A noted South Indian female actress, who was allegedly sexually assaulted in a moving car last year, today resigned from AMMA (Association of Malayalam Movie Artists), alleging that it had failed to stand by her during the crisis.

Extending their solidarity with her, three prominent Malayalam actresses -- Remya Nambeesan, Reema Kallingal and Geethu Mohandas -- also announced their decision to quit AMMA.

Their resignation, announced through the Facebook page of Women in Cinema Collective (WCC), came days after a general body meeting of AMMA reportedly decided to take back actor <a href="http://www.wionews.com/south-asia/malayali-star-dileep-arrested-in-malayali-actress-molestation-case-17799">Dileep</a>, an accused in the sexual assault case, into its fold.

A police officer, who was&nbsp;overseeing the investigation in the case, told PTI that Dileep was arrested for the second time after questioning in view of the fresh revelations in the case.

In her Facebook post, the actress said she had decided to quit AMMA, not in protest against its decision to take back the accused in her case, but due to 'bitter experiences' with AMMA.

She alleged Dileep had spoilt her chances of acting in many films in the past and that AMMA had not taken any action against him, though she had lodged a complaint.

The organisation even tried to shield him after the sexual assault on her, she alleged.

"I am quitting as I feel that there is no meaning in further associating myself with this organisation," she said.

Announcing their decision to quit AMMA, the other actresses alleged the organisation did not stand with the victim, a member, and had instead supported Dileep.

They said they were shocked to hear that AMMA general body had decided to take back the actor "in an undemocratic manner."

On February 17, the actress was molested in a moving car when she was travelling to Kochi for work. She was held captive in the car for almost two hours and molested by four men who also took her photographs on their cellphone. She was dumped near the house of a director, who informed the police.

Fortis Healthcare today said it has initiated legal action to recover about&nbspRs&nbsp500 crore of funds allegedly taken out of the company by its founders Malvinder and Shivinder Singh after an external investigation found "systemic lapses and override of controls" in the loan given.

The loans were given to its founders without board approval and enough collaterals, it added.

The firm, which is embroiled in a takeover battle, also annulled September 2016 appointment of former executive chairman Malvinder Singh as 'Lead: Strategic Initiatives' and will seek to recover payments made to him in that role as well as any company asset in his possession.

Singh brothers had resigned as directors from the board of Fortis Healthcare in February this year, following the Delhi High Court order upholding the&nbspRs&nbsp3,500 crore arbitral award in favour of Daiichi Sankyo.

Malvinder, who was appointed Lead Strategic Initiatives for five years with effect from October 1, 2016, at a remuneration of&nbspRs&nbsp12 crore per annum, had received&nbspRs&nbsp6 crore during 2016-17 and a proportionate sum for 2017-18.

Fortis, which had initiated an independent investigation through an external legal firm in February this year, following allegations of siphoning of cash by the founding family, said the probe report has been submitted to the Sebi and Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO) of the government.

Fortis said it has made provisions totalling around&nbspRs&nbsp580 crore in the fourth quarter of 2017-18 fiscal pertaining to the loans whose "recoverability is doubtful".

Under the founders, Fortis had loaned about&nbspRs&nbsp500 crore to certain corporate bodies, which subsequently became part of the Singhs' corporate group.

These inter-corporate deposits (ICDs) "were not given under the normal treasury operations" and were not specifically authorised by the board of the company, as per the summary of the probe report that Fortis disclosed in a regulatory filing.

"All ICDs from December 2011 were repaid until March 31, 2016. However, from the first quarter of the financial year 2016-17, it has been observed that a roll-over mechanism was devised whereby, ICDs were repaid by cheque by the borrower companies at the end of each quarter and fresh ICDs were released at the start of succeeding quarter under separately executed ICD agreements.

"In respect of the roll-overs of ICDs placed on July 1, 2017, with the borrower companies, Fortis Healthcare Ltd utilized the funds received from the company for the purposes of effecting roll-over," it said.

For these ICDs, "the investigation report revealed that there were certain systemic lapses and override of controls, including shortcomings in executing documents and creating a security charge," it said. "The charge was later on created in February 2018".

While the investigation report did not conclude on utilization of funds by the borrower companies, there are findings in the report to suggest that ICDs were utilised by the borrowers for granting/ repayment of loans to certain additional entities, including those whose current and/ or past promoters/ directors are known to/connected with the promoters of Fortis.

"The company has initiated legal action for recovery of these outstanding ICDs and other advances," Fortis said.

"The company having considered all necessary facts and taken into account legal advice that it has received, has decided to treat as 'non est' the Letter of Appointment dated September 27, 2016, as amended (LoA) issued to the erstwhile Executive Chairman in relation to his role as 'Lead: Strategic Initiatives' in Strategy Function.

