Peruvian scientists from the state agency that studies glaciers said on Wednesday (Nov 22) that Peru has lost more than half of its glacier surface in the last six decades. The authorities also said that 175 glaciers became extinct due to climate change between 2016 and 2020.

Mayra Mejía, an official with Peru's National Institute of Research of Mountain Glaciers and Ecosystems, or Inaigem, said: "In 58 years, 56.22% of the glacial coverage recorded in 1962 has been lost."

The institute stated that Peru holds 68 per cent of the world's tropical glaciers. While weighing in on the alarming stats, it said that warming temperatures have led to melting and the creation of new mountain lagoons that risk overflowing and flooding.

It was confirmed by Jesús Gómez, director of glacier research at Inaigem, who told The Associated Press that the major factor behind this is the average global temperature increase as it leads to an accelerated retreat of glaciers.

"The new lagoons could be, in the future, water reserves, but being at high altitudes they cause a danger of overflowing and flooding," said Gomez as quoted by Reuters.

The findings came after analysing satellite imagery until 2020. The report shows that 2,084 glaciers cover 1,050 square kilometres in Peru, which is less than the 2,399 square kilometres of ice and snow in 1962.

Mejía, who is an expert in glaciology, said there are some mountain ranges in Peru where glaciers have almost disappeared, namely Chila. As per the report, Chila has lost 99 per cent of its glacial surface since 1962.

Beatriz Fuentealba, the institute's director, was quoted by Reuters as saying that "in four years, from 2016 to 2020 we have lost almost 6% of these high mountain glaciers".

"This means that we have lost more than half of our water reserves," said Environment Minister Albina Ruiz, noting that glacial retreat is impacting the natural mountain ecosystem.

"Although we cannot prevent glaciers from disappearing over the years, we can reduce the speed at which they are being lost," she said, calling for less pollution, more green areas and "above all, recognizing that the mountain provides us with life."

Strathmore Rose Tiara: Kate adorns rare tiara seen in public after almost a century

Kate Middleton wore a rare tiara as she attended a state banquet at Buckingham Palace for South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeo and First Lady Kim Keon Hee.

Kate picked the Strathmore Rose tiara, which dates back to the 18th century and one she had never worn before.

The stunning floral tiara had not been seen in nearly nine decades, that is reportedly since the 1930s. It was part of Queen Mother's collection.

Its name comes from Queen Mother's father, the Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne.

The tiara was a wedding present when she married Prince Albert. Kate is the second person to wear the Strathmore Rose tiara in public after Queen Mother.

The tiara features a garland of leaves and wild roses with diamonds set in gold and silver. The flowers can also be worn as brooches and some reports say that the central element of flowers can be interchanged with sapphires.

The tiara can be worn with two different frames, one across the forehead or on top of the head. It was used both ways by Queen Mother.

Deformable mirrors (DM) are mirrors whose surfaces can be bent to achieve wavefront control and optical aberration correction, and their shape can be controlled with speed.

National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) said that these mirrors may enable direct imaging of exoplanets by correcting imperfections or shape changes in a space telescope down to subatomic scales. Notably, deformable mirrors are used in conjunction with wavefront sensors and real-time control systems in adaptive optics.

Scientists always look for Earth-like planets orbiting neighbouring stars and study them so that we can find whether or not we are alone in the universe. While doing so, it is vital to directly photograph such planets to investigate them and determine whether they can support life.

The reality is that these planets are difficult to see because the host star's light obscures them with its brightness. Hence, a coronagraph apparatus can be used to reduce the host star's glare light, which will allow the reflected light from the planet to be captured.

A report by NASA stated that a deformable mirror is a crucial component of a coronagraph because it can repair even the smallest flaws in the telescope. It can also remove any remaining starlight contamination.

NASA report said in a report published on November 21, "Detecting an Earth-like planet poses significant challenges as the planet is approximately 10 billion times fainter than its parent star. The main challenge is to block nearly all of the star's light so that the faint light reflected from the planet can be collected."

The report said that a coronagraph can filter starlight, but any instability in the telescope's optics can result in starlight leakage, generating glare that obscures the planet.

