A day after Pakistan claimed that India fired at UN Vehicles at Line of Control (LoC), New Delhi has conveyed its finds to Islamabad and asked it to "responsibly investigate" lapses on its side.

In the aftermath of Pakistan's allegations, New Delhi has investigated the incident and found the allegations "incorrect and false" and in a strongly worded response, the minister of external affairs said, "Instead of repeating baseless and fabricated allegations against India to cover up its own failure in ensuring the safety and security of UN personnel in territory under its control, Pakistan should responsibly investigate its lapses."

WION In Focus: Some stories related to coronavirus pandemic

Flight crew members who are asymptomatic but test positive for COVID-19 need to undergo home isolation for 10 days and once it is over, they can be declared fit for flying again by their medical supervisor, according to aviation regulator DGCA.

If COVID-positive crew members have 'mild symptoms', they will "continue home isolation and will stand discharged after 10 days of symptom onset and no fever for three days", the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) said in a circular, adding there is no need for "testing after the home isolation period is over".

However, if the isolation period for mildly symptomatic crew members is more than 14 days, they have to be examined by DGCA empanelled Class-1 examiner and crew is fit to fly if the examiner declares so, stated the circular that has been accessed by PTI.

The circular dated December 18, 2020, stated that COVID-positive flight crew members who are moderately and severely symptomatic need to undergo special medical examination -- after their complete clinical recovery -- at one of the Indian Air Force boarding centres to get the "cure certificate".

"Once declared 'fit for flying' at the IAF boarding centre, the air crew can commence flying only after DGCA medical assessment is issued," the circular added.

The regulator said the December 18 circular supersedes the June 22 circular which mentioned that only those cabin crew members who come in direct contact with a COVID-positive person onboard a flight will be sent for mandatory 14-day home quarantine.

The June 22 circular superseded a March 23 circular of the DGCA that had made it mandatory for the airlines to put the entire crew of a flight under home quarantine for 14 days in case anyone aboard was found to be COVID-positive.

India surged past 10 million coronavirus cases on Saturday -- the second highest in the world although new infection rates appear to have fallen sharply in recent weeks.

The number of cases increased by just over 25,000 in 24 hours, according to the health ministry, while the total number of deaths from the virus in India now stands at 145,136.

The 10-million mark came as the world's second-most populous nation gears up for the colossal and challenging task of starting to vaccinate the population next year.

The government aims to inoculate 300 million people initially, with health workers and other frontline staff expected first in line.

India has yet to approve any vaccines but several drugmakers have applied for authorisation, including AstraZeneca, which has partnered with India's Serum Institute, the world's largest vaccine maker.

India has lifted restrictions on most activities to boost the struggling economy, although some states and territories have reimposed curbs.

Health ministry officials were expected to meet the Election Commission -- which carries out vast state and national polls -- as they map out how to distribute the shots, the Press Trust of India reported Thursday.

Experts have cautioned that the country could struggle because of its weak cold-chain infrastructure -- needed for keeping vaccines refrigerated -- particularly in poor and densely populated urban areas and remote rural regions.

The United States, with a population a quarter the size of India's, has been reporting upwards of 200,000 new cases daily in recent weeks, 10 times as many as India.

India's fatality rate is also considerably lower -- less than half that of the US.

In a major setback to former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Saturday attached several of his properties worth Rs 11.86 crore in connection with its probe into the J&K Cricket Association (JKCA) case, officials said.

An ED official told IANS, "We have attached properties of Farooq Abdullah, including three residential buildings and two plots."

He said the properties of the National Conference (NC) leader have been attached under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

Among the attached properties are residences at Gupkar Road in Srinagar; Tehsil Katipora, Tanmarg; and Bhatindi Village, Sunjwan Jammu, the official said.

He further said that during investigation, it was revealed that from 2005-06 to December 2011, JKCA received Rs 109.78 crore from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

"Between 2006 and January 2012, Farooq Abdullah was the chairman of JKCA and he misused his position and clout to make illegal appointments of office-bearers at JKCA to whom he gave financial powers for the purpose of laundering of JKCA funds," the official said.

