He is already in custody of Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with the Moser Baer bank fraud case.

"A city to some, home to many" - this posting on Twitter by a user of the microblogging site aptly sums up the emotions of many who love Madras, now known as Chennai, as the city turned 380 years on Thursday.

Chennaites, and those who moved to other places from the places, took to Twitter to wish the capital city of Tamil Nadu a Happy Birthday! and share memories and emotions connected with it.

Founded on August 22, 1639 the city Chennapattinam was later renamed as Madraspatanam and soon people began calling it as Madras.

British East India Company purchased Madrasapattinam village in 1639 which marked the founding of the Madras.

In 1996, the Tamil Nadu government officially changed its name to Chennai.

However, for those born before the 90s, Chennai has always remained Madras similar to how Kolkata continues to be known by its erstwhile 'Calcutta'.

The city is home to many film stars including Rajnikanth whose movies are loved by people spanning geographical and linguistic boundaries.

Chennai is famed for its architectural marvels and hundred years old temples like Kapaleeswarar Temple and Ekambareswarar Temple.

It is also home to the Fort St George, the first British fortress in India.

Chennai's Marina beach is the longest beach in the country. Being a hub of one-third of India's automobile industry, the city also got a nickname "The Detroit of India".

Chennai-based writer Sreedhar Pillai wrote, "#Madras aka #Chennai is the only place I can ever call home forever. Happy #MadrasDay #Madras380"

"Today is Madras Day. Our city is at least 380 years old. Let us celebrate our Madras that is Chennai," Twitter user Sumanth Raman said.

A user Vignesh Vicky shared how the city gave him strength and patience to face future pathways. Former Haryana chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda on Thursday appeared before a CBI special court in Panchkula in connection with the AJL land allotment and Manesar land scam cases.

According to the Enforcement Directorate (ED), Hooda allegedly misused his official position and allotted a plot in the guise of re-allotment at an under-valued price to the Associated Journals Limited (AJL), a group that runs the National Herald newspaper.

The agency claimed that the value of the plot was Rs 64.93 crore but Hooda gave it away for Rs 59 lakh.

In May this year, the ED had attached the plot under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

In December 2018, the agency had filed a charge sheet against Hooda and Congress leader Motilal Vora for alleged fraudulent allotment of the land to AJL in Panchkula in 2005.

The ED had on July 26, this year questioned Hooda for over four hours in Delhi in connection with the AJL land allotment case.

In the Manesar land scam case, the ED had attached 18.5 acres of land in Gurugram and Rs 66.57 crore lying in bank accounts of a private company and some others under the PMLA.

The Manesar land allotment case pertains to the alleged purchase of land from farmers in Gurgaon for Rs 100 crore when the actual worth (as per market rate) was Rs 1,500 crore.

The land was bought in the period from August 2004 to August 2007. The Congress government in Haryana, led by Hooda, remained in power from March 2005 to October 2014.

The purchase, according to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), was made under "threat and false apprehension of acquisition of the land" allegedly by the Hooda government.

BJP Baghpat MP Satya Pal Singh on Thursday accused senior Congress leader P Chidambaram of not respecting law of the land and thwarting arrests while stating that 'his dignity would have remained intact, had he surrendered earlier'.

"Chidambaram ji is a former Union Finance and Home Minister. He is an intellectual and very well knows the law. He should not have behaved like this after the court's order. What happened was not good, had he surrendered earlier, his dignity would have remained intact," Singh said speaking to ANI.

Reacting to the accusations by Congress leaders of BJP orchestrating Chidambaram's arrest, he said: "The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and Enforcement Directorate (ED) are independent investigative agencies. The case is registered with ED and CBI and accordingly, they are working. No one can run away from the law. He should have faith in court."

Upon reaching the former Union Minister's residence on Tuesday, CBI officials were unable to find P Chidambaram and as a result, they pasted a notice at his premises asking him to present himself within two hours.

Chidambaram, one of the key ministers during ten years of UPA regime, was taken to headquarters of the probe agency after CBI officials scaled the boundary walls of his residence in Jor Bagh on Wednesday night to arrest him in connection with the INX Media case.

He was arrested after he failed to get relief from the Supreme Court over CBI and ED's pursuit of him. He is likely to be produced before a CBI court at Rouse Avenue today.

Several other party leaders including Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Randeep Singh Surjewala, have also backed the Rajya Sabha MP against his arrest by the investigation agencies. However, the BJP leader also urged the people to leave the matter up to the court of law.