Hence, the NASA report said detecting an Earth-like planet using a coronagraph requires "precise control of both the telescope and the instrument's optical quality, or wavefront, to an extraordinary level of 10s of picometers (pm), which is approximately on the order of the size of a hydrogen atom".

NASA said in the report that future space coronagraphs will be able to reach this level of control because of flexible mirrors. These devices will be tested in space on a coronagraph technology demonstration instrument aboard NASA's Roman Space Telescope, which is scheduled to launch in May 2027.

A recent finding by a team of scholars might revolutionise how astronomers comprehend some of the universe's largest and most common stars. They studied some of the Milky Way's brightest and hottest stars and found that theorised binary systems consisting of a fast-rotating star feeding off a companion may actually be trinary systems.

For instance, systems with a drained husk of one star lurking in the larger star's glow and a second companion nearby. The team of scientists analysed data from the European Space Agency (ESA) Gaia mission. The findings hint at the positions of a thousand million stars throughout the Milky Way.

While analysing the data, the research by PhD student Jonathan Dodd and Professor René Oudmaijer, from the University's School of Physics and Astronomy, highlights a piece of new evidence that massive Be stars could in fact be "triples" and such triple-star systems could be far more common than we thought.

Be stars, also known as 'stellar vampires', are until now mainly thought to exist in double stars. Previous studies have stated that Be stars are a diverse group of stars with B spectral types and emission lines. A non-supergiant B star with one or more Balmer emission lines is often known as a classical Be star.

Be stars were found about a century and a half ago, in 1866. They are surrounded by a characteristic disc made of gas – similar to the rings of Saturn, but the formation of discs surrounding these enormous stars has remained a mystery.

So far, astronomers have agreed that the discs are generated by the rapid spinning of the Be stars, which can be caused by the stars interacting with another star in a binary system.

Dodd said: "The best point of reference for that is if you've watched Star Wars, there are planets where they have two Suns." But scientists claim that by studying data, they have discovered evidence that these stars actually exist in triple systems, with three bodies interacting instead of simply two.

Dodd added: "We observed the way the stars move across the night sky, over longer periods like 10 years, and shorter periods of around six months. If a star moves in a straight line, we know there’s just one star, but if there is more than one, we will see a slight wobble or, in the best case, a spiral."

"We applied this across the two groups of stars that we are looking at – the B stars and the Be stars – and what we found, confusingly, is that at first, it looks like the Be stars have a lower rate of companions than the B stars. This is interesting because we’d expect them to have a higher rate.”

However, Prof Oudmaijer said: "The fact that we do not see them might be because they are now too faint to be detected."

NASA's Earth Surface Mineral Dust Source Investigation (EMIT) instrument, which was launched last year in July and stationed on the International Space Station (ISS), has spotted greenhouse gas emission sources, especially methane. NASA said that the instrument has shown an ability to detect more than just surface minerals.

The US-based space agency said that data from the EMIT instrument is being used to identify point-source emissions of greenhouse gases with a precision that has shocked even its inventors.

A new study published in Science Advances on November 17 stated that the detection of methane was not part of EMIT's main goal, but the imaging spectrometer's designers believed it could do it.

Office Peacocking, a technique to bring employees back to workplace

Working from home during the coronavirus pandemic became a new normal. But as the virus cases subsided, employees have started going back to the offices.

Employers are trying to re-establish the pre-pandemic norms by asking for dedicated 40 hours a week to be spent in office cubicles and desks. But it's not that easy.

Employees have become used to working from home — which is extremely convenient for those who have kids at home, or the elderly to take care of.

Now employers want to lure employees to offices, and to do so, they are trying to create an inviting space. Some of them are making efforts to inject a sense of fun and innovation into the workplace. This trend is known as "office peacocking".

The focus of office peacocking is to transform offices into spaces that resemble homes rather than traditional corporate settings so that they are as comfortable as working from home.

Owl Labs' "State of Remote Work" report says that employers must consider instituting flexible arrangements as per today's employee demand. They must be "intentional" about how company headquarters look and operate now despite the financial burden of these changes.

The modern office set-up must aim at welcoming employees back. It should be decked up with features such as cosy couches, abundant natural lighting, vibrant accents, and living plants.
