Pope Francis on Wednesday (August 2) arrived in Lisbon, the capital city of Portugal, to attend a gathering of a million young people from across the world for a major Catholic festival. The plane carrying the 86-year-old pontiff landed at a military airport in the Portuguese capital at 9:45 am (0845 GMT). But there's anger...there's anguish.

Pope has not come alone, a streak of controversies has also followed as this visit has been shadowed by the Church's sexual abuse scandal which was uncovered six months ago.

Sex abuse scandal

A 500-page report in February revealed that at least 4,815 children were sexually abused by members of the Portuguese Catholic Church over the past 70 years.

The accused members were mostly priests and the commission investigating the issue said in a report that the findings are the "tip of the iceberg".

At the time of the release of the report, child psychiatrist Pedro Strecht, who headed the commission, said that the probing authorities want to pay a "sincere tribute to those who were abuse victims during their childhood and dared to give a voice to silence" and he said that the data is heartbreaking and "much more than a statistic".

According to the child psychiatrist, the 4,815 cases were the "absolute minimum" number of victims of sexual abuse by clergy members in Portugal since 1950. He said that "these numbers are just the tip of the iceberg".

The report has mentioned that most perpetrators (around 77 per cent) were priests and 57 per cent of the victims were men.

Strecht said that they were abused in Catholic schools, churches, priests' homes, and confessionals, among other locations.

The majority of the sexual abuses took place when the children were aged 10-14, with the youngest victim being just two-years-old.

While Pope is visiting the Portuguese city for World Youth Day, which is a global gathering of young Catholics, the world is talking about the sex scandal.

Details about the scandal impacted the image of the institution and forced the Portuguese Roman Catholic Church to apologise to the victims.

In fact, a poll in July by Lisbon's Catholic University of Portugal found that 68 per cent of all Portuguese felt the Church's image had deteriorated in the aftermath of the sex scandal.

When the report was published, Jose Ornelas, the head of the Bishops' Conference, said that Portuguese bishops would look into implementing "more efficient and appropriate mechanisms" to prevent future abuses.

The investigating committee recommended that the Church should denounce all alleged abuses, provide psychosocial support to victims and continue the investigation into the issue.

Pope says 'anguished cry' must be heard

After arriving in Lisbon, the Pope said that the "anguished cry" of victims of clerical sexual abuse must be heard.

While addressing the clergy at Lisbon's vast Jeronimos Monastery, he said some people viewed the Church "with disappointment and anger" due to "the scandals that have marred her face".

He added that these scandals "call us to a humble and ongoing purification, starting with the anguished cry of the victims, who must always be accepted and listened to".

The Portuguese Bishops' Conference and a local organising committee said that Pope will meet abuse victims privately. However, this is not a part of his official programme but is believed to be highly significant.

World Youth Day

World Youth Day is an event for young people organised by the Catholic Church. It was initiated by Pope John Paul II in 1985 and this is the fourth such event Francis will preside over since he became Pope.

Along with the Pope, a sea of young Catholics have also arrived in Lisbon from around the World for this festival, which is held every two or three years in a different city.

Local reports have mentioned that the place where Pope is staying - the Vatican embassy - was surrounded by young believers, who jumped, sang and waved their country's flag. Young Catholics from nearly every country in the world have registered for the event.

As quoted by the news agency Reuters, 20-year-old Carlos Hernandez said that World Youth Day "is a sign of faith and union in which all of us get together for a cause. It's very emotional".

Francis has implemented several changes in the Church since his election in 2013 and has been pushing forward with a series of reforms that he hopes will leave a lasting legacy.

However, experts have said that he must strike a fine balance between appealing to more liberal believers and offending conservatives by empowering women and making the church more accepting and less judgmental of some groups, especially the LGBTQ+ community.

The gunman who stormed a synagogue in Pittsburgh's Jewish community and killed 11 worshippers has been sentenced to death on Wednesday (August 2). The gunman, identified as Robert Bowers, was accused of perpetrating the deadliest anti-semitic attack in US history and was convicted of 63 counts, including 11 counts of obstruction of free exercise of religious beliefs resulting in death. Several were injured.

The jury found him guilty of dozens of federal hate crimes in the trial held at the U.S. District Court in Pittsburgh in western Pennsylvania in June. During the first phase of the sentencing portion of the trial which was around two weeks ago, the jury found Bowers to be eligible for the death penalty. He was found guilty on all counts on June 16.

His defence lawyers argued that he suffered from life-long mental illness and was delusional. However, they did not dispute that he planned and carried out the attack.

The 12-member federal jury unanimously ruled that the 50-year-old Bowers should be executed for the October 27 mass shooting, US-based media reports published the details of the ruling.

