In an interview, the star opened up about her role in the movie."I was really nervous for the role. But to play as Nargis Dutt is an honour for me. Also, Rajkumar Hirani supported me all through the movie as showed me various movies and documentaries which helped me to understand Nargis Ji," she said. 
 
Talking about Sanjay Dutt, the `Dil Se` star said, "I was always in awe of him. I am his big fan for a very long time. Baba has a heart of gold and has always been really humble."

She also opened up about working with Ranbir."He is a very great and hardworking actor. I could not differentiate between Sanjay and Ranbir during the shoot," she said. 
 
When asked about who could portray her on the silver screen, she took Kangana Ranaut and Alia Bhatt`s name. 
 
Meanwhile, Koirala is all set to work with Sanjay Dutt in their upcoming political drama, `Prasthaanam`, a remake of a 2010 Telugu film.

Cinema viewing has rapidly been changing in the country. Gone are the days when single theatres ruled the roost and watching a movie with a family was restricted to special occassions or strictly blockbusters. With the advent of multiplexes, choices increased many folds.&nbsp; 
 
Multiple cinemas ensured audiences had more options to choose from. In the last few years, with the advent of video streaming platforms like Netflix and Amazon ruling the market, audiences have now got access to blockbusters within the comforts of their home. The single screen theatres gave way to multiplexes some two decades back and now there are only a few single-screen theatres in urban areas. With the advent of digital platforms, will multiplexes and cinema halls, in general, cease to exist? PVR Cinemas' Joint Managing Director&nbsp;Sanjeev Bijli begs to differ as he maintains that the thrill of watching cinema on the big screen will always remain.&nbsp; 
 
"I feel people desire to watch a lot of the content that's available on Netflix on the big screen. Sure the comfort of the bedroom is there, but boredom and inertia sets in at home at some point and our normal social need to come out and watch a film with friends and family will always be there. So the relevance of cinema halls will always stay," said Bijli while speaking to WION.&nbsp; 
 
Bijli states that despite the presence of Netflix and Amazon, it is difficult to attract audiences to the theatres. "I don't think it is difficult at all to get people to the theatres despite the entry of digital platforms. If you see at the trends at Box Office in the last 2 years, it has been phenomenal. If you see box office results in China, or in America- they have gone up. Also because good content is been made available in theatres now- be it 'Raazi, 'Avengers or ' Black Panther' so people like to watch these epic films on the big screen at the earliest."&nbsp;

PVR pictures have pioneers of sorts in bringing in the multiplex culture to India. The group not only has catered to needs of regular Bollywood loving audience but also showcased Indies and critically accalimed international films for a niche audience.&nbsp; 
 
"We used to have Director's Rare in Delhi which used screened Indies. It was a good platform for a lot of small budgets, indpendent filmmakers to showcase their work- and did well too. We have stopped for the time being- hopefully, we can revive it soon," said Bijli.&nbsp; 
 
PVR has recently joined hands with Mumbai Academy of Moving Image aka MAMI and brought its year round program to Delhi. The Mumbai edition is already a hit and Bijli hopes for the same success in the capital as well.&nbsp;

"Our experience with MAMI has been great. Ever since it was re-launched, with so many people coming on board-the hourney has been enjoyable. We have collaborated with them in Mumbai and when the talks of taking it out of Mumbai came up, Delhi was obviously the natural choice. We had to plan a bit and figure out the logistics, but here we are!" says the Bijli with a welcoming smile.&nbsp; 
 
The Delhi Edition of MAMI will showcase critically acclaimed films from across the world to registered members at select PVR theatres in the capital.&nbsp; 
 
Bijli feels that MAMI is an important platform for cinema lovers. " It is so important to bring critically acclaimed international films to India., Because we all know about it, read about it and follow what happens at Sundance, Cannes and the films that are discussed. So it makes sense to bring them here as well. The guys at MAMI are doing a great job in bridging the gap." &nbsp; 
 
The Delhi edition opened with Wes Anderson's 'Isle Of Dogs' and much talked about horror drama 'Hereditary' in the first week of June. The Delhi edition has already registered more than 250 members and Bijli is hopeful that the numbers will go up in the coming weeks.

