Australian fashion icon Carla Zampatti, known for elegant designs and efforts to empower women over more than half a century, has died aged 78 after a fall in Sydney, her family said on Saturday.

Actors Nicole Kidman and Cate Blanchett, as well as former prime minister Julia Gillard, were among the influential Australians who wore the clothes of Zampatti, hospitalised last week after a fall at an outdoor opera performance.

"She continued to thrive as a businesswoman through enormous radical and social change, designing clothes for women fighting for liberation through the women`s rights movement in the 1960s to empowering women today," the family said in a statement.

In the early 1970s Zampatti became one of the first designers to introduce swimwear into her collections in then socially conservative Australia.

Born in Italy in 1942, before her family emigrated to Australia in 1950, Zampatti produced her first small fashion collection in 1965 before setting up Carla Zampatti Pty Ltd five years later.

"It is amazing what you can do with an incredible amount of youthful optimism and very little money," Zampatti told the Australian Associated Press in 2009.

A savvy businesswoman who opened dozens of boutiques across Australia, Zampatti held several directorships, and served as chairwoman of Australian public service broadcaster the Special Broadcasting Service.

"We have lost a truly great and inspirational Australian," Prime Minister Scott Morrison said in a statement, adding that Zampatti was not only a fashion industry icon but a pioneer as an entrepreneur and a champion of a multicultural approach.

"Her contribution to our nation will be timeless, just like her designs."

On Zampatti`s online memorial page, a customer who identified herself only as Louise wrote, "It is true of every piece I wear from the CZ line-I feel confident, elegant and empowered....Thank you for the years of inspiration."

Zampatti was the mother of three children from two marriages and a grandmother of nine, her family said.

The Italian luxury brand issued an apology after content from a recently released campaign starring model Mitsuki Kimura (known widely as Koki) received criticism on Japanese social media platforms.

In the ad Kimura poses in heels on a piece of fabric that for many users resembled an obi, or kimono sash, that was laid on the ground. Online, commentators decried the placement of the sash as a symbol of traditional Japanese culture and the fact that it was “stomped on” by a model in shoes; some deemed the visual blasphemous.

“The fabric resembles the Japanese traditional obi and Maison Valentino deeply apologises for any offence caused,” a spokesperson said, emphasising the brand’s commitment to “nurturing a culture of equality and inclusion on a global scale.”

The spokesperson added that the campaign, which also features Korean actress Son Ye-jin and Chinese actress Guan Xiaotong, seeks to highlight a connection between global communities and cultures.

The images, part of a promotional shoot for the Milan-headquartered company’s Japan spring/summer 2021 collection ‘Valentino Collezione Milano for Women’, show Koki sitting on an obi, which is traditionally made of the same material as a kimono and worn as a broad sash around the waist.

Love to binge on potato chips, bread, bakery products and chocolate? Then beware, as a new rodent-based study revealed that eating processed foods can cause leaky gut syndrome, which in turn increases the risk of kidney disease.

The study, led by researchers at Monash University in Australia, showed that heat-treated or processed foods are rich in harmful chemical compounds called Advanced Glycation End Products (AGEs). These chemicals give the browned, roasted, fried, grilled and baked foods their flavour and aroma.

The AGEs trigger a process called the Maillard reaction and switch on the body`s danger signals leading to an inflammatory response and chronic kidney disease.

However, eating foods that contain high resistant starch fibre such as oats, cooked and cooled rice, barley, bean and legumes such as black beans and peas, raw potato starch (as a supplement), cooked and cooled potatoes, can help restore gut health and improve kidney health, revealed the study published in the journal Science Advances.

"These foods are important as they get down into your lower gut and basically serve as food for your gut bacteria. The gut bacteria ferment these food-producing metabolites that are anti-inflammatory," said lead author Melinda Coughlan, Associate Professor at Monash Central Clinical School`s Department of Diabetes.

Globally, 10 per cent people are affected with chronic kidney disease. Consumption of processed food is also associated with the risk of all-cause mortality, diabetes, hypertension, obesity, cancer and gastrointestinal diseases.

"Dietary change, as with most behaviour change, can be difficult to maintain long term, but by adding more foods high in resistant starch fibre and steaming and stewing cooking practices we can help dampen the harmful effects," Coughlan said.

In a working-class neighbourhood of Rome, crowds gather in front of a pastry shop window to see sumptuous Easter eggs turned into works of art.

Laid out like brightly coloured pieces of jewellery, each of Walter Musco's chocolate eggs is created as a tribute to a particular artist.

One is adorned with two people holding up a heart, after US pop artist Keith Haring, while another is crafted all in yellow with slashes reminiscent of Argentine-Italian painter Lucio Fontana.

"It's a simple idea -- I'm really passionate about art and I expanded my field to include literature, music and cinema," Musco told AFP.

The 47-year-old Roman, wearing an impeccable white chef's uniform, has been making these kind of eggs for a decade and has now put a selection on show ahead of the Easter weekend.

The eggs on display are the "ones that have pleased me the most", and include one decked with a dove like the bird in Robert Mapplethorpe's famous photo of Patti Smith, and a red dressed egg inspired by fashion designer Azzedine Alaia.

Each of these eggs will set you back between 150 and 400 euros, depending on how long they take to make.

But you don't have to eat them, and if looked after, they can last for years.

"The main thing is to keep them out of the heat, so not next to a chimney or a radiator, or near a window exposed to the sun. There's no problem up to about 26 or 27 degrees celsius," Musco said.

- Self-taught -
The eggs on display are all for sale, excepting a few which are part of private collections of clients. But customers must buy them in person due to the risk of damage if sent by post.