According to media outlets, a defence attorney for the shooter said there is no justification for the attack. The attorney, however, urged the jury to "consider mercy" and give him jail time for life.

Defence attorney Judy Clarke, quoted by reports, said on Monday: "We can't rewind the clock and make it such that this senseless crime never happened. All we can really do is make the right decision going forward. And we are asking you to make the right decision, and that is life."

Time to become spy: China asks citizens to join nation's fight against espionage

U.S. officials want to tinker with the mix of chemicals fuelling missiles and rockets to gain an advantage in the Pacific by increasing the range of its front line munitions so that the U.S. forces can operate further away from China.

The Pentagon and Congress are looking at a retrofit that could extend ranges for some current weapons as much as 20 per cent by using more powerful propellants and lighter warheads, two congressional aides and two U.S. officials said, who spoke to Reuters under the condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to speak publicly.

Last week, the Senate revealed bill language earmarking at least $13 million to plan, expand and manufacture chemical compounds that can be used to propel missiles, or replace the explosive material in warheads, known as "energetics".

Although a fraction of the $886 billion defence bill making its way through Congress, the funding starts a process that could ultimately lead to billions of dollars of new spending on munitions.

The Democrat-controlled Senate and Republican-held House of Representatives still need to negotiate final funding levels for the concept, but there is general agreement on the bipartisan effort to deter China.

The "distance in the Indo-Pacific and sheer size of (China's) Navy means the U.S. needs more ship-killing missiles that can reach distant targets," Representative Mike Gallagher told Reuters. China views the U.S. in the Pacific as a threat, ramping up its own military presence in response.

"Unfortunately, the Pentagon has grown complacent using 1940s-era energetics and neglected advanced energetics like CL-20 that are necessary to increasing the range and lethality of our force. Every foot farther a missile can travel is a foot farther an American service member is from danger."

CL-20 programme

Pending final approval in Congress, the bill would set in motion a Pentagon programme to try to add more range to existing weapons using chemicals such as China Lake Compound #20, also known as CL-20, aides and people familiar with the plan told Reuters.

Developed by a government laboratory in California back in the 1980s, CL-20 is one of the most discussed chemical compounds under consideration, one senior defence official said. Congress has gravitated to studies, like the one published in 2021, that said repowering a rocket with CL-20 — along with other changes — could extend its range by about 20 per cent.

A paper by the Energetics Technology Center said new energetic materials give a 400-pound bomb "the same lethality as a current 1000-pound bomb," adding China makes "CL-20 on an industrial scale and built it into weapons systems."

Northrop Grumman Corp is one of the main makers of CL-20 in the United States. The other main rocket motor maker is Aerojet Rocketdyne which was purchased last week by L3Harris Technologies.

The Senate earmarked funds would be used to establish an office for energetic materials within the Department of Defense answering to the Deputy Secretary of Defense Kathleen Hicks, according to the legislation.

The office would be a coordinating body across the Army, Navy and Air Force to cut through institutional red tape.

"This relatively modest investment for energetics is a meaningful and important initiative," said Tom Karako, a weapons expert at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

Karako said the cost of re-powering or using new explosive chemicals in weapons in the U.S. inventory could be in the billions of dollars, adding that the figure was heavily dependent on which weapons were re-powered, and how many were modified or purchased.

Iain Overton, executive director with the nonprofit Action on Armed Violence, said the race to tweak already lethal weapons was not progress.

"History is said to repeat itself, and in the sense that arms races always end badly," he said. "Does bigger, more deadly weapons make us safer? The answer is a resounding: no. In the last decade, when explosive weapons were used in populated areas, 90% of those reported killed or injured globally were civilians."

The House version of the annual defense bill requires the Pentagon to run a CL-20 pilot program that switches out either the explosive or propellant in three existing weapons.

The House version does not name any weapons, but Bob Kavetsky with the Energetics Technology Center said candidates for the new chemicals include the Lockheed Martin-made long range anti-ship missiles and extended range air-to-surface missiles. Other candidates include Harpoon anti-ship missile made by Boeing and Javelin anti-tank weapons made by Lockheed and RTX.

"History is said to repeat itself, and in the sense that arms races always end badly," he said. "Does bigger, more deadly weapons make us safer? The answer is a resounding: no. In the last decade, when explosive weapons were used in populated areas, 90% of those reported killed or injured globally were civilians." The House version of the annual defense bill requires the Pentagon to run a CL-20 pilot program that switches out either the explosive or propellant in three existing weapons. A Delhi court on Wednesday (August 2) ordered to de-seal Uphaar Cinema hall, in which 59 people lost their lives and more than 100 were injured because of a tragic blaze in 1997. The court said that the sealing of the property would not serve any purpose.

