It is often said that the presence of people can be felt long after they've left for higher places. Nothing stands truer, as the next UN General Assembly session fast approaches, without the presence of one of India's most beloved leaders, Sushma Swaraj.

The people's External Affairs Minister, Swaraj breathed her last in New Delhi on August 6. India's foreign policy under the Swaraj-Modi leadership put the country on the international map as a force which shapes global agenda.

Amongst other things, the stalwart never shied from shedding light on Pakistan and its "export of terrorism" on international platforms.

During her statement at the General Debate of the 72nd Session of the UNGA in 2017, she had famously highlighted how despite "being the principal destination of Pakistan's nefarious export of terrorism," India had produced scholars, engineers, and doctors while Islamabad had produced terrorists and terrorist camps.

"Pakistan's Prime Minister Shahid Khakan Abbasi accused India of state-sponsored terrorism and of violating human rights. Those listening had only one observation, 'Look who's talking!'&nbsp;A country that has been the world's greatest exporter of havoc, death and inhumanity became a champion of hypocrisy by preaching about humanity from this podium," she had said.

Tearing into Pakistan, Swaraj further said that while India had created and established institutions like IITs, IIMs, and AIIMS which got pride to the country, Islamabad had created terror groups like Lashkar-e-Taiba, Jaish-e-Mohammed, Haqqani network, to name a few.

Just last year, she tore into Pakistan again. New Delhi had also called off a meeting with Islamabad on the sidelines of the UNGA after three jawans were brutally killed by 'Pakistan-based entities'&nbsp;and Islamabad had released a series of postage stamps glorifying a terrorist and terrorism.

"On December 9, 2016, I personally went to Islamabad and offered a comprehensive bilateral dialogue. But soon after, Pak-sponsored terrorists attacked our air force base in Pathankot on 2nd January. Please explain to me how we could pursue talks in the midst of terrorist bloodshed?" Swaraj had questioned during her speech at the UNGA last year.

"Even now, after the new government came to power, the Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan wrote to Prime Minister Modi suggesting a meeting between Foreign Ministers in New York. We accepted the proposal. But, within hours of our acceptance, news came that terrorists had killed three of our jawans. Does this indicate a desire for dialogue?" the late EAM had added during her speech.

Making India's stand against terrorism crystal clear, Swaraj told Pakistan that talks and terror could not go together. It has been India's long-standing condition that Islamabad needs to dismantle all terror infrastructure on its soil and stop providing support to terror outfits for the resumption of bilateral talks.

Even though the international community was made aware of Pakistan's hand-in-glove nature with terrorism through Swaraj's initiatives, the world was provided with cold, hard proof after the February 14 Pulwama terror attacks, which claimed the lives of 40 CRPF personnel.

A terrorist belonging to Pakistan-based terror outfit Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) had rammed his bomb-laden vehicle into a passing CRPF convoy in Jammu and Kashmir's Pulwama, leading to the devastating loss of Indian personnel.

Refusing to be cornered because of Islamabad's patronage to terrorism, New Delhi launched extensive diplomatic efforts globally to get the Pakistan-based JeM chief Masood Azhar listed as a global terrorist at the United Nations Security Council which became a reality on May 1, handing New Delhi one of its biggest diplomatic victories.

Soon after India abrogated Article 370 which accorded special status to Jammu and Kashmir, Swaraj tweeted, "@narendramodiji - Thank you Prime Minister. Thank you very much. I was waiting to see this day in my lifetime," before she was rushed to AIIMS in New Delhi, where she later breathed her last.

As Pakistan looks to rake up the Kashmir issue at the upcoming UNGA, India has vowed not to use the United Nations as a platform for "dramatic purposes."

"India is a serious actor. Its voice is heard with seriousness. What we do, when we do, we will do the way we want it. It's not for broadcast purposes you will appreciate. We are a player of consequence in the world, not dramatist personae who just is a fleeting presence on the world stage," India's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Syed Akbaruddin told ANI, while taking a veiled jibe at Pakistan.

Even as India preps to address another UNGA session, it is difficult to forget the role Swaraj took on to bring terrorism and climate change to the forefront of the global agenda.

There's no better partnership that comes to mind when deliberating on why India's voice is heard louder today on global platforms than of Swaraj and Modi's.

This is why it becomes important to remember the leader as we go forth on our path of becoming the superpower we`re projected to be.&nbsp;

The Indian government's move to revoke Article 370 that accorded special status to Jammu and Kashmir has a "national security connotation", External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said on Friday, while emphasising that the country "lives in a tough neighbourhood" and faces more than its fair share of national security challenges.