Musco uses a 55 percent dark chocolate from France for his eggs, making shells that he puts together before adding the decorations -- all of them edible.

In his laboratory in the basement of the pastry shop in the Tor Marancia district in southern Rome, he is keen to show off his skills.

Armed with a warm knife, he carves designs into the chocolate with the concentration of a surgeon.

"I am self-taught. I had an art gallery years ago, I mainly sold African, South-East Asian, Oceanic and Australian Aboriginal art," he said.

"Then I developed this passion for another form of more Eurocentric art," he added, smiling.

When choosing his inspirations, he looks at "everything that is abstract and not obvious to understand, but has a big emotional impact".

In the future, he wants to keep making his eggs but in direct collaboration with artists, "a way to exchange opinions and ideas, and thus evolve!".

How do you like your eggs? Rome chef's elegant answer for Easter

Among the various revelations made by Meghan Markle and Prince Harry during their interview with Oprah Winfrey earlier in March, the couple revealed they had secretly gotten married three days before their official ceremony in 2018.

Now, weeks later the Archbishop of Canterbury has denied the news and said that no such secret wedding took place.

During her interview with Oprah, Meghan said she and Prince Harry had a secret marriage ceremony officiated by Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby in their "backyard".

The duchess said nobody knew the couple shared personal vows for "just the two of us". The wedding reportedly took place before the grand ceremony that took place at Windsor on Saturday, May 19, 2018.

Now, speaking to an Italian media outlet, Welby stated that the legal wedding happened on a Saturday and added, "But I won't say what happened at any other meetings."
"If any of you ever talk to a priest, you expect them to keep that talk confidential," he added.

"It doesn't matter who I'm talking to. I had a number of private and pastoral meetings with the Duke and Duchess before the wedding.

Welby insisted that the legal wedding took place on Saturday, May 19 and said, "I signed the wedding certificate, which is a legal document, and I would have committed a serious criminal offence if I signed it knowing it was false."

During her interview with Oprah, Meghan said, "You know, three days before our wedding we got married. No-one knows that, but we called the Archbishop and we just said, 'look, this thing, this spectacle, is for the world, but we want our union between us'."

She said the vows they had framed are "just the two of us in our backyard with the Archbishop of Canterbury".

Both Harry and Meghan said it was "just the three of us".

Welby's comments come after the official who issued the licence for the couple's wedding said Meghan was 'clearly misinformed'.

Stephen Borton, the former chief clerk at the Faculty Office, told The Sun that Meghan "is obviously confused and clearly misinformed".

"They did not marry three days earlier in front of the Archbishop of Canterbury," he said.

"The Special Licence I helped draw up enabled them to marry at St George's Chapel in Windsor and what happened there on 19 May 2018 and was seen by millions around the world was the official wedding as recognised by the Church of England and the law.

"What I suspect they did was exchange some simple vows they had perhaps written themselves, and which is fashionable, and said that in front of the Archbishop or, and more likely, it was a simple rehearsal."

Along with Borton's comments, the news daily had also carried a copy of an entry marriage document for the couple which was dated May 19, 2018, and was signed by Prince Charles and Meghan's mother Doria Ragland as witnesses.

The Sussexes are gearing up to welcome their second child- a daughter- this summer. Reports state that Meghan has opted for a home birth for her second child. The couple lives in California along with their two-year-old son Archie.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry did not have a secret wedding, says the Archbishop of Canterbury

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are planning to welcome their second child at home.

Several media reports suggest that the Sussexes are planning a home birth for their second child- a baby girl. The couple is parents to two-year-old boy Archie. This will be the first-ever British royal to be born in America.

The 39-year-old Duchess of Sussex and Prince Harry bought their $14.5 million Montecito estate last year after moving to California.

During the couple's bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey, the gender of the baby was revealed and during the interview, Harry and Meghan detailed their reasons for leaving royal life behind.

Harry said, "A girl, you know, what more can you ask for? But now, you know, now we`ve got our family. We`ve got, you know, the four of us and our two dogs, and it`s great."

During the tell-all interview, the two made several serious allegations against the royal family and the Institution at large, including accusations of racism and turning a blind eye to Markle`s mental health needs.

They also discussed the media`s presence in their life, reporting on their every move and the criticism of Markle`s actions, which led to, in part, her suicidal thoughts.

Markle confessed she had no clue what her royal marriage would bring into her life, saying, "There was no way to understand what the day-to-day was going to be like."

"That`s what was really tricky over those past few years, is when the perception and the reality are two very different things. And you`re being judged on the perception, but you`re living the reality of it," she added.

The couple moved to America in early 2020 after quitting their roles as senior members of the British royal family. They announced their second pregnancy earlier this year on Valentine's Day.

We`ve got, you know, the four of us and our two dogs, and it`s great." During the tell-all interview, the two made several serious allegations against the royal family and the Institution at large, including accusations of racism and turning a blind eye to Markle`s mental health needs. They also discussed the media`s presence in their life, reporting on their every move and the criticism of Markle`s actions, which led to, in part, her suicidal thoughts. Markle confessed she had no clue what her royal marriage would bring into her life, saying, "There was no way to understand what the day-to-day was going to be like." "That`s what was really tricky over those past few years, is when the perception and the reality are two very different things. And you`re being judged on the perception, but you`re living the reality of it," she added. The couple moved to America in early 2020 after quitting their roles as senior members of the British royal family. They announced their second pregnancy earlier this year on Valentine's Day.

Publisher Scholastic Corp has halted publication of a book by children`s author Dav Pilkey, best known for his "Captain Underpants" series, who offered an online apology for the title`s unintended "racist imagery."

