On Monday too, Ahluwalia was summoned by Pakistan for the fifth time in eight days to protest against the alleged ceasefire violation.

The Indian Defence Ministry in its annual report 2018-19 had said there were 228 CFVs (ceasefire violations) along the LC in 2016, 860 CFVs in 2017 and 1629 CFVs in 2018.

"Appropriate and effective retaliation, wherever required, was carried out to the CFVs initiated by Pakistan," the report said.

New Delhi has repeatedly urged Pakistan to "respect" the 2003 ceasefire arrangement between the two countries.

The developments also come in the absence of Indian High Commissioner to Pakistan, Ajay Bisaria, who returned to New Delhi earlier this week after Islamabad urged India to recall its envoy amid heightened tensions between the two neighbours following the abrogation of Article 370 that accorded special status to Jammu and Kashmir.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Tuesday and raised the issue of violent protests that took place outside the Indian mission by Pakistani and Khalistani groups on Independence day with the British Prime Minister.

An Indian government readout said that Prime Minister Modi "drew attention to the challenges posed by vested interests pursuing their motivated agenda, including by violent means."

"In this context he referred to the violence and vandalism perpetrated by a large mob against the High Commission of India in London on the last Independence Day of India," the statement added.

The British Prime minister regretted the incident and assured the safety of the Indian mission.

The readout said Prime Minister Johnson "assured that all necessary steps would be taken to ensure safety and security of the High Commission, its personnel and visitors."

Thousands of protestors from Pakistani and Khalistani groups in London had clashed violently outside the Indian High Commission on India's Independence Day even as the authorities tried to control the mob. At least four people were arrested by the London authorities and one person was injured in the incident.

Though the Indian mission was informed that protest will take place and had asked to take all precautionary measures, the scale at which it took place and dramatic visuals that were seen left many members of Indian diaspora shocked.

India has already taken up with the United Kingdom the violent protests which took place outside the Indian High Commission on Independence Day and conveyed its concerns on how the security of the mission was undermined.

British PM Johonson and PM Modi are expected to interact in Biarritz during the 45th G7 summit that will take place over the weekend.

During the phone call, PM Modi congratulated Boris Johnson on his election as the British PM and "expressed his readiness to work with him for strengthening the strategic partnership between India and the United Kingdom."

Terror was also raised by Prime Minister Modi who pointed out that "terrorism had plagued all parts of the world, including India and Europe" and stressed the "importance of effective steps to ward off the threats posed by radicalisation, violence and intolerance, particularly in the context of the expanding footprint of terrorist organisations such as ISIS."

Continuing its cautious approach, the Jammu and Kashmir government has decided to open middle schools in the Kashmir valley from Wednesday after primary schools were made functional on Monday.

The decision came a day after primary schools were opened across all districts of Kashmir, which saw a tepid response on the first day (Monday) but witnessed "considerable improvement today", according to Rohit Kansal, principal secretary, Jammu and Kashmir.

"Yesterday was the first day when we have taken a decision to open primary schools all across the districts of Kashmir. Staff members, as well as students, attended although attendance was not high yesterday," he told the media.

"But keeping in view the considerable improvement in attendance of students today and encouraging feedback from parents and the number of requests we have received from parents we have decided that middle school in Kashmir valley will also start functioning from tomorrow in the areas where primary schools are already open," said Kansal.

He said that reports of normal functioning are coming from larger parts of the state with 22 districts reportedly functioning normally.

"136 out of 197 Police Stations have no day time restrictions of any type while in the Kashmir valley alone 50 out of 111 Police stations have no day time restrictions. Government offices are open and are reporting more than normal attendance," Kansal said.

He also said that 73,000 landlines out of total 96 thousand in Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh are functional.

"73,000 landlines out of total ninety-six thousand in Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh are now functional. Further, there are reports that in the last 12 days Rs 800 crore is withdrawn in Kashmir valley from a total of 734 ATMs located here," said the official.

"In the areas having relaxation public transport has started functioning and from today we have reports of inter-district transport also. National Highways and Airport are reported to be functioning normally. An adequate supply of all essential item including medicines have been ensured," he said.

Prohibitory orders were issued after the abrogation of Article 370 and bifurcation of the state into two Union Territories - Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh on August 5.
