On a day when Tamil Nadu has seen the total number of Covid-19 cases breach the 40,000 mark, there’s also been a miracle recovery of a 97-year-old man with health complications that comes as a ray of hope.

Krishna Murti was admitted at a private hospital in Chennai on May 30, after he tested positive for coronavirus. The patient had shown symptoms such as fever, cough and mild breathlessness. Adding to the complications were his history of hypertension and coronary heart disease.

A statement from the hospital said that he was provided with oxygen support to aid in breathing and special assistance to help him eat and move. He was provided high-protein vegetarian meals.

Shortly after admission, his fever is said to have reduced, while breathing also improved. Later, he was able to have his own meals and move on his own.

“Kauvery hospital has now successfully treated and discharged over 200 patients and Mr Krishna is our oldest patient so far. Taking his case as an example we wish to tell people to not fall prey to fear and lose hope” Dr Vijayalakshmi Balakrishnan, Senior Consultant - Infectious Diseases said.

The patient was later discharged after his coronavirus test results returned negative.

Tamil Nadu has seen a total of 40,698 coronavirus cases of which 18,281 are active. Chennai alone has seen a total of 28,924 cases of which 13,906 are active. Tamil Nadu’s recovery rate has hovered around 50 percent, and currently 22,047 persons have recovered from the virus.

Movement of people will remain prohibited across the country from 9 pm to 5 am during the ongoing 'Unlock 1', but there are no restrictions on plying of buses with passengers and goods trucks on highways, the Centre said on Friday.

In a communication to all states, Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla also said that the purpose of restricting the movement of individuals during the night was primarily intended at preventing congregation of people and ensuring social distancing, but not hampering supply chains and logistics.

He said that the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) had issued guidelines prohibiting the movement of people between 9 pm and 5 am throughout the country, except for essential activities. Bhalla said that the MHA has noticed that some states and union territories (UTs) are restricting the movement of people and vehicles on highways between 9 pm and 5 am, which is hindering their smooth passage.

"I would like to clarify that the purpose of restricting the movement of individuals, except for essential activities, between 9 pm and 5 am, is primarily intended to prevent congregation of persons and to ensure social distancing," he said.

"The restriction does not apply to instances of loading/unloading of goods (as part of supply chains and logistics); buses carrying persons and trucks and goods carriers plying on state and national highways; or persons travelling to their destinations after disembarking from buses, trains and flights," Bhalla said.

The Union home secretary said, accordingly, states and UTs are advised not to prevent such movement. He said that necessary instructions to this effect should be issued to district and local authorities. The nationwide lockdown was first announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 24 for 21 days in a bid to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus.

The lockdown was first extended till May 3 and then again till May 17. It was further extended till May 31. The lockdown is now restricted only to containment zones across the country and will continue till June 30.

A large number of social, economic, religious and sports activities are currently allowed to function, under what the MHA has termed as 'Unlock 1'.

An old temple, submerged in river Mahanadi, has reappeared after 11 years in Nayagarh district.

The archaeological survey team of the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (Intach) has claimed that they have discovered an ancient submerged temple in the Mahanadi upstream from Cuttack.

The native peoples of that area said that there are more than 22 temples submerged in that area.

The 60 feet submerged temple dates back to the late 15th or early 16th century, because of the construction style of the Mastaka and material used for the construction.

“The 60-ft temple which belongs to Lord Gopinath, a form of Lord Vishnu dates back to late 15th or early 16th century,” Archaeologists Deepak Kumar Nayak said.

In the mid-19th Century, the deities of the vulnerable temple were removed and installed in a safer and higher place, which is presently the Gopinath Dev temple of Padmavati village.

The area where the temple has been discovered used to be considered as ‘Satapatana’. Padmavati village was part of Satapatana which is an amalgam of seven villages. The temple was dedicated to Lord Gopinath Dev.

The last time the ‘mastaka’ was seen was about eleven years ago.

The government is mulling to include sudden loss of taste and smell as a criteria for COVID-19 testing, sources said on Friday as India witnessed a surge in coronavirus instances with total caseload racing towards the three lakh mark.

