Ukraine has claimed that Russian forces have intensified the fighting to capture the eastern Ukrainian town of Avdiivka, which has been at the forefront of the conflict since 2014. The town's top official was quoted as saying on Monday (Nov 27) that the Russian army was trying to advance on all sides after weeks of fighting.

Avdiivka was briefly captured in 2014 by Russian-financed separatists who seized large chunks of eastern Ukraine. However, fortifications were later built around the town.

Since mid-October, the Russian troops have been pressing land and air-based attacks on Avdiivka to achieve their aim to push through eastern Ukraine's Donbas region.

Vitaliy Barabash, who is the head of Avdiivka's military administration, gave the latest information, which came after last week's reports that Ukrainian troops had made some headway in halting and pushing back the Russian advance.

Barabash told the media outlet Espreso TV: "Things in the Avdiivka sector have become even tougher. The intensity of clashes has been increasing for some time."

"The Russians have opened up two more sectors from which they have begun making assaults - in the direction of Donetsk ... and in the so-called industrial zone. The enemy is attempting to storm the city from all directions," he added.

The region has faced the wrath of ongoing fighting as Ukrainian officials claim that not a single building remains intact after months of battle in the town. They also noted that fewer than 1,500 residents remained of 32,000 before the war. Major fighting has focused on the industrial zone and the coking plant.

In the earlier reports, Barabash said that Ukrainian forces had in recent days pushed back Russian forces near Stepove, a village northwest of Avdiivka, pinning them down near a rail line.

Israel's health maintenance organisation's report highlights how the war is impacting people residing in the conflict zones. A report published by HAARETZ on Monday (Nov 27) mentioned that the use of prescription drugs to treat depression and trauma increased in the month after the Israel-Hamas war started.

As per the report, Clalit Health Services said the number of prescriptions issued to treat those conditions between September and October grew by 11 per cent. This particular health service is the HMO which, as per the report, treats more than half of all Israelis and around 80 per cent of those living in the war-torn north and south.

The report also mentioned that the rise is seen in prescriptions, which included psychiatric drugs and tranquilisers, such as antidepressants and antianxiety drugs from the SSRI family, and also the drugs from the benzodiazepine family.

As per the report, the HMOs stated that in most of the new cases, the prescribed drugs are for short-term use and are aimed at treating anxiety. They are not necessarily a long-term solution. People are also buying over-the-counter preparations and nutritional supplements with a focus on relaxation and stress reduction.

Another health service, the Maccabi Health Services, which insures some 2.6 million Israelis, said as mentioned in the report that the number of prescriptions it was making for anti-depressants and trauma and tranquillisers had risen 20 per cent in the first months of the war.

As quoted, Dr Tali Shmueli, Maccabi's chief psychiatrist, said: "Not everyone who visits a doctor will necessarily leave with a prescription. There are those for whom a reassuring call or a referral to call therapy is enough. There are those who will be directed to use natural sedatives. Such preparations are not addictive, have no side effects and can help for a certain amount of time."

Shmueli said that "many of those seeking help don't really need psychiatric medication. However, in cases where we really see that someone is not functioning, we give a prescription for medication".

In a report published on October 11, just a few days after the Israel-Hamas war started, the American Psychological Association released a report, titled APA warns of psychological impacts of violence in Middle East.

The report said: "APA is gravely concerned for the physical safety and mental health of the millions of Israelis and Palestinians affected by this growing surge in violence."

"APA deplores the human cost of aggression, including violations of human rights, adverse humanitarian consequences, deep psychological distress, and the loss of dignity and freedom. All individuals deserve to live free of fear and violence so that their mental health and well-being can flourish," the report added.

The report further mentions that "psychological science tells us that fear, anxiety and traumatic stress have long-term effects on health and well-being. These impacts are also being felt by people around the world who have families and friends in the region, as well as those concerned about the effects of war everywhere."

Meta, the parent company of Instagram and Facebook, intentionally made its platforms such that it is addictive to children, a recent unsealed legal complaint claimed. Media reports published on Monday (Nov 27) say that the lawsuit alleged that Meta knowingly allowed underage users to hold accounts to gather personal data and sell it to advertisers.

The federal lawsuit against Meta was filed by the attorney generals in 33 states in October, but the details were not revealed in the report. The lawsuit was filed by states ranging from California to Wisconsin.

Now the complaint has unveiled further details as it alleged that Meta harmed young users on Facebook and Instagram with highly manipulative algorithms and technological tools.

The complaint alleged that the social media giant knew about the issue, but it opted to never disclose it. Millions of complaints were also sent to Meta but it didn't take action in a broader perspective, but it did disable a fraction of those accounts.

Citing internal company documents, media reports mentioned that the large number of underage users was an "open secret" at the company.

When the complaint was filed in October, 33 states in a joint statement claimed that Meta's business practices violated the federal Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and other state consumer protection laws. Similar actions were also taken by eight other states in state courts.

As per the complaint, Meta in 2021 received over 402,000 reports that under 13 users are on Instagram. The tech company disabled only 164,000 accounts — a number half of the reported accounts and apparently with still a backlog of up to 2.5 million accounts of younger children awaiting action.

The 233-page complaint noted that attorney generals alleged that compulsive use of Facebook or Instagram by teens and children can cause physical and mental harm.

The case is based on snippets of emails, earnings call transcripts and other internal communications. The mentioned documents served as evidence which suggested how valuable personal information and time of young users are to the company.

As quoted by reports, a Meta spokesperson said in a statement on Monday: "The complaint mischaracterizes our work using selective quotes and cherry-picked documents."

Local Ukrainian officials have alleged that Russia on Saturday (Nov 25) launched its largest drone attack against the capital of Kyiv since the war started last year in February. Media reports claimed that at least five people were injured.

