The Israeli army said on Wednesday (Oct 11) that an "error" was behind reports of a suspected "aerial infiltration" from Lebanon.

"There are no launches at this point from Lebanon. There are no alerts," army spokesman Daniel Hagari said in a televised statement as he ruled out any major incident near the border.

"This has been an error that we are looking into... We will check whether it's a technical malfunction or a human error," he added.

Earlier in the evening, reports emerged that rocket sirens were activated in the northern part of the nation over suspicion of aerial infiltration from Lebanon's side.

In a post on X, Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said that a report was received regarding a "suspected infiltration from Lebanon into Israeli airspace".

A Welsh woman choked to death during a marshmallow-eating challenge, and the tragedy is that she is not the first person to die during such a stunt, media reported.

Identified in UK-based media outlets as Natalie Buss, the woman died at a South Wales rugby club fundraiser event at Beddau RFC in Rhondda Cynon Taf.

Buss, 37, was supposed to stuff as many marshmallows in her mouth as she could as part of the stunt.

But, while doing so, the mother of two collapsed on Saturday night after choking and was later pronounced dead.

Hamas launches multiple rockets towards Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv: Report

Humanity will always remember the coronavirus pandemic which has subsided now but caused agony while it was raging, killing millions and leaving a million others with symptoms of long-Covid. But are we ready to face such pandemics again?

A French virologist has raised concerns over his discovery of viruses frozen thousands of years ago, but remain alive. He said that those frozen viruses might re-emerge to threaten humanity. If it happens, it will be because of global warming due to the result of climate change.

Virologist Jean-Michel Claverie found viruses frozen for as long as 50,000 years in places such as the Siberian permafrost which remain infectious.

Bloomberg reported on Monday (Oct 9) that in an interview, at his laboratory in the Luminy campus of Aix-Marseille University, France, Claverie said: "With climate change, we are used to thinking of dangers coming from the south." He referred to the spread of vector-borne diseases from warmer tropical regions.

He added, "Now, we realise there might be some danger coming from the north as the permafrost thaws and frees microbes, bacteria and viruses."

Global average temperatures from January to September were 1.4 degrees Celsius higher than 1850-1900, which is almost breaching the 1.5C warming goal of the 2015 Paris Agreement, the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) said in a report.

That threshold was the more ambitious target of the accord and is seen as essential to avoiding the most catastrophic consequences of climate change.

The January-September average global temperature was 0.05C higher than the same nine-month period in 2016, the warmest year recorded so far.

The El Nino phenomenon, which warms waters in the southern Pacific and stokes hotter weather beyond, is likely to see 2023 becoming the hottest year on record in the next three months.

Claverie's documentation of viruses raised concerns that a rise in global temperature will release dormant pathogens, which are a lesser explored danger.

Top 10 world news: Rockets fired from Gaza towards Israel, Putin says Israel conflict 'example' of US failure

Floods sparked by record October rain hit parts of southern Myanmar on Monday, inundating roads and fields and sending residents fleeing for higher ground.

On Sunday authorities reported that 200 mm (almost eight inches) of rain had fallen in the previous 24 hours in Bago region northeast of commercial hub Yangon -- a record for October.

The rainy season typically brings months of heavy downpours, but scientists say man-made climate change is making weather patterns more intense.

"Most of my belongings are ruined as they are floating in the water in my house," Bago resident Aye Kyi Ma, 47, told AFP from a boat on a submerged street.

"Now, I have to stay somewhere else," she said.

"There is no electricity and the water is not clean. So we have to buy our meal as we can't cook."

Rescuers said they recovered the body of one 60-year-old man in Bago.

In Pha Yar Gyi, near Bago, vehicles drove along roads where floodwaters reached bumper levels. Some residents floated along the water on makeshift rafts.

"In some places, the tide is as deep as a person's height," Aung Phyo Kyaw, a member of a local rescue team in Bago city told AFP.

People had moved to higher land and buildings such as monasteries and homes of their relatives to escape the rising waters, he said.

The military and police were also working with rescuers to reach people in flooded areas, he added.

The state-backed Global New Light of Myanmar newspaper said the nearby Bago river could exceed its "danger level" by almost a metre in the coming days, warning local residents to take precautionary measures.

Flooding began in July and has affected nine of Myanmar's states and regions, including Rakhine, Kachin, Karen, Mon and Chin.

Myanmar is in the grip of a bloody civil conflict between the junta, which ousted the government of Aung San Suu Kyi in February 2021, and armed groups opposed to its coup.

The IDF also said that it launched massive airstrikes against a neighbourhood of Gaza City, targeting more than 100 sites.

Israel has ordered a "complete siege" of the Gaza Strip and the ambassador to the United Arab Emirates said on Tuesday that nothing would stop them from crushing Hamas.

"We'll do everything needed in order to make sure that those people will not threaten and will not hurt our citizens again," Ambassador Amir Hayek told Reuters at the embassy in Abu Dhabi.

"We need to make sure that everyone will understand that if anyone will ever think about doing such things and putting Israeli citizens at risk, he will pay the full price and will not be able to do it again."

The victims of the Hamas attacks were overwhelmingly civilians, gunned down in their homes and on the streets.

"I don't know any sovereign country in the world that could have been in this situation and continuing things as usual without smashing the terrorists," Hayek said.

"We are talking about kids, women, elderly people, families. These people have been murdered, not for something they did. But for who they are," he further said.

"We'll do everything needed in order to make sure that those people will not threaten and will not hurt our citizens again," Ambassador Amir Hayek told Reuters at the embassy in Abu Dhabi. "We need to make sure that everyone will understand that if anyone will ever think about doing such things and putting Israeli citizens at risk, he will pay the full price and will not be able to do it again." The victims of the Hamas attacks were overwhelmingly civilians, gunned down in their homes and on the streets. "I don't know any sovereign country in the world that could have been in this situation and continuing things as usual without smashing the terrorists," Hayek said. "We are talking about kids, women, elderly people, families. These people have been murdered, not for something they did. But for who they are," he further said.
