Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad on Tuesday rejected the claim that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had asked for controversial Islamic preacher Zakir Naik to be extradited to India, reported news agency ANI.

Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad on Tuesday rejected the claim that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had asked for controversial Islamic preacher Zakir Naik to be extradited to India, reported news agency ANI. "Not many countries want him (Naik). India has not insisted. I met Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he did not ask me that he wants this man back. This man could be troublesome for India," Mahathir was quoted as saying during an interview with Malaysian radio station BFM`s show, the Breakfast Grille. Indian prime minister and his Malaysian counterpart met on the sidelines of the 5th East Economic Forum in Russia`s Far Eastern city early this month. After their meeting, Indian Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhale had said that the two leaders discussed the extradition of Naik. "Prime Minister Modi raised the issue of Zakir Naik`s extradition. Both the parties have decided that our officials will stay in contact regarding the matter and it is an important issue for us," Gokhale had said then. Naik, who has been living in Malaysia for the last three years, is facing charges of inciting communal disharmony and committing unlawful activities in India. He is also facing probe both in India and Bangladesh in connection with the terror attack at the Holey Artisan Bakery in Dhaka on July 2016. Insisting that Naik was given permanent citizenship under the previous government, Mahathir was quoted as saying Kuala Lumpur is trying to find a "place" to send Naik. "Well, he is not a national of this country. He has been given permanent status by the previous government. And permanent citizenship is not supposed to make any comment on his country`s system and politics He has breached that and now he will not be allowed to speak," Mahathir said. The Supreme Court on Tuesday asked the parties in the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid land dispute to come up with a tentative time schedule or date when the arguments can be concluded.

On the 25th day of the arguments, a five-judge Constitution bench headed by Chief Justice of India Justice Ranjan Gogoi asked all parties to apprise it as to when their arguments are likely to be completed, hinting that the court can pronounce the judgment as submissions are over.

On Friday, senior advocate Rajeev Dhavan, appearing for the Muslim side, sought a break in the hearing.

"You (Dhavan) sit with your associates and inform about the number of days you will take to conclude your arguments," Gogoi said and also asked the Hindu parties as to how much more time will take to reply to Muslim parties.

During the course of the hearing, Dhavan read the pleadings of the Shia's in order to show the position of Shia's then and now.

He submitted before the bench that there was no evidence to conclude that Lord Ram was born on the spot inside the central dome where the Babri Masjid once stood.

"There was no difference between Shias and Sunnis over the Babri Mosque and it was vested in Allah," Dhavan told the court.

Dhavan submitted some photos of Babri Mosque captured in 1950 in a bid to convince the court that the disputed land belonged to Muslims.

"We don't have any objection to the Hindus, but the land belongs to us (Muslim side)," Dhavan told the bench.

Dhavan will continue his arguments on Wednesday.

The top court is hearing a batch of petitions filed by -- Hindu and Muslim and others sides -- challenging the 2010 Allahabad High Court judgment, which divided the disputed site into three equal parts.

The day-to-day hearing started on August 6 after a court-appointed mediation panel failed to resolve the dispute through amicable settlement.

Highlighting the achievements of the first 100 days of his government on his 69th birthday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said that Article 370 was abrogated to solve a decades-long problem and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was the inspiration behind the decision.

He also said that his government has taken several steps in the first 100 days of its second tenure to double the income of farmers' families.

"The country is realising Sardar's dream of Ek Bharat, Shreshta Bharat (One India, Great India). Today, the country is trying to complete the tasks which were left incomplete during Independence and years thereafter," he said."People of Jammu and Kashmir had to face discrimination for 70 years.

The entire nation suffered the ill-effects and violence, unfulfilled hopes and aspirations. The country has taken an important decision with the inspiration of Sardar Saheb," he said while addressing a public meeting here at the site of Sardar Sarovar Dam.

In August, Parliament had scrapped Article 370 which gave special rights to Jammu and Kashmir and also bifurcated the state into two Union Territories - Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.

Modi said the decision has been taken to follow a new path to solve the decades-long problem.

"I am confident that with the active support of millions of colleagues from Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh and Kargil, we will be able to create a new stream of development and trust. I am fully committed to the unity and greatness of India. We have strengthened this commitment in the last 100 days," he added.