Pilkey, the author of more than 40 books, said 'The Adventures of Ook and Gluk: Kung-Fu Cavemen from the Future,' first published in 2010, would be pulled from retail and library shelves.

"I hope you, my readers, will forgive me and learn from my mistakes that even unintentional and passive stereotypes and racism is harmful to everyone," said Pilkey, 55, in a statement on YouTube on March 26.

The graphic novel about a group of friends who save the world using kung fu actually was "intended to showcase diversity, equality and non-violent conflict resolution" but it ultimately backfired, he said.

"It was brought to my attention that this book also contains harmful racial stereotypes and passively racist imagery," Pilkey said. "It was and is wrong and harmful to my Asian readers, friends, and family, and to all Asian people."

The move came during national soul-searching over anti-Asian harassment and violence that followed the killing of eight people, including six Asian women, at Atlanta-area day spas.

The decision to pull the book followed the removal this month of a handful of titles written decades ago by Dr Seuss. The books were found to contain racist and insensitive imagery.

With Pilkey`s 'full support,' Scholastic said it halted publication on March 22, removed the book from its websites, stopped fulfilment of any outstanding orders and sought a return of all inventory, including from schools and libraries.

"Together, we recognize that this book perpetuates passive racism," Scholastic said in a statement. "We are deeply sorry for this serious mistake."

Pilkey has said that his own disruptive behaviour as a child led him to create his own comic books. He later achieved international recognition with his "Captain Underpants" series, which was adapted as a film.

The 'Captain Underpants' books are among the American Library Association`s list of the top 100 most banned and challenged books from the past decade, due to complaints from parents about violent imagery.

Known as the festivals of colours, Holi is known for its delicacies as much as for the celebration. As most of us get into the last leg of the festive planning, let us not compromise on the quality of food that we bring home, cook with or offer others.

This Holi, it doesn't matter if you are planning to make those sumptuous gujiyas at home or are thinking to buy sweets from the nearest store; what does matter is to ensure that the raw material or the finished delicacy is pure pleasure without any trace of adulteration. For those who think that spotting adulteration is nothing short of rocket science, we bring to you some simple points listed out by the national food standards watchdog Food Safety and Standards Association of India (FSSAI) on how to spot adulteration in the commonest of ingredients, take a look!

Khoya, chenna and paneer
Boil the sample in water and add let it cool. Add two-three drops of tincture of iodine, if the sample turns blue in colour it is adulterated with starch.

Honey
One of the most commonly found adulterants in a jar of honey is sugar; in case you want to test the authenticity and the purity of your honey, follow the following:

Take a transparent glass and fill it with water and drop a spoonful of honey into it. Pure honey will not disperse, if it does, it contains sugar.

Sugar, pithi sugar, jaggery

It is easy to detect if the sugar or jaggery is adulterated with chalk powder. In a transparent glass pour water and dissolve sugar/jaggery sample, the adulterant matter will begin to settle down at the bottom.

Sweet curd

Add 10 drops of hydrochloric acid in one teaspoon of curd, mix well. If the mixture turns red, it indicates the presence of vanaspati in the curd.

Milk

Add ½ teaspoon of soybean or arhar powder to a teaspoon of milk, mix well and leave for 5 minutes. Dip a red litmus paper in it, remove after 30 seconds. If the litmus paper turns to blue it is indicative of the presence of urea in the milk sample.

Undeniably, food is intrinsic to life, something that no celebration or festivity can ever be devoid of. We bet you must be ready with jars full of snacks and traditional goodies like papads, gujjiyas and other delectable treats. This Holi, pay a little attention to what you bring home and serve at the table.

Choose health, choose happiness! Happy Holi!

Holi 2021: Tips to spot food adulteration at home

The findings of a new study by Anglia Ruskin University (ARU) suggest that women who suffer from vision, hearing, or dual sensory loss are more than twice as likely to report depression and anxiety compared to men who experience the same issues.

The research, which has been published in the International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry, looked at survey data from more than 23,000 adults, where participants had self-reported whether they had suffered depression or anxiety, and also whether they experienced a vision, hearing, or dual (both vision and hearing) sensory impairment.

Across the whole sample, the prevalence of depression and anxiety was between 2 and 2.56 higher in women compared to men.

Women with dual sensory impairment were almost three and a half times more likely to report depression or anxiety than those who did not have any impairments, while men with dual sensory impairment were more than two and a half times more likely to experience depression, and almost twice as likely to report anxiety than those with no impairment.

Lead author Professor Shahina Pardhan, Director of the Vision and Eye Research Institute at ARU said: "Our study found that while sensory loss, particularly both vision and hearing loss, results in a higher number of the population reporting depression and anxiety, the association is particularly strong in women."This highlights the importance of interventions to address vision and hearing loss, especially in women. Some sensory loss is preventable or treatable, and clearly, these issues are taking their toll not just on physical health, but mental health too."

The most vibrant and colourful time of the year is finally here. A festive mood fills the air as people across the country get set for Holi celebrations. Enjoyed with water and gulaal (colour), the festival of colours adds dollops of fun in our otherwise mundane routine.

But the fun must be tempered with caution because synthetic colours contain harmful chemicals that penetrate deep within your skin and hair. Toxic colours can seriously harm them. Therefore be careful with such colours.

IANSlife speaks to experts to help you protect your skin and hair before the riot of colours sets in.

Experts at Urban Company share pre-Holi haircare guide:

Step 1

Get rid of the split ends: Often used during Rangwali Holi, synthetic colours are known for their drying effect. With split ends, your hair becomes excessively prone to dryness, leading to further damage. To maintain the quality of your hair, it`s best to get rid of split ends right before the festivities.

