China on Monday announced export controls on some drones and drone-related equipment, saying it wanted to safeguard "national security and interests" amid escalating tension with the United States over access to technology.

The restrictions on equipment including some drone engines, lasers, communication equipment and anti-drone systems would take effect on Sept. 1, the commerce ministry said.

The controls would also affect some consumer drones, and no civilian drones could be exported for military purposes, a ministry spokesperson said in a statement.

"China's modest expansion of the scope of its drone control this time is an important measure to demonstrate our stance as a responsible major country, to implement global security initiatives, and maintain world peace," the unidentified spokesperson said.

U.S. lawmakers have said that more than 50% of drones sold in the U.S. are made by Chinese-based company DJI, and they are the most popular drone used by public safety agencies.

DJI said on Monday it always strictly complied with and enforced laws and regulations of the countries or regions in which it operates, including China's export control regulatory requirements.

"We have never designed and manufactured products and equipment for military use, nor have we ever marketed or sold our products for use in military conflicts or wars in any country," the drone maker added.

Chinese authorities announced new measures to boost consumption on Monday, as fresh economic data suggested that the country's post-Covid recovery is running out of steam and growth is slowing.

Official figures released Monday showed factory activity contracting for the fourth straight month in July, adding to a run of dismal economic data that has ramped up calls for government support measures.

A sluggish job market and general uncertainty over the future mean consumer confidence is low.

China's State Council released on Monday a 20-point plan to increase consumption across the board, touching on housing, culture and tourism, as well as green consumption such as electric vehicles.

The measures aim to increase the supply of subsidised rental accommodation and try to solve other problems around housing, particularly for young people.

Once a driving force behind the economy, a crisis in the real estate sector means many developers are now fighting for their survival, exacerbating a crisis of confidence among potential buyers.

The State Council also said it would support the expansion of large-scale festivals and sporting events both on and offline, as well as an increase in spending on services involving catering and healthcare.

Infrastructure in rural areas will be improved to boost digital and green consumption, it added.

Officials told reporters they would "unleash consumption potential by optimising policy and institutional design" in the second half of the year.

Earlier on Monday the official manufacturing purchasing managers' index (PMI) -- a key measure of factory output -- came in at 49.3, below the 50-point mark that separates expansion and contraction, according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

July's reading was slightly higher than June's 49.0 figure and was better than forecast in a Bloomberg survey.

"The overall level of manufacturing prosperity continued to improve," NBS statistician Zhao Qinghe said in a statement.

The non-manufacturing PMI, which measures business sentiment in the services and construction sectors, fell to 51.5 in July from 53.2 in June, as activity in capital market services and real estate shrank.

"The data release showed mixed messages," Zhiwei Zhang, an analyst at Pinpoint Asset Management, wrote in a note, adding "it seems the economic momentum is still quite weak".

Massachusetts State Police informed earlier this week that a former White House chef was found dead after going missing while paddle boarding near the summer home of former United States president Barack Obama.

But the latest reports, first published by DailyMail.com, mentioned that details surrounding the 911 distress call have emerged and the call remains mysteriously omitted from official logs.

Reports have mentioned that authorities received a call that Campbell had fallen into the water and was unable to resurface at 7:46pm (local time).

While the call was added to the logs of the Edgartown Police Department, the critical information detailing the purpose of the call was left blank. Surprisingly, all other calls on that eventful night were properly documented.

Tafari Campbell, who was the Obama family's personal chef, was discovered dead in a big lake on the island of Martha's Vineyard by divers. Campbell, 45, was paddle boarding when he disappeared under the waves.

Obama purchased a multi-million dollar waterfront property on the northeast US island after leaving the White House. It's the same place where he often used to go on vacation with his family before and throughout his presidency.

The Massachusetts State Police said in a statement that they responded to "a call for a male paddle boarder who had gone into the water, appeared to briefly struggle to stay on the surface, and then submerged and did not resurface".

The body was found the next morning and identified later in the day after a search into the night.

US media reported that Campbell had worked as a sous chef in the White House before joining the Obamas as a personal cook.

Police said earlier this week on Monday that the former president and his wife Michelle Obama were not at home at the time of the accident.

The Obama family did not respond immediately, but a statement carried by several US media outlets mentioned that the Obamas called Campbell "a beloved part of our family" and said that their "hearts are broken that he's gone."

AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Friday (July 28) called out Indian Home Minister Amit Shah for reportedly questioning the release time of the sexual assault video of two Kuki women in the northeastern state of Manipur.

Shah said on Thursday (July 27) that a probe into the sexual assault of two women in the crisis-hit state, who were paraded naked by a group of men, will be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Shah said a total of seven cases linked to the violence in Manipur will be handled by CBI. The Centre has also requested the Supreme Court to shift these trials outside the state.

Media reports citing sources said that the one who allegedly recorded the video has been arrested and the mobile phone was also confiscated.

During an interaction with editors at his Atal Akshay Urja Bhavan office, Shah said that the recovery of the phone and its forensics would expose the "chain" of complicity.

