Geopolitical situation contributed to the decision to scrap Article 370, but its abrogation has always been part of BJP’s agenda, said Minister of State in PMO Jitendra Singh.

Geopolitical situation contributed to the decision to scrap Article 370, but its abrogation has always been part of BJP’s agenda, said Minister of State in PMO Jitendra Singh. In a free-wheeling interview with WION's Kartikeya Sharma, Singh commended Prime Minister Narendra Modi for calling Pakistan’s nuclear bluff. Pakistan has been exposed in the process as world view has come around India’s point of view on Kashmir. “The coming around of the international community is a result of massive foreign outreach by Prime Minister Narendra Modi leading to international isolation of Pakistan,” he said. “PM has created a different narrative that we can hit at the fountainhead of terror. It sends a strong message to Pakistan that any misadventure against India would be at its peril,” the minister said. Speaking about the current situation, he said things in the valley will soon become normal and terrorism would be finished in a year. “The way people did not imagine that terrorism in Punjab would come to an end, the same is happening in Kashmir. Militancy was a product of isolation and now Article 370 has been abrogated, things will become normal in the valley,” said Singh. He said that Article 370 could not be repealed earlier as BJP never had the numbers. He said that old separatist politics has come to an end in the state and new crop of leadership would emerge soon. The minister said that panchayat election will throw up new faces in the valley and we would ensure that they become part of the political process in the state. When asked as to why state leaders have been detained, Jitendra Singh said, "It is not the first time that detentions have happened in Kashmir. Earlier governments also detained people. Things will improve gradually." Singh said that regional imbalance would also be addressed. "Both Ladakh and Jammu had developed a sense of victimhood. We will correct it in terms of both developmental funds and representation. Though elections are still long away in Jammu and Kashmir, the process of delimitation can commence by end of the year,'' he said. Singh said BJP was not afraid that all Kashmiri political parties would gang up against them in the state. “Two former Chief Ministers could stay together in a guest house. How do you expect them to come together on any issue,” he said.

Andhra Pradesh Tourism Minister M Srinivasa Rao said that as many as 10 MLAs from the TDP are ready to join the ruling YSRCP if Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy accepts them.

"Four Rajya Sabha MP`s joined the BJP from TDP. If Jagan accepts, 10 TDP MLAs are ready to join YSRCP," Srinivasa Rao said in Visakhapatnam.

He further lashed out at former chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu for his allegation that the floods were "artificial" (man-made) and that the state government was conspiring to drown his house located on the banks of the Krishna River.

"Chandrababu has invented a new word - artificial floods. If Chandrababu can create artificial floods, we are requesting you to send floods to Visakhapatnam and Vizianagaram, where there are no rains," he said.

Following incessant rains in several parts of Andhra Pradesh, Deputy Tehsildar of Tadepalli village had earlier served a notice to Naidu to vacate his house.

On Andhra Pradesh minister Botsa Satyanarayana`s recent comments on Amaravati, Srinivasa Rao said, "Botsa didn`t say to change the capital city of Amaravati. He said expenditures are increasing in Amaravati when it is compared with other places. Capital city Amaravati is in the flood-prone area. That is why it is taking much more money to construct buildings there. People money is being wasted."

BJP Rajya Sabha MP Srujuna Chaudhary had earlier alleged that Jagan Mohan Reddy was taking revenge from his predecessor Chandrababu Naidu.

"He (Jagan) is using his power to take revenge from Opposition party leader Chandrababu Naidu. He should abandon his personal enmity (with TDP chief) and focus on governing the state," Chaudhary said.

On this, Srinivasa Rao said, "Srujuna is always giving support to Chandrababu against YSRCP government. The government just came two months ago. It will take time to resolve all the problems. That is why Jagan stopped tenders of Polavaram and Amaravati. The government will filter corrupt persons."