The issue was discussed in a meeting of the National Task Force on COVID-19 held last Sunday, but no consensus on the matter has been reached yet.

"At the meeting, some members suggested including loss of taste and smell in the eligibility criteria for COVID-19 testing stating that several patients have been reporting symptoms like these," a source in the health ministry said.

According to an expert, even though the symptom is not specific to COVID-19 as one may suffer from loss of smell and taste when they have flu or influenza, it could be one of the early signs of the onset of the disease and prompt detection may help in early treatment.

The US' national public health institute the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) had in early May incorporated "a new loss of taste or smell" in the list of COVID-19 symptoms.

According to the Indian Council of Medical Research's revised testing strategy for COVID-19 issued on May 18, all returnees and migrants with symptoms of influenza-like illness (ILI) are to be tested within seven days of the onset of the trails.

All hospitalised patients who develop ILI symptoms and frontline workers involved in containment and mitigation of COVID-19 having such symptoms will also be tested for COVID-19 through the RT-PCR test, it said, adding asymptomatic direct and high-risk contacts of a confirmed case has to be tested once between day five and 10 of coming in contact.

Symptomatic ILI patients living in coronavirus hotspots or containment zones, all patients of severe acute respiratory infection (SARI), symptomatic healthcare workers also are eligible for testing as per the guidelines.

Coronavirus: Hospitals not showing due concern to dead bodies, says Supreme Court

The Supreme Court Friday asked the Centre and the airline companies to discuss modalities for full refund of tickets for domestic and international flights which were cancelled following the COVID-19 lockdown.

A bench of Justices Ashok Bhushan, S K Kaul and M R Shah asked the Centre to take a stand on the issue and work out ways for full refund.

A plea was also raised that airlines across the world are facing tough time due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and they too be heard as parties to the plea filed by an NGO.

The top court has now fixed the plea for further hearing after three weeks.

It had on Monday had sought responses from the Centre and the DGCA on the plea seeking directions to airlines operating domestic and international fights in India to refund full amount collected for tickets due to cancellation of flights in wake of the lockdown.

The plea urged the court to declare the alleged action of airlines of not refunding entire value of cancelled air tickets as violative of the civil aviation requirement issued by the authority.

"It is submitted that the airlines instead of providing the full refund of the amount collected for the tickets due to ancellation, are providing a credit shell, valid up to one year, which is clear in violation of the Civil Aviation Requirement of May 2008 issued by the DGCA which clearly states that the option of holding the refund amount in credit shell by the airlines shall be the prerogative of the passenger and not a default practice of the airline," the plea said.

Referring to the earlier prevalent practice, it has said in case of credit card payments, refund shall be made by the airlines within seven days of the cancellation to account of the credit-card holder and in case of a cash transaction, the refund shall be "made immediately" by the airline office from where the ticket was purchased.

The Civil Aviation Requirement of May 2008 sets a limit of 30 working days for airlines to complete the refund process for tickets booked through travel agents/ portals, the plea has said.

The plea referred to the April 16 office memorandum of the Ministry of Civil Aviation which deals with refund of ticket amount collected without levy of cancellation charge.

It claimed that the memorandum directed airlines to provide full refund to only those people who booked tickets during the lockdown period, and "leaving out people who booked tickets prior to lockdown but the flights cancelled due to lockdown amounts to treating equals unequally and thus the same is in clear violation of the fundamental rights guaranteed under the Constitution".

The plea said: "It is clear from the Office Memorandum that directs the airlines to refund only those tickets that were booked during the lockdown period, leaves out the vast majority of passengers who had booked tickets before the flights were banned."

"Which indirectly approves to the practice of the airlines providing Credit Shell for booking effected before the lockdown, though the same clearly violates the refund rules of the DGCA."

There was no question of anyone booking a ticket during the lockdown knowing that schedule passenger flights were cancelled for period of travel and this made Office Memorandum of the Ministry of Civil Aviation "ambiguous and devoid of any logic", the plea has claimed.

The water at the 50,000-year-old Lonar Crater Lake in Buldhana district has mysteriously turned reddish-pink over the past week.

