Hamas brutality can't justify collective punishment of Palestinians: Guterres

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said on Friday that Hamas brutality could never justify "collective punishment" of Palestinians as Israel intensifies the war against Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

"Some 130 hostages are still held captive. I call for their immediate and unconditional release, as well as their humane treatment and visits from the International Committee of the Red Cross until they are freed," Guterres said at an emergency meeting of the organisation's Security Council.

"At the same time, the brutality perpetrated by Hamas can never justify the collective punishment of the Palestinian people," he added.

The health ministry in the Hamas-run Gaza Strip said Friday the death toll in the Israel-Hamas war has risen to at least 17,487 in the Palestinian territory.

Hamas also called on Friday for the United Nations Security Council to end the "brutal war" in the Gaza Strip.

Not Just a Song, but a War Cry: Know the History Behind Viral ANIMAL Song 'Arjan Vailly'

The song 'Arjan Vailly' from the latest Bollywood movie 'ANIMAL' has gone viral. But not everyone knows about the history related to it.

The song is based on a popular folk tune - Dhadi-Vaar music, created by Guru Gobind Singh when he was fighting the Mughals.

Kuldeep Manak originally sang the song. It is based on Arjan Singh Nalva, who is also known as Arjan Vailly.

Nalva was the son of Hari Singh Nalwa, who was the Commander-in-chief of the Sikh Khalsa Fauj in the 18th century, which was the army of the Sikh Empire.

Arjan Singh Nalva hailed from Kaunke village near Jagroan, which is near present-day Ludhiana, Punjab.

Arjan Singh and his brother Jawahir Singh Nalwa bravely fought for the Sikh Empire against the Mughals. The fight was also against the expansion of British rule in India.

Bodhi Day Celebration: The day when Siddhartha Gautama attained enlightenment

Bodhi Day or Buddha's Enlightenment Day is celebrated by Buddhists around the world

Southeast Asian and Tibetan Buddhists celebrate Buddha's enlightenment in May and June respectively.

Generally, the holiday falls between the winter solstice and the lunar new year.

The day commemorates Siddhartha Gautama attaining enlightenment some 2,600 years ago, and becoming the Buddha.

Siddhartha Gautama achieved enlightenment after years of spiritual seeking and meditation, including gaining insights into the ultimate nature of existence.

Buddhism is regarded as the world's fourth-largest religion after Christianity, Islam and Hinduism.

Not every Buddhist observes Bodhi Day. It is especially common in East Asian Buddhist Mahayana traditions such as those found in Japan, Korea, and Vietnam.

Green or Yellow, What Colour Is a Tennis Ball?

I always thought it was green, but then I came across a poll of nearly 30,000 participants. The poll was old, but it sure was intriguing.

In that poll done on social media, 52 per cent said a tennis ball is green, but a large percentage, 42 per cent, said it's yellow, and 6 per cent went with "other".

Wikipedia says tennis balls are fluorescent yellow at major sporting events, but in recreational play can be virtually any colour.

The official site of the International Tennis Federation (ITF) states that historically, balls were either black or white in colour, depending on the background colour of the courts.

But in 1972 the ITF introduced yellow tennis balls into the rules of tennis, as research had shown these balls to be more visible to television viewers. Hence, the ball is yellow. But they don't look so.

A fan once asked tennis legend Roger Federer what colour tennis balls are. "They're yellow, right?" Federer said.

We should believe what the legend says. But even that can't put an end to this fierce debate. So what do you think? What's the colour of tennis balls?

A Texas judge on Thursday (Dec 7) allowed a woman to have an abortion, a decision that challenged the US state's strict laws prohibiting the procedure. The woman, from Dallas-Fort Worth, had a potentially life-threatening pregnancy.

Judge Maya Guerra Gamble allowed 20-weeks-pregnant Kate Cox to have an abortion under a provision of the Texas law which allows the procedure in cases where a woman's health is at risk.

The woman's lawyers have said that the decision is the first such case since the US Supreme Court last year allowed states to ban abortion, overturning Roe v. Wade, which gave a constitutional right to the procedure.

Reports have said that last week, Cox learned that her fetus has full trisomy 18, which is a genetic condition that means her pregnancy may not last until birth. Even if it does, her baby would live at most a few days. She has two children.

Multiple serious conditions, including a twisted spine and irregular skull and heart development, were revealed in the ultrasounds.

The 31-year-old sued the state to have an abortion for a pregnancy that she and her physicians claim endangers not only her life but also her future fertility.

During the hearing, Cox's attorney Molly Duane mentioned that her "life and future fertility are at great risk, and according to her doctor, the medical care that she needs is an abortion".

Duane added that within the last two days, Cox had to visit an emergency room for a fourth time "for pregnancy symptoms including severe cramps leaking fluid and elevated vital signs".