The Prime Minister, who was on a visit to his home state, outlined the benefits of PM Kisan scheme and pension scheme for farmers and small traders.

"Continuous efforts are on to double the income of every farming family of the country including Gujarat by 2022. After the formation of the new government, several steps have been taken in this direction in the last 100 days. Farmers are getting benefits of PM Kisan scheme. Pension scheme for farmers and small traders has also been started," he said.

The National Pension Scheme for traders and self-employed aims at providing a minimum assured pension of Rs 3000 to small traders and self-employed after attaining the age of 60.

Around three crore small traders are expected to benefit from the scheme.

Modi said that the Statue of Unity brought Kevadia and state of Gujarat on the tourism map of the world.

The Prime Minister highlighted that more than 23 lakh people have come to see the tallest statue of the world since it was unveiled last year.

"The discussion of the Statue of Unity is natural when it comes to tourism. Due to this, Kevadia and Gujarat have figured prominently on the tourism map of the whole world. It was unveiled only 11 months ago, but so far more than 23 lakh tourists have come here from within the country and around the world," he said.

"An average of 8,500 tourists are coming every day to the Statue of Unity. I am told that on the day of Janmashtami last month, more than 34,000 tourists reached here. Only 10,000 visit Statue of Liberty in America every day. It was constructed 133 years ago," he added.

Modi had announced to build the statue when he was the Chief Minister of Gujarat in memory of India`s first Deputy Prime Minister Sardar Patel who is credited with uniting all 562 princely states of pre-independent India.

The 182-metre statue is located on Sadhu Bet Island on Narmada river in Gujarat.

The Prime Minister said that when all projects related to Statue of Unity will be completed it will pave way for new employment opportunities for local people."Statue of Unity is also becoming a new medium of employment for the tribal sisters, brothers and youth of this place.

In the coming days when the roads and other projects related to tourism here will get completed, it will generate new employment opportunities," he said.

The Baloch Voice Association (BVA) has organised a protest at Broken Chair, in front of the United Nations office here, demanding its intervention to stop human rights violations in Balochistan.

The activists shouted slogans against the Pakistan Army and its spy agency, the Inter-Service Intelligence (ISI), for kidnappings, torturing and killing of human rights activists and intellectuals from Balochistan.

Munir Mengal, president of the BVA, said: "The main aim of today's protest was to raise the voices of the people who are being victimised back at home by the Pakistani army. What crime have they committed that the state is inflicting such brutalities and they have to pay that by their blood."

"We have asked the United Nations to intervene. It is not only restricted to any particular region. Instead, the Baloch, Pashtuns, and everybody is crying. They have joined hands with China and each day the incidents of human rights violations are rising," added Munir.

Thousands of Balochs are disappearing and the families are unable to trace their whereabouts. They are kidnapped by Pakistan's security agencies, the activists alleged.

Another Baloch activist, Abdul Wajid Baloch, told ANI, "We want to expose Pakistan over the atrocities and barbarism it has committed since the past 72 years. We want the UN to raise its voice against Pakistan and pressurise Pakistan to stop its systematic genocide against our people.

"India is a big democracy. We have a lot of expectations from India that it will help us in achieving our demands. If India wants regional peace, it has to support the Baloch Freedom Movement," he stressed.

The protesters also noted that the Baloch demand independence from Pakistan as it was an independent nation before 1947 and was forcibly occupied.

"On one hand, they say that India is doing atrocities in Kashmir while on the other, Pakistan is curbing the media from reporting in Ghotki, Sindh, Waziristan. If they are so correct with their agenda, then why don't they allow the media to report from its minority areas," Mir Saleem, organiser of the event, told ANI.

Pakistan is not only blamed for human rights violations in its own country, but its engagement of promoting 'jihad' in neighbouring Afghanistan is also condemned.

Political activists from Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) who took part in the UN Human Rights Council session in Geneva also condemned Pakistan's duplicity over handling of the Kashmir issue.

