Singer Justin Timberlake arrested on DWI charges in New York

American singer-actor Justin Timberlake was arrested in Long Island, New York, for driving while intoxicated or impaired. According to the Sag Harbor Police Department, Timberlake, 43, remains in police custody as of the morning of Tuesday (June 18).

While official charges have not been confirmed by the police, sources told local media that Timberlake was apprehended on DWI charges.

The arrest followed a dinner at the American Hotel in Sag Harbor. Timberlake was reportedly on his way to a friend's house when he was pulled over.

"Nobody was hurt," a source told People magazine. "He will be arraigned in about an hour."

Timberlake is expected to be arraigned in Sag Harbor, on the eastern end of Long Island, according to a statement from the Suffolk County district attorney’s office.

Timberlake’s representative is yet to comment on the arrest.

Sag Harbor is a coastal village in the Hamptons, around 100 miles (160 kilometres) from New York City. In the summer, it is a hotspot for wealthy visitors.

Timberlake, who is currently on tour to promote his latest album, Everything I Thought It Was, is scheduled to perform at Chicago's United Center on June 21 and 22, followed by two shows at New York City's Madison Square Garden on June 25 and 26.

Timberlake, who has won 10 Grammy awards and four Primetime Emmy Awards, was in the headlines last year when fellow singer Britney Spears released her memoir, The Woman in Me. Several chapters are devoted to their relationship, including deeply personal details about pregnancy, abortion and painful breakup.

He rose to fame in the popular boy band NSYNC and embarked on a solo recording career in 2002.

As an actor, Timberlake has won acclaim in movies including The Social Networkand Friends With Benefits.