Duane said: "Many of Miss Cox's health risks during this pregnancy will put her life in danger if left untreated, and carrying this pregnancy to term will significantly increase the risks to her future fertility, meaning that she and her husband may not be able to have more children in the future."

The judge granted the requested order, saying that "the idea that Miss Cox wants desperately to be a parent, and this law might actually cause her to lose that ability is shocking and would be a genuine miscarriage of justice".

During the hearing, Johnathan Stone, the attorney representing the state of Texas said that Cox and her husband did not mention that they would suffer "immediate and irreparable injury" without an abortion.

A mass shooting incident took place on Wednesday (Dec 6) when a gunman opened fire at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, killing three people and wounding a fourth, who was listed in stable condition.

The suspect was shot dead by police.

The gunman has been identified as a career college professor who had applied for a job at the school, but he was rejected, an official with direct knowledge of the investigation told The Associated Press.

The suspect previously worked at East Carolina University in North Carolina, the official said, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they weren’t authorised to release the information publicly.

Previously, police had declined to publicly identify the assailant. The authorities have not even mentioned the gender of the suspect.

Sheriff Kevin McMahill of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department said that several other people suffered panic attacks during the pandemonium.

He noted that a number of officers were also treated for minor injuries they received when they were searching the campus, known by its initials UNLV, for any additional victims or suspects.

Vincent Perez, who is a professor at the school, told MSNBC by phone that he had heard a lot of gunfire before taking cover on campus.

He said, "I would say just seven, eight shots, one after another, loud and very loud. As soon as we heard that, we ran back inside and we realised this was a real shooting, and there's an active shooter on campus."

UNLV police chief Adam Garcia told reporters that the law enforcement "immediately engaged the suspect in a shootout" after receiving a call reporting gunfire on campus at about 11:45 am (1945 GMT). He said the suspect was fatally shot by campus police.

"If it hadn't been for the heroic actions of one of those police officers who responded, there could have been countless additional lives taken," the sheriff added.

Mexico-based startup on Thursday (Dec 7) was accused of selling a health supplement made from endangered totoaba fish to several countries including the United States and China, The Associated Press reported citing environmental watchdogs.

The advocates raised concerns that the company, named The Blue Formula, could be selling fish that is illegally caught in the wild.

The company calls the product "nature's best kept secret" and comes in a small sachet of powder. It contains collagen taken from the fish and is meant to be consumed by mixing it into a drink.

The report mentioned that the export sale of totoaba fish is illegal under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora. Both, Mexico and the US, are signatories of this convention.

It is only allowed if the fish are bred in captivity with a particular permit. The commercial import is also illegal under US trade law because it is listed as a protected species.

The company hasn't said anything yet, but it claims on its website that it is "100%" sustainable as it sources fish from Cygnus Ocean.

Notably, the Cygnus Ocean is a farm which has a permit to breed totoaba. The company also claims that it is using a portion of its profits to release some farmed fish back into the wild.

Advocates like Alejandro Olivera, the Center for Biological Diversity's Mexico representative was quoted as saying, "there is no good enforcement of the traceability of totoaba in Mexico. So it could be easily used to launder wild totoaba".

An eight-week-old sea otter pup was found alone in October in dire conditions in the remote town of Seldovia, Alaska. The Pup EL2306 was malnourished and was brought to the Alaska SeaLife Center in Seward.

Now, he is in the nursery at Chicago's Shedd Aquarium, which is one of only a few facilities in the United States with the resources to care for rescued otters. It arrived in Chicago at the end of November.

Alaska SeaLife Center contacted the aquarium and the aquarium's otter team travelled cross-country with the otter.

As quoted by the news agency, Lana Gonzalez, a manager of penguins and otters at Shedd, said: "Caring for a little otter pup is just like caring for an infant," including round-the-clock feeding.

Gonzalez added, "He also needs to get groomed. Sea otters have a very dense coat — there's anywhere from 700,000 to a million hairs per square inch, and that's what they use to keep themselves warm. They don't have a thick layer of blubber or fat like other marine mammals do, so taking care of that coat is very important."

Otter babies learn lessons from their mothers, especially about grooming. Since Pup EL2306 was found alone, the aquarium team helped it by acting in the place of its mother. The team encourages the pup's healthy development.

Here's what researchers think As quoted by the news agency, Lana Gonzalez, a manager of penguins and otters at Shedd, said: "Caring for a little otter pup is just like caring for an infant," including round-the-clock feeding. Gonzalez added, "He also needs to get groomed. Sea otters have a very dense coat — there's anywhere from 700,000 to a million hairs per square inch, and that's what they use to keep themselves warm. They don't have a thick layer of blubber or fat like other marine mammals do, so taking care of that coat is very important." Otter babies learn lessons from their mothers, especially about grooming. Since Pup EL2306 was found alone, the aquarium team helped it by acting in the place of its mother. The team encourages the pup's healthy development. The latest research by the University of Bristol suggests that an HIV drug could stop many coronavirus diseases, including the SARS-CoV-2 variants. The study mentioned that the process could deliver results when given to infected cells at the right concentration.