Not difficult to get people to the cinema halls in the era of video streaming apps, says PVR chief Sanjeev Bijli

Responding to the Congress over the attack on BJP after the release of the surgical strikes video, Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad has said that the Congress does not have any other aim other than "demoralising the army".

While addressing a press conference he said, "Is demoralising the Army, the only motive of Congress? We should rise above politics".

He further added that the terrorists in Pakistan will be very happy with the statements that the Congress party makes, and will soon give a certificate to them."

He said, "The people who will be most happy with the statement of Congress leaders are the terrorists in Pakistan. Congress will get a certificate from some terrorist organisations of Pakistan just like Ghulam Nabi Azad got the certificate from Lashkar-e-Taiba".

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju said that the Congress was speaking in the language of the separatists and terrorists. He further said that the party demanded the proof and now when the proof is available, the party was calling it a publicity stunt.&nbsp;

He said "Surprised that Congress that ruled India for more than five decades, is speaking in a language which is in tune with separatists and Pakistani establishment. Congress demanded proof of surgical strike, and now when proof has started emerging, they're saying it's for publicity".

Former Union Minister Arun Shourie again hit out at the BJP saying that the credibility of the government was so low that it had to provide a video proof for its claims.

He said, "Imagine a situation if strikes would have happened during Atalji's time and people would have asked him, he would've had a twinkle in his eye and said, "Really a strike has happened?". Today credibility of government is so low that they have to provide video proof when asked".

He further said that though he never had any doubt on the Indian army for conducting the surgical strike, the BJP's propoganda and boasting was wrong.&nbsp;

"I never had any doubt on the fact that the strike took place. But to use it for propaganda and to boast about it that 'my chest is 56 inch and I gave a befitting reply to Pakistan', is wrong", he said.&nbsp;

"Two reporters from North Indian channels misconstrued my words. I did not denigrate the services. When I said 'farzical' I meant that the over-hyping of a military strike makes it into a farcical incident."

Former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda said, "Don't try to belittle the Army & make certain remarks against it. You shouldn't try to cast any aspersions on Army in the name of surgical strike. These type of attacks can demoralise the Army. Let them go ahead without any political interference".

The film’s trailer featured a toilet leak scene from the jail which many thought was gross for the appetite of movie watchers. An activist identified as Prithvi Maske even wrote a letter to the CBFC asking to get the scene deleted before the film hits the theatres.&nbsp;

A source from the CBFC revealed, “The scene wasn’t adding value to the narrative besides displaying the helpless situation of the protagonist. It was a judgment call taken from an artistic point of view which the filmmakers agreed to.”

Maske is now a happy man as he said, "I was constantly taking legal advice on the matter. It is not favourable that something that shows the country and its administration in the wrong light, be passed. I was in touch with the CBFC and they assured me that my objection would be taken up with the makers of Sanju and addressed. The reason why the scene was cut is confidential information and will be given to me in a response, officially signed by CBFC chairperson Prasoon Joshi.”

As much was spoken about the overflowing prison toilet scene, director Rajkumar Hirani explained to a tabloid why the scene was put in the first place. He said, “The scene is from Sanju’s earlier stint in jail. It happened in 1993, during the monsoon. The Central Board of Film Certification cleared 'Sanju' barring one cut prior to the release of the film on June 29.