"Investigations further revealed that Farooq Abdullah was instrumental as well as beneficiary of the laundered funds of the JKCA. Despite the existing bank account of JKCA, six bank accounts were opened for parking of JKCA funds," the official said.

He further said that one dormant bank account in the name of Kashmir wing of JKCA was also made operational for the same purpose.

"Investigation has found that JKCA funds worth Rs 45 crore was siphoned, which includes huge cash withdrawl to the tune of Rs 25 crore, with no corresponding justification," the official said.

He further said that for the purpose of generation of the proceeds of crime, funds were layered by a way of complex interbank transfers in all the bank accounts of JKCA and also by transfer to several personal bank accounts, followed by sbiponing of funds.

The ED has questioned Farooq Abdullah twice in connection with a case of alleged misappropriation of funds when he was the chairman of the JKCA.

The ED case is based on an FIR filed by the CBI, which booked former JKCA office-bearers, including general secretary Mohammed Saleem Khan and former treasurer Ahsan Ahmad Mirza.

The CBI later filed a chargesheet against Farooq Abdullah, Khan, Mirza as well as Mir Manzoor Gazanffer Ali, Bashir Ahmad Misgar and Gulzar Ahmad Beigh (former accountant of JKCA) for "misappropriation of JKCA funds amounting to Rs 43.69 crore" from the grants given by the BCCI to promote the sport in the state between 2002 and 2011.

The reports emerging from Pakistan regarding attacks on UN vehicles by Indian troops along the Line of Control are completely false, baseless and factually incorrect, official sources have said.

India dismisses Pakistan’s claim of army targetting UN vehicle along LoC

In what is a clear indication of grudging acceptance, the ruling Chinese Communist Party via its mouthpiece Global Times has accepted that India has "unique geographical advantages" in the Indian ocean.

In an article on 17 December titled “India changes attitude toward multilateral mechanisms for global ambition”, Hu Shisheng who is a director of the Institute for South Asian Studies at the China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations pointed out, "India has also taken the lead in planning small-scale multilateral cooperation mechanisms in the Indian Ocean”

Increasingly, under the groupings of IORA or Indian ocean Rim Association to the Indo-Pacific construct, New Delhi has been able to leverage the advantage with more and more countries joining Indian led initiatives. In fact, with Indo-Pacific construct, India is connecting the Indian and Pacific oceans from the east coast of Africa to the west coast of the Americas, and as External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar said,"Indo-Pacific is not tomorrow’s forecast but yesterday’s reality."

And clearly, in the last few years, India has expanded its role in the Indian Ocean region (IOR), from humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) to supplying food and medical aid amidst the COVID pandemic to 5 countries of the Indian Ocean namely: Maldives, Mauritius, Madagascar, Comoros, and Seychelles.

And in a Deja Vu, the Chinese communist party's indignation via its mouth-piece about India’s ‘Sinophobic, pro-West’ diplomacy comes as no surprise. While Beijing sees India drifting away, it forgets how it opposed New Delhi's bid for Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) or the UN Security Council. 2020 saw an increasingly aggressive China, which not only violated agreements on buildups at the Line of Actual control but also indulged in actions such as those in Galwan which saw 20 Indian soldiers attaining martyrdom.

Beijing is already perturbed by Quad meetings and Australia being invited to Malabar exercises and the country perhaps failed to understand or recall the outreach by New Delhi in form of informal summits--in Wuhan and then the Chennai connect. But past is past, as the world woke up to a new China, an aggressive one amidst the COVID pandemic.

Under its defense training programmes, India has provided Mobile training teams to 11 countries from Vietnam to South Africa, as well as Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Myanmar.

China tacitly accepts India's supremacy in Indian Ocean

Zimbabwe's envoy to India has backed New Delhi's place at the United Nations Security Council highlighting the progress role played by the country at other international forums and reforming the "skewed" global governance system.

In response to a WION question at the virtual event of Confederation of Young Leaders (CYL), Zimbabwe's envoy to India Dr. G. M. Chipare said, "You are aware that the current global governance structure is a skewed one..it was put in place more than 60 years ago. I don't think it is fit for the purpose now and India is a front candidate for the post in the United Nation Security Council as a permanent member."