He reportedly questioned the timing of the release of the video, as it said that the incident happened many days before, reportedly May 4, and was released just one day before the start of the Monsoon session of parliament.

In a report by Hindustan Times, Shah claimed that the initial probe into the retrieved device apparently suggested a conspiracy to corner the government.

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday (July 28) said Moscow is "carefully" examining proposals made by some African leaders to end the conflict in Ukraine amid reports of an intensive counteroffensive by Kyiv. On the second day of the Russia-Africa summit in Saint Petersburg, Putin said: "We respect your initiatives and we are examining them carefully."

"Previous mediation initiatives were monopolised by so-called advanced democracies. Now, Africa too is ready to help resolve problems that appear to be outside of its area of priorities," he said.

"The African continent is indeed becoming a new centre of power. Its political and economic role is growing exponentially. Everyone will have to take this reality into account. For example, let's look at the initiative by a number of African states on solving the Ukraine crisis, which is an acute problem, we are not shying away from reviewing it," Putin added.

Before Russia, an African group travelled to Ukraine and offered crisis mediation. They called for military de-escalation, security assurances for both parties and mutual acknowledgement of sovereignty.

The offer to mediate was rejected by Ukraine, saying it would freeze the conflict without ensuring that Russian troops leave Ukrainian soil. The Kremlin had also said earlier that the African proposals would be "very difficult to implement".

Putin says Russia 'carefully' examining African proposals to end Ukraine conflict

In a private dating group on Facebook, Renee flaunts herself to like-minded singles as a fit, adventurous Kizomba dancer who at 35 exudes "inner child vibes." But her main draw?

In a private dating group on Facebook, Renee flaunts herself to like-minded singles as a fit, adventurous Kizomba dancer who at 35 exudes "inner child vibes." But her main draw? She is unvaccinated. The Covid-19 pandemic may have receded, but dating apps, websites and social media groups still offer to unite vaccine-hating singles who believe debunked falsehoods such as that coronavirus jabs alter DNA or cause infertility. The trend underscores how anti-vaccine sentiment has become an entrenched identity for many who willfully resist or ignore scientific assertions that inoculations saved tens of millions of lives globally when the pandemic was raging. A prospective match's vaccination status determines compatibility not just for Renee, a self-employed Australian, but for many posting in "unvaxed singles" groups that have cropped up on Facebook. Dating decisions there are driven by chemistry but not science. In one closed group breached by AFP, many listed "no jabbies" as their top dating criteria, while others cheered anti-vaccine advocates as "pure blood freedom fighters." One meme popular in the group described their ideal partner: "She's curvy, funny, intelligent, unvaccinated." It demonstrates how the pandemic turned rejecting vaccines from a personal health decision to the way "people express their personal brand," said Timothy Caulfield, a professor at the University of Alberta in Canada. "It shows how high the walls of their echo chambers are. Being anti-vaccine has become an ideological flag -- a way to demonstrate which team you belong to," Caulfield told AFP. "It is less and less about science and more and more about the values being antivax signal." 'Swipe left' According to a 2022 survey by the Pew Research Center, about half of US adults who used a dating site or app said it was important to see the vaccination status on profiles. "Why is your vaccination status such a big deal? I've even seen it listed as a 'dealbreaker' on some profiles," said a post in a dating discussion group on the online messaging board Reddit. "The profiles I see most state the following: 'if you're vaccinated then please swipe left.'" Some comments in the group referred to vaccinated singles as people carrying "biological weapons," an apparent reference to the debunked claim the vaccinated spread "super strain" variants. Vaccine falsehoods often overlap with other types of misinformation, introducing believers to those espousing the QAnon conspiracy theory and anti-LGBTQ narratives. "Studies have consistently shown that if a person is anti-vaccine – or unvaccinated – you can make a strong guess about that person's positions on a host of other issues," Caulfield said. Spreading falsehoods can also be profitable. The Florida-based Wellness Company sells a detoxification supplement that it claims counteracts the harmful effects of coronavirus jabs, destroying spike proteins to get back "that pre-Covid feeling." But experts and public health authorities told AFP's fact-checkers there is no evidence the nearly $65 supplement does that. The same company also backs a dating website for unvaccinated people called Unjected. Before being accepted, its members are required to have their "vaccination status certified by a medical professional," according to the website. In 2021, US media reported the Unjected app, dubbed as the "Tinder for anti-vaxers," was removed from Apple's App Store over Covid-19 misinformation. A slew of similar apps for unvaccinated singles are available on the Google Play Store. One such platform is called Unjabbed, whose user reviews expressed concern about bugs and phone hacking attempts after the app was downloaded. 'Tall, dark, handsome' At the height of the pandemic in 2021, conventional online dating platforms including Tinder, Hinge and OkCupid sought to boost vaccinations. As part of a White House-backed effort, many platforms allowed users to create badges displaying vaccination status, with OkCupid calling the inoculated the "new tall, dark and handsome." Users who were vaccinated or planned to be saw a spike in matches and engagement, OkCupid said in a blog, adding the "vaccine is really helping people find love." But any future inoculation drive could be jeopardized by anti-vaccine sentiment, which appears resilient even as the pandemic ebbs and travel restrictions are lifted around the world. The allure of finding an unvaccinated partner is reinforced by false social media posts sharing unfounded fears that vaccines can be "shed" or passed onto people through body fluids, threatening fertility. "The only real utility a dating platform like this could have is finding a partner that aligns with your 'medical freedom' views," Katrine Wallace, an epidemiologist and assistant professor at the University of Illinois Chicago, told AFP. "There is no clinical reason to do so."