Just a day away from its release on June 29, Rajkumar Hirani’s Sanju has come under the hot wheel as the CBFC asked the makers to delete one controversial scene from the film. The film’s trailer featured a toilet leak scene from the jail which many thought was gross for the appetite of movie watchers. An activist identified as Prithvi Maske even wrote a letter to the CBFC asking to get the scene deleted before the film hits the theatres. A source from the CBFC revealed, “The scene wasn’t adding value to the narrative besides displaying the helpless situation of the protagonist. It was a judgment call taken from an artistic point of view which the filmmakers agreed to.” Maske is now a happy man as he said, "I was constantly taking legal advice on the matter. It is not favourable that something that shows the country and its administration in the wrong light, be passed. I was in touch with the CBFC and they assured me that my objection would be taken up with the makers of Sanju and addressed. The reason why the scene was cut is confidential information and will be given to me in a response, officially signed by CBFC chairperson Prasoon Joshi.” As much was spoken about the overflowing prison toilet scene, director Rajkumar Hirani explained to a tabloid why the scene was put in the first place. He said, “The scene is from Sanju’s earlier stint in jail. It happened in 1993, during the monsoon. Shweta and SlowCheeta (Cheeta as she refers to him in the interview) met because of theatre. It all started when they worked on the same theatrical play called The Interview directed by Akarsh Khurana -- who has written screenplays for Bollywood films like Krrish, Kites and the most recent being Irrfan Khan starrer Karwaan. Shweta narrates that it happened as they “stepped in for two actors who were not free.” Akarsh, meanwhile, told SlowCheeta about her and said “you guys should totally hook up” as “she’s damn cute and single”.

Shweta had no idea that their director played cupid in their relationship for a long time. Shweta said, “I owe a lot to him. The first invite for my wedding went out to Akarsh.”

A fan of his writing, she said, “One of my favourite things about him is that he is able to capture the emotions so well. His one-liners in conversations are so good that when we do an interview together I just let him talk as I just want to listen to him.”

"Report on the Situation of Human Rights in Kashmir: Developments in the Indian State of J-K from June 2016 to April 2018, and General Human Rights Concerns in Azad J-K and Gilgit-Baltistan" said despite the government of Pakistan's assertions of denial of any support to these groups, experts believe that "Pakistan's military continues to support their operations across the Line of Control in Indian-Administered Kashmir".

The report said, "the people on both sides of the Line of Control have been detrimentally impacted and suffer from limitations or denial of a range of human rights."

The report asked for urgent repealing of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act, 1990(AFSPA) and had criticised the Indian Army alleging it committed human rights violations in J&K.

The actor who has been accused in the abduction and molestation case of a Malayalam actress was suspended from the association last year when his name cropped up in the case. He was subsequently arrested and spent 85 days in Jail before he got a bail.&nbsp; 
 
The annual general body meeting of the association took the decision to take back Dileep following strong pressure from members.

An actresses` organisation expressed its displeasure over the reinstatement of the actor`s membership in the Association on Tuesday and the move has been slammed by political leaders as well.&nbsp; 
 
Senior Congress MLA, P.T. Thomas, who was one of the first to know about the actress kidnapping case in February 2017, and had reached the victim`s side before informing the police, told the media on Tuesday that AMMA should reconsider its decision on Dileep.

"It is now very clear that only a handful of the artistes were genuinely with the victim. Those leading lights who took part in the protest meetings held the next day of the kidnap attempt in Kochi, were only shedding crocodile tears.&nbsp;

"Not a single one of them was supporting the victim. It`s now time for the Kerala Assembly and the state government to react," said Thomas.

The Women in Cinema Collective (WCC), irked by AMMA`s decision to revoke the suspension of Dileep had put out a Facebook post on Monday.

"If you have decided to revoke the suspension... what has changed after he was suspended?" the WCC asked AMMA-led by Malayalam superstar Mohanlal.

"Do you know that you have decided to take back someone who is alleged to have been involved in a rape and the trial is yet to finish... don`t you feel anything at all?"

Popular actress Rima Kallingal and her husband director Ashiq Abu were the first to voice their displeasure.

Many were surprised by the manner in which around 385 artistes of AMMA who met in Kochi last Sunday, did not utter a word when actress Urmilla Unni asked if Dileep will be reinstated. None spoke up or against it as Dileep was taken back into the fold.

In fact, several reports stated AMMA members want showcause notices to be given to Dileep`s former wife Manju Warrier, Parvathy, Remya Nambisan and Rima Kallingal of the WCC, who are also part of AMMA. These actresses have openly criticised Dileep and had demanded his suspension from the association.&nbsp;

However, AMMA`s general secretary Edavela Babu has maintained a silence on the matter.

