A low-flying chopper apparently signalled the mating season for crocodiles on a farm in Queensland, Australia. It may sound bizarre, but it is what it is.

It happened when a Chinook pilot reportedly attempted to fly particularly low over a saltwater crocodile farm.

The aim was to let the visitors on board take photos of some of the farm's inmates - the 3000 crocodiles.

The helicopter flying low, however, shockingly awakened the crocodiles' sexual desires, prompting them to "mate like mad".

When the crocodiles heard the disturbance, all the large bulls rose up, screamed, and rumbled at the skies, according to John Lever, who is the owner of the Koorana Crocodile Farm.

And by the time the helicopters left, they'd already started making some serious orgiastic baby-making.

Notably, saltwater crocodiles (Crocodylus porosus) mate annually and time their mating to coincide with the ideal time to lay eggs in a burrow or nest.

Thunderstorm seasons are not ideal as the hatchlings may drown in flood waters following severe rains and storms.

Hence, they wait for the thunderstorm season to pass for the mating, when the offspring are more likely to hatch. Also, with the warm and wet weather, October is a great time in Northern Australia.

Did a Chinook helicopter send crocodiles into mating frenzy on Australian farm?

ExxonMobil sealed a megadeal to acquire Pioneer Natural Resources for about $60 billion, bolstering its holdings in the Permian Basin, a key US petroleum region, the companies announced Wednesday.

Under the all-stock transaction, ExxonMobil will buy Texas-based Pioneer for $59.5 billion based on ExxonMobil's closing price on October 5. The overall transaction, including debt, is valued at around $64.5 billion, the companies said.

ExxonMobil said the takeover, the company's biggest since the late 1990s acquisition of Mobil by Exxon, will enable greater economies of scale, permitting it to deploy drilling and operating technologies over a bigger region.

"The combined capabilities of our two companies will provide long-term value creation well in excess of what either company is capable of doing on a standalone basis," said ExxonMobil Chief Executive Darren Woods.

The "highly contiguous" drilling acreage of the two companies will allow "for greater opportunities to deploy our technologies, delivering operating and capital efficiency as well as significantly increasing production," Woods said.

The Permian Basin is located in western Texas and eastern New Mexico.

The takeover comes as oil currently trades at more than $85 a barrel, a relatively high historical benchmark.

ExxonMobil vowed that it would employ best practices on the environment, but as a longterm bet on oil and gas, the merger is unlikely to please climate activists.

While ExxonMobil usually avoids big deals under a high price scenario, analysts noted that Pioneer's shares had retreated prior to speculation of the deal.

Another factor favoring a deal was the impending retirement of Pioneer CEO Scott Sheffield, who has planned to step down at the end of 2023.

Soul-shattering images from Israel and Palestine show chilling reality of war

Syrian state television reported on Thursday (Oct 12) that Israeli strikes targeted Syria's two main airports. It said that "Israeli aggression targets Damascus and Aleppo airports".

Syria's pro-government Sham FM radio said that the airport was damaged adding Syrian air defences were launched in response to the attacks.

It said there had been damage but no casualties at the Aleppo airport.

The alleged strikes have repeatedly caused the grounding of flights at the airports in the capital Damascus and the northern city of Aleppo, both of which are controlled by the government of war-torn Syria.

Citing an unidentified military source, the state media said that the "simultaneous" strikes "damaged landing strips in the two airports, putting them out of service".

A few social media accounts claimed that the Iranian foreign minister was set to visit Damascus after Saudi Arabia and Iran's leadership had a call this morning about the situation in Gaza. There's no confirmation.

Israel strikes airports of Damascus and Aleppo in Syria: Report

The Palestinian group Hamas launched an unprecedented terror attack from Gaza into Israel this past weekend. It was one of the most serious escalations since Israel's creation in 1948 as hundreds of people were killed on both sides.

More than 1,500 Hamas militants stormed through the Gaza security barrier on October 7 in a coordinated land, air and sea attack.

They used sophisticated weapons, despite the fact that the Hamas-ruled enclave of Gaza is a poor and densely populated area, with limited resources.

But the matter of concern here is that the advanced and precision weapons are becoming part of the arsenal of Hamas, a group that has been designated a terrorist organisation by dozens of countries.

Who funds Hamas?

Several nations including the US and the UK have designated Hamas as a terrorist organisation, while some countries label only their military wing as terrorists.

