India: Encounter in Jammu & Kashmir's Kulgam; 3 security personnel injured

International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said on Friday (August 4) that it has not found mines or explosives on the rooftops of reactors and turbine halls of Ukraine's Russian-held Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant.

The United Nations nuclear watchdog visited the site for inspection after claims made by Ukraine about the presence of mines.

According to the Ukrainian military, "external objects similar to explosive devices were placed on the outer roof of the third and fourth reactors" at the site.

But IAEA said that experts "have observed no mines or explosives on the rooftops of Unit 3 and Unit 4 reactor buildings and the turbine halls at Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, after having been given access yesterday afternoon".

After repeatedly calling for unrestricted access to the plant, "the team had unimpeded access to the rooftops of the two reactor units and could also clearly view the rooftops of the turbine halls," it added.

The watchdog said that the agency experts saw anti-personnel mines located in a buffer zone between the site's internal and external perimeter barriers on July 23.

It added that after calls for unrestricted access to the plant, "the team had unimpeded access to the rooftops of the two reactor units and could also clearly view the rooftops of the turbine halls".

It also mentioned that it will pursue its requests to visit the roofs of the other four units at the plant.

IAEA head Rafael Mariano Grossi said that "timely, independent and objective reporting of facts on the ground is crucial to continue the IAEA's efforts to support nuclear safety and security during the military conflict in the country."

Russia on Friday (August 4) claimed that it thwarted a drone attack on its naval base there with two sea drones, but a video shows a moment when a sea drone headed directly towards a Russian ship near the port of Novorossiysk. In that particular region, explosions have been heard overnight.

The news agency Reuters reported citing two sources familiar with the matter that a Russian warship was seriously damaged in an overnight Ukrainian naval drone attack.

The video has been shared by a source at Ukraine's security service. In the video, a drone can be seen moving across the Black Sea and approaching the Russian vessel.

Watch I Video shows Russian warship being towed after sea drone attack by Ukraine

Archaeologists have reconstructed a 9,000-year-old necklace which was unearthed in 2018 with a grave of a child at an ancient settlement in the Middle East.

A well-constructed cist-type grave was discovered at Ba'ja, a Neolithic village (7,400–6,800 BCE) in a location that is now Jordan.

The child, believed to be eight-year-old, was buried in a fetal position underneath multiple grave layers and was covered with over 2,500 beads found on the chest and neck.

An international team led by archaeologist Hala Alarashi from Côte d'Azur University in France said that based on the shape of the child's jaw, it was probably a girl.

A double perforated stone pendant and an engraved mother-of-pearl ring were also discovered among the concentration of beads.

In the study titled Threads of memory: Reviving the ornament of a dead child at the Neolithic village of Ba`ja (Jordan), published in the online journal PLOS One on Wednesday (August 2), experts described how they reconstructed the artefact.

The authors said that the reconstruction results exceeded their expectations as they revealed an imposing multi-row necklace of complex structure and attractive design.

The study's authors wrote that "through multiple lines of evidence, we suggest that the necklace was created at Ba'ja, although significant parts of beads were made from exotic shells and stones, including fossil amber".

The researchers have said that the ornament indicates that the child had significant social status.

The authors said the "abundance of beads composing the necklace, which is a common trait of ornaments found in other burials at Ba'ja, hints at wealth and prosperity".

"Adornments with a large number of beads—over 2,500—are unprecedented among contemporary Neolithic villages in the Levant," the authors said.

According to the study, the retrieval of such an ornament from life and its attribution to a young dead child highlights the significant social status of this individual.

"Beyond the symbolic functions related to identity, the necklace is believed to have played a key role in performing the inhumation rituals, understood as a public event gathering families, relatives, and people from other villages," the study mentioned.

'Ornament of dead child': Reconstruction of 9,000-year-old necklace reveals details

James Webb Space Telescope of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has released several stunning images of space ever since it was launched in December 2021. But a recent image has left the users baffled, as it has posed a giant cosmic question...quite literally.

NASA shared a breathtaking image taken by James Webb in which a pair of actively forming young stars, known as Herbig-Haro 46/47, can be seen in high-resolution near-infrared light.

NASA noted in a statement that "Herbig-Haro 46/47 is an important object to study because it is relatively young – only a few thousand years old".

As the space agency elaborated on the details of the image it shared, users were quick to focus on a strange celestial object after zooming in towards the bottom centre of the infrared photo. They found the shape of a "question mark".

NASA didn't mention anything about the so-called question mark. But to get a better understanding, Space.com spoke to some experts.

As quoted by the outlet, representatives of the Space Telescope Science Institute, which manages the telescope's science operations, said that "it is probably a distant galaxy, or potentially interacting galaxies (their interactions may have caused the distorted question mark shape)".

And the institute said that since it appears red in the observation, it's quite far away.

This giant cosmic 'question mark' in space needs answers. What is it really?

India on Thursday (August 3) responded to Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's recent comment that Islamabad is willing to talk and discuss "serious matters" if the "neighbour" also does so. Sharif had also noted that "war is no more an option".

ndia's External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said during his weekly briefing that India also wants normal ties with all its neighbouring countries, including Pakistan. However, it is dependent on Islamabad to create an environment for such an engagement.

Bagchi said, "We have seen reports regarding comments by the Pakistan prime minister on this issue. India's clear and consistent position on this is well-known."

"We desire normal neighbourly relations with all our neighbours including Pakistan. For this an environment free of terror and hostility is imperative," he added.

In his remarks, Sharif said that Pakistan has nothing against anybody, we have to look after ourselves and build our nation. Even with our neighbour, we are prepared to talk provided that they are serious in discussing matters."