A Canadian woman was allegedly raped by a man whom she met at a pub in&nbsp;south Delhi's Hauz Khas area, the police said on Wednesday.

The accused, identified as Abhishek, has been arrested, they said.

Abhishek befriended the woman at a pub in Hauz Khas Village, where she had gone with her friends on Tuesday evening. 
 
According to the police, the woman went to Abhishek's place on his invitation where he assaulted her.

She informed the police after reaching AIIMS and later gave a written complaint, an official said. 
 
A case has been registered, he added.

A few days away from release, makers of Sanjay Dutt biopic Sanju face&nbsp;legal trouble as a complaint has been filed against Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma for allegedly making derogatory remarks against sex workers in a scene in the film.&nbsp;

In a dialogue that featured in the trailer of the film, Ranbir Kapoor portraying the role of Sanjay Dutt discusses his sex life with Anushka Sharma’s character and says, “308 without counting the prostitutes”.

The dialogue didn’t seem to go too well with the sex workers’ community who have approached National Commision for Women and raised their objection against mentioning them in a disrespectful manner. &nbsp;

Meanwhile, Rajkumar Hirani’s Sanju is said to have booked the widest release possible with 4000 plus screens across India. The film is written and directed by Rajkumar Hirani and also stars Paresh Rawal, Manisha Koirala, Vicky Kaushal, Sonam Kapoor and Dia Mirza amongst others.

As the first batch of Amarnath pilgrims arrived in Udhampur on Wednesday morning, heavy security had been deployed in the as part of the "biggest-ever" security blanket thrown to secure them.&nbsp;

Forces have deployed a huge assortment of CCTV cameras and about 500 drones, assisted by mounted Army columns, to ensure that the yatra route is not breached by terrorists and in case of a possible attack, reinforcements reach as fast as possible.

Vehicles tagged with electromagnetic chips, bike and bullet-proof SUV police convoys and scores of bullet-proof bunkers have been added.&nbsp;

A posse of over 40,000 armed CRPF and state police personnel have virtually dotted the yatra routes from Jammu via Pahalgam and Baltal-- with their overwhelming presence in armoured vehicles.

Over two lakh pilgrims have registered for the annual pilgrimage to the 3,880 metre high cave shrine of Amarnath in south Kashmir Himalayas till now.

"All security arrangements have been made. We have cross-checked every contingency. We're using latest technology and vehicles, and manpower has been increased as compared to last year," A V Chauhan, Inspector General CRPF Jammu Sector, told ANI.

The security personnel have made new additional arrangements, such as RIFD (radio frequency identification) to track the vehicles and prevent them from getting lost. Bike ambulances have also been introduced for speedy first aid or medical assistance.

"There's no specific threat as such, only general safety concerns. But, we're ready for any kind of attack. On the highway, we have rendered safety from the Improvised explosive device (IED), ambush and any possible terror attack. We are regulating a lot of technology backed items in providing safety to the pilgrims," added Chauhan.

The official said "all" security forces camps in the state have been asked to stay on alert as militants may try to target them after witnessing heavy deployment of uniformed personnel along the yatra route.

On July 10 last year, at least nine Amarnath pilgrims were killed and 19 others were injured in an attack on a bus in Anantnag district.&nbsp;

India's answer is expected to be no, which means the US will invoke CAATSA or Countering America's Adversaries through Sanctions Act against it. &nbsp;

India could face the full weight of American sanctions unless Defence Secretary Jim Mattis and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo are able to convince the US Congress that India deserves a waiver. They may in turn demand a commitment from India that it pare the Russian weapons and weapons platforms used by its military.

