In a major government reshuffle, Indian President Droupadi Murmu on Tuesday (Dec 24) appointed the governors of five states—Odisha, Mizoram, Kerala, Bihar, and Manipur. 
Former Union home secretary of the country, Ajay Kumar Bhalla, has been appointed as the governor of Manipur. Bhalla's appointment is crucial at this time since Manipur has been reeling under ethnic violence that has rocked the state since May 2023.
According to a statement released by the President's Secretariat, the new appointments would take effect from the dates the governors would assume charge of their respective offices.

The statement said that President Murmu accepted the resignation of Raghubar Das, who had been serving as Odisha governor. Outgoing Mizoram Governor Dr Hari Babu Kambhampati has been appointed as Odisha's governor.

Outgoing Bihar Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar will be taking charge as Kerala's governor. On the other hand, Arif Mohammed Khan, the outgoing governor of Kerala, would become Bihar's governor. 
<h2>Bhalla to take over as Manipur governor amid ethnic strife</h2>
Bhalla, a seasoned administrator, would be taking charge as Manipur's governor at a time when the state has been witnessing an ethnic strife for more than a year. 
The violence in Manipur between the Meitei and Kuki communities erupted following a rally by the All Tribal Students Union of Manipur (ATSUM) on May 3, 2023, against the high court's directive to consider the inclusion of Meiteis in the list of Scheduled Tribes (STs).
Since the strife began, hundreds have been killed and around 60,000 people have been displaced.

In the showpiece event, the 22-year-old won two bronze medals — one in the women's 10m air pistol event and the other with Sarabjot Singh in the mixed 10m pistol event. However, a 12-member National Sports Day committee, headed by retired Supreme Court judge, Justice V Ramasubramam did not recommend the shooter's name, irking her father Ramakrishna.
While the Sports Ministry has claimed that the 22-year-old did not apply for the award, her father revealed that they did apply for the honour but never heard back (it is unclear if the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) for the list). Amid all this, Ramakrishna has made a big claim, saying he should have made Manu a cricketer rather than a shooter.
Manu's father said in an interview with TOI, "I regret putting her in the sport of shooting. I should have instead made her a cricketer. Then, all the awards and accolades would have come her way. She won two Olympic medals in a single edition, no one has ever done that. What else do you expect my child to do for the country? The government must recognise her efforts."

Ramakrishna said that Manu was disheartened and claimed she regretted participating in the Olympics and winning medals for the country.
"I spoke to Manu, and she was disheartened by all this. She told me 'I shouldn't have gone to the Olympics and won medals for the country. In fact, I shouldn't have become a sportsperson'," Manu's father added.
Manu became the first-ever Indian athlete, post Independence, to win two medals in an Olympic edition. In 2020, she was honoured with the Arjuna Award.

Questions were raised with Kotian's addition as India had more experienced options such as Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel. In the press conference ahead of the fourth and penultimate Test versus Australia, i.e. the Boxing Day encounter in Melbourne, captain Rohit Sharma explained the team management's stance.
Rohit said, "Tanush was here a month back and Kuldeep doesn't have a visa. We needed someone to get here as quickly as possible. Tanush was ready and played well here. But jokes apart, he has been doing well over the last two years and we wanted a backup in case we play two spinners in Sydney or Melbourne."

He further said, "Kuldeep is not 100 per cent fit as he went through a hernia surgery. Axar recently had a baby so was not going to travel. Hence, Tanush was the best option for us and he was probably one of the reasons why Mumbai went on to win the Ranji trophy last season,” he said.
Talking about Kotian, the 26-year-old has played 33 first-class games, claiming 101 wickets at 25.70. In addition, he accounted for 1,525 runs in 47 innings, at 41.21 with two centuries and 13 fifties.
Thus, India now have three spin-bowling options in the form of Kotian, Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar for the remaining two Tests in the 2024/25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT). The pitch in the last two Tests, especially the series finale in Sydney, is likely to assist spinners. 
At present, the BGT is tied at 1-1 after India won the series opener in Perth, lost the following day-night Test in Adelaide before both sides settled for a draw in Brisbane.

Thus, Rohit supported the 'modern-day great' in tackling his issues and becoming good at the MCG, with the five-match series tied at 1-1 after three Tests.
When asked if he had spoken to Kohli about his weakness, Rohit Sharma said in the pre-match presser, "You only said he is a modern-day great. Modern-day greats will figure out their way or the path (to overcome issues)."

Speaking of Rohit, Hitman has also struggled for runs in the ongoing series versus Pat Cummins-led Australia. After missing the series opener, due to paternity leave, Rohit has had scores of 3, 6 and 10. He demoted himself from opening the innings to batting at No. 6 but the move hasn't paid dividends. He did this to ensure KL Rahul bats at the top, who has been in good form since the series opener.
On being asked about his batting spot, Rohit said, "Let's not worry about that. I think 'who bats where?' is something that we need to figure out within ourselves. It's not something I should be discussing at every press conference. Whatever it takes for our team to look good or give the best chance to succeed, we will do that."
The Boxing Day Test commences on Thursday (Dec 26) as both sides will look to take an unassailable lead in the five-match series. If India win, they will be able to retain the BGT once again, since 2016/17.