Addressing the Finnish Institute of International Affairs (FIIA), the minister, in an apparent reference to Pakistan, said that the most prominent national security challenge that India has been subjected to for many decades is the "cross border terrorism", which has cost more than 40,000 lives in the past 30 decades.

"We are opposed to terrorism in all its forms and manifestations and believe there is no justification for it, whatsoever. But it is not just enough to have a position. When subjected to terrorist attacks, any polity that is sincerely committed to the welfare of its people will surely respond," Jaishankar said.

"And indeed, that is precisely what we have done in recent years. Even the changes that were approved last month by the Indian Parliament with respect to Jammu and Kashmir, while driven by the needs of governance and development, and have a national security connotation," Jaishankar added.

Referring to Pakistan, Jaishankar said that the epicentre of terrorism is "right in our neighbourhood. But even as we take our responsive measures, our belief is that this is not just a concern for one country but for the entire international community."

Election Commission to announce Maharashtra, Haryana poll dates today

In line with the `banish single-use plastic` drive in the country, The Election Commission on Saturday asked political parties, candidates and their agents in Haryana and Maharashtra to desist from using plastic, polythene and other environmentally hazardous materials in publicity material for the Assembly polls next month.

Chief Election Commissioner Sunil Arora, who announced the poll schedule for the two states at a press conference here, said that that the Commission has been asking political parties to use only environment-friendly material for campaign purposes since long.

"Considering the long-term deleterious impact of materials like plastics, polythene etc. on the life-giving and life-sustaining environment, the Commission, has directed that all political parties, contesting candidates and their authorized agents, etc., shall desist from utilizing environmentally hazardous materials like plastics, polythene, etc. for the preparation and usage election-related publicity materials during the ensuing elections to the legislative assemblies of Haryana and Maharashtra," he said.

He said the district election officers and returning officers have been directed to emphasise the importance of environment protection and preservation during the meetings with the political parties and contesting candidates and "ensure that instructions of the Commission with regard to the usage of non-eco-friendly materials like plastics, polythene etc during electioneering shall be adhered to by all concerned".

"The CEOs shall impress upon the importance of using eco-friendly and bio-degradable materials for campaign material to various political parties in states and issue necessary instructions in this regard," he said.

Arora said the poll panel had on February 26 this year again instructed that all political parties should take measures to not use single-use plastic as campaign materials (for posters, banners) during elections.

The Commission, he said, has issued advisories on several occasions urging political parties and candidates to avoid single-use plastic and non-biodegradable material in their election campaign activities.

Both Haryana and Maharashtra will go for a single-phase assembly poll on October 21. The government has been pushing for eliminating the use of single-use plastic. The poll panel`s latest thrust on using environment-friendly material in poll campaign is expected to add momentum to the efforts towards curbing the use of plastic and polythene.

BJP MP Vijay Goel on Saturday said that in both Haryana and Maharashtra, his party will form the government and that people know it very well.

His comments came soon after the Election Commission announced the dates of Assembly elections to be held in both the states.

Voting will take place on October 21, while counting of votes will be held on October 24 in both the states.

On being asked about the upcoming elections, Goyal told ANI, "In both the states, BJP will win and people know that very well."

Goel, who was protesting here against Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal over the money being spent on taking out advertisements, added that AAP will also not return to power in the national capital.

The BJP MP lashed out at Kejriwal and said that his government had not worked during its tenure and is now spending money on advertisements.

"For the past five years, Kejriwal did not work so the only option left for him now is to take out advertisements and resort to fake publicity. He used people`s money for advertisement and publicity," the BJP MP alleged.

"Everyday we see Kejriwal`s photo in these advertisements whether it is related to dengue, Ganesh Chaturthi, Valmiki Jayanti or any other event," he said.

He further said that Delhi has become one of the most polluted cities in the country.

"There are traffic jams and the huge problem of car parking. The Mohalla clinics are opened in small kiosks. Tourists see all this and say that the capital of the country is in such a bad shape," said Goel.

"People of Delhi are smart they know that advertisements being taken out by Kejriwal are fake," he added.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has attended several Indian community events around the world after he assumed office in 2014.

But "Howdy Modi" is unique. Not because of the sheer size of it, but also because of one high profile attendee.

The event at Houston on September 22 will be the largest gathering for an elected foreign leader other than the Pope and it will be a celebration of the cultures of India and the US.&nbsp;

The event which will be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump will see the giant NRG stadium filled to the capacity.