India has been diversifying its weapons sources away from Russia, but no foreign country can tell India what to buy and from where. &nbsp;

US expected to demand India buy their THAAD missile, not Russian S-400

News reports said Wednesday that the Jammu and Kashmir Police have identified Shujaat Bukhari's killers.&nbsp;

The reports quoted police sources as saying two of the killers were from South Kashmir and that the third was a Pakistani national.&nbsp;

The sources said the Pakistani national was Naveed Jutt, who had escaped from Srinagar's SMHS hospital in February this year. Jutt, who had been in police custody, had escaped during a terror attack mounted on the hospital to help him make his getaway.&nbsp;

One of the largest economy in Africa and the oil-rich country Nigeria has overtaken India to emerge as the country with the largest number of people living in extreme poverty.&nbsp;

The report reveals an estimated 87 million Nigerians or around half of the country's population to be living on less than $1.90 a day. While India has 73 million people living under poverty line.&nbsp;

Delhi Police said Wednesday that Major Nikhil Handa — who is accused of murdering a fellow officer's wife — has been giving them "misleading information day after day".&nbsp;

But they added that they have "done 90% of the work" and were close to cracking the case.&nbsp;

"Accused Nikhil Handa is giving us misleading information day after day. We have done 90% of the work and in coming days the truth will come out," DCP, West Delhi Vijay Kumar said.&nbsp;

Handa was on Monday remanded in police custody for four days.&nbsp;

Police said Wednesday that they had not yet found the weapon used to kill Shailaja.&nbsp;

Shailaja had been found dead with her throat slit in Delhi's cantonment area on June 23. Police said her killer had repeatedly run over with a car to try and mask the crime.&nbsp;

News reports later said Handa had been obsessed with Shailaja — that he had made 3,000 calls to her in one year — and had been trying to convince her to leave her husband and marry him.

Handa is married himself.&nbsp;

In a vibrant democracy like India, the role of media is unquestionably very prominent. Media, in a democracy like India, can freely express its views and can bring facts at the fore. For ruling class, media still is a strong watchdog it can make or break things.&nbsp;

Remember Watergate scandal during the early seventies in the USA? The US media (The Washington Post, Time, and The New York Times) played a major role in triggering public repercussion. Ultimately, President Nixon had to resign.&nbsp;

During British rule in India, Indian nationalist used print media as a very potent and effective tool to build pressure on Britishers. Renowned freedom fighter Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi became an unequivocal mouthpiece of all observed classes under British rule in the then Northern Provinces through his newspaper 'Pratap'. During his initial days in India during 1919-1931, Mahatma Gandhi used his weekly newspaper 'Young India’ to spread his views on national movements as nonviolence at its core&nbsp;

At times media leaves an impact, which is everlasting. As an ultimate mark of expressing resentment and atrocities post declaration of Emergency on June 25, 1975, Indian Express came out with a blank editorial on 28 June 1975 an act which has almost become immortal.&nbsp;

Coming to contemporary times, having seen Indian politics for close to three and half decades, it is quite apparent to me that media is a severe and no-holds-barred critic of the ruling class. The reasons have been simple and straight.&nbsp;

First, unethical ruling and political class always gives ammunition to media to build a tale around it and secondly people (readers) are more receptive towards anti-establishment stories, as being anti-establishment is a sign of audacity and trait of being rebellious is admired by a common man.&nbsp;

But the most amazing and unique thing is that despite being in power for more than four years now, Modi still enjoys an unparalleled support from media. It is even far better than the media’s patronage, enjoyed by the Vajpayee government during 1999-2004.&nbsp;

As history suggests us that media has the power to build the decisive narrative. It was Indian Express group of legendary Ramnath Goenka, which played a key role in flooring Rajiv Gandhi and Congress in 1989, in spite of the fact that  Rajiv came in power with the historic mandate in 1984. If political forces were coalescing behind VP Singh, it was Goenka who cornered Rajiv and Congress through his publications Indian Express and his Hindi daily Jansatta. Goenka led newspapers convinced people aboubt scandals like Bofors and Fairfax.    &nbsp;

Years later, during the UPA-2 regime during 2009-2014, electronic media exposed the flurry of scams, which initiated serious repercussions from the people. Congress was left clueless and beleaguered. This, when coupled with Modi waves, resulted in the most humiliating defeat for Congress in 2014. &nbsp;