Ashwin ended a stellar run at the international level with 765 scalps -- second-most among Indians. In Tests, he accounted for 537 scalps whereas the wily spinner claimed 228 wickets in white-ball formats. After his retirement, Ashwin opened up on his career and not being able to captain India once.
On not captaining India, Ashwin said during a Sky Sports Podcast, "It's interesting. I am smart enough to know what works for me and what doesn't for another person. When I started my career, I got first-class captaincy very early. I have won a few tournaments for my team. I believe I had it in me. But I did not have any regret that I didn't go on to lead my country because these are not things that I can control."

The wily spinner opined, "I have realised somebody needs to feel that I am good enough to lead the team, I need to get another 15-20 people to come along with me for me to be able to lead the team. It wasn't meant for me in this particular chapter of my life."
"I don't think this office or corporate felt I was good enough to lead the team. That doesn't mean I am not good enough for leadership. Leadership, you don't need a title to do that because, within me, I was a great leader in that group to be able to contribute to other people's success. I looked out for zones of contribution. I did it to the best of my ability. I do not have regrets, but I do think it would have been something I would have enjoyed," Ashwin added.
Ashwin made his debut under MS Dhoni in 2010. He played under numerous captains, such as Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane, Rohit Sharma, Gautam Gambhir, KL Rahul, etc. While he didn't lead India, he has had enough leadership exposure at the domestic level.
The 38-year-old Ashwin is known to be an astute reader of the game and will make his presence felt in the domestic tournaments.

Former Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz was on Monday (Dec 23) found guilty by congressional ethics investigators to have paid numerous women, including a minor, for sex, and to have purchased and used illegal drugs, CBS News reported citing a final draft of an investigative report.
"The Committee determined there is substantial evidence that Representative Gaetz violated House Rules and other standards of conduct prohibiting prostitution, statutory rape, illicit drug use, impermissible gifts, special favours or privileges, and obstruction of Congress," the report said.
CBS reported that the findings were part of a long-running probe by the House Ethics Committee into Gaetz, 42. The probe concluded that he violated multiple state laws related to sexual misconduct while in office.
<h2>Gaetz denies improper conduct</h2>
As Republican and upcoming US president Donald Trump emerged victorious in the November 5 presidential election, he announced plans to nominate Gaetz for attorney general.

However, after facing opposition from some fellow Republicans, Gaetz withdrew from the consideration.
CBS News reported that on Monday, the 42-year-old filed a lawsuit in federal court to block the release of the report (by the House Ethics Committee), saying that he was a private citizen and not subject to the jurisdiction of the committee.
Gaetz has denied any improper conduct and asserted the claims were a "smear" invented by his political enemies. 
<h2>A look at the report's crucial findings</h2>
CBS News reported that one of the findings of the investigative report included allegations of sex and drug-fuelled parties and travel, including a 2018 trip to the Bahamas where witnesses said he took ecstasy and had sex with four women.
"From 2017 to 2020, Representative Gaetz made tens of thousands of dollars in payments to women that the Committee determined were likely in connection with sexual activity and/or drug use," the report said.
Further, the ethics committee pointed out it received a testimony that during a party in 2017, Gaetz had sex with a minor aged 17 at that time. The minor was identified as "Victim A."

<h2>Waging war through deception and trickery</h2>
According to a report by CBS News early Monday (Dec 23), the two recently retired Mossad agents were among those who spearheaded the years-long operation against Hezbollah.

The report said that Mossad's walkie-talkie operation was waging war through deception and trickery, in line with the spy agency's motto. 
Work began on weaponizing the walkie-talkies more than a decade before Israel set them off in September, the report added.
One of the agents, who identified himself as Michael, said that the walkie-talkie was a weapon, "just like a bullet or a missile or a mortar."
Michael said that the battery of the walkie-talkie, which was made in a Mossad facility, included an explosive device. Hezbollah bought more than 16,000 of the exploding devices, some of which were eventually used against them, he added.
The report said that the price of the walkie-talkie could not be too low as Israel did not want Hezbollah to be suspicious. 
Mossad also wanted to hide its identity as the seller and ensure the walkie-talkies couldn't be traced back to Israel. So the spy agency set up shell companies to infiltrate the supply chain.
<h2>Walkie-talkies were just not enough</h2>
CBS News reported that the walkie-talkies were designed to go into the chest pocket of a tactical vest for soldiers.
However, Mossad wanted to plant a device that Hezbollah members would have on them at all times. Hence, the agency began development on booby-trapped pagers in 2022, the second ex-Mossad agent (who chose to identify himself as Gabriel) said.
Gabriel said Mossad learnt that Hezbollah was buying pagers from Gold Apollo, a company based in Taiwan. 
The Gold Apollo pagers were sleek, and shiny and could fit into pockets. Mossad needed a larger pager to fit explosives inside, he added.

Gabriel said that using dummies, Mossad carried out tests with the pager inside a padded glove, held next to the dummy's face, to calibrate the grammes of powdered explosive needed to be just enough to hurt the fighter, but not the person next to him.
The retired Mossad agent said that the plan was to hurt Hezbollah members (with pagers), not people nearby. 
<h2>Shell companies set up</h2>
After convincing Mossad head Dadi Barnea of the pager's merits, Gabriel pointed out that the pager was advertised in fake ads on YouTube. 
The device was touted as being robust, dustproof, waterproof, and also having a long battery life. Gabriel said that Mossad did such a good job promoting the pager that people outside of Hezbollah wanted to buy it.
He added that Israel set up shell companies to dupe Gold Apollo. Mossad fully manufactured the pagers and had a licensing partnership with Gold Apollo. 
"When they (Hezbollah) are buying from us, they have zero clue that they are buying from the Mossad...," Gabriel said.