Step 2

Wash your hair: One may wonder -- how does washing hair even before getting dirty make sense? Yet, it does! Cleansing your scalp properly before giving it a protective shield to deal with harsh chemicals is the right approach to pre-Holi haircare. Wash your hair properly and make sure you condition it as well, the night before Holi. For better results, you can even apply a leave-in conditioner before playing Holi.

Step 3

Oil Massage: Ensure your hair is deeply oiled before stepping outside the house to play with colours. It prevents the colours from penetrating the hair shaft and in minimising hair breakage when you wash your hair later. You can use any basic oil (coconut, olive or mustard) and massage your scalp thoroughly to form a protective layer on your hair.

Step 4

Cover your hair: Never step outside during Holi without covering your head. After the oiling process is done, cover your hair with a cap, scarf or even a bandana. Also, open hair is a big no! It soaks all the colours, which are harmful to the scalp. Tie your hair into a ponytail or make a bun.

Post-Holi haircare

Step 1

Comb your hair: After playing with colours for hours together, don`t rush to wash your hair. Comb it first. Combing and brushing hair before washing allows you to get rid of dry colours, making it easier to clean later. Of course, this works only for dry colours.

Step 2

Head Wash: Washing your hair is a must after indulging in an hours-long water barrage of colours. Begin by rinsing your hair with plain water, then apply a mild organic shampoo to wash off the colours from the scalp. Do not massage your scalp harshly to get rid of all the colours in the first wash. Else you will end up with a headache afterwards. Instead, use your fingertips to gently massage your scalp, making small circular movements, which will help you get rid of the colours and also leave you feeling relaxed after the shower. Moreover, be certain to use a deep conditioner after shampooing and rinse it well. You can also apply a hair serum, as soon as your hair dries.

Step 3

Hair Mask: The post-Holi haircare routine is all about pampering your hair with extra love and care. Use a good hair mask after two to three days. This will nourish your hair, helping it recover from the damage caused by harsh chemicals in the colours. Prepared with ingredients such as lemon, eggs, yoghurt and amla, a hair mask is most helpful in giving your tresses a fresh bounce.

Step 4

Hair Spa: Colours often damage the hair, making them harsh and increasing hair fall. A good hair spa should be mandatory after Holi. Depending on your hair type, get a customised hair spa treatment to restore lost moisture and make your tresses frizz-free and manageable. A hair spa is an ideal 360-degree cure for all your post-Holi hair woes.

Pre-Holi skincare guide by Himanshu Gandhi, CEO and Co- Founder, Mother Sparsh

Step 1

Wash your face with a hydrating face wash: No soap, but face wash is the right product here. Soaps tend to steal the moisture from your skin, and application of any cream oil afterwards is quickly absorbed by the skin, leaving no protective layer outside. Using all-natural face wash is the key. They leave behind super hydrated skin. Use of ingredients, such as CinnamomumTamala (Tejpatra oil), Earth Marine Water, mint, Decyl glucoside, Aqua and Glycerin, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Glyceryl Laurate, (natural) Vanilla Oil and more are preferred for skin nourishment.

Step 2

Tone well before applying a deep-nourishing moisturiser: Face toning is a clutch part of this routine to ensure an optimum moisture level in the skin. It is recommended to use natural products such as creme or oils such as Argan oil for protection. It can help create a strong foundation for creams to build a strong protection layer.

Step 3

Covering under-eye skin: Protect the thin skin around the eye with a top-rated Plant Powered (natural) Under Eye Recovery Gel.

Step 4

Lip balm for lip protection: The most ignored part on our face in any beauty routine are the lips. The ill-effect of harmful colours can damage the sensitive skin of your lips. You can use any plant-based lip balm made with natural ingredients such as rose, calendula, ginger lemon and more.

Post-Holi skincare tips

For people on the go, simply slip a packet or two of Origami`s Wet Wipes into your back pocket, your bag or place in your car -- these easy-to-carry, soft wipes are a blessing in their colourful guises and come in four refreshing fragrances: rose and cologne for those who love a more robust scent, and lemon and aloe vera for subtler and delicate noses.

Experts at Urban Company shares more:

Step 1

Do not use Soaps and Face washes

The chemicals in the colours already play their part in robbing moisture off your skin. Using drugstore soaps and face washes that are largely laced with chemicals can further rip off the natural alkaline level of your skin. Instead, opt for an organic soap or other gentle cleaning products for your skin to restore the skin. One should also refrain from scrubbing their face right after playing with colours. Our skin tends to be excessively sensitive after coming in contact with the chemicals, and it will not be able to handle any more harsh treatments.

Step 2

Use Oil to Remove Colours

Time and again, olive oil has proven beneficial for skin, hair, and provides overall health benefits. The extremely mild nature of olive oil can help get rid of any residual colour on your skin. Pour a few drops of olive oil onto a ball of cotton, and wipe the colours gently off your skin after Holi.

Step 3

Pamper your Skin a little Extra

After all the cleaning to get rid of the colour, it is only if your skin is exhausted at the end of the day. Give it some extra love and care by applying natural face masks and face packs. You can also try using uptans made from easily available ingredients like curd and besan (gram flour), or rose water, sandalwood and turmeric. The healing effect of the natural ingredients will give your skin much-needed comfort after a rough day, and will also help restore the natural balance.

Holi 2021: Tips and tricks to protect your skin and hair

Hadija Haruna-Oelker, a Black journalist, has just produced the German translation of Amanda Gorman’s “The Hill We Climb,” the poem about a “skinny Black girl” that for many people was the highlight of President Joe Biden’s inauguration.

So has Kübra Gümüsay, a German writer of Turkish descent.

As has Uda Strätling, a translator, who is white.

