<p>According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), a powerful earthquake measuring 7.2&nbsp;on the Richter scale struck the Alaska Peninsula region on Sunday. The quake hit offshore about 55 miles southwest of Sand Point, Alaska.</p>

<p>Earlier, the USGS reported that the magnitude of the earthquake was 7.4, but later it revised the figure to 7.2.</p>

<p>Following the earthquake, the US&nbsp;Tsunami Warning System raised concerns about a potential tsunami. The warning, however, was later revised to a tsunami advisory before being withdrawn altogether.</p>

Earthquake of magnitude 7.2 strikes Alaska Peninsula region, tsunami advisory cancelled

<p>Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe has said he would like to see the Indian rupee used as much as the US Dollar. His remarks at the Indian CEO Forum in Colombo came days ahead of his scheduled visit to New Delhi.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Wickremesinghe, who is also Sri Lanka’s finance minister, gave these remarks in response to the chair of the forum, TS Prakash, who advocated for the increased use of the rupee by Sri Lanka in international trade.</p>

<h2><strong>Wickremesinghe’s statement</strong></h2>

<p>While drawing a parallel between the rise of East Asia and India, Wickremesinghe said, “Just as East Asia, including countries like Japan, Korea and China, witnessed significant growth 75 years ago, it is now India’s turn, along with the Indian Ocean region.”</p>

<p>“It makes no difference to us if India (the Indian rupee) becomes a common currency. We will have to figure out how to go about it. We must become more open to the outside world,” the president added.</p>

<p>“The world is evolving and India is undergoing rapid development, particularly under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership,” he said.</p>

<h2><strong>The Sri Lankan economy gradually recovering</strong></h2>

<p>Wickremesinghe also stated that Sri Lanka benefits from its close proximity to India, as well as its rich history, cultural heritage, and long-standing trading relationships that have spanned over 2,500 years.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Russia on Sunday thwarted Ukraine’s aerial assault on the Crimean port of Sevastopol, reported Reuters citing a Russia-installed official. Russian air defence forces shot down nine Ukrainian drones near the Black Sea region.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Mikhail Razvozhayev, the Russia-appointed Governor of Sevastopol, wrote on Telegram that no object, either in the city or on the water, was damaged in the attack.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“Two aerial drones were shot down over the sea, five were intercepted by Russia's electronic warfare forces and two water surface drones were destroyed on the outer shore,” he was quoted as saying by Reuters.</p>

<p>The attacks were over the harbour of Sevastopol and the city's Balaklava, Khersones districts, Razvozhayev said earlier.</p>

<p>The drone attack prompted the authorities to shut down the passenger ferry service along with all other modes of maritime transport in the area.</p>

<h2><strong>Conflict intensifies in the South</strong></h2>

<p>CNN reported heavy fighting from the southern front, where Kyiv is hoping to break Russia’s land bridge to Crimea. However, military analysts were unable to confirm whether or not Ukraine had an upper edge against invading&nbsp;Russian forces.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Military analyst Rob Lee was quoted by CNN as saying, “Both sides are taking attrition right now … but it is not clear which side can sustain it better.”</p>

<p>“On the Russian side, if they take enough losses and Ukraine can isolate parts of the front, (then Ukrainian forces) may be able to achieve a breakthrough. On the flip side, if Ukraine keeps taking losses and more attrition, the offensive might culminate too soon,” he added.</p>

<p>Ukraine has so far failed to get a significant number of towns and villages liberated from Russian control in the South under its so-called counteroffensive operation.</p>

<h2><strong>Western partners not impatient: Kyiv</strong></h2>

<p>Meanwhile, Kyiv has said its Western partners were not pressing its defence forces for immediate positive results. The Ukrainian counteroffensive began in June but has failed to yield the expected results.</p>

<p>The water level in Yamuna was recorded at 205.91 metres at 11 am today. The water level has continuously receded over the past two days but still remains slightly above the danger mark of 205.33 metres.</p>

<h2><strong>More rainfall predicted</strong></h2>

<p>The Indian Meteorological Department has predicted cloudy weather for Sunday in the national capital region, accompanied by light or moderate rain. While the authorities have withdrawn a severe flood threat from some areas, the city remains on high alert.</p>

<p>Meanwhile, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said efforts were underway to open all five gates of the Yamuna barrage to facilitate faster outflow of water in the raging Yamuna.</p>

<p>"The water level in the Yamuna is receding. The situation will be normal soon if it doesn't rain. If it rains, then it may take a bit longer," he was quoted as saying by ANI.</p>

<p>Protesters were seen scrawling ‘Biden save us’ slogans on the roads. They are calling on international powers to press the Israeli government to not go ahead with the overhaul.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In fact, thousands of protesters also gathered before US diplomatic office in Tel Aviv Thursday night and called on the Biden administration to condemn Netanyahu’s plans to implement judicial changes.</p>

<p>Later in a video message, the PM said he was well and urged his fellow countrymen to stay hydrated. “I ask you all, spend less time in the sun, drink more water, and may we all have a good new week," he said.</p>

<p>Reuters reported that he was due to be discharged from the hospital after no irregularities were found in additional medical tests.</p>

<p>The executives plan to hold meetings with US officials to talk about market conditions, export controls and other matters affecting their businesses, one of the sources said. It was not immediately clear whom the executives would meet.</p>

<p>Intel and Qualcomm declined to comment, and officials at the White House did not immediately return a request for comment.</p>

<p>The sources said other semiconductor CEOs may also be in Washington next week. The sources declined to be named because they were not authorised to speak to the media.</p>

<p>US officials are considering tightening export rules affecting high-performance computing chips and shipments to Huawei Technologies Co Ltd, sources told Reuters in June. The rules would respectively affect Intel, which is preparing a new artificial intelligence chip that could be shipped to China, and Qualcomm, which has a licence to sell chips to Huawei.</p>

<p>The Biden administration last October issued a sweeping set of rules designed to freeze China's semiconductor industry in place while the US pours billions of dollars in subsidies into its own chip industry.</p>

<p>The possible rule tightening would hit Nvidia particularly hard. The company's strong position in the AI chip market helped boost its worth to $1 trillion earlier this year.</p>

<p>The chip industry has been warmly received in Washington in recent years as lawmakers and the White House work to shift more production to the US and its allies, and away from China. Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger and Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon have met often with government officials.</p>

<p>Next week's meetings, which one of the sources said could include joint sessions between executives and US officials, come as Nvidia Corp and other chip companies fear a permanent loss of sales for an industry with large amounts of business in China while tensions escalate between Washington and Beijing.</p>

<p>Many US chip firms get more than one-fifth of their revenue from China, and industry executives have argued that reducing those sales would cut into profits that they reinvest into research and development.</p>