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi began his visit to France on Thursday during which he will meet the top French leadership and participate in 45th G7 summit in Biarritz. Ahead of his France visit PM said, "India and France have excellent bilateral ties, which are reinforced by a shared vision to cooperate for further enhancing peace and prosperity for our two countries and the world at large." "Our strong strategic and economic partnership is complemented by a shared perspective on major global concerns such as terrorism, climate change, etc. I am confident that this visit will further promote our long-standing and valued friendship with France for mutual prosperity, peace and progress," he added. Modi will arrive at Paris's Charles de Gaulle Airport at 9pm IST and hold talks with French President Emmanuel Macron around 10pm IST. This will be followed by press statements at 11.15pm IST. On Wednesday, speaking at his farewell, outgoing French Envoy to India Alexandre Ziegler said, "we have crossed a milestone over the past years. A milestone at the strategic level – that’s obvious. A milestone in the very strong personal rapport that has developed between our two leaders, Emmanuel Macron and Narendra Modi." This will be Modi's fifth meeting with the French President. Modi visited France in 2017 followed by the visit of the French President in 2018 and then meetings on the sidelines of G20 summit in Argentina and Japan in December 2018 and June 2019, respectively. Air India Crash Victims On Friday morning Modi will meet Prime Minister of Franch Édouard Philippe and address the Indian diaspora at the UNESCO Headquarters. He will also inaugurate memorials for Indian victims of the air India crash in Nid D'Aigle. The memorial commemorates two tragic air crashes of Air India flights 245 and 101 in 1950 and 1966 respectively. Air India flight 245 crashed into Mont Blanc on 3 November 1950 killing 48 people and 16 years later, almost exactly on the same spot Air India Flight 101 crashed killing 117 passengers. Among the 117 killed onboard AI Flight 101 was chairman of the Indian Atomic Energy Commission and the man who was referred as the "father of the Indian nuclear programme" Dr. Homi Jehangir Bhabha. G7: Modi to meet Trump, Boris It's after a gap of more than 10 years that India has been invited at the G7 summit, the last time being 2005 when the then British Prime Minister Tony Blair had invited the then Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at the Gleneagles summit. India is "Biarritz partner" country along with Australia, Chile, South Africa, Rwanda, Senegal, Egypt and Burkina Faso. Climate and biodiversity will be the main focus of the 45th G7 summit whose theme is "combating inequality". Modi is also expected to interact with US President Donald Trump and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson at G7. "I am going to be with PM Modi... I will be with him over a weekend in France", US President Donald Trump had said. During the conversation between PM Modi and British PM Boris Johnson, G7 was discussed.

US President Donald Trump said Wednesday that other countries must assume the battle against Islamic extremists as the US negotiates a withdrawal from Afghanistan.

He also warned Europeans to take back nationals captured fighting for the Islamic State, or he will release them back to their countries.

Asked by journalists if he is concerned about the reemergence of the Islamic State group in Iraq, Trump said forces under his lead had wiped out the extremists' caliphate.

INX Media Case: Karti Chidambaram defends his father

What if we were to watch a movie that was inspired by true events while being seated along with the person or the team whose achievement the film is based on?

It was the same exhilarating feeling that swept nearly 100 students and faculty of Chennai’s MCN government-aided school while watching the film ‘Mission Mangal’ along with Padma Shri Dr Mylswamy Annadurai, the Programme Director of Mangalyaan or India’s Mars Orbiter Mission. Read the film's review here.

Aimed at arousing the children’s curiosity and interest in Space science and its applications, the screening was organized by SpaceKidz India at a private theatre in the city. The Spacekidz team has launched 9 balloon satellites, 2 sub-orbital satellites, and 1 orbital satellite.

The students who had gathered at the theatre erupted in cheer and jubilation on seeing Dr Mylswamy Annadurai who was accompanied by his wife.

When he quizzed them about the movie that they were to watch, the students enthusiastically replied ‘Mangalyaan’ and ‘Mars Mission’ and ‘Red Planet’. “I had heard of this movie on our Mars Mission that had received a good response, but like you, I am also watching it for the first time. You children need to understand the opportunities available in India in the field of Space technology and its allied streams”, he told the students.

Speaking to WION after the screening, Dr Annadurai said, “the theme of the film looks reasonably good and certain portions were depicted creatively, while some parts are very dramatized as is the case with commercial cinema. The larger than life effect of the cinema had a great impact on the kids and they were cheering and clapping.”

He appreciated the film for having juxtaposed and the failure of the Russian and Chinese missions, with the Indian mission that succeeded in its maiden attempt.

“Many actions and dialogues delivered by the protagonists were uttered by me during the mission - like the cake cutting scenes, shouting at the team and later appreciating them. However, the pub sequence, smoking and the role of a NASA scientist in the ISRO mission are far from reality”, he said.

When asked if the film got him emotional, he reminisced, “nobody believed that PSLV could be used for a Mars mission as the rocket could only lift 1.35 tons, and the satellite alone would need to carry 850 kilograms of fuel and the equipment needed to weigh within 500 kilograms in order to be launched. We also had to get the job done within the available budget and in the stipulated timeframe. When everybody thought it was impossible, we made the team believe that it was possible to succeed.”

Speaking to WION on the sacrifices made by the family, Vasanthi Annadurai, the scientist’s wife recalled that this was their first movie in over two years. “During the missions, he used to spend entire months in the Satish Dhawan Space Center at Sriharikota and that is the nature of the ISRO scientist’s work. Once when he had a fracture in his leg in the middle of a crucial mission, he went to work the next day on a wheelchair,” she told WION.