The Uphaar Cinema fire was one of the worst fire tragedies in Indian history. The cinema hall is located in New Delhi's Green Park area. The fire broke out on June 13, 1997 during the three o'clock screening of the movie Border. The cinema premises was sealed and has not been in use ever since.

The court said that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Delhi Police and Association of Victims of Uphaar Tragedy (AVUT) president Neelam Krishnamoorthy have already given their "no objection" to the Supreme Court to return the theatre to the applicant.

The application was moved by Ansal Theatres and Club Hotels Private Ltd. The former directors - Sushil Ansal and Gopal Ansal - of this group were convicted in the fire tragedy case.

The judge said, "Since the trial has reached finality, absolutely no purpose would be served to keep the property sealed. The application is thereby allowed and property in question be de-sealed and released to the applicant being the rightful owner."

Krishnamoorthy's submission was rejected by the judge. It sought appropriate action against the applicant for filing a copy of a judgment of the Supreme Court in the case but deliberately, misguided the court.

Russian President Vladimir Putin asked his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Wednesday (August 2) to help Moscow export its grain to African countries to evade crisis because of food shortage. During the call, Putin also reaffirmed that Russia would return to the deal "as soon as the West actually fulfils all the obligations to Russia" contained within it.

Russia reaffirms stance on grain deal, continues strikes on key Ukrainian ports

A black bear, said to be "extremely agitated", was shot and killed by Alaska police in an East Anchorage neighbourhood on Sunday (July 31) evening. Police said that the bear was charging at people.

The Anchorage Police Department issued a statement warning locals of an agitated black bear in the area.

Police wrote: "Good evening, everyone! We are having Alaska problems. It's a quarter to 10 pm on this finally sunny Sunday evening (7/30/23) and we are currently occupied with an extremely agitated black bear in the neighbourhoods near Baxter and Northern Lights."

"You will see police in the area. Please use extreme caution if you are going to be outside. It would be a great idea to not leave garage doors and people doors to your home propped open right now," it added.

But later, the police said it arrived at the scene and eventually killed the black bear.

The authorities confirmed it on a Facebook post: "The bear was dispatched last night as it was charging people and causing a public safety risk".

The bear charged a man and his son near a wooded area near a lake, said Dave Battle, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game's Anchorage area biologist.

"The bear stopped about 20 yards in front of the people. The man had a gun but did not shoot the bear because it retreated into the woods after the charge," Battle was quoted as saying by the Anchorage Daily News.

Battle said the bear weighed more than 400 pounds and didn't have any sign of prior injuries.

This incident brings Anchorage's tally of bear deaths to 16 so far this year.

According to Battle, the total includes 13 black bears killed by responding agencies and three by citizens who reported defending their lives or property.

He said that the tally so far is "average to high" as last year a total of 14 black bears were killed by agencies and six more were killed by citizens.

At least six people were injured, two of them seriously, in a shooting incident in Israel's Ma'ale Adumim city on Tuesday (August 1). Palestinian health officials said one Palestinian was killed by Israeli forces after committing a shooting attack, which took place outside a shopping mall in the occupied West Bank.

According to Israeli emergency services, two of the six Israelis were in serious condition. They said that one of the victims was 14 years old.

A Border Police officer heard gunfire and shouting near the settlement's shopping mall. They rushed to the scene to search for the "terrorist".

"The terrorist started shooting at the officer," police said. They further added that he engaged and killed the gunman.

Israeli paramedic Oren Brill said, "We went into the restaurant where we saw the victim lying fully conscious with gunshot wounds to his upper body."

"We provided him with life-saving treatment and rapidly evacuated him to a hospital in a serious condition. Following an initial assessment in the trauma room, he was transferred to the operating room," Brill added.

Video of the incident circulating on social media showed the shooter still on the ground. He was wearing a bright yellow vest and blood appeared to seep down the sidewalk beneath his body.

The news agency Reuters reported that the Hamas militant organisation, which governs the Gaza Strip, said the attack was a response to Israeli officials ascending to Temple Mount in Jerusalem last week.

The legal status of the religious site, known to Judaism as the Temple Mount and in Islam as the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, is a recurring flashpoint in Israeli-Palestinian relations.

Israel: Six injured in shooting incident in Ma'ale Adumim, suspect shot dead

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said that after talks with his Croatian counterpart on Monday (July 31), Kyiv and Zagreb have agreed on the use of Croatian ports to export Ukrainian grain.

Both nations have agreed on the possibility of using Croatian ports on the Danube and the Adriatic Sea.

This comes days after Russia suspended its participation in the Black Sea grain export deal, and said it will only return to the deal if Moscow's conditions are met.