The terror designation means providing aid or material support to such organisations, including volunteering to join them is considered a criminal activity. Hence, it becomes difficult for the militants to ask for military aid.

But they are getting it.

Here at WION, we are decoding the routes of the financial help and arms supply.

For a better understanding of its financial sources, it is important to know about the two wings of Hamas — the social service wing, Dawah, and the military arm, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades.

The social service wing is an active part of collecting funds as it looks after providing education, healthcare, and social services to Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

The money trail

Iran's name comes when the question arises on how is Hamas financed. Tehran accounts for roughly 70 per cent of the funding.

Palestinian expatriates and private donors across the world provided much of the funding to the Hamas movement.

Reports have claimed that they also received money through some Islamic charities in the West via Hamas-backed social service groups. This also led to the freezing of assets by the US Treasury as and when identified.

Besides Iran, Turkey has also supported Hamas, especially after President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's rise to power in 2002.

Turkey has been accused of funding the Hamas militants through aid diverted from the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency. But it says it only backs the political movement.

The military aid:

Not just money-wise, Iran also helps the militant group in the form of military assistance and necessary training. The West argues that the military aid has, more-or-less, remained despite a drop in financial contribution because of recent economic sanctions.

The West contends that the weapons are supplied to Hamas after arms smugglers drop them on the shore along the Mediterranean Sea despite the Israeli Navy's vigilance.

As an alternative route, the smugglers use tunnels for weapon supply. They delivered M-302 and Fajr-3, which is an Iranian-built unguided surface-to-surface artillery rocket.

CIA mentioned in its World Factbook that "Hamas acquires its weapons through smuggling or local construction and receives some military support from Iran". But a direct role of Iran is yet to be established.

As quoted by a news site, Bilal Saab, who is senior fellow and director of the Defense and Security Program at the Middle East Institute (MEI) in Washington, said: "Hamas' tunnel infrastructure is still massive despite Israel and Egypt regularly degrading it."

"Hamas has received arms from Iran smuggled into the (Gaza) Strip via tunnels. This often included longer-range systems," said Daniel Byman, who is a senior fellow with the Transnational Threats Project at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS).

Charles Lister, a senior fellow at the MEI said that "Iran has also been shipping Hamas its more advanced… ballistic missiles via sea, in components for construction in Gaza".

Iran has long financially and militarily backed Hamas but has insisted it had no involvement in the group's assault that erupted Saturday.

What does the West say?

After the recent attack, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that the Palestinian militant group Hamas would not have been able to launch its "unprecedented" attacks on Israel without having had Iranian support in recent years.

"So far, we have no tangible evidence that Iran gave concrete and operational support to this cowardly attack. But it is clear to all of us that without Iranian support over the last few years, Hamas would not have been able to carry out these unprecedented attacks on Israeli territory," Scholz said in an address to parliament.

US President Joe Biden warned Iran to "be careful". He said, "We made it clear to the Iranians: Be careful."

What exactly is Hamas?

Hamas is one of the two major political parties in Palestinian territories. It governs more than two million Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, however, it is more popular for its armed resistance to Israel.

Hamas was founded in 1987 during the first Palestinian Intifada (or uprising). It is backed by Shi'ite Iran and shares the Islamist ideology of the Muslim Brotherhood, which was established in Egypt in the 1920s.

Hamas has run the Gaza Strip since 2007, after a brief civil war with forces loyal to the Fatah movement led by President Mahmoud Abbas, who is based in the West Bank. He also heads the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO).

The Hamas takeover of Gaza followed its win in Palestinian parliamentary elections in 2006 – the last time they were held. Hamas accused Abbas of conspiring against it. Abbas described what happened as a coup.

Explained: Who funds Hamas? How terror group gets money and military equipment

Microsoft said on Wednesday the U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS) in September notified the company that it is seeking an additional tax payment of $28.9 billion, plus penalties and interest for tax years from 2004 to 2013.

Microsoft said the IRS notices relate to an ongoing dispute between the company and the U.S. tax authority, which is auditing how Microsoft allocated its profit among different countries and jurisdictions.

The Redmond, Washington-based company said it has since changed its practices so that "issues raised by the IRS are relevant to the past but not to our current practices," according to a Microsoft blog.

Microsoft said it believes that any taxes owed after the audit would be reduced by up to $10 billion based on tax laws passed by former President Donald Trump.

