.

Condemning the attack, Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday took a jibe at the BJP in the form of a 'pop quiz' on micro-blogging site Twitter. Rahul Gandhi posted a news report of the incident with his tweet early morning.

However, the Jharkhand wing of the BJP condemned the action and said that the people involved in the incident were not workers of the party.

"They weren't workers of our party. We condemn this but his track record is such that this reaction doesn't come as surprise. Pakur has recently been in news for religious conversion," said Jharkhand BJP spokesperson, P. Sahdeo to ANI.