But Modi has been exceptional. Though it has been a mixed bag, overall Modi’s media approval rating must be highest among all previous governments (after completing four years at the helm). The reasons are palpable. Modi stands firmly in the reign and so far he has not given a single loose ball to build a story around it.&nbsp;

The weak and fragmented Opposition is also one reason that Modi enjoys such high approval rating for media. In the race of virtuousness, Modi almost always marches ahead of leaders sitting in Opposition and trying to pull him down.&nbsp;

BJP’s media cell is doing an excellent job and there is a legion of erudite and forceful orators, who defend Modi and BJP with perfection at media forums. They normally outclass their counterparts in opposition parties.&nbsp;

Opposition parties have been picking some issue or other (like demonetisation, GST, Jay Shah, Una, JNU, Rohit Vemulla etc.) over the past four years in a hope that they can build a nationwide resentment against Modi but they have been failing consistently and the stand of media has played a key role behind this.&nbsp;

This media rating of Modi would play a decisive role in 2019. Opposition parties are exploring their chance to usurp power in 2019 like united opposition did in 1977 and 1989 but in the process, they are ignoring media’s position. In 1977 and 1989, media was on the platform with them but surely it won’t be the case in 2019.&nbsp;

Media in any civilised society is the reflection of mood of the nation and people, and this very fact sums up that how Modi is well pitched against all odds and against all Opposition parties.&nbsp;

India has flatly rejected a survey that named India as the most dangerous country in the world for women. The survey in question was carried out by the Thomson Reuters Foundation. External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Tuesday launched a new scheme under which a person can apply for a passport from anywhere in India irrespective of the place of stay.

The minister also launched a mobile application, available in Android and iOS platforms, that would have the facilities for applying, paying and scheduling appointments for acquiring a passport.

Under the new scheme, launched on the occasion of the Sixth Passport Seva Divas, a person can now choose the Regional Passport Office (RPO) and the Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) or Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK) for submitting the application.

The application can be submitted irrespective of whether the person's present residential address was within the jurisdiction of the selected RPO or not, a Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) statement said.

The police verification, if required for a specific passport, would be conducted at the address specified in the application form, it said.

The passport will be printed and despatched by the RPO selected for application submission by the applicant to the address specified in the application, the statement said.

For example, a resident of Jaipur, who is temporarily residing in Kolkata, will now be able to apply at a PSK or POPSK under the RPO, Kolkata, and will not have to travel all the way back to Jaipur to submit an application for a passport at a PSK or POPSK under the Jaipur RPO.

This citizen-centric initiative of the ministry is expected to benefit the applicants who are unable to apply at a PSK or POPSK near their ordinary place of residence, the statement said.

With the launch of the 'mPassport Seva App', a person would not require access to a computer and printer to apply for a passport, the MEA said.

Swaraj, while speaking at the launch of the initiatives, said there had been "revolutionary" changes in the process for applying for a passport.

There were 77 Passport Seva Kendras made available in 48 years, while 231 more were added in the last 48 months, she said at the event attended by Minister of State for Communications Manoj Sinha and Minister of State for External Affairs General (Retd) V K Singh.

Noting that at present there were 307 PSKs in the country, she announced that at least one PSK or POPSK would be made available in all the 543 Lok Sabha constituencies.&nbsp

Swaraj said unnecessary requirements for a passport have been scrapped since she took charge of the ministry, including doing away with marriage certificate.&nbsp

Now apply for passport from anywhere in India: MEA

Nearly sixty foreign terrorists are among 243 militants operating in Kashmir valley where "Operation All Out" is in full swing to wipe them out to tackle terrorism in the valley.

In less than six months, 75 young men including some highly educated have joined militancy in Kashmir valley, thereby raising concerns due to an unusual surge in such persons taking up guns.

Police and security forces are to intensify their "outreach programme" to persuade local militants through their families to lay down weapons and join the mainstream.

"As many as 243 terrorists are operating in Kashmir valley and of these, 59 militants are foreigners", a senior Police officer said quoting official statistics.