"The company is in the process of taking suitable legal measures to recover the payments made to him under the LoA as also to recover all company assets in his possession," it added.

'Non est' is a legal phrase which is intended to mean 'does not exist'.

According to company's annual report for 2016-17, "Malvinder Mohan Singh, Executive Chairman did not draw any remuneration in his capacity of Executive Director during the FY 2016-17" but was "paid a remuneration of&nbspRs.&nbsp6 crore" for his role as Lead Strategic Initiatives.

In 2015-16, he was paid a remuneration of&nbspRs&nbsp1.59 crore and got&nbspRs&nbsp5.32 crore in the previous fiscal.

Commenting on the findings of the investigation, Fortis Healthcare Chairman Ravi Rajagopal said, "As a result of the Investigation Report issued by Luthra & Luthra, the company will appoint an external agency of repute to establish the highest level of governance and internal controls.

"In addition, our key priority is to ensure that the current bidding process is fair and transparent and maximises value for shareholders."

The board of directors of the company discussed the investigation report during their two-day meeting, which ended early this morning.

The development comes at a time when the cash-strapped healthcare chain is in the process of finding a new investor for which four parties -- Manipal-TPG, Munjals-Burmans combine, IHH Healthcare and KKR-backed Radiant Life Care -- are in the fray.

There was no direct relationship between borrower companies and Fortis Healthcare or its subsidiaries during December 2011 to December 14, 2017, but the report noted that the "promoters were evaluating certain transactions concerning certain assets owned by them for the settlement of ICDs, thereby indirectly implying some sort of affiliation with the borrower companies."&nbsp

As per the IT order, Sky Light Hospitality had earlier declared its income for AY 2010-11 to be Rs 36.9 lakh, a media report noted.

Talking about Vijay Mallya, Sambit Patra said that he has travelled a long way from being "the king of good times to poster boy of bank default."

"Fugitive tycoon Mallya was happy during the UPA era and sad now. Now you can judge how we treat a defaulter and how the UPA treated them," he said.

Patra also claimed that Vijay Mallya wrote a letter to P Chidambaram in 2013, seeking favours with regards to loan disbursals.

The Supreme Court today said issues related to the 2G spectrum case were "highly sensitive" and no officer investigating the matter should be "under any cloud" on a petition against an Enforcement Directorate (ED) officer probing the Aircel-Maxis case.

A vacation bench comprising Justices Arun Mishra and SK Kaul said that allegations levelled against senior ED official Rajeshwar Singh, who is probing the Aircel-Maxis deal case, were serious and required to be looked into.

Additional Solicitor General Vikramjit Banerjee, appearing for the Centre, told the court that the government was willing to investigate the allegations that Rajeshwar Singh amassed disproportionate assets and handed over a communication in a sealed cover to the bench.

The bench, after perusing the documents placed before it in a sealed cover, said sensitive issues were involved in the matter.

"As a matter of fact, when there are allegations, whether right or wrong against you (Singh) it has to be looked into," the bench said, adding "the things which have come before us are startling."

"You are simply an officer. You can't be given a blanket clean chit. Everybody is accountable. You must be accountable for any action. We need to ensure that you are accountable. We don't want to damage you or comment against you. There are very serious allegations against you," the bench told the officer.

Rajneesh Kapur, who claims to be an investigative journalist, has filed a petition in the top court seeking investigation against Rajeshwar Singh for allegedly amassing assets which are disproportionate to his known source of income.

Rajeshwar Singh has also filed a separate contempt petition against Mr Kapur and has claimed that attempts have been made to scuttle or delay the ongoing probe in the Aircel Maxis case.

BJP leader Subramanian Swamy also moved the top court seeking its permission to implead himself as a party in the petition filed by Mr Kapur.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has directed the state police not to conduct raids or serve warrants in the night hours, except in cases of serious crimes.

The chief minister has issued clear directives to the police against raids or serving notices in matters related to simple civil cases during the night hours, an official spokesman said.

The chief minister's instruction comes in the wake of a family in Ashiyana police station area here complaining of misbehaviour by policemen on Sunday, the spokesman said adding SP (North) Anurag Vats had been asked to conduct an inquiry into the episode and submit a report in two days.

A woman had tweeted to the chief minister complaining about the harassment faced by her family at the hands of local police at midnight over some dispute.

The chief minister also took note reports in a section of media of an incident of a woman being thrashed by lathis by two police constables during vehicle checking drive in the Gomti Nagar area and asked the ASP Lucknow Chakresh Misra to conduct an inquiry.