Ukraine's Air Force in a Telegram post noted that "a total of nearly 75 Shahed drones were launched from two directions – Primorsko-Akhtarsk and the Kursk region, Russia. The primary target was the city of Kyiv". The official said that there was a "record number" of drones.

The air force also stated that the air defences intercepted 71 of the Iranian-made drones across six regions of Ukraine, including Kyiv.

The Air Force said: "Anti-aircraft missile troops, tactical aviation, mobile fire groups, and electronic warfare units were involved in repelling the air attack." As per the Air Force, a Kh-59 guided missile was also destroyed in the Dnipropetrovsk region.

Ukraine also said that dozens of residential buildings and over 100 facilities were without power in Kyiv. Ukraine's energy ministry said in a statement that the "large-scale drone attack" cut off power to an overhead line.

"As a result, 77 residential buildings and 120 facilities in the central part of the city lost power," he said, further adding that work was underway to restore service.

As per the Air Force, a Kh-59 guided missile was also destroyed in the Dnipropetrovsk region. UN Climate Change chief Simon Stiell warned on Tuesday that climate pledges of the countries will cut carbon emissions by just two per cent by the end of the decade from 2019 levels. The projected data is far short of the 43 per cent fall needed to limit warming to 1.5C.

An assessment of climate pledges shows only minor progress in reducing emissions this decade and the world leaders have not acted with sufficient urgency to curb greenhouse gas emissions.

Stiell said that the annual assessment of climate commitments shows they are "severely off track" as he called for climate talks in Dubai this month.

Climate change is evident in the form of rising global temperatures and disturbances in weather patterns, and now the UN said that the world is "failing to get a grip" on these climate-related issues.

Elon Musk-owned social media company X could lose as much as $75 million in advertising revenue by the end of the year as dozens of major brands pause their marketing campaigns, the New York Times reported on Friday.

Musk backing an antisemitic post on the platform last week has led several companies including Walt Disney and Warner Bros Discovery to pause their advertisements on the site formerly called Twitter.

X has struck back and sued media watchdog group Media Matters, alleging the organization defamed the platform with a report that said ads for major brands including Apple and Oracle had appeared next to posts touting Adolf Hitler and the Nazi party.

Internal documents viewed by The New York Times this week list more than 200 ad units of companies from the likes of Airbnb, Amazon, Coca-Cola and Microsoft, many of which have halted or are considering pausing their ads on the social network, the report said.

X said on Friday that $11 million in revenue was at risk and the exact figure fluctuated as some advertisers returned to the platform and others increased spending, according to the report.

The company did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.

Advertisers have fled X since Musk bought it in October 2022 and reduced content moderation, resulting in a sharp rise in hate speech on the site, according to civil rights groups.

The platform's U.S. ad revenue has declined at least 55% year-over-year each month since Musk's takeover, Reuters previously reported.

The Dutch defence ministry said on Thursday (Nov 23) that the human remains found in the wreckage of a British World War II bomber that crashed into the IJsselmeer have been identified.

British airmen Arthur Smart, Raymond Moore and Charles Sprack can be laid to rest as these last three missing airmen have been identified 80 years after they were shot down by the Germans.

The ministry said that the Lancaster crashed in the IJsselmeer in the early morning of June 13, 1943, after a bombing flight in the Ruhr area. It was on its way home from a mission over Bochem in Germany.

Their remains, which have been identified by laboratory research in Soesterberg, were found during the recovery operation.

The ministry said that the defence aircraft recovery team carried out the operation between September 5 and October 6, at the request of the municipality of Súdwest-Fryslân.

The statement added, "In addition to remains of kite equipment and clothing, the recovery team found 2 silver-plated cigarette cases. It bore the initials of Arthur Smart and Edward Moore. These personal belongings are returned to their families."

Ex-officer convicted in George Floyd's killing stabbed in prison, seriously injured: Report

Health experts often explain the benefits of healthy eating habits and also ask us to follow a well-balanced diet for well-being. But research suggests that healthy eating will not only improve the present, but also the future.

Results of the latest study, published in the journal Nature Food, found that if a person switches to a healthy diet and sticks to it, he/she can add up to 10 years to your life.

The findings were published after the researchers analysed food intake data and health outcomes of nearly half a million residents in the United Kingdom.

This long-running study, titled "Life expectancy can increase by up to 10 years following sustained shifts towards healthier diets in the United Kingdom", was published on Nov 20.

Lars Fadnes, who is a public health researcher at the University of Bergen in Norway, led the team of researchers who studied the life expectancy of some 467,354 people.

For this UK Biobank study, which started in 2006, all the residents documented their eating habits.

The researchers identified healthy and unhealthy eaters, as well as persons whose food intake matched the UK's Eatwell Guide. They also studied those who followed a diet termed the longevity diet.

"We show that sustained dietary change from unhealthy dietary patterns to the Eatwell Guide dietary recommendations is associated with 8.9 and 8.6 years gain in life expectancy for 40-year-old males and females, respectively," the researchers wrote in the study.

The study noted that in the same population, sustained dietary change from unhealthy to longevity-related eating patterns is associated with a 10.8 and 10.4 years rise in life expectancy in males and females, respectively, in the same population.

The study mentioned that the maximum gains are obtained from consuming more whole grains, nuts and fruits and less sugar-sweetened beverages and processed meats.

"Understanding the contribution of sustained dietary changes to life expectancy can provide guidance for the development of health policies," it added.

The study author Katherine Livingstone of Deakin University, told ScienceAlert: "It's exciting, but not surprising, to see the enormous health benefits of making dietary changes."

"This work is important as it demonstrates that it's never too late to make small and sustained changes towards a healthier diet," added Livingstone, who is also the study author.