Literary translation is usually a solitary pursuit, but German publisher Hoffmann und Campe went for a team of writers to ensure the translation of Gorman’s poem — just 710 words — wasn’t just true to Gorman’s voice. The trio was also asked to make its political and social significance clear and to avoid anything that might exclude people of color, people with disabilities, women or other marginalized groups.

“It was a gamble,” Strätling said of the collaborative approach.

For nearly two weeks, the team debated word choices, occasionally emailing Gorman for clarifications. But as they worked, an argument was brewing elsewhere in Europe about who has the right to translate the poet’s work.

“This whole debate started,” Gümüsay said, with a sigh.

It began in February when Meulenhoff, a publisher in the Netherlands, said it had asked Marieke Lucas Rijneveld, a writer whose debut novel won last year’s Booker International Prize, to translate Gorman’s poem into Dutch.

Rijneveld was the “ideal candidate,” Meulenhoff said in a statement. But many social media users disagreed, asking why a white writer had been chosen when Gorman’s reading at the inauguration had been a significant cultural moment for Black people.

Three days later, Rijneveld quit. (Rijneveld declined an interview request for this article.)

In March, the debate reignited after Victor Obiols, another white translator, was dropped by the Catalan publisher Univers. Obiols said he was told his profile “was not suitable for the project.” (A Univers spokeswoman declined to comment.)

Literary figures and newspaper columnists across Europe have been arguing for weeks about what these decisions mean, turning Gorman’s poem into the latest flash point in debates about identity politics across the continent. The discussion has shone a light on the often unexamined world of literary translation and its lack of racial diversity.

“I can’t recall a translation controversy ever taking the world by storm like this,” Aaron Robertson, a Black Italian-to-English translator, said in a phone interview.

“This feels something of a watershed moment,” he added.

On Monday, the American Literary Translators Association waded into the furor. “The question of whether identity should be the deciding factor in who is allowed to translate whom is a false framing of the issues at play,” it said in a statement published on its website.

The real problem underlying the controversy was “the scarcity of Black translators,” it added. Last year, the association carried out a diversity survey. Only 2% of the 362 translators who responded were Black, a spokeswoman for the association said in an email.

In a video interview, the members of the German team said they, too, felt the debate had missed the point. “People are asking questions like, ‘Does color give you the right to translate?’” Haruna-Oelker said. “This is not about color.”

She added: “It’s about quality, it’s about the skills you have, and about perspectives.” Each member of the German team brought different things to the group, she said.

The team spent a long time discussing how to translate the word “skinny,” without conjuring images of an overly thin woman, Gümüsay said, and they debated how to bring a sense of the poem’s gender-inclusive language into German, in which many objects — and all people — are either masculine or feminine. “You’re constantly moving back and forth between the politics and the composition,” Strätling said.

“To me it felt like dancing,” Gümüsay said of the process. Haruna-Oelker added that the team tried hard to find words “which don’t hurt anyone.”

But whereas the German translators were happy to engage with the identity politics, others expressed frustration at the translator departures and their implications. Nuria Barrios, the translator of the poem’s Spanish edition, who is white, wrote in the newspaper El País that Rijneveld's stepping down from the project was “a catastrophe.”

“It is the victory of identity politics over creative freedom,” she wrote, adding: “To remove imagination from translation is to subject the craft to a lobotomy.”

Some Black academics and translators have also expressed concern. “There is a tacit idea that we are supposed to be especially concerned about the ‘appropriateness’ of a translator’s identity in the particular case of blackness,” John McWhorter, a professor of English and comparative literature at Columbia University, said in an email.

Other differences between writers and their translators — such as wealth levels, or political views — were not sparking concern, McWhorter added. “Instead, our sense of ‘diversity’ is narrower than that word implies: It’s only about skin color,” he said.

Couching the discussion in terms of appropriateness was “really ridiculous,” said Janice Deul, a Black Dutch journalist and activist who on Feb. 25 wrote an opinion piece for De Volkskrant, a Dutch newspaper, calling Rijneveld’s appointment “incomprehensible.” The following day, Rijneveld resigned.

“This is not about who can translate, it’s about who gets opportunities to translate,” Deul said. She listed 10 Black Dutch spoken-word artists who could have done the job in her article but said all of them had been overlooked.

The one opinion missing in all of this is, of course, Gorman’s. Viking is releasing “The Hill We Climb” in the United States on Tuesday. Apple TV Plus on Friday began streaming her interview with Oprah Winfrey, but she has not commented on the debate her work has spurred. Her spokeswoman didn’t respond to requests for comment.

Gorman, or her agent, Writers House, which represents the translation rights, appeared to have influence on who was selected. Aylin LaMorey-Salzmann, the editor of the German edition of “The Hill We Climb,” said that the rights owner had to agree to the choice, which had to be someone of similar profile to Gorman.

Irene Christopoulou, an editor at Psichogios, the poem’s Greek publisher, was still waiting for approval for its choice of translator. The translator was a white “emerging female poet,” Christopoulou said in an email. “Due to the racial profile of the Greek population, there are no translators/poets of color to choose from,” she added.

A spokeswoman for Tammi, the poem’s Finnish publisher, said in an email that “The negotiations are still going on with the agent and Amanda Gorman herself.”

Several European publishers named Black musicians as their translators. Timbuktu, a rapper, has completed a Swedish version, and Marie-Pierra Kakoma, a singer better known as Lous and the Yakuza, has translated the French edition, which will be published by Editions Fayard in May.

“I thought Lous’ writing skills, her sense of rhythm, her connection with spoken poetry would be tremendous assets,” Sophie de Closets, a publisher at Fayard, said in an email explaining why she chose a pop star.

