<p>Gita Gopinath, a senior International Monetary Fund (IMF) official warned during a speech in Colombia on Monday (Dec 11), that the world economy is on the brink of a second cold war, which could "annihilate" progress made since the collapse of the Soviet Union.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The IMF's first deputy managing director also said that the fragmentation in the global economy into power blocs, such as China the United States and Russia, could impact global output and wipe out trillions of dollars.&nbsp;</p>

<p>She said that the clear shifts in underlying bilateral trade because of all these factors could result in a "new Cold War".&nbsp;</p>

New York: Part of residential building in the Bronx collapses, officials search for possible victims

<p>China's President Xi Jinping starts a two-day visit to Vietnam on Tuesday, three months after U.S. President Joe Biden travelled to Hanoi as the two great powers vie for influence in the Southeast Asian nation.</p>

<p>The trip, Xi's first in six years, has been months in planning and was even briefly considered to take place days before Biden's visit, according to officials.</p>

<p>It is aimed at boosting relations between the two Communist-ruled countries which have very close economic ties but are at odds over boundaries in the South China Sea and have a millennia-long history of frequent conflict.</p>

<p>The visit has been delayed also because of prolonged discussions over how to phrase the countries' enhanced bilateral relations, which Beijing wants to be framed as "common destiny," a reference that Hanoi has resisted but is expected to have eventually accepted, according to officials and diplomats.</p>

<p>Beyond the symbolism of elevating ties to a notch that Beijing may see as being above the U.S.-Vietnam relationship, the upgraded status comes with the signature of "dozens of cooperation documents," according to China's ambassador to Vietnam Xiong Bo, as reported by Vietnamese state newspaper Tuoi Tre before the visit.</p>

<p>Among the expected deals are Chinese investments to upgrade rail links between the two neighbours, which would include grants, although the volume of aid is not clear and neither is the amount and terms of possible loans.</p>

<p>Both countries have expressed interest in boosting transport connections. Vietnam is willing to export more to China, especially farm products, and Beijing wants to integrate northern Vietnam further into its southern supply chain networks.</p>

<p>Many Chinese companies have moved part of their operations to Vietnam at a faster pace this year than before the pandemic to be closer to Western clients in Vietnam, lower risks from U.S.-China trade tensions and reduce exposure to China's weakened economy.</p>

<p>Strengthened rail connections would facilitate import of components from China for assembling in Vietnam, effectively expanding China's new silk road, which Beijing calls the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).</p>

<p>One in five players at this year's Women's World Cup were targeted by online abuse, according to a study released Monday by FIFA and the FIFPRO global players body.</p>

<p>The findings emerged from analysis of 5.1million posts and comments relating to 697 players and coaches taking part in the tournament in Australia and New Zealand.</p>

<p>Football's world governing body FIFA said in a statement 152 players received targeted "discriminatory, abusive or threatening messaging."</p>

<p>Nearly 50% of the verified online abuse was homophobic, sexual or sexist in nature.</p>

<p>The analysis also found players at the Women's World Cup were 29% more likely to receive abuse compared to male players at last year's World Cup in Qatar.</p>

<p>The findings came from analysis of data produced by FIFA's Social Media Protection Service (SMPS), which screened millions of posts for abusive content using artificial intelligence software, &nbsp;</p>

<p>Players were given the option of opting into the SMPS, and under the system, abusive messages -- totalling 116,820 -- were hidden from intended recipients.</p>

<p>The SMPS data showed that the United States women's team -- who have routinely been targeted for online abuse over the years -- were subjected to most abuse during the tournament.</p>

<p>FIFA said two players -- one from the United States, and one from Argentina, whose identities were not revealed -- were targeted above all.</p>

<p>Colombian player Leicy Santos was quoted in the report saying the abuse was harmful to mental health.</p>

<p>"If there is one thing that footballers suffer from the most, apart from losing, it is all the abusive comments – the taunts, the insults," Santos said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Beyond what we do as professional footballers, we are people. Some players are able to put up with the outrageous abuse we receive online, but other players aren't. It is a very sensitive issue when it comes to mental health."</p>

<p>FIFA President Gianni Infantino meanwhile vowed no let up in the battle to tackle player abuse.</p>

<p>"There can be no place on social media for those who abuse or threaten anyone, be that in FIFA tournaments or elsewhere," Infantino said in a statement.</p>

<p>Infantino said that since the SMPS system was first introduced last year, players, teams and officials had been shielded from more than 400,000 abusive comments.</p>

<p>"Discrimination has no place in football and no place in society," Infantino added.</p>

The findings emerged from analysis of 5.1million posts and comments relating to 697 players and coaches taking part in the tournament in Australia and New Zealand. Football's world governing body FIFA said in a statement 152 players received targeted "discriminatory, abusive or threatening messaging." Nearly 50% of the verified online abuse was homophobic, sexual or sexist in nature. The analysis also found players at the Women's World Cup were 29% more likely to receive abuse compared to male players at last year's World Cup in Qatar. The findings came from analysis of data produced by FIFA's Social Media Protection Service (SMPS), which screened millions of posts for abusive content using artificial intelligence software, Players were given the option of opting into the SMPS, and under the system, abusive messages -- totalling 116,820 -- were hidden from intended recipients. The SMPS data showed that the United States women's team -- who have routinely been targeted for online abuse over the years -- were subjected to most abuse during the tournament. FIFA said two players -- one from the United States, and one from Argentina, whose identities were not revealed -- were targeted above all. Colombian player Leicy Santos was quoted in the report saying the abuse was harmful to mental health. "If there is one thing that footballers suffer from the most, apart from losing, it is all the abusive comments – the taunts, the insults," Santos said. "Beyond what we do as professional footballers, we are people. Some players are able to put up with the outrageous abuse we receive online, but other players aren't. It is a very sensitive issue when it comes to mental health." FIFA President Gianni Infantino meanwhile vowed no let up in the battle to tackle player abuse. "There can be no place on social media for those who abuse or threaten anyone, be that in FIFA tournaments or elsewhere," Infantino said in a statement. Infantino said that since the SMPS system was first introduced last year, players, teams and officials had been shielded from more than 400,000 abusive comments. "Discrimination has no place in football and no place in society," Infantino added.