The change in colour of water of the lake, having a mean diameter of 1.2 km has left forest officials and scientist puzzled as on normal days, the lake appears stays greenish in colour.

Experts say this is not the first time that the colour change has happened, but this time it is more glaring.

Lonar lake: Before versus after

A similar phenomenon was reported from the Talawe wetlands in Navi Mumbai on May 16 as one section of the wetland patch had turned pink.

In the Lonar case, after local residents shared photographs with the Maharashtra forest department, the latter on Wednesday asked the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI), Nagpur to assess why there has been a change in colour.

“We will be collecting water samples and sending it to NEERI soon. We will know the exact reason within two weeks,” said MS Reddy, additional principal chief conservator of forests (wildlife) and field director, Melghat Tiger Reserve.

Other officials said some local residents had informed the department about a similar change in water colour last year during this period as well. “The colour, however, was not this dense. Although this needs to be verified by scientists, but this is most likely due to algal growth. During late summer season when water levels reduce and there is high salinity, an algal bloom results in such changes in colour,” said Nitin Kakodkar, principal chief conservator of forest (wildlife), Maharashtra.

In Talawe’s case, researchers and microbiologists had attributed the change in colour to vigorous growth of algae or bacteria (halobacteria) growing in an extremely high saline environment having beta-Carotene, which gives this type of characteristic colouration to the water.

“The uniqueness of this lake is that it is alkaline as well as saline at the same time, and the water level parameters change as we move from one end to the other making it a complex ecosystem home to large biodiversity,” said Kakodkar.

Located 500km from Mumbai and over 90km from Buldhana city, the oval-shaped Lonar Lake is a part of the 383-hectare Lonar Wildlife Sanctuary declared on June 8, 2000 as part of the Deccan plateau.

The 113-hectare Lonar lake, also known as Lonar Crater, in Buldhana district of Maharashtra, was created by an asteroid collision with earth impact during the Pleistocene Epoch some 50,000 years ago.

In April, a US Commission had questioned religious freedom in India. A string of strong verbal rebuttals followed. However, India has now given its stern response.

No visas will be issued to the teams of the United States Commission on international religious freedom.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar announced the decision in a letter to a member of parliament.

BJP MP Nishikant Dubey had raised objections made by the US Commission. The commission had advised the US government to designate India as a country of particular concern.

It was the first time since 2004 that the commission made such a recommendation. It said religious freedom in India had seen a drastic turn downward.

The report cited the controversies around the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), which led to Delhi riots in February. It even mentioned the scrapping of special status of Jammu and Kashmir.

The commission said religious minorities are under assault in India. It ranked India along with Pakistan, North Korea, China and Saudi Arabia.

The External Affairs minister has once again hit out at the commission.

In the letter, he said, "We do not see the locus standi of a foreign entity like UNCIRF to pronounce on the state of Indian citizen's constitutionally protected rights."

Jaishankar assured the member of parliament that his ministry will not accept any such external interference or pronouncements.

Since the release of the report, India has maintained that the commission was driven by its prejudices and biases, and has no locus standi whatsoever.

But India has not responded to the comments made by top official in the Trump administration.

Samuel Brownback, the ambassador at large for international religious freedom said, "The US is concerned about what's happening in India in terms of religious freedom."

The comments came hours after US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo released the international religious freedom report for 2019.

"Fulfilling the last wish of a person with few days left. Happy to unite a cancer patient with her mother in Trichy," the Indian mission tweeted along with a picture of the patient and her family. The spread of coronavirus has halted international travel. India has launched the Vande Bharat Mission to bring back its citizens stranded in various nations. Vistara will operate two repatriation flights - one each on June 14 and June 15- on the Singapore-Delhi-Amritsar route under the Vande Bharat Mission to bring back stranded Indians, the airline said on Thursday. Singapore today reported 422 new coronavirus cases, majority of them foreign workers living in dormitories, taking the total number of infections in the city-state to 39,387.

