Britain's King Charles III has been apparently making a profit from the deaths of thousands of people in the north-west of England by collecting their life savings, an investigation by The Guardian has revealed in a report published on Thursday (Nov 23).

The report added that the assets taken from the dead are "secretly" being used to renovate a commercial property empire, which is managed by his hereditary estate.

The Duchy of Lancaster is a private estate of the British sovereign and it remains in controversy for several reasons. But this land and property estate generated huge profits for the British monarch.

The report said that this land had collected "tens of millions of pounds in recent years" under a system that dates back to feudal times.

India's Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) on Friday (Nov 24) announced that it will give social media companies just seven days to align their terms of service and other policies with Indian laws and regulations to address issues related to the hosting of deepfakes on their platforms.

As the continues to evolve, deepfake technology has emerged as a major cause of concern globally. Deepfakes are realistic yet fabricated videos created by artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms trained on online footage. They are the manipulation of facial appearance through deep generative methods.

While addressing the media, Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar said: "Today we had a very longish meeting with all of the important players on the Internet, the Internet intermediaries. And we have raised the issue of deepfakes with them... I reminded them that way back in October 2022, the government of India has been alerting them to the threat of misinformation and deepfakes, which are part of misinformation."

"The intermediaries today all agreed that the current IT rules under the IT Act provide for adequate compliance requirements on their part to deal with deepfake, even as we speak to future regulations and a future law, which is certainly required, given that our IT Act is 23 years old," he added.

An elderly woman had to use her pension money to pay a fine imposed for entering New Zealand with a chicken sandwich, The New Zealand Herald reported on Tuesday (Nov 21).

Seventy-seven-year-old June Armstrong was carrying a chicken and lettuce sandwich in her backpack as she flew from Christchurch Airport to Brisbane Airport in northeastern Australia on May 2.

But when she landed in Australia, she was fined $1,995 for bringing that uneaten sandwich into the country. However, when she reached the airport, the authorities told her about a fine by customs.

Reports say that she had packed the sandwich in her bag before boarding the flight. She had declared her prescription medication to authorities, however, she forgot about the sandwich. She said she had planned to eat the sandwich on the flight but she fell asleep.

The report mentioned that a border patrol staff had also advised her to appeal the fine, but she only received automatic replies when she tried appealing the fine. Now with her experience, she wants to inform people so that they can avoid such situations.

As quoted by the NZ Herald, she said: "I was just sobbing and said '$NZ3300 for a little sandwich?'"

Hamas, a Palestine-based militant group, is set to release the first group of hostages later in the day. The truce will also allow increased aid to flow into the besieged Gaza Strip. The truce agreement has been negotiated by Qatar, Egypt and the United States. It brought the first pause in a seven-week-old war that has killed thousands of people. However, just minutes after the ceasefire took effect, the Israeli military sounded sirens in two villages near the Gaza Strip to warn people of possible rocket attacks from the Gaza Strip, just minutes after a truce came into force. Israel-Hamas war: Four-day truce takes effect, some hostages to be released as part of deal

Cameron Ortis, a former high-ranking Canadian police official, was found guilty on Wednesday (Nov 22) of leaking secret and classified information to suspected criminals. In a historic espionage case, the jury announced its landmark ruling stating that a former Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) intelligence official was guilty of breaching Canada's secrets law. Notably, his case is the first time an individual was tried under Canada’s current espionage law.

The 51-year-old Ortis was director general of the RCMP national intelligence coordination unit. He was arrested in 2020 on accusations of abusing his position in order to obtain sensitive material from Canada and the strong Five Eyes intelligence collaboration, which also includes Australia, the United States, the United Kingdom, and New Zealand.

Ortis then attempted to sell the information to those involved in money laundering activities for terrorist organisations on Canada's list. He also informed an unidentified person about an undercover police who was targeting one of his acquaintances in Vancouver, which the prosecution claimed put the undercover cop in danger.

He was found guilty on all the six counts he faced, which included four under the Security of Information Act (SOIA) for leaking and trying to sell special operational information. He was also found guilty of unauthorised use of a computer and breach of trust. His bail was revoked until a sentencing hearing scheduled for January 11-12.

Prosecutor Judy Kliewer was quoted in local reports as saying that "we will be seeking a very lengthy prison term" in the range of 20 years or more. And, he is not only a "flight risk, but he’s an asset. He has so much information. This is not a usual case at all".

The defence had sought to paint Ortis as a patriot and a dedicated member of the RCMP who acted "to confront a grave threat to Canada."