The move deprived Ukraine of a channel to safely export its agricultural products during the ongoing war.

After meeting Grlic Radman in Kyiv, Kuleba said: "Now we will work to establish the most efficient routes to these ports and make the most of this opportunity."

"Every contribution to unblocking export, every door opened is a real, effective contribution to the world's food security. I am grateful to Croatia for its constructive assistance," he said.

Ukraine and Croatia agree on use of Croatian ports for grain exports

Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has subsided, but humanity will always remember how it suffered when the deadly virus was raging, killing millions and leaving a million others with symptoms of long-Covid.

A new UK-based survey done on parents sheds light upon how half of all kids suffered a setback to their emotional and social development during the first year of the pandemic.

Another key finding of the report was about how "half of the families" saw no change in their labour market status during the first year of the pandemic, "including a third of households where all parents remained employed and working throughout".

The survey also says that younger siblings are more likely to have been negatively affected than their older brothers and sisters.

A report by the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) revealed that children belonging to all economic backgrounds in England were affected.

As per the research, children aged four to seven were significantly more likely to have suffered a deterioration in their skills as compared to those between 12 to 15 of age.

The research by the IFS and UCL Institute of Education stated that the social and emotional development of just one in six children improved over the same period.

Part of the report read, "The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted many aspects of children’s lives, with impacts on their social and emotional development as well as their educational attainment."

The report stated that school closures increased "social and emotional difficulties and lack of contact with friends and extended family left some children without a trusted adult to turn to".

The report is based on a survey of 6,095 parents living in England with children aged four to 16. The parents answered 13 questions about how their kids have been behaving after the Covid pandemic.

As quoted by The Guardian, Andrew McKendrick, a research economist at IFS and one of the authors of the report, said: "During the COVID-19 pandemic, children from all backgrounds saw their social and emotional skills worsen considerably."

"Children lived through many changes during these years: school closures, lack of contact with friends and family, and potentially devastating severe illness or death among loved ones," McKendrick added.

He said that the research shows that another important driver of children's declining skills was the economic disruptions experienced by their parents, whether or not those disruptions led to a large income loss.

Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has subsided, but humanity will always remember how it suffered when the deadly virus was raging, killing millions and leaving a million others with symptoms of long-Covid.

Part of the report read, "The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted many aspects of children’s lives, with impacts on their social and emotional development as well as their educational attainment." The report stated that school closures increased "social and emotional difficulties and lack of contact with friends and extended family left some children without a trusted adult to turn to". The report is based on a survey of 6,095 parents living in England with children aged four to 16. The parents answered 13 questions about how their kids have been behaving after the Covid pandemic. She died in 1991. DNA under fingernails helped identify killer after over 30 years

British energy giant BP on Tuesday announced a drop in second-quarter net profit as oil and gas prices retreated from peaks reached a year earlier following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Profit after tax plunged to $1.8 billion in the three months to the end of June compared with $9.3 billion in the second quarter last year, BP said in a statement, mirroring hefty falls across the sector.

"Our financial performance is impacted by fluctuating prices of oil, gas and refined products," it added.

Energy prices soared a year ago following the Ukraine invasion by key producer Russia, sending global inflation to the highest levels in decades while providing record profits for oil and gas companies.

Russia cut gas shipments to Europe while oil markets were also rocked by supply concerns.

Gas and oil prices have since pulled back but remain at elevated levels.

Shareholder rewards

Despite the slump in profits, BP said it was hiking its dividend and returning $1.5 billion to shareholders by repurchasing stock.

"This reflects confidence in our performance and the outlook for cash flow," chief executive Bernard Looney said in the earnings statement.

BP's share price advanced 1.9 percent in early London trading following the earnings update.

"BP's move to boost shareholder returns is in line with moves by some of the other leading oil producers as they focus on ensuring investors benefit from the strength of cash flow the industry is currently enjoying," said Steve Clayton, head of equity funds at Hargreaves Lansdown.

Natural gas prices have pulled back sharply as European countries found new suppliers, built up reserves and experienced a mild winter.

Oil prices have also tumbled, partly on fears of falling demand as the global economy slows, with major consumer China's post-Covid recovery stumbling.

Profits remain hefty, however, as oil and gas firms stay focused on pumping out fossil fuels while pivoting toward cleaner energy.

The UK government said Monday that it would issue "hundreds" of new oil and gas licences in the North Sea to secure energy reserves while still aiming for net zero carbon emissions by 2050.

The announcement has angered environmental groups.

"Handing out new oil and gas licences will do nothing to improve our energy security," Charlie Kronick, senior climate advisor at Greenpeace UK, said Tuesday.

He added in a statement that it would instead allow "companies like BP and Shell to rake in even more money for their shareholders".