He added, "let's look at the progressive role India has played in the non-aligned movement, united nations conference on trade and development...we think India will play a positive role...in peace and stability at the international level."

Zimbabwe's envoy highlighting how the current UNSC structure is "archaic and tailor-made for a world that doesn't exist" and "India with a formidable economy and population of 1.3 billion cannot be marginalized and we think they deserve a place at the high table. Zimbabwe supports India's efforts to be part of that structure, the permanent member of the Security Council."

India will be at the Security Council from January 1 for a period of two years as a non-permanent member. Its key focus will be on UN reforms, something which Indian PM Modi highlighted during the United Nations General Assembly speech earlier this year.

The ambassador called for an African seat at the high table which currently has 5 permanent members from North America and the Eurasian continent. The UN Security Council has 15 members, 5 permanent, and 10 non-permanent which get the seat for two years.

He said, "African continent with 55 member states deserves a seat at the high level and I am aware that consultations between African representatives at the UN and India, my good friend Amb Tirumurti of India recently had a meeting with ambassador/permanent representative of Zimbabwe to share perspectives on how they will approach issues of common perspective at the UN."

India has backed its support for the Common African Position on the UN reforms as specified in the Ezulwini Consensus and Sirte Declaration. Ezulwini Consensus and Sirte Declaration, both call for at least 2 permanent and 5 to 2 non-permanent UNSC seats to be given to African countries at the high table.

Asked about ties with China, the Envoy said, "I am the ambassador to India, I am constrained to comment on third party relations."

Explaining further he said, "you are aware that historically, we had good relations with China....But its not a juxtaposition of China and India because India equally played a positive role in our struggle for Independence and as Zimbabwe's envoy to India my brief is to make sure, that India and Zimbabwe become a friend."

New Delhi, Dec 19 (IANSlife) In the journey of an eventful and fulfilling life, `less is more` sometimes goes beyond the fundamental idea of decluttering a private realm like your home. It becomes about details that reflect the evolution of your personality, and precious values that have stood the test of time.

The Pure Concept launched its flagship store in Kala Ghoda, Mumbai as a haven of understated sophistication and innovative product design. The new store will also feature a space for free-flowing discussions on concept building and ideation for bespoke home design projects between co-founder Chanya and patrons at the Designer`s Table.
The new store is situated amidst Mumbai`s well-loved symbols of timeless heritage and iconicism, in a vibrant art district that is hard to miss, and easy to love. It overlooks the Prince of Wales Museum, and near the Jehangir Art Gallery, at Kala Ghoda`s Ador House.
The building - more than a 100 years old - is admired for its Indo-Saracenic architecture with a touch of Art Deco. The amalgamation of cross-cultural influences in the construction of Ador House makes an ideal match with the cosmopolitan essence of The Pure Concept Home retail space, spread across 3,600 sq. ft. and two floors connected by a spiral staircase.
In a harmonious symphony of functionality and aesthetics, the layout of the store is defined by the use of subtle and ambient lighting; natural soft furnishings with a strong colour sense; complementary furniture shapes; a seamless concrete floor in white with contrasting sisal texturing; heritage high beam ceilings, and an astutely balanced use of the brand`s signature colour: teal.
There are coordinated hangar displays for soft furnishings, to facilitate a complete appreciation of their nuances with a thorough `tactile therapy` experience. Chanya Kaur and Dalbir Singh who co-founded the brand in 2012, initially launched it as a soft furnishings brand.
A glimpse into the new collections, showcasing major categories:
Blissful Boketto
The Japanese word, pronounced `bo-ke-tto`, implies `gazing into the distance without a thought`. This collection represents soothing tones, and hints of earthiness. With an overarching teal palette, these products speak of the depth of profound thought, with each product playing a different character. Blissful Boketto is about a cool, calm, effortless facade, while still portraying fresh and coordinated minimalism.
Hygge Home
The Danish-inspired lifestyle concept of Hygge (pronounced `hue-gah`) implies a celebration of the self; the cosy, comfortable art of doing nothing, immersed in convivial gratification. This collection promotes a calm and comfortable environment, where one can relax, unwind, and kick back with good food and intimate friends, with the warmth of blankets and candlelights. The products are all about a dreamy, yet modern setup, flaunting soft, neutral and relaxed colours.
Mysa Mood
The Swedish concept of Mysa literally means, `comfort`. It implies cosying up by yourself or with a significant other, thereby engaging in something comfortable and pleasurable. This collection has a minimalistic setup with contrasting colour tones. Each product is about bold and eclectic individualism that holds its own in any design and decor layout.
The Lagom Life
Another Swedish concept, and not too from the Danish `Hygge`, Lagom (pronounced `lah-gom`) signifies balanced perfection, meaning to have, or be just the right amount, just enough. Basis this, this collection is intuitive, grounded, and driven by the idea of alignment.
Price range: Furniture starting from Rs 30,000.
Soft furnishings starting from Rs 2,500 per metre.

