INX Media case: Supreme Court postpones hearing in Chidambaram's bail plea for Monday

US President Donald Trump plans to hold discussions on Kashmir and human rights with Prime Minister Narendra Modi this weekend at the G7 summit in Biarritz.

A senior administration official who briefed reporters on Trump’s agenda for the upcoming summit on Saturday said the Kashmir issue between India and Pakistan are expected to come up.

"President Trump will likely want to hear from Prime Minister Modi on how he plans to reduce regional tensions and uphold respect for human rights in Kashmir," the official said.

After a brief conversation with Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan on Tuesday, the US President once again offered his proposal to mediate on Kashmir, despite making it clear before that the ongoing dispute in the region should be resolved bilaterally by India and Pakistan.

Ramping up rhetoric against India, Pakistan is endlessly trying to involve the international community in the wake of New Delhi's historic decision to change the constitutional status of Jammu and Kashmir. This move comes despite the latter's, time and again, reiteration that the matter is strictly "internal" to the country.

Following the initial quashing of his plans on mediation by New Delhi, Trump had reaffirmed his position that Kashmir remains a bilateral issue between India and Pakistan.

However, adhering to Khan's request on Tuesday, the US President changed his stance and offered to mediate on the issue once again.

Calling Kashmir a "complicated situation", Trump said, "A lot has to do with religion. You have the Hindus, and you have the Muslims. This has been going on for decades."

"The president is also calling for Pakistan to prevent cross-border infiltration across the Line of Control and stop groups based on its soil that have attacked India in the past," the official added.

Tensions have simmered between India and Pakistan following the BJP-led Centre's decision to revoke Article 370 that guaranteed special status to Jammu and Kashmir. In addition, the Indian Parliament also passed a 'Reorganisation' bill that divided the region into Jammu and Kashmir--with a legislature and Ladakh-without a legislature.

Rattled by India's move, Pakistan, last week, sent its Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi to China to seek its help at the United Nations Security Council, urging it to call an emergency meeting on the issue. However, four out of five permanent members in the United Nations did not support Pakistan contentions over India's decision.

India, time and again, has also stated that Jammu and Kashmir is "entirely an internal matter" of the country and all steps were taken keeping in mind the bright future of people of the region.

Following Trump's initial offer to mediate on Kashmir, last month, New Delhi then had also categorically denied his request, saying that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had never requested the US president to meditate on the issue.

Speaking at an event in Gorakhpur, Narayana Murthy said, " While it's easy to drape ourselves in our national flag and shout 'Mera Bharat Mahaan' or 'Jai Ho', it is difficult to practice values. We have to identify ourselves as Indians first and rise above states, religion and caste."

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday said that Delhi and National Capital Region (NCR) are expected to witness light rain for the next three days.

However, as per weather predictions, these light showers will not have much impact on the overall temperature of the region as they would be short-lived.

The capital city of Uttar Pradesh- Lucknow is also witnessing on and off rains for quite some time now.

According to Skymet, a private weather forecasting agency, the region witnessed 66 mm of rains.

However, as of now, the rain showers have reduced in the region due to the formation of a low-pressure area and are now moving southwards towards Northeast Madhya Pradesh.

"Strong easterlies have been blowing over the region and with an abundance of moisture rainfall activity will be seen during the next three to four days. However, these rainfall activities are expected to be light only with isolated moderate showers during this time period," predicted Skymet.

Apart from Delhi-NCR and Lucknow, heavy to very heavy rainfall is very likely at isolated places over Odisha, Uttarakhand, East Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Assam.

Thunderstorm accompanied with lightning is likely at isolated places over Jharkhand, Bihar and West Bengal and Sikkim.

Strong winds, speed reaching 45-55 kmph, are very likely to prevail over southwest Arabian Sea, southeast and central Bay of Bengal and Andaman and the Nicobar Islands.

The organisation has also advised fishermen not to venture into these areas for the next few days.

Tamil Nadu Police are on high alert following intelligence inputs which had warned that up to six terrorists of the Lashkar-e-Taiba may have infiltrated the state. It is suspected that one of the six is a Pakistani National whereas the other members are Sri Lankan nationals.

Security in the state capital Chennai and the second-largest district Coimbatore has been tightened, with an increased vigil and police deployment at sensitive areas, religious gatherings, places of worship, public places, and places of transit.

Around 2000 police personnel have been deployed in Coimbatore where a red alert has been sounded. Check posts have been set-up at entry and crucial borders to check the incoming and outgoing vehicular traffic.

Speaking to WION, Sumit Sharan, Commissioner of Police, Coimbatore said, "the intelligence agencies are closely monitoring the developments and the police force is maintaining a strict vigil at the airport, railways stations, sensitive areas and vital installations".

Earlier in the day, Chennai Police Commissioner, A K Viswanathan told reporters, "Chennai Police are on heightened alert to avoid any untoward incidents and storming operations are also in progress".