Another case has been reported where important government e-mails are getting delivered to the wrong address because of a typo. Britain's defence ministry has launched a probe after officials unintentionally forwarded secret emails to Mali, a close Russian ally, due to a typing error.

The issue of the wrong address was first reported by The Times, which further mentioned that a "small number" of emails were sent to the African country because of the accidental omission of an "i" from an email address.

The mails that were meant for the Pentagon were sent to an address ending with the West African country's ".ml" domain, instead of the US military's ".mil".

Mali was among the African nations that will get free grain from Russia as per a promised made by President Vladimir Putin. At a Russia-Africa summit in St Petersburg, Putin said, "We will be ready to provide Burkina Faso, Zimbabwe, Mali, Somalia, Central African Republic and Eritrea with 25-50,000 tonnes of free grain each in the next three to four months."

Ukraine has apparently launched a major offensive as the Russian army said on Wednesday (July 26) that it had repelled a Ukrainian attack involving several hundred soldiers near the town of Orikhiv in the south. In the past few weeks, Ukraine claimed that its counter-offensive is underway and also that the nation was making advances on all fronts despite consistent Russian attacks.

The highly anticipated counteroffensive began after Ukraine stockpiled Western weapons and built up its offensive forces.

It added that Ukraine "conducted a massive attack by the forces of three battalions reinforced by tanks".

The ministry further said that "all attacks of the Armed Force of Ukraine were repelled. Positions were held".

A report by CNN mentioned, citing two US officials, that Ukraine has committed more forces to its counteroffensive in the southeast.

Russia repels major attack near Zaporizhzhia as Ukraine resumes 'intensive offensive'

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Thursday (July 27) that New Zealand can engage with the AUKUS weapons development and procurement project anytime it wants as the door was open.

Blinken has raised the possibility of New Zealand and other partners engaging or joining this elite grouping. A pack which angered China that termed it 'destabilising' for the region.

"The door's very much open for New Zealand and other partners to engage as they see appropriate going forward," Blinken said.

"We've long worked together on the most important national security issues. And so as we further develop AUKUS, as I said, the door is open to engagement," he added.

Blinken's notable remark came a day after New Zealand Prime Minister Chris Hipkins said Wellington was "open to conversations" about a possible role in AUKUS.

New Zealand has been nuclear-free since the mid-1980s and Hipkins said that they would consider it so long as it did not relate to the development of nuclear-powered submarines.

Instead, officials appear to be eying cooperation on defence technologies such as cyber, artificial intelligence and hypersonic weapons, which fall under the AUKUS agreement's so-called "pillar two".

Blinken was in New Zealand for just over a day. His arrival in the island nation was part of a three-country visit to the Pacific.

He met with New Zealand Prime Minister Chris Hipkins and Foreign Minister Nanaia Mahuta and will further travel to Australia on Thursday where the largest Australia-U.S. military exercise is due to begin.

Recently, accusations were made against New Zealand of giving importance to its trading relationship with China ahead of its friendships with fellow Five Eyes spy group members the United States, Britain, Canada and Australia.

Analysts have said that overall consumer sentiment in China is down, but the case is quite different when it comes to condoms as Durex maker Reckitt said on Wednesday (July 26) that the trend is not stopping people from buying more and more condoms, a report by news agency Reuters mentioned.

Recently, Albert Park, who is the chief economist at the Asian Development Bank, said that China's cautious consumer confidence has been a "dampener" for its fragile recovery.

China on Monday reported second-quarter GDP numbers, which largely missed expectations. The data showed that China's economy grew 6.3 per cent from a year ago in the quarter ending June. Meanwhile, retail sales for June increased by 3.1 per cent.

On Tuesday, the British consumer goods giant Unilever said that because of a drop in China's property market and exports, consumer sentiment is at a historic low.

Contrary to the trends, Reckitt reported earnings results on Wednesday. It said like-for-like net revenue growth in its health business was 8.8%.

The growth was led in part by its "Intimate Wellness" brands, which include K-Y lubricant.

In China, Reckitt saw "the benefit of re-opening post-COVID-related lockdowns" and it grew by high single digits globally.

While talking about the growth, CEO Nicandro Durante said that Reckitt is launching innovations, such as new materials for condoms, and that people "are enjoying the nightlife".