More than 50,000 Indian-Americans from across the US have registered for the “Howdy, Modi! Shared Dreams, Bright Futures” event.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will share the stage with American President Donald Trump. Both leaders will address the mega rally.&nbsp;

PM Modi had addressed more than 19 thousand people at New York's Madison Square Garden. Almost the same number of people had attended the event in San Jose in 2015. So, the crowd will be almost three times in this event.&nbsp;

More than 60 prominent lawmakers will also be in attendance.&nbsp;

Democratic candidate for the 2020 election — Tulsi Gabbard — will skip the event. She is the first Indian-origin woman candidate for an American presidential race. She sent out a video message — welcoming Prime Minister Modi to Houston.

NRG Stadium, formerly Reliant Stadium, is a multi-purpose stadium in Houston. The stadium is the home of the Houston Texans football team.&nbsp;

Prime Minister Modi will leave for Houston tonight. He is also scheduled to hold a roundtable meeting with the top executives of American energy companies.&nbsp;

A big announcement could be in store

Ahead of the big event — US President Donald Trump has said that he could announce something from the stage. Howdy Modi is an opportunity for US President Trump to win some support from the Indian community. The next presidential election in America is scheduled for 2020&nbsp;in which the influential Indian-American community is expected to play a big role.&nbsp;Trump, a Republican, has already announced his candidature.

According to a 2018 survey, Indian Americas are much more disapproving of Trump — than the average Asian Americans.

This will be the third meeting between Modi and Trump this year. The previous two were on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Japan in June and the G7 Summit in France in July.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Saturday visited the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) situated in Bhabani Bhaban area to enquire if the organisation is in contact with Rajeev Kumar.

Kumar, a former Kolkata police commissioner, is wanted in connection with the probe into Saradha chit fund scam.

The Saradha group of companies had allegedly duped scores of people to the tune of Rs 2,500 crore promising higher rates of return on their investments.

Kumar is accused of tampering with evidence in Saradha scam case. He was a part of the SIT constituted by the state government to probe the scam before the Supreme Court transferred it to the CBI.

On Monday, Kumar evaded the CBI for the third time even as the probe agency spanned out to search for him after which it moved Alipore court in the city, seeking an arrest warrant for Rajeev Kumar.

Disposing off the agency`s prayer, the court said the CBI does not need its warrant against Rajeev Kumar, as the Supreme Court and the Calcutta High Court had already lifted the bar on his arrest in the chit fund case.&nbsp;

Preparations are in full swing as Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is all set to address the big-ticket Indian diaspora event 'Howdy Modi' in Houston on Sunday.&nbsp;

The excitement among the Indian-Americans has reached a crescendo when the US President Donald Trump announced his presence along with some Democrats signifying the Importance of India-US ties.&nbsp;

Before embarking on his visit to the United States, the Prime Minister laid out in clear terms his mission -- to present India as the vibrant land of opportunities, as a reliable partner, and as a global leader -- and the PM's jam-packed schedule is a testimony to this mission.

Modi will also be looking to provide fresh impetus to India-US ties.&nbsp;

PM Modi highlighted education, skills, research and technology as sectors where the two countries can cooperate.&nbsp;

''Together, India and the US can make a stable and prosperous world,'' he said.&nbsp;

Trade has been a crucial sticking point between the two countries, and the two leaders will be looking to iron out differences when they sit down for their third bilateral meet on Tuesday.

At the United Nations, the prime minister will showcase his government's achievements over the last five years. He will also outline India's future as a leader in shaping global politics and socio-economic agenda.

Multilateralism will be the overarching theme of Modi's pitch at the United Nations.&nbsp;

Modi will also be launching the Gandhi solar park at the UN premises. The park with 193 solar panels has been built using a one million dollar grant from the Indian government.

With yesterday's corporate tax cut in his arsenal, Modi will be looking to woo the multinationals firms to invest in India.

But all these engagements will probably be dwarfed by Howdy Modi event scheduled on Sunday. With over 50,000 people slated to attend, the event will be the largest ever gathering for a visiting head of state in the US.

In 2014, Modi was a political enigma when he visited the US but now, 5 years later the prime minister will arrive on the American shores as one of the most sought-after leaders at the global stage.&nbsp;

It will be the largest gathering for any democratically elected foreign leader in the US. The biggest gathering which the US has seen for a visiting leader has been for the Pope. The big focus will be on US President Donald Trump's presence at the event.

"It is the relationship between the US and India. This is the main focus. Personal chemistry plays an important role. They have become a good friend", Malani said when asked on Trump's presence.