Meanwhile, the neighbouring state Kerala was also on high alert after the report.

Taking cognizance of the alert, Kerala Director General of Police (DGP) Lokanath Behera has sent a directive to all district police chiefs to take caution.

In 1988, Coimbatore was struck by terrorism when over 50 people were killed due to serial blasts that occurred in various parts of the city.

In July this year, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) had conducted searches at the residences of 14 men who were deported to India from the UAE. They were arrested on July 15 for owing allegiance to the proscribed terrorist organisations Islamic State/Daesh, Al-Qaeda and SIMI, while being within and beyond India. They had allegedly conspired and made preparations to wage war against the government of India by forming the terror gang Ansarulla. After the interrogation of the initial 14 members, the agency also arrested two more members from Nagapattinam, hence taking the toll to 16.

Pakistan continues to drag its feet for the fourth round of Kartarpur technical meet which was requested by New Delhi earlier this month. India had requested Pakistan in early August to hold another round of technical meeting on Kartarpur corridor but did not receive any response so far. This week again India sent a reminder requesting Pakistan to hold the technical meet. The development comes despite Islamabad's public statements that it is committed to the initiative in the backdrop of it cutting diplomatic and trade ties with India due to New Delhi removing a special status for the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir. "Kartarpur initiative will continue," Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi had said. WION had first reported that New Delhi has requested for the meet in the first week of August, for which "A reminder was also issued", a source said. On the agenda will be three things, till the time bridge on Ravi river is not constructed, Pakistan should build a service road, provision to help pilgrims if an emergency arises and mechanism to share details of pilgrims. If the meet materialises, this will be the fourth round of technical talks between the two countries in 2019. So far three rounds of India-Pakistan technical meetings have taken place, March, April and May 2019, during which both sides endorsed the crossing point coordinates. When the second round of talks between Indian-Pakistan officials took place on July 14, Islamabad agreed to construct a bridge over the old Ravi creek that will allow all-weather pilgrimage to the Gurudwara Kartarpur Sahib, throughout the year. Both sides are keen to open the corridor, which was agreed by both sides last year ahead of the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Devji in November 2019.

The Supreme Court on Friday sought a response from the Centre on a batch of petitions challenging the constitutional validity of the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act, 2019, which criminalises triple talaq and provides for a jail term up to three years for the husband.

A bench headed by Justice NV Ramana issued notice to the government on separate petitions filed by politician and Islamic scholar Amir Rashadi Madni and two organisations -- Samastha Kerala Jamaithul Ulema and Jamiat Ulama-I-Hind.

The petitioners sought an interim stay on the law, which came into force on August 1 after receiving the presidential assent.

Samastha Kerala Jamiathul Ulema, a Kerala-based organisation of the Sunni Muslim scholars and clerics, in its petitions has submitted that the Act is violative of the fundamental rights enshrined in the Constitution.

It has contended that the law could create "grave public mischief and may lead to polarisation and disharmony in society".

Jet fuel supply to state-run carrier Air India has been stopped at six domestic airports because of unpaid dues to fuel provider, Indian Oil Corporation said on Friday.

"The joint decision to stop fuel supply to Air India from six airports, Kochi, Mohali, Pune, Ranchi, Patna and Visakhapatnam, was taken by the Oil marketing companies in the wake of long-overdue payments to the tune of Rs. 5,000 crore," the company said in a statement.

Air India Spokesperson Dhananjay Kumar also confirmed the report and said oil marketing companies (OMCs) led by Indian Oil have stopped jet fuel supply at six airports including - Ranchi, Mohali, Patna, Vizag, Pune and Cochin.

India, for years, has propped up the debt-laden airline by infusing equity to keep it alive - the government injected 39.75 billion rupees ($553 million) into Air India in the fiscal year that ended on March 31.

Country's aviation sector is facing turmoil with one of its biggest private carriers, Jet Airways in bankruptcy, while passenger growth in the market overall has slowed.

The government failed last year in its attempt to sell a 76 per cent stake in Air India due to a lack of interest from bidders who said they found some of the stake sale terms too onerous, making it a non-starter.

It is now redrawing the stake sale plans and as part of the effort it has hived off some of the loss-making airline's debt of $8.5 billion.

India may now consider selling up to a 100 per cent stake in the airline, a government official told Reuters in July, adding that it expects to get 150 billion rupees ($2.1 billion) from selling the airline.

A Delhi court on Friday extended till September 3 the interim protection from arrest and reserved its order on the anticipatory bail plea moved by senior Congress leader and former union minister P Chidambaram and his son Karti Chidambaram in connection with the Aircel-Maxis case.

The court reserved the order on the pre-arrest bail after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and Enforcement Directorate (ED) sought a fresh date to present their arguments.

According to rules and foreign direct investment (FDI) policy of the Central government, Chidambaram was only empowered to give approval to proposals involving foreign investment up to Rs 600 crore.
