Will Putin win?

In the election scheduled for March, Putin's victory is assured as he has established tight control over Russia's political system.

In a way, he is running uncontested as some of his critics who could challenge him on the ballot are either in jail or living abroad. Most of the independent media have been banned in the country.

The point was raised by Putin's staunch critic Alexei Navalny, currently in jail, who wrote a statement, urging his supporters to vote for anyone but Putin.

"Putin views this election as a referendum on approval of his actions. A referendum on approval of the war. Let’s disrupt his plans and make it happen so that no one on March 17 is interested in the rigged result, but that all of Russia saw and understood: the will of the majority is that Putin must leave," read the statement by Navalny.

So far, two people have announced plans to run for the post. Former lawmaker Boris Nadezhdin and Yekaterina Duntsova. '

Iran said on Wednesday (Dec 6) that it sent a capsule into orbit carrying animals as the nation prepares for human missions in coming years. The official IRNA news agency quoted telecommunications minister Isa Zarepour as saying that the capsule was launched 130 kilometres into orbit.

Zarepour stated that the 500-kilogramme capsule launch is intended to take Iranian astronauts to space in the future years. He mentioned that the launch of the capsule on a new class of domestically built space rockets named "Salman" could prove significant for the nation.

It was not immediately clear if live animals were in the capsule, whose launch came 13 years after it claimed that it sent turtles, a rat and worms into space.

Every now and then, Iran reports successful satellite and other spacecraft launches. In September, it announced that it had launched a data-collection satellite into space.

The US, along with other Western countries, has frequently warned Iran against space launches, claiming that the same technology can be used to build ballistic missiles, including those with nuclear warheads.

The successful launch of its first military satellite into orbit in April 2020 was criticised by the US.

Iran has always denied any ambition to develop nuclear weapons, insisting that its satellite and rocket launches are for civil or defence purposes only.

Kevin McCarthy announced Wednesday (Dec 6) that he will resign from Congress at the end of the year, bringing an end to his congressional career. He was ousted as the Republican speaker of the US House of Representatives in October.

"No matter the odds, or personal cost, we did the right thing. That may seem out of fashion in Washington these days, but delivering results for the American people is still celebrated across the country," he wrote.

"I never could have imagined the journey when I first threw my hat into the ring. I go knowing I left it all on the field—as always, with a smile on my face. And looking back, I wouldn't have had it any other way," he added.

The United States charged four pro-Russian soldiers with war crimes on Wednesday for the abduction and torture of an American national in Ukraine.

Attorney General Merrick Garland said the charges against the four "Russia-affiliated military personnel" were the first to be brought under a US war crimes statute passed by Congress nearly 30 years ago.

Garland, speaking to reporters, said Russian forces in Ukraine had committed "atrocities on the largest scale in any European armed conflict since the Second World War."

"As the world has witnessed the horrors of Russia's brutal invasion of Ukraine, so has the United States Department of Justice," he said. "The Justice Department will work for as long as it takes to pursue accountability and justice for Russia's war of aggression."

According to the indictment, two of those charged -- Suren Seiranovich Mkrtchyan, 45, and Dmitry Budnik -- were commanding officers of military units of the "Russian Armed Forces and/or the so-called Donetsk People's Republic."

The two others charged in the indictment brought in a federal court in Virginia were lower-ranking military personnel, identified by only their first names: Valerii and Nazar.

The Justice Department said Mkrtchyan and the others abducted the US national in April 2022 from his home in the village of Mylove in the Kherson Oblast region in southern Ukraine where he had been living with his wife.

Mock execution

The American, who was not identified, was not participating in the armed conflict between Russia and Ukraine, the department said in a statement.

"Acting on behalf of the Russian Armed Forces and the so-called Donetsk People's Republic, these four individuals allegedly violated the human rights of an American citizen," said Katrina Berger, executive associate director of Homeland Security Investigations.

"According to the charges, they unlawfully detained and tortured the American citizen, and even went so far as to carry out a mock execution," Berger said.

The American was held for least 10 days, repeatedly interrogated, threatened with sexual assault and tortured.

"Mkrtchyan, Valerii, Nazar, and others allegedly threw the victim face down to the ground while he was naked, tied his hands behind his back, pointed a gun at his head, and severely beat him," the Justice Department said.

At one point, Budnik allegedly threatened to kill the victim and asked for his last words.

"Shortly thereafter, Nazar and others allegedly conducted a mock execution," the Justice Department said. "They allegedly forced the victim to the ground, put a gun to the back of his head, then moved the gun slightly and shot a bullet just past the victim's head."

The four are charged with three war crimes -– unlawful confinement, torture, and inhuman treatment -– and one count of conspiracy to commit war crimes.

If taken into custody and convicted they face a maximum sentence of life in prison.

Garland told reporters more indictments could be expected under the war crimes statute, which gives the Justice Department jurisdiction to prosecute war crimes committed against US citizens abroad.

During the course of Ukraine's war, which started last year on February 24, Putin has often warned the West by saying that Russia would retaliate if anyone tried to launch a nuclear attack against it.

The tensions escalated after Putin deployed tactical nuclear missiles in Belarus and shifted Russia's stance on two major arms treaties. Moscow has insisted that it is not recklessly "brandishing" atomic weapons or changing its doctrine on their use.

This tour also came ahead of a re-election campaign as Putin is expected this month to confirm that he will run for another six-year term in March.

He was also seen selecting from among wishes that children had pinned to a Christmas tree in the hope he could make them come true.