But Kliewer urged the jury in closing arguments not to believe him when Ortis claimed that "his criminal, self-motivated acts were aimed at some lofty and secret purpose."

Ortis received a suspicious tip from a foreign agency in late 2014, according to redacted transcripts of his evidence, which was provided behind closed doors for security reasons.

That led him on a secret mission to use intelligence to lure criminal targets into adopting an encrypted service set up to eavesdrop on their communications.

The tip, he said, included credible information about a national security threat that he had been instructed not to share with anyone as there was concern about a possible mole within police ranks.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has carried out many Apollo missions to explore the Moon. The missions also returned with 382 kilogrammes of lunar rocks, core samples, pebbles, sand, and dust from the lunar surface between 1969 and 1972. The samples have provided scientists with valuable insight into the universe.

The latest analysis on the Moon, published in the "Communications Earth & Environment" journal on November 15, has for the first time revealed the presence of hydrogen and the findings suggest that future astronauts could someday use water available right on the Moon for life support and rocket fuel.

Researchers with the US Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) announced last week that they discovered hydrogen in lunar soil sample 79221. The sample was given to the researchers by NASA for a research study. The observed hydrogen is assumed to have been created by the Moon's constant showers of solar wind and perhaps comet strikes.

In a press release published on NRL News on November 21, the lead author Katherine Burgess, who is a geologist at NRL, said: "Hydrogen has the potential to be a resource that can be used directly on the lunar surface when there are more regular or permanent installations there."

"Locating resources and understanding how to collect them prior to getting to the moon is going to be incredibly valuable for space exploration," Burgess added.

The research team, which is led by experts from NRL's Materials Science and Technology Division, is still studying lunar surface and asteroidal samples to learn more about how surfaces interact with the space environment, a process known as space weathering.

In previous studies on Apollo samples, researchers have verified the presence of solar wind helium in lunar soil grains.

Dr Burgess further said, "This is the first time scientists have demonstrated the detection of hydrogen-bearing species within vesicles in lunar samples."

"Previously, the same team at NRL used state-of-the-art techniques such as scanning transmission electron microscopy and electron energy loss spectroscopy to detect helium in lunar samples, and other researchers have found water in other planetary samples, but this is the first publication to show hydrogen in-situ in lunar samples," she added.

A doctor at Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City told the news agency AFP that its director and several other medical personnel were arrested by Israeli forces on Thursday (Nov 23). Khalid Abu Samra, a chief of the department at the hospital, said: "Doctor Mohammad Abu Salmiya was arrested along with several other senior doctors."

Al-Shifa Hospital has been a major focus of the Israeli military operation against Hamas in the aftermath of the October 7 Hamas terror attack on Israel.

"Fourty-seven days of hope came to an end with receiving the bitter news this morning about the murder of Shani on October 7. My heart goes out to her dear parents Jacob and Michal, her brother Aviel and her sister Nitzan - who for seven weeks turned every stone and went everywhere in Israel and the world to find Shani, and fought and cried out to bring her home. We all hug the family and stand by their side. May her memory be a blessing," Alfasi was quoted as saying by media outlets.

'We will forever remember her'

As quoted by the report, her older brother, Aviel Gabay, said that the recent law school graduate had called her mother at 6:40 am (local time), telling her about the stream of rockets and asking what she should do.

The report said that her mother instructed her to pull over and locate a safe area while she was driving. She proceeded to a field shelter near Kibbutz Alumim, unaware that there were terrorists shooting partygoers.

Aviel told the newspaper Maariv that they were "hoping for a different ending, and today we unfortunately discovered the worst ending possible. We believed for many days that she would come back, we were optimistic that there would be a happy ending."

"We will forever remember her joy and happiness. She was amazing and we hoped she would continue to spread her goodness in the world. She was just beginning her life and was in the middle of a law degree, which she will never finish," he added.

Shani Gabay, a 25-year-old Israeli woman who was missing since an unprecedented attack by Palestine-based militant group Hamas on October 7, was found dead by Israeli authorities, local media reported. Times of Israel reported that they have identified the body of Gabay, nearly seven weeks after the massacre at the Supernova rave near Gaza. She was reportedly taken hostage and kept with others. Gabay of Yokne'am had been working at the party and she was wounded in the leg. She was reportedly last seen seeking refuge in a police command post. Some reports on social media forums claimed that she was only identified by her teeth as she was found completely burned inside an ambulance set on fire by Hamas terrorists.