Both constables have since been placed under suspension, the spokesman added.&nbsp

The tussle between the two parties emerged as the alliance partners attempt at creating distinct identities.

The Congress is trying to safeguard programmes that it had undertaken during the Siddaramaiaha government. While the incumbent chief minister HD Kumaraswamy wants to create an impression by unveiling initiatives in his first budget.&nbsp;

Reports also suggest that the Congress party has been resisting the introduction of a new budget by the Kumaraswamy as Siddaramaiaha had already initiated a budget ahead of the assembly elections.&nbsp;

The chief minister has however stated that the Congress President Rahul Gandhi has assented to the introduction of a new budget.

Kumaraswamy's assurance to waive farmers loan is also considered as one of the reasons for the rising conflict between the alliance.

The first batch of Amarnath Yatra including a total of 2,995 pilgrims will leave for the Yatra on Thursday.

The pilgrims who were escorted by the Jammu police on Wednesday have already left the city.

The first batch of the pilgrims will move to the shrine in two groups. While the first group including 1,091 people left the Bhagwati Nagar Yatri Niwas and were proceeding to the Baltal base camp. The second group including 1,904 moved towards the Pahalgam base camp.

Nearly one lakh security personnel with an additional 213 companies of paramilitary forces &nbsphave been deployed to guard the pilgrims in the Amarnath Yatra.&nbsp

Governor N N Vohra, who is also chairman of the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board (SASB) manages the yatra and has worked to improve the security arrangements for the pilgrimage.

All the security forces have been put on alert by the officials. The officials have also asked the forces to be prepared for any militants attack.

"There are inputs that terrorists may strike at these camps as they know that the security grid for the Amarnath yatra has been made very strong and vigil is at an all-time high. Leaves of personnel have been slightly rationed to ensure that camps and other movements of forces are not rendered vulnerable during the two-months of the yatra time," the official said.

Special contingents of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and Jammu and Kashmir state rescue and relief squads have been placed at vital locations all along the yatra route to respond to any natural or man-made calamity.

Karisma Kapoor's 44th birthday started a day in advance and the celebrations continued till late night on Monday. The State Department Control Room has stated that over 200 houses have been completely damaged while more than 7,000 houses have been&nbsp;partially destroyed. The disaster has also destroyed crops accounting for more than Rs 80.29 crore.&nbsp;

An estimated destruction of Rs 98.19 crore has been caused due to the disaster in the state.

The government has set up relief camps at various districts to accommodate the people affected by the rains. About&nbsp;10 relief camps are temporarily rehabilitating over 300 people in the state.&nbsp;

The weather department has&nbsp;issued warnings for thunderstorms with gusty winds and heavy rainfall in the state till June 29.

The Indian Meteorological Department has also issued warnings to the fishermen.

According to officials, around 40-45 Indians are at a federal detention centre in the Southern American State of New Mexico while 52 Indians, mostly Sikhs and Christians, are held in Oregon. The Oregon federal judge has granted the detained immigrants being held in a Sheridan prison immediate access to legal aid, The Portland Mercury reported.

US District Judge Michael Simon yesterday granted an emergency order sought by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and the Innovation Law Lab, a nonprofit whose attorneys have been denied access to immigrants being held at the prison in Sheridan. “We are a nation under law,” said Simon.

“The rule of law is one of our most cherished principles. And because we are a nation that lives under law, the right to legal counsel is a right that has been recognised as required,” the judge said.

Simon approved an emergency temporary restraining order filed on Friday against the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) for violating the detainees’ constitutional rights to due process, the report said.

The ACLU of Oregon filed a lawsuit on Friday arguing the federal government is violating the constitutional rights of immigration detainees at the federal prison. According to immigration attorney Akansha Kalra the largest number of Indians who enter the US illegally are from Punjab and Gujarat.

US District Judge Michael Simon yesterday granted an emergency order sought by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and the Innovation Law Lab, a nonprofit whose attorneys have been denied access to immigrants being held at the prison in Sheridan. “We are a nation under law,” said Simon. “The rule of law is one of our most cherished principles. And because we are a nation that lives under law, the right to legal counsel is a right that has been recognised as required,” the judge said. Simon approved an emergency temporary restraining order filed on Friday against the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) for violating the detainees’ constitutional rights to due process, the report said. The ACLU of Oregon filed a lawsuit on Friday arguing the federal government is violating the constitutional rights of immigration detainees at the federal prison. According to immigration attorney Akansha Kalra the largest number of Indians who enter the US illegally are from Punjab and Gujarat. US President Donald Trump last week reversed his controversial decision on immigration by signing an executive order to end the separation of immigrant families on the US-Mexico border, following widespread protests against the move of his administration to separate children from their parents who illegally enter the country.