Issues of identity “should definitely be considered” when hiring translators, de Closets added, but that went beyond race. “It is the publisher’s responsibility to look for the ideal combination between one given work and the person who will translate it,” she said.

Haruna-Oelker, one of the German translators, said one disappointing outcome of the debate in Europe was it had diverted attention from the message of Gorman’s poem. “The Hill We Climb” spoke about bringing people together, Haruna-Oelker said, just as the German publisher had done by assembling a team.

“We’ve tried a beautiful experiment here, and this is where the future lies,” Gümüsay said. “The future lies in trying to find new forms of collaboration, trying to bring together more voices, more sets of eyes, more perspectives to create something new.”

Hadija Haruna-Oelker, a Black journalist, has just produced the German translation of Amanda Gorman’s “The Hill We Climb,” the poem about a “skinny Black girl” that for many people was the highlight of President Joe Biden’s inauguration.

(Rijneveld declined an interview request for this article.) In March, the debate reignited after Victor Obiols, another white translator, was dropped by the Catalan publisher Univers. Obiols said he was told his profile “was not suitable for the project.” (A Univers spokeswoman declined to comment.) Literary figures and newspaper columnists across Europe have been arguing for weeks about what these decisions mean, turning Gorman’s poem into the latest flash point in debates about identity politics across the continent. “This is not about color.” She added: “It’s about quality, it’s about the skills you have, and about perspectives.” Each member of the German team brought different things to the group, she said. Haruna-Oelker added that the team tried hard to find words “which don’t hurt anyone.” But whereas the German translators were happy to engage with the identity politics, others expressed frustration at the translator departures and their implications. Nuria Barrios, the translator of the poem’s Spanish edition, who is white, wrote in the newspaper El País that Rijneveld's stepping down from the project was “a catastrophe.” “It is the victory of identity politics over creative freedom,” she wrote, adding: “To remove imagination from translation is to subject the craft to a lobotomy.” Some Black academics and translators have also expressed concern. “There is a tacit idea that we are supposed to be especially concerned about the ‘appropriateness’ of a translator’s identity in the particular case of blackness,” John McWhorter, a professor of English and comparative literature at Columbia University, said in an email. Fashion retailer H&M is facing a potential boycott in China after a statement the company made last year expressing deep concerns over reports of forced labor in Xinjiang stirred a social media storm this week.

A similar statement from Nike was also attracting criticism on Wednesday, a sign that Western clothing manufacturers could face growing hostility in China for their public stances against forced labor in Xinjiang and for halting cotton sourcing from the region.

The H&M statement, which can be found on the website of the Swedish retailer, was posted in September after growing global scrutiny around the use of Uyghurs in forced labor in Xinjiang.

In it, H&M said that it was “deeply concerned by reports from civil society organizations and media that include accusations of forced labor and discrimination of ethno-religious minorities” in Xinjiang and that it had stopped buying cotton from growers in the region.

More than eight months later, in the wake of sanctions by Western countries against China for its treatment of Uyghurs, H&M is facing online backlash from Chinese consumers. The outrage has been stoked by comments on platforms like the microblogging site Sina Weibo from celebrities and groups like the Communist Youth League, an influential Communist Party organization.

“Want to make money in China while spreading false rumors and boycotting Xinjiang cotton? Wishful thinking!” the group said in a post, echoing one of the People’s Liberation Army’s statements that called H&M’s stance “ignorant and arrogant.”

On Monday, Britain, Canada, the European Union and the United States announced sanctions on Chinese officials in an escalating row over the treatment of Uyghurs in Xinjiang. Roughly 1 in 5 cotton garments sold globally contains cotton or yarn from the region, where authorities have used coercive labor programs and mass internment to remold as many as 1 million Uyghurs, Kazakhs and other largely Muslim minorities into model workers obedient to the Communist Party.

Nike could be next. The company posted a statement on its website expressing concerns “about reports of forced labor in and connected to” Xinjiang. “Nike does not source products” from the region, and “we have confirmed with our contract suppliers that they are not using textiles or spun yarn from the region.”

On Wednesday, Nike was at the top of Weibo’s “hot search” list. Some users were furious that Nike had joined the boycott of cotton from the region. The company declined to comment.

Huang Xuan, a Chinese actor who had a menswear contract with H&M, posted a statement saying he would quit the deal, adding that he opposed “slander and creating rumors” as well as “any attempt to discredit the country.” Singer and actress Victoria Song — who used to endorse H&M — also released a statement, saying that she no longer had a relationship with the brand and that “national interests are above all else.”

By Wednesday evening, at least three major Chinese e-commerce platforms — Pinduoduo, Jingdong and Tmall — had removed H&M from search results and withdrawn its products from sale. The actions underscored the pressures faced by foreign companies doing business in China while navigating political and cultural debates like the country’s sovereignty and its checkered human rights record.

On Wednesday night, H&M China responded with a post on the Sina Weibo microblogging site, saying the company did not “represent any political position.”

“H&M Group respects Chinese consumers as always,” the statement said. “We are committed to long-term investment and development in China.”

H&M is the world’s second-largest fashion retailer by sales, after Inditex, the owner of Zara, and China is its fourth-biggest market.

State broadcaster CCTV criticized H&M, and said it was “a miscalculation to try to play a righteous hero.” H&M, it said, “will definitely pay a heavy price for its wrong action.”

A painting of a Paris street scene by Vincent Van Gogh, that had been held in a private collection for over a century sold for a final price of 11.25 million euros ($13.2 million) at auction on Thursday.

The work, painted by Van Gogh in 1887 while he was lodging with his brother Theo in the French capital, was put on display by Sotheby's auction house in Paris earlier this month, marking the first time it was made available for public viewing.