This is the first time when an American President will be participating in the diaspora event and address the Indian-American community. Senior Democratic leadership of the United States will also be present at this event, this includes several elected Congressional representatives from both the parties.&nbsp;

Last week External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar called Trump's participation a tribute to the role played by the Indian-Americans in the American society.

"I regard this as a great achievement of the Indian-American community that if today you have an event of this size and you have someone like President Trump coming there, this shows where that community has reached, how it is regarded in the US and respect it commands there... it is great achievement of the community,"&nbsp;Jaishankar said.

Before the Houston diaspora event, the prime minister has addressed the Indian-American community twice during his first term - first at the Madison Square Garden, New York in 2014 followed by his address in San Jose in the year 2015.

The United States and India are racing to negotiate a limited trade deal that US&nbsp;President Donald Trump and <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/from-howdy-modi-diaspora-event-meet-with-trump-multilateral-engagements-to-unga-address-pm-modis-jam-packed-us-schedule-251007">Prime Minister Narendra Modi</a> can sign at the United Nations General Assembly in New York at the end of September, people familiar with the talks said.

A deal between the world's most populous democracies would be a welcome victory for Trump, whose administration has made little headway negotiating an end to its prolonged trade war with China. Trump is also expected to sign a deal with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe next week that lowers Japanese farm tariffs.

The deal under discussion with India would lower some tariffs on US&nbsp;produce and restore preferential treatment for some Indian exports to the United States, the sources said.

Trump and <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/excitement-builds-up-as-indian-diaspora-gears-up-for-electrifying-howdy-modi-event-251008">Modi</a> will meet this Sunday in Houston at an Indian-American rally dubbed "<a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/will-present-india-as-global-leader-says-pm-modi-ahead-of-us-visit-250880">Howdy Modi</a>!" in a 50,000-seat stadium -- a sign of their warming relations, which are contributing to expectations for a "mini-deal."

"There's a push to get something done with India, with an eye for UNGA," said a Washington-based source familiar with the discussions.

Trump has demanded better terms of trade from most of the top commercial partners of the United States and blames previous deals for the loss of millions of US&nbsp;manufacturing jobs.

US-India trade relations have been fraught. Trump has repeatedly complained about India's high tariff rates, including a 50 per cent tariff on Harley-Davidson motorcycles.

The United States has also taken issue with India's new investment rules on e-commerce that limit how companies like Amazon.com Inc and Walmart-backed Flipkart can do business in a rapidly growing online market set to touch $200 billion by 2027.

"We’ve been talking to the Americans, we have engaged them for many months now," Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar said at a news conference this week. "My expectation is that some of the sharper edges, they would be addressed in some forms in the not too distant future."

A US&nbsp;trade representative spokesman did not respond to a request for comment on the US-India talks.

Modi, like Trump, has used tariffs to try to boost investment in manufacturing, a key part of his "Make-In-India" campaign to attract foreign cash and create factory jobs for millions of youth entering the workforce.

Apple Inc supplier Foxconn recently expanded production of iPhones in India to avoid a 20% import tariff and diversify its supply chain from China.

Bilateral US&nbsp;trade with India, at $142 billion last year, is just a fraction of the $737 billion in US-China trade.

Tariffs&nbsp;

The United States in June ended duty-free access for about $5.7 billion worth of Indian exports under its Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) program, including chemicals, plastics, leather and rubber goods, and auto parts. India was the largest beneficiary of the GSP, which was designed to help developing countries that dates from the 1970s. India responded with higher retaliatory tariffs on 28 US&nbsp;products, including almonds, apples and walnuts.

India is the largest buyer of US&nbsp;almonds, paying $543 million for more than half of US&nbsp;almond exports in 2018, according to the US&nbsp;Department of Agriculture. It is the second-largest buyer of US&nbsp;apples.

Pork, dairy, nuts&nbsp;

The talks are focused on US&nbsp;demands that India reduce agricultural tariffs, including those for almonds, pork, dairy products, cherries, apples and other commodities, people familiar with the talks in both Washington and New Delhi said.

India is likely to allow some US&nbsp;dairy imports, the official said. Another Indian official said the United States was pushing India to remove high pricing barriers on imported US&nbsp;medical devices including cardiac stents.

In return, India wants the GSP restored for a few more years, as Modi struggles to boost exports dampened by sluggish global demand made worse by the US-China trade war. New Delhi also wants market access for some of its farm products such as grapes to export to the United States.

The United States is also seeking lower tariffs on high-end electronics products, one of the Indian officials said.