India has made it clear that it wants Islamic preacher Zakir Naik who has taken permanent residency in Malaysia back and is working towards it. External affairs minister S Jaishankar said, "Let me make it very clear for a record, there is extradition for Zakir naik, we want him back and that is what we are working on." The development comes in the backdrop of Malaysian PM Mahathir bin Mohamad rejecting the claim that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had asked for Zakir Naik to be extradited to India during the bilateral meet on the sidelines of Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok earlier this month. Jaishankar said, "My understanding of Vladivostok meeting was, that Zakir naik issue did come up and the expectation was communicated from our side that officials concerned should meet quickly and sort out this matter to our satisfaction." India had sent its extradition request in January of 2018 to Malaysia and "from January 2018, we have been persistently and relentless pursuing this matter at all levels" Jaishankar explained. Born in Mumbai, Zakir Naik is wanted in India and is known for his hate speeches. In 2017, India had revoked his passport and declared him an offender. There is now growing criticism of Naik in Malaysia as well where he has been involved in hate speeches against minority Hindu population.

A court here on Tuesday reserved its order on the anticipatory bail plea of former Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar, who is accused of tampering with evidence in Saradha scam case.

District Sessions Judge Md Shabbar Rashidi heard the arguments from both the sides and reserved the order.

Kumar in his plea contended that he was merely a part of the special investigation team (SIT) probing the case and that there were several officers above him in the hierarchy.

The CBI, on the other hand, sought the custodial interrogation of Kumar.

Earlier today, a special court in Barasat had refused to hear the anticipatory bail plea, saying it does not have the jurisdiction to pass an order on the application.

Special Court Judge Sanjib Talukdar had asked Kumar to move Barasat's District Sessions Court for relief in the matter.

For quite some time Kumar has been avoiding appearing before the CBI despite being summoned after the Calcutta High Court withdrew protection from the arrest granted to him in the case.

Kumar was a part of the SIT constituted by the state government to probe the scam before the Supreme Court transferred it to the CBI.

Earlier, the CBI had said it needs to interrogate the former Kolkata Police Commissioner in the case.

Companies in India will seek exemptions from the government's planned ban on certain plastic items, fearing the move will disrupt supply chains and raise costs ahead of a festive season, according to sources and an industry document seen by Reuters.

India is likely to impose a nationwide ban on plastic bags, cups, small bottles, straws and some types of sachets next month as part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's efforts to reduce use of pollution-causing, single-use plastic.

But the plans have stoked fears among consumer firms, which, use plastic in packaging for everything from sodas and biscuits to ketchup and shampoo.

"This has created an existential issue for multiple sectors," said the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), a lobby group, in a two-page draft note, seen by Reuters, which is likely to be finalised and sent to the government in the coming days.

The CII will ask the government to consult industry executives and define what will be categorised as single-use plastics, while also pitching for some exemptions, according to the note.

It says small-sized plastic bottles used for pharmaceutical or health products should be exempted as there is no alternate available. Sachets made from so-called multi-layered packaging should also not be banned, as that could disrupt supplies of key products such as biscuits, salt and milk, the CII draft says.

A senior Indian government official said several industry representations were being reviewed, but the aim was to "get rid of the menace of plastic pollution" without causing disruption.

In an Independence Day speech on August 15, Modi urged people and government agencies to "take the first big step" on October 2 towards freeing India of single-use plastic.

India lacks a system for management of plastic waste, but environmentalists have hailed Modi's move, saying it will help combat plastic waste that chokes rivers and drains.

A ban on certain plastics from October 2, however, will come just weeks ahead of big Hindu festivals for which business plans are laid out far in advance because they typically see a sharp rise in consumer purchases.

Two industry sources said Amazon.com Inc, which uses plastics in its packaging, has been concerned that a possible ban could disrupt its operations ahead of festivities, and during its mega annual discount sale that starts September 29.

In recent weeks, executives from Coca-Cola Co, PepsiCo and consumer goods seller Hindustan Unilever have been part of industry delegations that met government officials to express concerns and discuss alternate packaging solutions, according to a person with direct knowledge.

Coca-Cola said in a statement that all its primary packaging does not consist of single-use plastic. Pepsi said its target was to make 100 per cent of its packaging recyclable, compostable, or biodegradable by 2025. Hindustan Unilever did not respond to a request for comment.

Amazon did not respond but has previously said that it plans to replace single-use plastic in its packaging by June 2020.

"The ban has ramifications for all sectors like food processing, dairy, garments, toys," said Jayesh Rambhia of All India Plastic Manufacturers Association, which has 22,000 companies as members. "People, and companies are pulling their hair today."