The company said it disagrees with the IRS's findings and plans to dispute them, first in an internal IRS proceeding and then later, if necessary, in courts.

The IRS told Reuters it is prevented by U.S. law from confirming or denying whether it is auditing any taxpayer.

Microsoft says US has asked for $28.9 billion in audit dispute

Republican lawmakers on Wednesday (Oct 11) nominated Rep. Steve Scalise of Louisiana to be the next speaker of the House after a secret vote to succeed Kevin McCarthy, who was ousted by his own party in an unprecedented vote.

Scalise and Judiciary Committee chairman Jim Jordan were vying to replace McCarthy. Both emerged as popular picks and shared similar policy platforms.

It is not yet clear when the full House will hold the speaker vote. Scalise currently serves as House majority leader. For now, House Republicans have delayed further action when Scalise appeared to be short of the support needed to win a vote of the full chamber.

Scalise appears set for a challenging role after hard-right members of his party cut short the tenure of the last three holders of the position. Some 1,800 years ago, New Zealand's Taupō volcano last erupted, and the massive blast flung shards of glass all the way to Antarctica.

Now, scientists have discovered six glass fragments that were hurled 5,000 kilometres south and buried beneath 280 metres of Antarctic ice over 2,000 years ago.

A seventh shard, generated by an earlier eruption of the same volcano, assisted the team in determining their precise origins and confirming the timing of the event.

Researchers have been trying to find evidence, in the form of radiocarbon dating of trees that were killed by the blast, but it is argued that the gathered information may have been contaminated.

The radiocarbon dating of trees suggests that the eruption took place around the date of A.D. 232, however, some researchers say that it could have occurred up to two centuries later.

As quoted by Science Alert, environmental scientist Stephen Piva, who is also the study's lead author and a PhD candidate at Te Herenga Waka-Victoria University of Wellington, said: "Combined, the seven shards provide a unique and undeniable double fingerprint of the Taupō volcano as the source."

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has arrived in Tel Aviv Israel as his mission in West Asia is largely to prevent a War even as Washington is strongly backing Israel in the war against Hamas. In a show of solidarity with Washington's closest West Asia Ally Blinken will meet senior officials and Israeli officials possibly including prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Hamas used drones for border surveillance

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former defence chief and centrist opposition party leader Benny Gantz have agreed to form an emergency government, a joint statement said on Wednesday (Oct 11).