The auction house put an estimated value on the artwork of between 5 million euros ($6.08 million) and 8 million euros ($9.72 million).

Titled "A street scene in Montmartre" - or "Scene de rue a Montmartre" in French - the painting depicts a man and woman, strolling arm in arm past a ramshackle fence with a windmill in the background.

The painting is part of a series that Van Gogh produced of scenes in Montmartre, a hilly district of Paris now dominated by the Sacre Coeur church.

When the artist was there, the church was under construction and the area was a patchwork of fields, houses and windmills on the edge of the city that was starting to attract a bohemian artist set with its cheap rents.

The auction house said the painting had been seen in catalogues, but has never itself been on public display. It did not identify the current owner.

Work by British artist Sacha Jafri consisting of the world's largest painting on canvas has been sold for $62 million at an auction in Dubai, organisers said on Tuesday.

The "Journey of Humanity" is split into 70 framed sections spanning 1,595.76 square metres (17,176 square feet) -- equivalent to nearly four basketball courts.

Organisers said in a statement that the work sold for $62 million, double the amount targeted, with the money going to charities helping children.

Andre Abdoune, a French national residing in Dubai -- one of the seven emirates that make up the UAE -- bought all 70 segments on Monday at an auction in Dubai's "Atlantis, The Palm".

The work, confirmed by the Guinness World Records as the "Largest Art Canvas", had been put on display in the ballroom of the opulent hotel, and was originally meant to be sold in segments.

"I come from a poor family, and I knew at times how it feels to have nothing to eat, but at least I had the love of my parents, schooling, and support," Abdoune, who runs a crypto-currency business, told AFP.

"The painting was very powerful when I saw it, and, for me, it would have been a mistake to separate the pieces," said the former stock trader.

Abdoune also highlighted the coronavirus pandemic, noting how it had taken a toll on children around the world.

"We have to react, so if I can bring my little piece in the puzzle, I'm happy," he said.

Jafri had aimed to raise $30 million to fund health, sanitation and education initiatives for children in impoverished parts of the world.

The 44-year-old contemporary artist is hoping his painting will spark a humanitarian movement.

Children from 140 countries submitted artwork online to be included in Jafri's creation, which was completed at the end of September.

'Journey of Humanity', largest art canvas sells for $62 million

Queen Elizabeth's granddaughter Zara Tindall and her husband Mike Tindall welcomed their third child- a baby boy- together on Wednesday. The baby is Queen's 10th great-grandchild and has been named Lucas Philip Tindall. He is the 22nd in line to the British throne.

Zara Tindall, born to the 94-year-old monarch's daughter Princess Anne, delivered her third child on their bathroom floor after they were unable to make it to the hospital in time.

"The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh (Prince Philip) are delighted with the news and look forward to meeting their 10th Great Grandchild when circumstances allow," a Buckingham Palace spokesperson said.

The newest royal, who weighed 8lbs 4oz, has the middle name Philip in honour of Zara's grandfather, Prince Philip, and Mike's own father.

"Arrived very quickly. Didn't make it to hospital. On the bathroom floor," he told 'The Good, The Bad & The Rugby' podcast.

A painting by UK street artist Banksy is expected to raise millions of pounds for the staff of Britain's state-run National Health Service (NHS) at auction on Tuesday.

The painting by the elusive artist, titled "Game Changer", first appeared at Southampton General Hospital on England's south coast, during the first wave of the global health crisis last May.

The black-and-white painting shows a small boy playing with a nurse doll wearing a mask and a cape. Spiderman and Batman superhero toys lie discarded in a bin behind him.

The artist -- who first emerged out of Bristol's graffiti scene in southwest England in the 1990s -- left a note with the painting thanking hospital staff for their work battling the pandemic.

"Thanks for all you're doing. I hope this brightens up the place a bit, even if it's only in black and white," he wrote.

Christie's auction house has placed a pre-sale estimate of between £2.5 million ($3.5 million, 2.9 million euros) and £3.5 million on the artwork.

Proceeds from the auction will go to NHS charities and a reproduction of the piece will continue to hang at Southampton General Hospital.

- 'Shock and surprise' -
Christie's said in a statement the painting was a departure from Banksy's usual irreverent style and was instead "a personal tribute to those who continue to turn the tide of the pandemic".

"As an artwork, however, it will remain forever a symbol of its time: a reminder of the world's real game changers, and of the vital work they perform," the international art seller said.

The painting may also have a political subtext though, as it was donated shortly after Prime Minister Boris Johnson told the public antibody tests could be a "game changer" in the pandemic -- only to have experts quickly pour cold water on the idea.

Speaking in a video shared by Southampton Hospitals Charity earlier this month, staff at Southampton General Hospital thanked Banksy for the painting and shared their enthusiasm for the work.

Steph Gurney, a senior nurse with the hospital's Acute Medical Unit, said the appearance of the painting had come as a "real shock and a surprise" and that it "meant so much that a world-renowned artist would want to donate a piece of work to our hospital".

Banksy has continued to create other works in the pandemic. In July 2020, disguised as a cleaner, he spray-painted a series of rats encouraging people to wear face masks on the London underground.

In December, he drew a woman sneezing on the side of a house in Bristol.

Banksy painting to raise millions for UK health service

There are days when getting out of bed seems too much effort and yet, skipping your regular workout is just not an option. The perfect way to combine a little laziness with physical activity is to workout from your bed! These are some easy exercises that don’t require you to step out of the cozy comfort of your bed, yet help you stay fit.

* Disclaimer- The surface of the bed should be flat/hard. Soft & cosy mattresses can cause injury.