The Tamil Nadu government is open to reconsidering few of the 1018 new names that were released as a part of a list to rename the districts and towns based on Tamil phonetics. K Pandirajan, Minister for Tamil Official Language and Tamil Culture, told WION that the government has received a few requests pertaining to some names and that they would be considered.

“We have not recreated a new name; we have only modified the existing ones as per Tamil phonetics. We have only changed the English version of the name. From the Central committee, we received a list of 3,500 names that had to be modified and we cut it down to 1018. In our state, many of the existing names are British legacies and are in English. In certain cases(as seen in the notification), the central committee has approved the names suggested by the district collectors and in certain cases they have suggested new ones,” he said.

There has been widespread discussion on social media that existing districts and places would get new names -- Coimbatore to Koyampuththoor, Tuticorin to Thooththukkudi, Vellore to Veeloor etc. On Wednesday, a complete notification pertaining to the renaming was circulated.

While social media users have had a field day, thanks to the new, rather unusual spellings, many scholars and historians have partially welcomed the renaming move.

Author and Historian V Sriram said that this is good move and that the names must reflect what is correct as per the Tamil language, as colonially the names have been subjected to a lot of corruption. However, he also pointed out the need for consistency in renaming and looking at the historical correctness.

“This is a good move, but its implementation could have been better. As per the new names, two words with same pronunciation are spelt differently. Also we must look at the historically correct names if we are trying to set history right. Mylapore, historically speaking is only Mylai, but the new name is Mayilappoor. However, I’m quite happy that they are trying Tamil names. For places in France or England, they have a different pronunciation(from what is written), but we learn to pronounce those names” V Sriram told WION.

Some social media users say that the move is an attempt to appease the Tamil population ahead of the 2021 Assembly elections.

Pointing out that name changing is nothing new, veteran journalist and Tamil scholar S Sampath Kumar said that it looks cosmetic and cannot be projected during the polls. He added that it won’t attract much attention as it is not a livelihood issue that concerns the people. Stating the examples of how Calcutta become Kolkata, he said renaming has been quite normal.

“Chennai was being used in Tamil media much before the new name replaced Madras. Virudhupatti, as it was called earlier was renamed Virudhunagar. Now, its not just English that is being replaced, but also Sanskrit. Srivaikundam and Srirangam will henceforth be called Thiruvaikundam and Thiruvarangam respectively. But in due course of time, the new names will also be gradually accepted”, he told WION.

While the names of over 1000 smaller towns and districts are being reverted to their Tamil form, some have raised questions about the very names(current) of the state and its capital city.

Political Analyst Dr Sumanth C Raman said that the timing of the announcement was not very apt as it has come in the middle of the pandemic. Tamil Nadu is facing a tough time with over 38,000 total Covid-19 cases, of which over 27,000 are in Chennai.

“We should ensure that that new names are easy, not very long and convenient to write down. Going by the pattern of phonetic renaming, why not call the state Thamizh Nadu? Many also point out that the capital city’s name(Chennai) isn’t a pure Tamil word,” he told WION.

India overtakes UK's tally becomes 4th worst-hit nation by coronavirus

India's total number of coronavirus cases has jumped to 290,481, and death toll to 8,143, in the country's biggest-ever spike in the number of cases and deaths in a single day.

There is no community transmission of Covid-19 at the national level, while the lockdown measures helped in controlling the spread of the deadly virus until now, Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) Director-General Balram Bhargava said on Thursday.

Addressing a press conference, Health Ministry Joint Secretary Lav Agarwal said that the recovery rate in the country is 49.21%. he said the number of patients recovered at present exceeds the number of active patients in the country.

“We found that about 0.73% of the population in these 15 districts showed a prevalence of past exposure to infection. It means that lockdown measures were successful in keeping it low and preventing rapid spread,” Balram Bhargava, DG, ICMR, said in the press meet.

“There is a heightened debate on community transmission. WHO has not given definition on it. India is such a large country and the prevalence is so low. The prevalence is less than one per cent in small districts. It is slightly higher in urban areas. In the containment areas, it may be slightly higher. But, we are definite that India is not in community transmission,” Bhargava said at the daily press briefing.