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former defence chief and centrist opposition party leader Benny Gantz have agreed to form an emergency government, a joint statement said on Wednesday (Oct 11). The statement read, "Following a meeting... held today, the two agreed on establishing an emergency government and war cabinet." "Israel before anything else," Gantz wrote in a social media post while the National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir wrote that he "welcomes the unity, now we must win". Israel is at war as it faces the deadliest attack since its creation in 1948. In the first week of October, more than 1,500 Hamas militants stormed through the Gaza security barrier in the first weekend of October in their coordinated land, air and sea attack on the Jewish Sabbath. Also read: What are white phosphorus bombs that Israel reportedly used in Gaza? Is it illegal? Israel's 'war cabinet' In general, a war cabinet is a committee formed by a government in a time of war. The aim of such special cabinets is to efficiently and effectively conduct that war. It is quite common for a war cabinet to have the prime minister/president of the nation and senior military officers as a war cabinet is usually a subset of the full executive cabinet of ministers. It also has opposition politicians as members. Israel's three-member "war cabinet" would include Netanyahu, Gantz and Defence Minister Yoav Gallant. The statement said that Gadi Eisenkot, who is also a former army chief from Gantz's party, and Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer will serve as observers. A seat for the opposition leader Yair Lapid would be "reserved" in the war cabinet, but he has not joined his former ally, Gantz, the statement added. After the announcement, Justice Minister Yariv Levin said the agreement "is the right and necessary thing to do — from here, we work together". Economy Minister Nir Barkat wrote: "The State of Israel has a unity government. At a time like this, we must join forces, give support to IDF soldiers and work as one until there is a complete victory of the State of Israel over its enemy." Any impact on parties? The unity among political parties, which are normally deeply hostile to one another, shows the scale of the crisis that has unfolded across Israel, with an uncertain future. But the statement said that the overall, five members of Gantz's National Unity party would become ministers without portfolio. It also noted appointments for senior positions would be automatically extended during the war, with Israeli central bank governor Amir Yaron due to complete his five-year tenure at the end of the year. Also read: Gaza Strip and the struggle for survival for millions of its residents What will the 'war cabinet' do? Amid the escalating situation and Israel's raging fighting against Hamas militants, the emergency government will get broader national consensus to military action. The cabinet includes two strong people who are experts when it comes to military strategies. Gantz and Eisenkot are former Israeli military chiefs of staff. It has been agreed that no legislation in Knesset or government resolutions will be advanced during the war if they are not related to the management of the war. Watch: Is Israel preparing for a multi-front war? × Judicial overhaul frozen Israel has agreed also to freeze the government's judicial overhaul, which had triggered mass street protests since the start of the year, said to be the biggest in the country's history. Since the start of the year, huge weekly protests have been held by people who oppose the government's reform plans. Tens of thousands of people stormed the streets in towns and cities across the country as the scale of the protests grew gradually. In July, Israel's parliament passed the first part to overhaul the country's judiciary system. It is controversial as the legislation abolishes the "reasonableness doctrine," which the Supreme Court has employed to evaluate government policies. The war has given a break to all the government's plans. Also read: Israel vs Hamas war | A look at firepower in Israeli arsenal History of cabinet war rooms The concept of war cabinets, or war rooms, is old. It gained prominence during the World War II. One of the most famous in that period was British prime minister Winston Churchill's War Cabinet. Let's dive into its history: Plans were drafted as early as the 1920s to evacuate the prime minister, cabinet, and key personnel from London; however, concerns about the speed of the evacuation led to a search for an emergency shelter in central London. Not just evacuation, there were also concerns over the idea that Londoners would feel abandoned if the government and prime minister were in a safe place, away from the city. Hence, the New Public Offices building was selected in June 1938, which was near Parliament, with a strong steel frame and a large basement. History books have mentioned that the War Cabinet met in the basement during air attacks, and it also served as the location of a military information centre with a "Map Room" in its centre. This was where important data for Prime Minister Churchill, the armed forces, and King George VI was gathered. One week before Britain declared war on Germany, on August 27, 1939, the Cabinet War Rooms were completely operational. Explained: Israel forms emergency 'war cabinet'. What is it? What will it do?

Israel has launched incessant air strikes at Hamas targets in Gaza after members of the Palestinian militant group stormed Israeli towns in the first week of October in a surprise and unprecedented assault.

The attack by Hamas on Saturday (Oct 7) was launched from the Gaza enclave, killing over 1,000 Israelis, mostly civilians. Hamas militants also took dozens hostage, including from a famous music festival.

The subsequent armed conflict continues to escalate as hundreds of people have died on both sides and the toll is expected to rise further.

However, other concerns have been raised over the way this war is going forward. Experts have called out Israel after a video purportedly showed the alleged use of white phosphorus bombs in densely populated areas.

The matter is contested, but WION here decodes everything you need to know about the white phosphorus bombs.

What are white phosphorus bombs?

White phosphorus is a waxy crystalline solid, which turns dark on exposure to light. This toxic substance comes in white to yellow transparent. White phosphorus has a match-like or garlic-like, acrid odour, however, it is not feasible to depend on odour for its detection.

It is used by the military in the form of various types of ammunition as an incendiary agent because it spontaneously catches fire in the air when it comes into contact with oxygen.

The substance is also used by the militaries across the world as a smoke agent because it produces clouds of irritating white smoke.

The Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, an intergovernmental implementing body for the Chemical Weapons Convention, has not listed White Phosphorous in any of the three Schedules of Chemical Weapons.

White phosphorus can ignite fast-burning and fast-spreading fires on the ground, and several reports have claimed it is extremely difficult to extinguish once ignited.

How can white phosphorus be disseminated?

White phosphorus munitions can cause severe harm as exposure to them leads to burn injuries and vapour inhalation.

It can be absorbed into the body when inhaled, ingested, or through skin contact. It sticks to many surfaces, including skin and clothing.

It can be released into indoor air as smoke and can contaminate water bodies if contacted, which will impact millions — humans and animals.

A report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) mentioned that white phosphorus cannot be used to contaminate food. It added that if white phosphorus is released as smoke, it may not contaminate agricultural products. However, particles of white phosphorus that do not react with air may contaminate agricultural products.

Are white phosphorus bombs banned?

White phosphorus does not occur naturally as it is manufactured using phosphate rocks. As per international laws, the use of white phosphorus shells is prohibited in heavily populated civilian areas. However, the laws allow its usage in open spaces to be used as cover for troops.