Leg lifts

Lie flat on your back with your hands lying straight at your side. Lift your left leg till it (calf and hip) are at a 90-degree angle to your body. Count to five then slowly lower the leg. Repeat with the right leg. You can do a set of 10 leg lifts. You can also try the reverse leg lifts. Lie flat on your stomach. Clench your buttocks and lift a leg as high as possible. Make sure that the leg is straight. Count to 5 and slowly lower the leg. Repeat with the other leg.

Bicycle

Lie flat on the bed with your knees bent and your hands are behind your head. Inhale and slowly raise your knees to about a 90-degree angle. Exhale and go through a bicycle pedalling motion, bringing one knee up towards your armpit while straightening the other leg. Aim for three sets of 12 to 15 repetitions.

Tricep dips

Position your hands shoulder-width apart on the edge of the bed. Squeeze your core and glutes and start the move by bending your elbows. Dip down until your arms are at a 90-degree angle. Be sure to keep your back close to the bed. Pause at the bottom for a one or two count, then press back up powerfully. Do 15 to 20 reps per set and aim to do two to three sets

Squats

Stand next to your bed with your feet hip-width apart. Squat down keeping your knee over your toes. Let your butt touch the ground and then come up, standing straight. Keep your core tight during the squats. To make this slightly harder, keep your feet wide apart and squat deeper. Repeat the exercise 15-25 times.

Sit-up Bicycle

Sit on the bed with the legs extended at front. Lift your legs so that the hips are in a straight line and your calves are parallel to the bed. Put your hands at the back of your head, interlacing your fingers. Move your legs in a circular bicycling motion. Alternatively, you can also move them in a crisscrossing motion from one side to the other.

Stretches

Finish your exercises with stretches to cool down at the end. Sit with your legs extended, touch your left toe with your right hand with your left hand stretched at the back, and your torso slightly twisted to the left. Retract and repeat with the opposite side. Make sure your limbs are stretched and your back stays straight. You can also do simple stretches by extending your legs at the front and your hands above your head, stretching them as much as possible.

These exercises are simple to execute on your bed. However, do make sure that the mattress is firm and there are no encumbrances in the form of bunched sheets and tangled blankets or quilts.

Prince Harry is using his own experiences with tragedy to give back to society. The royal recently penned the forward for a children's book called 'Hospital by the Hill', aimed at kids mourning the loss of loved ones during the coronavirus pandemic.

In his emotional message, Harry wrote about his own experiences coping with loss after the death of his mother, Princess Diana, in 1997, when he was just 12 years old.

According to People, the forward written by Harry reads, "When I was a young boy I lost my mum. At the time I didn't want to believe it or accept it, and it left a huge hole inside of me. I know how you feel, and I want to assure you that over time that hole will be filled with so much love and support. We all cope with loss in a different way, but when a parent goes to heaven, I was told their spirit, their love and the memories of them do not. They are always with you and you can hold onto them forever. I find this to be true."

Harry went on to write about the empathy he feels for anyone else—particularly any young person—coping with the loss of a close loved on.

"Now, I never met them, but I know this person was special to you, and they were someone incredibly kind, caring and loving because of where they chose to work. Helping others is one of the most important jobs anyone can ever do," he continued. "You may feel alone, you may feel sad, you may feel angry, you may feel bad. This feeling will pass. And I will make a promise to you—you will feel better and stronger once you are ready to talk about how it makes you feel."

Finally, Harry added, "I hope this book helps remind you of just how special your parent or loved one was. And how special you are too."

The book, which tells the story of a young person who loses their mother, a frontline worker, during the coronavirus pandemic, is being given free to any child or young person in the UK who is grieving the loss of a loved one amid the pandemic.

Prince William reportedly misses his brother Prince Harry. According to The Sunday Times, despite the tension between the two brothers William hopes that their "relationship will heal with time."

William was the most upset by a statement Harry and Meghan released last year, as they prepared to step down as senior members of the Royal family.

While outlining their plans to launch a non-profit organization following their exit, the couple released a statement which in part addressed the rules surrounding the use of the word "royal.' "

"While there is not any jurisdiction by The Monarchy or Cabinet Office over the use of the word 'Royal' overseas, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex do not intend to use 'Sussex Royal' or any iteration of the word 'Royal,' " the message read.

A source close to the Duke of Cambridge told The Sunday Times, "That was it for William, he felt they'd blindsided the Queen in such an insulting and disrespectful way."

"Once he got over the anger of how things happened, he was left with the absence of his brother," a source told the outlet. "They shared everything about their lives, an office, a foundation, meetings together most days and there was a lot of fun along the way. He'll miss it forever."

Another source told the outlet that while William, 38, is still "very upset by what's happened," he's "absolutely intent that he and Harry's relationship will heal in time."

During his joint Oprah Winfrey interview with Meghan, Harry acknowledged that he and his brother, who is second in line to the throne behind their father, are on "different paths."

"I love William to bits. He's my brother. We've been through hell together," Harry, 36, explained. "But we are on different paths."

Although he described his relationship with his older sibling at the moment as "space," Harry reiterated that he "will always be there" for William.

While stepping out for the first time since the interview aired, William told reporters that he hadn't "spoken to" his brother about the sit-down yet, "but I will do." Since then, both William and their father have been in contact with Harry.

"Harry has talked to his brother and he has talked to his father too," Gayle King, who is friends with Oprah and the Duchess of Sussex, revealed on CBS This Morning recently. "The word I was given was that those conversations were not productive. But they are glad that they have at least started a conversation."

According to a People report, the relationship between Charles and his sons has been complex for years. "There has always been this complicated relationship with their dad," a palace source was quoted saying. "It's not a straightforward father-son relationship," the palace source added. "He is their father and their boss, and they are beholden to him to fund their offices and lives."