Senior officials of the Quad grouping - India, Australia, Japan, and the US met for the second time virtually this year on Friday with focus on COVID-19 vaccine, Indo-Pacific among others.

The first meeting of the group had taken place on September 25 followed by Quad foreign ministers in-person meeting in Japan in October, making the total number of Quad meets this year at three showing an increased engagement.

The minister of external affairs in a release said officials "underscored the importance of enhancing the resilience of supply chains" and highlighted the need to "ensure safe, effective and affordable access to COVID-19 vaccines."

Amid the COVID-19 crisis, a number of COVID plus meetings at the foreign secretary-level took place that saw the participation of countries like New Zealand, South Korea and Japan.

Indo-Pacific was expectedly the top focus area with officials of the grouping reaffirming "their commitment towards a free, open, prosperous and inclusive Indo-Pacific region" based on "shared values and principles and respect for international law especially the UNCLOS."

United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea(UNCLOS) was violated by China in 2016 by not accepting the award of the tribunal constituted under it. The tribunal had dismissed the Chinese claim to a large portion of South China Sea based on its so called "nine dash line".

The read out also said that the grouping of four countries "reiterated their firm support for ASEAN-centrality and ASEAN-led mechanisms" in the regional architecture for the Indo-Pacific, and "their readiness to work with ASEAN and all other countries towards realising a common and promising vision for the Indo-Pacific."

While the MEA release listed areas of cooperation as counter-terrorism, cyber security, maritime security, a new addition was humanitarian and disaster relief something that Indian forces have been able to do amidst the covid pandemic by sending relief to many countries in Africa and the Indian ocean.

China sees the grouping very suspiciously and has been terming it "Asian NATO". The increased engagement of the grouping comes even as Beijing in 2020 tried to increase its territorial ambitions by being aggressive not only with its neighbours but also Quad member countries. In some ways, it has been having either territorial or trade issues with all the Quad member countries.

A ministry of external affairs read out after the 20th round of WMCC said both sided "agreed that the next (9th) round of senior commanders meeting should be held at an early date" so that they can "work towards early and complete disengagement of troops along the LAC" something that New Delhi has been reiterating many times in the over 8 months-long stand-off.

The read out explained: "The two sides agreed that based on the guidance provided by senior leaders and the agreements reached between the two foreign ministers and special representatives, they would continue to work towards ensuring complete disengagement in all friction points along the LAC in the western sector at the earliest."

The talks took place virtually. The Indian side was led by joint secretary (East Asia), Ministry of External Affairs Naveen Srivastava and from the Chinese side, Director General of the Department of Boundary & Oceanic Affairs was present. The last such meet happened on September 30.

Chinese foreign ministry in its statement said both sides, "agreed to earnestly implement" the five-point consensus reached by the foreign minister of both the countries after the meeting in Moscow earlier this year and, "focused on the disengagement of frontline troops" and "take concrete measures to deal with the issues on the ground to further deescalate the border situation."

The Chinese side also called for holding the "9th round of Senior commanders meeting as soon as possible".

The next focus will be on the military round of talks. The last round of military talks occurred on November 6 and since then the stalemate continues as forces from both sides remained stationed at the Line of Actual Control(LAC) in eastern Ladakh.

2020 saw an aggressive China which not only violated the understanding and agreements with India on build-up but also indulged in action in Galwan Valley that killed 20 Indian soldiers in June.