In the last 76 years, India and Pakistan have fought three wars - 1947, 1965 and 1999 - which led to a complex and largely hostile relationship between the two nuclear powers.

India's clear and consistent position on this is well-known." "We desire normal neighbourly relations with all our neighbours including Pakistan. For this an environment free of terror and hostility is imperative," he added. Even with our neighbour, we are prepared to talk provided that they are serious in discussing matters." In the last 76 years, India and Pakistan have fought three wars - 1947, 1965 and 1999 - which led to a complex and largely hostile relationship between the two nuclear powers. There have been several instances when tensions escalated at the India–Pakistan border, which is one of the most militarised international boundaries in the world. A stabbing incident in a South Korean town on Thursday (August 3) left at least one person dead, and over a dozen injured, news agency Reuters reported.

Police and local media reported that a man rammed his car into passers-by, he then jumped out of the vehicle and went on a stabbing spree.

A man drove a car onto a pedestrian walkway and went on a stabbing rampage at a department store in Seongnam, just south of Seoul, the Yonhap news agency said citing police officials.

The incident took place near the Seohyeon subway station in Bundang, which is about 20 kilometres southeast of Seoul.

The National Police Agency told news agency AFP that the suspect "had been arrested at the scene". The police told Yonhap that when the suspect was detained, he made some "incomprehensible statements".

Local reports have mentioned that the suspect appeared to be in his twenties. He stabbed nine people and wounded five others with his vehicle. According to a Yonhap report, at least eight of the stabbing victims are in critical condition.

Witnesses told the South Korean news agency that the suspect wore a black outfit and sunglasses, and he brandished a knife estimated to be around 50 to 60 centimetres long.

Stabbing incident on July 21

The incident happened around two weeks after a similar attack killed one person and injured three in the South Korean capital on July 21.

Such stabbing incidents are quite unusual in South Korea as official statistics revealed that the nation is typically an extremely safe country, with a murder rate of 1.3 per 100,000 people in 2021.

Meanwhile, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the United States has 7.8 homicide deaths per 100,000 people.

South Korea: One reported dead, several injured in stabbing, vehicle ramming near Seoul; suspect arrested

Imran Khan, the former prime minister of Pakistan, said in an interview that the military of the South Asian nation is frightened of the elections scheduled later this year.

In crisis-hit Pakistan, general elections are scheduled to be held in less than 60 days after the dissolution of the National Assembly, which will be dissolved on August 13.

During the interview with BBC HARDtalk published on Thursday (August 3), Khan said that "fascists" are leading the country into the "dark ages".

Khan was ousted in a parliamentary vote of confidence last year, and ever since, the cricket hero turned politician has been embroiled in a string of court cases and several key leaders and members of his party have also been arrested besides himself since the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) launched protests and rallies against the government.

According to him, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) is "the only party that was not created by military dictators" and is still intact.

Experts and political analysts have said that Khan was ousted because he fell out with the powerful military, which tends to decide who will rule the 220-million South Asian nation. It was also said that during the period of time when Khan was becoming the mainstay in the Pakistani political area, he had the backing of the army.

During the interview, the 70-year-old said, "How come, despite the establishment openly going against us, trying to dismantle us, how come after we are out of government, we won 30 out of 37 by-elections?"

The former prime minister said, "Normally, it happens when you're out of power for quite a while. But instead, what happened was the party's popularity kept growing" as he noted that the establishment had hoped that his removal from power would weaken the party.

He said, "They have tried everything. They have put 10,000 people in jail, including women and peaceful protesters. And worse, they have tortured people."

Pakistan: Imran Khan says military afraid of election; 'fascists' leading nation into 'dark ages'

A police operation targeting criminal gangs in slums areas in Rio de Janeiro killed at least nine people on Wednesday (August 2), authorities said. This is the latest in a series of deadly security force raids across Brazil in which at least 45 have been killed, including 14 in Sao Paulo state and 19 in the northeastern state of Bahia.

According to Rio state police, officers had returned fire after coming under attack during a raid on a meeting by organised crime leaders. The meeting was apparently in the Complexo da Penha group of favelas, which is on the city's north side.

The police said in a statement that during the operation, one officer was wounded but is stable in hospital.

They said in a statement: "A clash occurred when police teams came under attack by gunmen at the scene. Eleven suspects were wounded" and taken to the hospital. Nine of them died of their injuries."

Police said that Fiel and Du Leme are among those who were killed. They were the leaders of the impoverished Juramento and Chatuba neighbourhoods, known locally as 'favelas'.

Brazil's Operation Shield: At least nine killed in new clash between police and gangs

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's mansion was covered with black fabric by activists from Greenpeace on Thursday (August 3) protesting against fossil fuel licenses.

The activists climbed onto the roof of Sunak's mansion in Yorkshire, calling it a protest for his support of a "major expansion of North Sea oil and gas drilling", they were later arrested.

Earlier this week, Sunak gave a go-ahead to hundreds of new oil and gas licences in the North Sea — a decision that has angered the environmentalists.

Greenpeace UK climate campaigner Philip Evans said, "We desperately need our prime minister to be a climate leader, not a climate arsonist."

"Just as wildfires and floods wreck homes and lives around the world, Sunak is committing to a massive expansion of oil and gas drilling," Evans added.

Greenpeace posted a video of the incident on its social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter. In the video, activists were seen climbing on the roof of Sunak's mansion in Richmond, northern England. They covered it with black sheets.

Greenpeace UK climate campaigner Philip Evans said, "We desperately need our prime minister to be a climate leader, not a climate arsonist." "Just as wildfires and floods wreck homes and lives around the world, Sunak is committing to a massive expansion of oil and gas drilling," Evans added. Greenpeace posted a video of the incident on its social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter.