Besides, 15 terrorists are operating in Jammu region, it said, adding a total of 188 locals and 70 foreign terrorists are operating in the entire Jammu and Kashmir.&nbsp

Operations against militants in J&K would be intensified in the days to come as extremist activities increased during Ramzan when counter-militancy operations were stopped, state police chief S P Vaid said last Tuesday.&nbsp

"Operations will continue. Only thing was in between, during this (ceasefire) period, the operations were stopped. They were going on earlier also, but we will intensify these operations in the days to come. And it would be, I think, much easier to work," he said &nbspin Jammu when asked if Governor's rule would make any difference to the security apparatus of the state in counter-militancy operations."

Vaid said the militant activities increased during the period of Ramzan ceasefire.

"As many as 75 Kashmiri youths joined militancy in the valley in over 5 month period this year," the senior security officer said.

The officer said a high number of 127 young men joined militancy in 2017, a record since 2010.

The officer claimed 88 Kashmiri youths joined militancy in 2016.&nbsp

Since 2014, there has been a constant rise in the number of people joining militancy. As many as 66 youths joined militancy in Kashmir in 2015 and 53 in 2014, according to data compiled by security agencies.

In 2010, 54 youths joined militancy and in 2011, the number came down to 23. It further dipped to 21 in 2012 and 16 in 2013, it said.

There is a trend of highly educated men joining militancy in Kashmir now.&nbsp

In January this year, Mannan Bashir Wani, who was pursuing Ph.D. In earth, science-Geology from Aligarh Muslim University marked his presence in the roll calls for the last time before heading home to Tekipora village in Lolab of Kupwara district in north Kashmir.

Three days after his departure on January 2, a young man with fair complexion and with a black beard holding AK-47 in his hands went viral on social networking websites in Kashmir.&nbsp

The young man was 25-year-old Manan who had joined the ranks of Hizb-ul-Mujahideen.

The youth joining militancy has gone up after the killing of 21-year-old Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani in an encounter with security forces on July 8, 2016.

Muhammad Rafi Bhat, a young assistant professor of Kashmir University, killed during encounter within two days of having joined militant ranks, has yet again brought focus on the new-age militancy in the restive region.&nbsp

Rafi was among five militants, including wanted Hizbul Mujahideen commander Saddam Padder, killed by government forces in Shopian district on May 6.&nbsp

Five civilians were also killed in clashes in the area.

Others include the 26-year-old Junaid Ashraf Sehrai, an MBA degree holder from Kashmir university, and son of Mohammed Ashraf Sehrai, who took over as chairman of Tehrek-e-Hurriyat from Syed Ali Shah Geelani. Teherik-e-Hurriyat is a pro-Pakistan amalgam of separatists groups.

In November 2017, Majid Khan, a footballer who had passed his 12th with distinction took up arms only to return back home after an appeal by his parents.

Others include Omar Ahsan, 22, who was a post-graduate student in Physics and Lashkar-e-Toiba militants Muzamil Amin and Hilal Ahmad Rather, both of whom were qualified in Islamic teachings.

In February 2015, Ashiq Hussain Dar, who was killed in an encounter in Heff Shermal, had MA (English) and BEd degrees to his credit besides a government job.

According to officials, every funeral of a local militant spawns at least two additions to the ranks of militant groups.

As per a report of Criminal Investigation department (CID), an Intelligence wing of J&K Police, 32 per cent of youths who joined militancy had passed Class X and 19 per cent were undergraduates or graduates.

While post-graduates constitute 7 per cent, the remaining 7 per cent who joined militancy were without any education.

Over 65 per cent showed religious inclination before joining militancy while 10 per cent were academically inclined.&nbsp

While 3 per cent were drug addicts and the rest 22 per cent were vagabonds, the report submitted by CID to MHA, said.

Asserting social media had an impact on them, the CID report said 25 per cent of youths had access to social media in 2010 and 2011 respectively which? rose to 30 per cent by 2014 and and 70 per cent in 2015.

The report says that opting for guns "is a youth phenomena" and youngsters "join militancy because of thrill seeker attitude".