Dr Srimathy Kesan, CEO of Spacekidz said, “People should understand that scientists are also human beings with an emotional side and like us all, they have a kid within them. While watching the scene where some of his own words and phrases were uttered, Dr Annadurai cheerfully said, yes this is how I said it. I wanted every child to see that and watch it with a man behind this mission. That’s a seed sown in their mind”.

As they emerged out of the screening, the kids were visibly elated and inspired. Sarath, a student of class six said that he aspires to be a Space scientist and contribute to India’s progress. Lakshmi, a student of class nine said that she was delighted to see women in the field of space science and serving the country in significant ways.

Mangalyaan Programme Director watches 'Mission Mangal' with school students

The attempt by former finance minister P Chidambaram to claim the high moral ground failed on Wednesday evening.

The Congress party realising that Chidambaram may be arrested had organised a hurried press meet which was attended by party top guns - Ahmed Patel, Gulam Nabi Azad, KC Venugopal, Kapil Sibal and Vivek Tankha.

Junior leader Jitendra Singh was also present with the entire media contingent in attendance.

Congress wanted to put a spin on the news cycle built through the day that the former finance minister was absconding. In fact, earlier in the day, Chidambaram's team was desperate to get relief from the Supreme Court but failed to make any headway at the top court.

The party decided to take the high moral ground and decided in its official release not to announce that Chidambaram himself would be attending the press conference at 8.15 pm - bang on prime time even as television channels were busy carrying out uninterrupted coverage on his whereabouts.

Chidambaram took reporters by surprise when he showed up at the press conference. Karthi Chidambaram, on the other hand, addressed a press conference from Chennai. The biggest shift in the Congress was Priyanka Gandhi Vadra's support to the fallen Congress star.

Rahul Gandhi was opposed to the former finance minister. He had even ensured that he did not get the Rajya Sabha ticket immediately after 2014.

In fact, Rahul had given the Rajya Sabha ticket from Karnataka to Rajeev Gowda. It was because of intense pressure from inside Congress that the former president had to accommodate P Chidambaram. On Wednesday, it was Priyanka Gandhi who openly supported the Congress leader.

As it stood, Congress aligned with Chidambaram and so did Rahul Gandhi. Chidambaram is now at the CBI headquarters. Congress today is fighting public perception, however, as of now, the party has lost the war.

India's grand old party could have made Chidambaram a martyr but the ex-finance minister was too afraid to be arrested.

Now, Chidambaram's arrest is a reality. Many people forget that Hindu terrorism is something which the RSS loathes and Chidambaram is the poster boy of that attack.

Chidambaram's attack is less about corruption and more about a man who tried to corner the RSS on its fundamental philosophy.

P Chidambaram's arrest: Congress fails to win the perception war

Jet fuel supply to state-run carrier Air India has been stopped at six domestic airports because of unpaid dues to fuel provider, Indian Oil Corp (IOCL), three sources said on Thursday.

"Jet fuel supply to Air India has been stopped for commercial reasons at six airports," a source at Indian Oil Corp told Reuters.

India, for years, has propped up the debt-laden airline by infusing equity to keep it alive - the government injected 39.75 billion rupees ($553 million) into Air India in the fiscal year that ended on March 31.

"In the absence of equity support Air India cannot handle the huge debt service liabilities," the airline said in a statement, adding its financial performance was improving.

Fuel supply to Air India has been halted since Thursday evening at six cities across the country including Mohali in the north, Vishakapatnam and Kochi in the south, Pune in the west and Ranchi and Patna in the east, one of the sources said.

Country's aviation sector is facing turmoil with one of its biggest private carriers, Jet Airways in bankruptcy, while passenger growth in the market overall has slowed.

The government failed last year in its attempt to sell a 76 per cent stake in Air India due to a lack of interest from bidders who said they found some of the stake sale terms too onerous, making it a non-starter.

It is now redrawing the stake sale plans and as part of the effort it has hived off some of the loss-making airline's debt of $8.5 billion.

India may now consider selling up to a 100 per cent stake in the airline, a government official told Reuters in July, adding that it expects to get 150 billion rupees ($2.1 billion) from selling the airline.

Karti Chidambaram, son of former Finance Minister P Chidambaram, said on Thursday that senior counsels Kapil Sibal and Abhishek Manu Singhvi have effectively answered "everything" the probe agency is seeking in the INX media case.