The findings, published in the study Antiviral Research on December 5, stated that the drug has the potential to expand the existing arsenal of medications to combat current and future coronavirus epidemics.

The research team has previously shown that a booster drug (cobicistat) could have antiviral properties against a SARS-CoV-2 variant circulating in Europe in early 2020. The drug is normally used to reinforce the effect of anti-HIV drugs.

The researchers have studied whether or not the anti-SARS-CoV-2 properties of cobicistat were maintained against the key variants of concern (VOCs) of SARS-CoV-2 and other coronaviruses, including Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV).

MERS-CoV is spread over the Middle East, Africa, and South Asia, with a fatality rate of over 30 per cent with no vaccine or specialised treatments now available.

The researchers also compared cobicistat's effects to those of ritonavir, which is a structurally related chemical that is also one of the components of Paxlovid.

Notably, Paxlovid is the current gold standard for antiviral treatment of SARS-CoV-2.

To carry out the research, the team used automated image analysis for a screening and parallel comparison of the anti-coronavirus effects of cobicistat and ritonavir.

They found that cobicistat and ritonavir both act against all eight VOCs of SARS-CoV-2 that were tested against other human coronaviruses. The study noted that cobicistat is more powerful than ritonavir.

"Both drugs displayed anti-coronavirus activity in vitro at dosages that are well tolerated, but higher than those currently used for booster activity of anti-HIV drugs and in Paxlovid," the study noted.

Dr Iart Luca Shytaj, Lecturer in the School of Cellular and Molecular Medicine and one of the paper's corresponding authors, said: "Our results indicate that cobicistat, at dosages above its typical clinical use as a booster, could become an effective antiviral drug both on its own and in combination with other antivirals and lead to more potent treatments than current available options."

"If our findings are confirmed in animal and clinical studies, our results could strengthen the arsenal of antiviral drugs in the fight against current and future outbreaks of coronaviruses and reduce their impact on public health globally," Shytaj added.

The world's deepest and largest underground laboratory became operational in China, state news agency Xinhua reported on Thursday (Dec 7). The report said that the 2,400-metre-deep physics laboratory in located in southwest China's Sichuan Province.

The state agency's report stated that the Deep Underground and Ultra-low Radiation Background Facility for Frontier Physics Experiments (DURF) is located beneath Jinping Mountain in Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture.

The DURF has a total room capacity of 330,000 cubic metres.

The report mentioned the scientists think that the lab provides a major boost to the global search for dark matter, which is a hypothetical form of matter that appears not to interact with light or the electromagnetic field.

It is expected that the lab will open up new frontiers in deep-earth experiments as the extreme depth will help the scientists by blocking most cosmic rays that mess with the observation.

The underground laboratory has been launched after three years of extensive upgrades and expansion as it is the second phase of China Jinping Underground Laboratory, Xinhua further reported.

The facility started construction in December 2020 and was jointly built by Tsinghua University and Yalong River Hydropower Development Company, Ltd.

The facility, which is offering special testing conditions, is not available to scientists elsewhere.

As quoted, Yue Qian, a professor at Tsinghua University, said that the location helps DURF to be exposed to a very small amount of cosmic rays - one hundred-millionth of that on the Earth's surface.

The facility boasts advantages including ultra-low cosmic ray flux, extremely low environmental radiation, extremely low radon concentration, and ultra-clean space.

Notably, the first phase of the China Jinping Underground Laboratory was completed and put into use at the end of 2010, with a room capacity of about 4,000 cubic meters.

Several reports have stated that the facility made several scientific achievements, which have helped China's dark matter direct detection experiments.

Hundreds of North Koreans apparently "disappeared" after they were repatriated from China and sent back to the hermit kingdom, where they were expected to face imprisonment, a rights group said Thursday (Dec 7).

The Seoul-based human rights group, Transitional Justice Working Group (TJWG), stated that they were forcibly deported by China in October under the cover of darkness in the "largest mass repatriation of its kind in years".

The report suggests that they could have faced abuses at the hands of North Korean authorities. The report hasn't revealed any identity of the defectors, but it mentioned that most of them are women.

The report by the Transitional Justice Working Group (TJWG) noted that no communication has been established with around 600 defectors.

The report came about two months after South Korea lodged a protest with China over the suspected repatriation of a large number of North Koreans. They were reportedly trying to flee to South Korea.

TJWG claims that on October 9, the defectors were transported in guarded buses and vans from Chinese detention centres.