White phosphorus weapons are not banned, but their use in civilian areas is considered a war crime.

Human Rights Watch has said that there have been documented civilian deaths from the use of white phosphorus in war zones in countries and areas such as Syria, Afghanistan, and Gaza.

What are other applications of white phosphorus?

White phosphorus is also used as a component in fertilisers, food additives and cleaning compounds.

It was initially used in pesticides and fireworks, but many countries have banned its use in several sectors.

Has Israel used such bombs previously?

A report by Human Rights Watch claimed that Israel extensively used white phosphorus munitions in its 22-day military operation in Gaza called 'Operation Cast Lead' that lasted from December 27, 2008 to January 18, 2009.

The report clarified that white phosphorus munitions did not kill the most civilians in Gaza, as people died from missiles, bombs, heavy artillery, tank shells, and small arms fire.

However, it did argue that their use in densely populated neighbourhoods violated international humanitarian law, which requires taking precautions to avoid civilian harm.

Reports of other war crimes during the Israel-Hamas war

The ongoing UN investigation into alleged human rights violations in the Israeli-Hamas conflict said there was "already clear evidence that war crimes may have been committed".

"All those who have violated international law and targeted civilians must be held accountable for their crimes," said the Commission of Inquiry as quoted by the news agency AFP.

The COI, the highest-level investigation that can be ordered by the UN Human Rights Council, was set up in May 2021 to investigate all alleged violations of international humanitarian and human rights law.

The independent commission said it had been "collecting and preserving evidence of war crimes committed by all sides" in the current conflict.

"Taking civilian hostages and using civilians as human shields are war crimes," it said.

It is also "gravely concerned" by Israel's total siege on the Gaza Strip, "which will undoubtfully cost civilian lives and constitutes collective punishment".

Explained I What are white phosphorus bombs that Israel reportedly used in Gaza? Is it illegal?

Penguin Random House announced on Wednesday (Oct 11) that Salman Rushdie's memoir Knife: Meditations After an Attempted Murder, which is based on last year's stabbing attack on him in New York, will be published on Apr 16 next year.

Rushdie was stabbed multiple times while he was preparing to deliver a lecture on a stage at the Chautauqua Institution in New York State in Aug 2022. The acclaimed author received life-threatening injuries and underwent emergency surgery. The author lost vision in one eye and feeling in some fingertips.

At the Hay literary festival in June, the Indian-born British-American author said that he was working on a new book. In a pre-recorded Zoom appearance, he said that it would be a "relatively short book" with a "couple of hundred pages".

He told the audience, "It's not the easiest book in the world to write, but it's something I need to get past in order to do anything else. I can't really start writing a novel that's got nothing to do with this. So I just have to deal with it."

The publication said that his book will detail the horrific experiences in the aftermath of the attack.

As quoted by media reports, Nihar Malaviya, who is the CEO of Penguin Random House, described the book as a "reminder of the power of words to make sense of the unthinkable. We are honoured to publish it, and amazed at Salman's determination to tell his story, and to return to the work he loves."

Why was Rushdie stabbed?

It is believed that Rushdie was attacked because of his infamous novel The Satanic Verses, though it's not confirmed.

The author spent years hiding under death threats from Iran. The novel was banned in many countries with large Muslim populations. However, Iran denied any involvement in the New York attack.

The book was published in 1988 and a year later, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, then supreme leader of Iran, pronounced a fatwa or religious edict, calling upon Muslims to kill the novelist and anyone involved in its publication for blasphemy.

Even a bounty worth millions of dollars was raised to murder the novelist.

The attacker, Hadi Matar of Fairview, New Jersey, rushed to the stage and stabbed the writer in the neck and torso.

The 24-year-old later pleaded not guilty to second-degree attempted murder and assault charges.

Matar had once praised Iran's Khomeini in an exclusive jailhouse interview with The Post.

I can't really start writing a novel that's got nothing to do with this. So I just have to deal with it." The publication said that his book will detail the horrific experiences in the aftermath of the attack. As quoted by media reports, Nihar Malaviya, who is the CEO of Penguin Random House, described the book as a "reminder of the power of words to make sense of the unthinkable. We are honoured to publish it, and amazed at Salman's determination to tell his story, and to return to the work he loves." It is believed that Rushdie was attacked because of his infamous novel The Satanic Verses, though it's not confirmed.