"You heard the arguments of Kapil Sibal and Abhishek Manu Singhvi that effectively answers everything that the CBI is seeking," said Karti Chidambaram after the court proceedings in which the CBI judge gave CBI custody of his father till Aug 26 for interrogation.

Karti, who the main accused in the INX media case, added, "There are no chances of my bail being cancelled as my bail is confirmed by the Supreme Court."

Earlier in the day, he took to Twitter saying, "It's a privilege to hear @KapilSibal and @DrAMSinghvi in court. Master class. They should video record all court proceedings. Will be most useful to all students of law, particularly those interested in court craft." the former union minister was arrested by the CBI from his residence in New Delhi late on Wednesday.

The court said family members and lawyers are permitted to meet Chidambaram for 30 minutes a day.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, who argued for the CBI, had moved an application seeking 5-day custody of Chidambaram.

Mehta argued that custodial interrogation of the Congress leader was required as the former Finance Minister was "evasive" and "non-cooperative" in the investigation.

Special Judge Ajay Kumar Kuhar heard the arguments of the CBI and Chidambaram's counsels.

Mehta said that the case, which is a classic example of money laundering, is in the pre-charge sheet stage.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump will be face-to-face on the sidelines of the 45th G7 summit in Biarritz, France on August 26.

This is the first time both leaders will be together at a forum after there much talked about bilateral on the sidelines of G20 summit at the end of June in Osaka Japan.

"I am gonna be with PM Modi...I will be with him over a weekend in France", US President Donald Trump had said earlier this week.

The meet comes in the backdrop of India-Pakistan tensions over India's internal decision to remove the special status for the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir which saw Islamabad lashing out at New Delhi.

Since that decision, Pakistani Prime Minister and President Trump have spoken twice and the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President have spoken once and discussed the ongoing situation in the Indian subcontinent.

The US while asking both sides to show restraint, has asked Pakistan to tone down its anti-India rhetoric.

Afghanistan is expected to be discussed even as the Afghan peace process reaches a crucial stage. On Thursday, the US President had asked both India and Pakistan to fight the Islamic State(IS) in Afghanistan.

US President Donald Trump said, "countries are going to have to fight them....countries and that includes Russia and it includes Iran and Turkey and Iraq and Afghanistan and Pakistan and India. Look India is right there. They're not fighting it. We're fighting it. Pakistan is right next door. They're fighting it very little. Very very little. It's not fair."

Trade has been another contentious issue with Washington asking India to do more on that front. US President has in the past called India a "tariff king" and has been proding New Delhi to open its market for US companies.

Chidambaram's arrest was carried out to divert attention from issue of Article 370: Karti

The former finance minister of the country P Chidambaram will be presented in CBI court today. Chidambaram was arrested in the INX Media case on Wednesday night after he failed to get relief from the Supreme Court over CBI and ED's pursuit of him as the matter was not heard by the court despite repeated efforts of his lawyers.

Chidambaram's arrest became an intense political drama as CBI officials had to climb the wall of his residence to get inside his home.

The chief of CBI was part of the team that finally took the former finance minister into custody.

Earlier Chidambaram who was nowhere to be found for over 27 hours surfaced at the congress party headquarters to address the media

The former finance minister made an impassioned case about his whereabouts since Tuesday evening stating that he was not running from the law, in fact, he was seeking protection from the law

Chidambaram also spoke about the INX media case in claiming that the CBI has not charged him corruption.

In the INX media case, Chidambaram is an accused of FIPB (foreign investment promotion board) violation. INX media went on to receive foreign funds to the tune of Rs 305 crore from three Mauritius based firms- a violation of the FIPB order. It also invested money inINX media, another violation of the order.

CBI says that Karthi Chidambaram, son of P Chidambaram also benefitted from the deal and kickbacks were transferred to his account to settle foreign direct investment issues.

This was confirmed by none other than Indrani Mukherjee who turned approver in the case. Indrani Mukherjee in her testimony confirmed that she was asked to meet Karthi Chidambaram to settle INX media FDI deal instead of helping out Karthi Chidambaram.

She said that they met in a hotel in 2008 where Karthi Chidambaram asked her to transfer 1 million dollars in an overseas account.

Indrani's then-husband Peter Mukherjee objected to overseas transfer Karthi, in turn, suggested the names of two firms, chess management and advantage strategic for transfer of kickback.

Chidambaram's day of big setbacks began with India's top court has refused to listen to his plea.

Chidambaram's lawyers wanted an urgent hearing of the case. But the listing can only be done by the Chief Justice, Who did not acknowledge the presence of his high profile lawyers and left the court after the hearing of the Ram mandir case.

The case will now be heard on Friday.