Both sides are discussing revising India's domestic content rules on ethanol to allow more imports of the US&nbsp;fuel additive, two US&nbsp;sources familiar with the discussions said.

A narrow deal would be a positive first step and leave thorny issues aside such as the new e-commerce rules, said Roger Murry, deputy director of the Alliance for Fair Trade with India, a group of US&nbsp;trade associations.

"We're hopeful that the Houston events can be bolstered by some real progress on the trade front that shows the US&nbsp;and India can negotiate some reasonable solutions," Murry said.

As a part of the Namami Gange project, a cleanliness drive was organised at Yamuna ghat near Kalindi Kunj on World Cleanup Day on Saturday in which many young volunteers participated.

"The <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/ganga-to-be-cleaned-within-13-months-nitin-gadkari-200387">Namami Gange Project</a> can only be successful if people put combined effort. Our team usually comes every month to clean the river bank. Landing a helping hand, other NGOs have also started participating and they come every week to clean the river banks," Rajiv Ranjan Mishra, Director General (DG) of Namami Gange project told ANI.

The members are now trying to pull Residents Welfare Associations (RWAs) of the city to urge people to participate in this project.

They are also appealing the residents and school children to come forward and actively participate in it.

"To mark the birth anniversary of Mahatama Gandhi on October 2, we will organise a cleanliness drive on large scale on every river bank. Another campaign which is receiving a good response is the Swachta hi Seva campaign in which people are participating in large numbers," he added.

A physically handicapped man, Bhavesh Tipadiya also actively participated in the campaign with others.

"Everyone should realise their responsibility towards nature. If one will take part, others will also follow. We should not use single-use plastics. Money cannot buy clean air, water, therefore it is our responsibility to protect it for future," he said.

The stage is all set at the sprawling NRG stadium for the historic 'Howdy Modi' event here on Sunday where <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/pm-modi-hails-trumps-special-gesture-towards-houston-diaspora-event-howdy-modi-249898">Prime Minister Narendra Modi</a> is going to address close to 50,000 Indian-Americans, with <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/pm-modi-to-meet-us-president-donald-trump-on-september-24-in-new-york-250670">US President Donald Trump</a> in tow.

The event, which will be hosted by Texas India (TI) Forum on September 22, "is an attempt to bring together tens of thousands of people to encourage and explore common interests and an expanded partnership between the United States and India's fast-growing economy,'' as per a statement by the organisers.

Even as rains have brought life to a standstill in the American state, the organisers remain positive about the success of Sunday's mega-event, which will be the first of its kind.

The White House on Monday (local time) had confirmed Trump's plan to attend the occasion in what will be one of the largest events to welcome a foreign head of government ever in the history of the United States.

In the United States, the Houston event will mark the first time the head of the states would meet outside of Washington DC or New York, where the United Nations is headquartered.

Earlier in a statement, White House Press Secretary Stephanie Grisham said, "It (Modi-Trump joint rally) will be a great opportunity to emphasise the strong ties between the people of the United States and India, to reaffirm the strategic partnership between the world's oldest and largest democracies, and to discuss ways to deepen their energy and trade relationship."

PM Modi has previously addressed similar gatherings at Madison Square Garden in New York and the SAP Center in San Jose.

Earlier in a statement, White House Press Secretary Stephanie Grisham said, "It (Modi-Trump joint rally) will be a great opportunity to emphasise the strong ties between the people of the United States and India, to reaffirm the strategic partnership between the world's oldest and largest democracies, and to discuss ways to deepen their energy and trade relationship." PM Modi has previously addressed similar gatherings at Madison Square Garden in New York and the SAP Center in San Jose.

India, last week, had said it is quite confident at the United Nations Human Rights Council to thwart any attempts by Pakistan to raise the Kashmir issue.

Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said, "we are quite confident that the members of UNHRC are aware of our position on Article 370 and the steps we have taken in J&amp;K to ensure normalcy".

Calling Pakistan's situation quite desperate, the MEA spokesperson said, "In case of doublespeak, its quite audacious on Pakistan that the country, which is harbouring terrorists, which is the epicentre of terrorism, is pretending to speak on behalf of the global community on human rights, this is very rich. Subsequently, in his banquet speech, Kovind said the "centuries-old people-to-people exchanges have been the bedrock of our ties".

Similarly, over the ages, Mongolian scholars and pilgrims came to India in pursuit of Buddhist studies and spiritual blessings. This ageless tradition continues. India, today, is privileged to host around 800 Mongolian students engaged in Buddhist studies," Kovind said.
